Bangladesh left-arm spinner, Abdur Razzak, has said that “gaining experience” during the Indian Premier League was “more important than the money” he earned with the Bangalore Royal Challengers.Bought by the franchise for $50,000, Razzak was Bangladesh’s sole representative at the IPL but he got to play only one match, against Rajasthan Royals, and conceded 29 runs off two overs without taking a wicket. Razzak, however, said that he learned a lot by spending time with experienced international players.”I have always known players like [Rahul] David, [Anil] Kumble and [Jacques] Kallis as opponents but having worked with them, I saw their attitude towards cricket and how mentally tough they are,” Razzak told the . “Now I know how they play and how they approach cricket. Although there was no special rapport, all my team-mates were simply fantastic towards me and I loved every moment of it although I didn’t get to play much.”Anil was very helpful when I asked him about bowling in Test matches. He told me that given my bowling approach, it is very important to use variations within my line and length. Actually, captains would want a breakthrough from me so without using variations, wickets are hard to come by. Coach Venkatesh Prasad was also a great help.”His stint with Bangalore, however, made Razzak miss the Premier Cricket Super League for Mohammedan Sporting Club. “I missed the Dhaka league and I also didn’t have too much to do in India so it was quite boring at times.”Razzak will begin practice at the SBNS Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday and will play two practice games on June 3 and 5 ahead of the tri-series involving Bangladesh, India and Paksitan.

Wolves transfer update on Vitinha

Many Wolves fans have been left to fume as a transfer update emerged involving Vitinha.

As per A Bola, the Midlands club have ‘definitely moved away’ from signing the attacking midfield player on a permanent deal after his loan spell at Molineux in the 2020/21 season, meaning that he will be returning to FC Porto.

This has come as a big blow to several WWFC supporters, who have previously called for him to be signed permanently after impressing them with some of his displays.

Vitinha had the highest pass success percentage (90.3%) out of any of his teammates to have played 10 or more games in the Premier League last term (Whoscored), showing how instrumental he was for his team in starting attacks.

However, it looks as if he will not be playing in an Old Gold shirt come next campaign.

These Wanderers fumed as the transfer update was shared on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that it was ‘insane’:

Countries jockey to host 2007 World Cup semis, final

The semi-finals and final of the 2007 World Cup will be staged in countriesunder the aegis of the West Indies Cricket Board

Derrick Nicholas28-Nov-2002The semi-finals and final of the 2007 World Cup will be staged in countriesunder the aegis of the West Indies Cricket Board.Chris Dehring, the managing director of Windies World Cup 2007 Inc., hasrevealed the WICB has made this policy a decision and it has beenincorporated into the policies and guidelines of the 2007 World Cup MasterPlan.”This means that those three important matches, as far as the WICB areconcerned, must be played in three of the 14 countries who are an officialpart of West Indies cricket,” Dehring told the monthly luncheon of theBarbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday.Dehring, however, stressed the 2007 World Cup is not the West Indies’ to dowhatever the WICB wants and to any standards they choose.”Windies World Cup 2007 has to be seen and appreciated as a global eventthat the West Indies has been given the privilege of hosting,” he said.”There have been various expressions of concern when mention is made of theUnited States, Cayman Islands, or The Bahamas as potential venues for thehosting of matches in 2007.”But understanding that this event belongs to the International CricketCouncil and, given their vision to spread the gospel of the glorious game, then the possibility that the ICC will want to have matches played in theseterritories is very logical.”Dehring outlined that a fundamental pillar of the WICB’s Master Plan for the2007 World Cup is to maintain a distinctive element of competition betweenthe potential venues in the Caribbean.”The definition of ‘venue’ in this case is the country or city and it isimportant to understand that all the facilities of the ‘venue’ will need tobe assessed,” he remarked.”In this regard also, there will be no such thing as a traditional venue. The so-called traditional venues – Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago andGuyana – will all have to submit a competitive bid like everybody else andwill receive no preferential treatment.””Countries who have invested in new facilities like Grenada, St. Lucia, St.Vincent & the Grenadines, and Antigua & Barbuda insisted on an assurancethat when it comes to the 2007 World Cup, they will be treated on an equalbasis with the so-called traditional venues.”Dehring indicated that professional venue development master planners willbe contracted as part of a Venue Assessment team to assist the WICB withassessing “venues” for the allocation of matches.”In this regard, it won’t matter to professional venue master planners thespecial mystique attached to (grounds) because these are professionals whohave performed similar assessments in football World Cups and in OlympicGames,” he said.”They will assess ‘venues’ and stadiums objectively for the quality andquantity of physical facility which they are, and on the basis that a WorldCup is being staged in the Caribbean and that suitable venues and stadiumswill be required to stage a world class event.”The 2007 World Cup in the West Indies is scheduled for April to May thatyear.

World Cup ticket sales in turn about

For some disgruntled cricket lovers it may have come a day too late, but overnight, the World Cup organising committee turned things around to have almost a problem free day of ticket sales

Keith Lane16-Jul-2002For some disgruntled cricket lovers it may have come a day too late, but overnight, the World Cup organising committee turned things around to have almost a problem free day of ticket sales. Working late into the night technologies were improved and all venues reported excellent sales. The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Newlands in Cape Town and Kingsmead in Durban were today completely sold out while stadium grandstand seats are only available at Centurion, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein. For the rest some open stands and grass embankment packages are still available.’Follow the Team’ packages for the first round for South Africa, Zimbabwe, Australia, West Indies, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and England have all been snapped up. Super Six packages will go on sale after completion of the first round.Compared to the 98 000 tickets sold on Monday, 30 500 were sold today leaving a balance of 93,500. Total ticket takings for the two days now stands at R17 million. If these sales are anything to go by then stadiums are going to be packed to capacity during February and March next year and financially the cash strapped unions are going to be breathing a lot easier and cricket in South Africa can look to an bright future. In a statement released by the organising committee quoted Dr Ali Bacher, executive director, as saying: "We are pleased with the way the sale of ticket packages went today but we acknowledge that the system is slow because of the heavy traffic on both the call centre and website. The system stood up well today but we are sympathetic with the many cricket fans who have struggled to access the sales channels. Sales on both the call center and website proceeded smoothly."All sale outlets will be open to the public from 07:00 till 19:00 on Wednesday 17 July.

Bajans whip Canadians after nudge

KINGSTON – Barbados needed a loud wake-up call before completing the formalities of beating opponents who might struggle to beat the newly-crowned Cable & Wireless Under-15 winners

23-Aug-2002KINGSTON – Barbados needed a loud wake-up call before completing the formalities of beating opponents who might struggle to beat the newly-crowned Cable & Wireless Under-15 winners.Midway into the 12th over of their opening regional Under-19 limited-overs match against lightweights Canada, team coach Roddy Estwick got up from his seat on the balcony of the Melbourne Club ground, took a few steps forward and made his feelings known to his seemingly sleeping men."If we’re not serious, we can give the match to Canada and go home," Estwick bellowed to his players, who only two days earlier, were crowned the three-day champions of the tournament."After winning the three-day competition, you obviously become a little complacent. You’re playing a team of Canada’s ability and you think that you turn up and you are going to win," Estwick told NATIONSPORT after the match."They needed a wake-up call, a nice reminder. I had to do it again at lunch time – to let them know we had to focus on what we were doing and not to become complacent and not to under-estimate the opposition."Once Estwick got his message across, Barbados wasted no time in rolling over Canada for an inadequate 128 from 49.3 overs and went on to win by seven wickets to set up a semifinal clash against the Windward Islands today at the Kensington Club ground.Barbados lost Martin Nurse to a catch on the deep square-leg boundary in the first over, but had little difficulties in attaining a revised target of 124 in 45 overs. The adjusted target, brought about after rain delayed the resumption after lunch by 47 minutes, was achieved for the loss of three wickets with 10.2 overs intact.Kirk Edwards led the response with a polished unbeaten 58 after left-arm fast bowler Umar Bhatti, an Asish Nehra lookalike, added the wickets of Joel Leocock and Kirk Gibson in a commendable new-ball spell.Edwards, who reached his half-century off 87 balls, stroked six fours, mainly exquisite drives through the off-side and accompanied the solid Renaldo Parris (28 not out) in an unbroken fourth wicket partnership of 86 after they linked up at 38 for three.Estwick’s one concern was the high number of extras that included 14 wides and 11 no balls and the coach was also perplexed by the infamous Duckworth/Lewis calculation although it did not have a significant affect on the proceedings.Canada never appeared to be serious about what they were supposed to do.They spent the previous ten days with no cricket in the middle and during that period they would have been on sight-seeing trips and had plenty of other fun which appeared to be extended to their approach yesterday. If they claimed to have learnt anything during their three-day matches against Jamaica, Guyana and Windward Islands, it was hardly evident.Jason Sandher, a big No. 4, showed he was capable of handling himself by compiling a solid 50 off 98 balls and shared in two half-century stands with batsmen who least showed a tenacity to hang around. Most of the others, however, seemed like mere novices competing in a league that is several notches above their abilities.

Rangers eyeing Ivan Lepinjica

A major update has emerged in Rangers’ pursuit of a Croatian midfielder, and it could lead to Ross Wilson landing a cracking deal for the club.

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, Rangers are working hard on a deal to sign defensive midfielder Ivan Lepinjica from Croatian side Rijeka this summer. The report claims that the Gers are interested in signing the 21-year-old on an initial loan, with an option to make it permanent at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Premier League side Tottenham were looking into a move for Lepinjica before pulling out of the race due to concerns over his injury problems at Rijeka.

Last year, HITC claimed that Croatian football expert Ivan Zezelj likened the youngster to Manchester United and France midfielder Paul Pogba in his style of play. Zezelj also spoke about how Lepinjica is mature for his age as he told HITC: “Lepinjica is a natural number six; young and very talented. He can play as a number eight as well, in my opinion.

“He’s very mature for his age. Last season, he was promoted to the senior squad and instantly played like an experienced pro.”

Fans would love it

Rangers fans would surely love it if the club could seal a deal for Lepinjica. The 21-year-old has already played 70 competitive games for Rijeka’s first team and has been capped at various youth levels by Croatia, suggesting that he has stood out among his peers to make it through to Rijeka’s team ahead of others in the youth ranks.

Tottenham’s interest in his services is also a good sign for Rangers, as it shows that Lepinjica was performing at a level where Premier League sides took notice of his talent.

This shows that the Gers could be about to bring in a top-quality midfield player with plenty of promise. He could be someone who is able to develop over time and learn under the coaching of Steven Gerrard as he has many years ahead of him in the game at 21.

Rangers fans could enjoy watching him flourish over a number of years as they see his progress as a player and a person, with his potential being one of the reasons why the club must sanction a deal for Lepinjica.

The deal being an initial loan also makes it ideal for Rangers from a financial point of view. The £720,000-rated beast can be monitored during his loan spell with the club, allowing Wilson and Gerrard to run the rule over him before deciding whether or not they want to commit funds to keep him on a permanent basis.

This would mean that Rangers are not stuck with him if, for whatever reason, it does not work out for him in Scotland. It could be a great deal all round and Wilson should sanction it this summer.

England in charge as rain brings early finish at Old Trafford

On a day that finished early because of rain and bad light, England had made hay while the clouds rolled by earlier in the day to lay the foundations for another very healthy total after winning the toss

Ralph Dellor13-Jun-2002On a day that finished early because of rain and bad light, England had made hay while the clouds rolled by earlier in the day to lay the foundations for another very healthy total after winning the toss. Whether they can top five hundred as they have in their last two innings against Sri Lanka remains to be seen, but their overall dominance of the attack suggests that it is not out of the question. It was a good toss to win from the outset, with Nasser Hussain having no hesitation in batting first. The decision was made to look even better when Eric Upashantha encountered the first set of problems on what was to become a progressively more difficult day that only improved when he bowled with a wet ball late in the day.Only a short distance to the west stands another Old Trafford where, in recent memory, the fans would often chant the name of Eric. However, Cantona could scarcely have suffered such a miserable day on the football field as Upashantha endured here. He bowled five no balls in his first spell of four overs and was taken off having conceded 24 from his four overs. Having said that, Muttiah Muralitharan fared little, if any, better. His first spell was of three overs that cost 22 runs.Marcus Trescothick and Michael Vaughan were feasting on a glut of half volleys and long hops. Vaughan in particular was striking the ball cleanly but yet another innings full of immense promise was cut short when he was deceived by a slower ball from Dilhara Fernando who was the pick of the Sri Lankan attack with his pace and bounce. Vaughan simply chipped his intended push through the covers to Chaminda Vaas at mid-off.Trescothick and Mark Butcher proceeded to share a partnership that was to realise 126 runs in 35 overs. Both were batting with style and Butcher launched into the return of Upashantha by taking three more boundaries off his next one-over spell. The only alarms they experienced came when Trescothick was dropped twice in the space of two balls from Fernando. He failed to get on top of a cut to send a stinging chance towards Hashan Tillakeratne at backward point that the fielder parried but could not catch, even at the second attempt as it fell behind him. Next ball, Trescothick top-edged a hook that went in a gentle arc toward backward square. Fernando had to abort his premature celebrations when the luckless Upashantha spilled the sort of chance that most club cricketers would snaffle. There is no truth in the rumour that he put his head in his hands – and dropped that as well.Trescothick added 17 to his total after those escapes before he pushed forward to Muralitharan and edged to Mahela Jayawardene at slip very low down. He had gathered 14 boundaries in his 152-ball innings and undoubtedly had his eyes set on a century.Hussain came in and immediately tried to impose himself on the bowling. He has been in princely form of late, but whether it was prudent to set off at such a tempo was a matter for him to determine. Having charged Muralitharan, making more use of his pad than bat, he then tucked in to the last over before tea from Fernando to help himself to three fours and a two. Fernando had been warned for running onto the pitch earlier, and while concentrating on going wide, dropped the ball horribly short. It was the bowler who retained the initiative, though, when he drew Hussain into an expansive drive after tea, only for the England captain to find that it was another well-disguised slower ball that he reached outside off-stump to play with his weight back on one knee and head in the air. That position would have allowed him to follow the trajectory of the ball to mid-off where Muralitharan took the catch. The first of two all-Surrey partnerships saw Graham Thorpe join Butcher. They were together when the players left the field during the start of the first rain break, but not for long when play resumed. It was still gloomy and the rain must have eased only marginally, but in these difficult conditions Upashantha suddenly found the control he had been so elusive earlier. Thorpe made contact with a feint inside edge to the ‘keeper and the bowler’s relief and joy was totally understandable. He could have had another wicket when the new batsman, Alec Stewart, slashed at a short ball outside the off stump to see a flying effort from Jayawardene at backward point go down, and Stewart stayed with Butcher until the rain returned again to send the players from the field for the last time. Equalling the England appearance record in this match, Stewart will want to make an impression on a favourite ground, while Butcher, who just missed out on a century at Edgbaston, will not want to do so here. There is no reason why he should not go on well past three figures.

Leeds’ Patrick Bamford suffers England snub

Leeds United star Patrick Bamford has suffered a major blow, with England manager Gareth Southgate omitting him from the provisional squad for Euro 2020.

What’s the story?

The striker has been an absolute sensation in the Premier League this season for the Whites, banging in 17 goals and providing another eight assists in the 38 games.

However, despite his form, Southgate has opted to leave him out from the expanded 33-man provisional squad that he named on Tuesday afternoon, instead choosing to go with the likes of Harry Kane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Marcus Rashford, Ollie Watkins and Mason Greenwood as his strikers.

Leeds fans will be fuming

Given just how impressively Bamford has performed at the Premier League level this season, it’s no surprise that many Leeds fans are already up in arms over the striker’s omission from the England squad.

Only Kane has outscored the Whites forward in the Premier League in terms of the players Southgate has chosen, while only the England captain, Rashford and Jack Grealish have provided more assists than him.

When leaving Bamford out of the last squad, Southgate himself admitted: “(Bamford was) very close. There’s a number of positions in this squad that have been really close calls and we felt we wanted an extra striker.

“We like his (Watkins) pressing, the speed and the runs in behind. He’s got some improvement to make in linking the game, but in his first season in the Premier League at a big club, he’s done exceptionally well. That’s been a really close call because all the things I’ve said about Ollie I could have said for Patrick as well. So he’s very unfortunate.”

Meanwhile, there have been numerous of calls for Southgate to have taken Bamford as one of his forward options.

The Mirror’s Neil Moxley wrote: “I’d take Patrick Bamford instead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Leeds man provides more assists and his star is on an upwards curve.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/leeds-united-marcelo-bielsa-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-elland-road-rodrigo-de-paul” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

Speaking recently to the Yorkshire Evening Post, former Leeds midfielder David Prutton said: “Get him in there. He’s got no tournament baggage and he’s a great team player who is a hard worker and selfless.

“He’s performed under pressure at a big club and always rises to the challenge of the questions against him. He’s an all round good egg.”

While Kalvin Phillips’ inclusion will surely please Leeds fans, the fact that Bamford isn’t in the squad despite outperforming almost every striker Southgate has chosen will understandably have the Elland Road faithful fuming.

Meanwhile, Leeds United are plotting a new move for this star…
