Liverpool: Sky Sports make Adeyemi claim

According to a report from Sky Sports Germany (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are still ‘in talks’ to sign Red Bull Salzburg sensation Karim Adeyemi.

The lowdown: Dortmund bound?

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the 20-year-old in the past but it had appeared a move to Borussia Dortmund was on the horizon for the upcoming summer window.

Already a regular for club and country, Adeyemi has amassed an incredible 45 domestic goals and 32 assists in his senior career to date, racking up 123 first-team appearances after a sensational career at youth level.

He has scored once in three caps for Germany, and Liverpool could be about to spoil Dortmund’s party if reports on the continent are to be believed…

The latest: Reds in talks, Klopp loves him

As per Sky Sports Germany, translated by SW, the Anfield club are believed to be ‘still in talks’ with representatives of the exciting youngster.

The report claims that despite Salzburg and Dortmund reaching an ‘agreement in principle’, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain remain interested in scuppering the deal, and Jurgen Klopp is personally a ‘big fan’ of the player.

Dortmund were expected to pay €35million (£29million) for the man who was described as an ‘ice cold’ finisher by national team boss Hansi Flick.

The verdict: Make it happen

We feel Adeyemi would be worth the additional hard work that has so often been avoided by a clean transfer strategy amongst the Reds recruitment team.

As Julian Ward prepares to cut his teeth in place of acclaimed sporting director Michael Edwards, pulling off this kind of coup would be the ideal way to endear yourself to the Anfield faithful – Ward already played a big role in the capture of immediate fan favourite Luis Diaz.

So far this seasonm the versatile Adeyemi has scored 20 times and provided five assists in 38 appearances across all competitions – including five direct goal contributions in the UEFA Champions League.

Those numbers alone are proof of a player ready to take the next step in a promising career, but it’s the youngster’s ability to play across the frontline that would truly make Adeyemi a superb addition to Klopp’s already blessed squad, potentially starring in the next generation of Liverpool forward’s after the current famous trio eventually move on.

Newcastle: Edwards drops transfer update

Newcastle United look set to bring three new signings to St James’ Park during what remains of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent report from Luke Edwards for The Telegraph, in which the journalist revealed that Newcastle are closing in on the signings of Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah, Brighton defender Dan Burn and Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Edwards added that the Magpies’ owners had suffered a number of setbacks in the winter transfer market, although PIF have worked tirelessly to ensure that Eddie Howe’s squad is stronger than it was at the start of January.

PIF finally mean business

All throughout the January transfer window, Newcastle have been linked with a quite frankly ridiculous number of players – ranging from Kylian Mbappe to Harry Winks – something which led to a great amount of confusion as to what transfer strategy the club have been working towards this month.

However, should the Magpies go on to land Nketiah, Burn and Guimaraes – as Edwards suggests they will – it would undoubtedly have been a hugely successful final week of the window for the Magpies and PIF, as all three players would appear to make exceptional additions to Howe’s current options at St James’ Park.

Indeed, despite having failed to cement a starting spot in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side, the 22-year-old Nketiah is undoubtedly a centre-forward who boasts a considerable amount of potential, something he has demonstrated in his five appearances in the Carabao Cup this season, bagging five goals.

Meanwhile, versatile left-back Burn will also add much-needed depth on the left-hand side of the Newcastle backline, with the 6 foot 7 defender having averaged a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.96 over his 13 Premier League appearances for Brighton in the current campaign.

Finally, the club’s marquee signing this January looks set to become Guimaraes, a defensive midfielder who has been in astonishing form over his 20 Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon this season. The £27m-rated Brazil international has registered three assists and created five big chances for his teammates, as well as making 1.1 interceptions, 2.5 tackles and 1.8 key passes and winning a whopping 7.9 duels per game.

These returns have seen the 24-year-old average a rather astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.30. If he replicates that form upon a prospective switch to Newcastle, he will undoubtedly provide the Magpies’ chances of avoiding the drop this season with a considerable boost.

It has taken a while to get deals over the line this month, but if Newcastle go on to seal all three of those players in the coming days, PIF will have certainly proven that they mean business in the transfer market – something which will delight the St James’ Park faithful.

By the time he got out, Chemplast had added 65 runs in 34 balls, which enabled them to finish with a formidable score.Group D

Tamil Nadu’s Sridharan Sriram and Umashankar Sushil combined in a 63-run partnership for the fifth wicket. At that juncture, MRF needed 81 runs with more than 23 overs remaining. However, Sushil fell, and Sriram later followed with the score on 125 after having made 46 off 67. A last-wicket stand of 23 raised MRF’s hopes but last man Prasanth Chandran was dismissed with 14 runs still required.
ScorecardIncome Tax hammered Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) by 171 runs in a Group D match in Bangalore.Defending a target of 293, Baroda’s Ajitesh Argal and Gujarat’s Rohit Dahiya ran through the ONGC batting, dismissing them for 121 in 30.4 overs. Amin to meet franchise heads on June 24

The BCCI has called the ten IPL franchises for a meeting on June 24 in Mumbai, ending a brief communication lull

Nagraj Gollapudi10-Jun-2010The BCCI has called the ten IPL franchises for a meeting on June 24 in Mumbai, ending a brief communication lull. The significance is that the franchises will finally get the opportunity to get acquainted with Chirayu Amin, the league’s interim chairman, after the BCCI suspended Lalit Modi on April 26.The letter, a copy of which is with Cricinfo, was sent on June 8 and addressed to “the owners of the franchises” by N Srinivasan, the board secretary. Without elaborating the agenda, the brief communiqué read:”BCCI President, Shri. Shashank Manohar and Interim Chairman IPL, Shri. Chirayu Amin desire to meet the owners of the IPL franchise to discuss matters pertaining to the IPL.” Also attending the meeting are Ratnakar Shetty, the board’s administrative officer and Sundar Raman, the IPL’s chief operating officer.Even as the BCCI top brass got immersed trying to sort the IPL mess after Modi’s suspension, the franchises, especially the original eight, were anxiously waiting to hear from the board about the way forward. At the moment, most franchises Cricinfo spoke to are keen to understand what Amin and co. have in mind regarding the player auction, how many players each team can retain and the total number of matches from IPL 4 after the addition of two more teams.”Most would expect a road map, what is going to happen here on,” a top official from one of the franchises, who did not want to be named, told Cricinfo. “We don’t even know what will happen.” But, according to him, invariably most franchises would read their demands from the same sheet.”Player auction, central revenues, the retention of players, the sponsorship avenues – these would top my list and I reckon most others would want to know the same,” the official said. Central revenues comprise the monies that come from the broadcasting revenues, the title sponsorship, and other avenues like the the MRF blimp. Till last year, each team received 10% of the central sponsorship, with 20% going to the IPL. “We are worried if that will change for the third season,” another franchise official said.Another important issue likely to be discussed is if the number of matches scheduled to be played from IPL 4 needs to be reviewed. A total of 94 matches were slotted originally, an excessive workload – critics have pointed out – which could endanger the players’ fitness and add to the stress. In fact, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, a member of the IPL governing council, voiced concerns about the relentless schedule and the IPL workload, after India were knocked out of the ICC World Twenty20 in the Super Eights for the second year in a row.Interestingly the matter is already being discussed by the board officials internally. According to a top BCCI official, the IPL governing council will study a proposal which recommends the teams being split in two groups, with a total of 68 matches. It is understood that the IPL governing council will meet in Mumbai on June 25, the day after meeting the franchises.

Sky reporter drops Spurs transfer hint

Taking to Twitter, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has dropped an exciting five-word transfer hint as he makes a claim on Tottenham Hotspur’s activity in January.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye moves…

As reported elsewhere, it appears manager Antonio Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici have their eyes on strengthening key areas of the squad this month.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Reliable football.london correspondent Alasdair Gold, for example, says the Lilywhites wish to bolster central midfield, the right-wing-back area, the left-side of central defence and further forward.

There have been no shortage of links to some big name players, either, with claims varying from lucrative pre-contract offers to big bids being made.

Thomas, dropping a transfer hint on Twitter, has now told Spurs fans to expect activity out of N17.

The Latest: Thomas drops transfer hint…

Sending a five-word message to Lilywhites supporters when asked for the latest updates out of their club, the Sky journalist stated that Paratici and Conte will definitely make moves this month.

Taking to social media, he explained: “Will do business, almost certainly.”

The Verdict: Exciting claim…

Over recent seasons, it’s safe to say the January transfer window hasn’t exactly been a busy one for Spurs – so news that they will indeed be active this month should come as music to the ears of Lilywhites supporters.

Conte needs backing in the transfer market if he is to make a success of his tenure in charge with managing director Paratici and chairman Daniel Levy tasked to do just that.

The latter man has apparently met with Tottenham owner Joe Lewis in the Bahamas to discuss transfer strategy in what could be a key factor to Conte’s plans this month.

Adding Thomas’ transfer hint on top of that news, it’s safe to to say this is shaping up to be the most interesting Lilywhites winter window in some time.

Liverpool fans call for Phillips to leave

A number of Liverpool supporters have called for Nathaniel Phillips to be sold by the club, following rumoured interest from Serie A giants Napoli.

The 24-year-old became something of a cult hero last season, filling the centre-back void left by injured trio Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

In the end, Phillips played a big part in Liverpool sealing an unlikely third-placed finish in the Premier League, starting 15 games in the top flight.

Minutes have been hard to come by this time around, though, with just three appearances to his name in all competitions, and he is now being linked with a move away from Anfield.

According to The Times [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Napoli have shown an interest in signing Phillips, and Liverpool would demand £15m for his signature.

Bielsa drops Leeds United transfer update

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has dropped a worrying transfer update ahead of the January window.

What’s the story?

The Whites find themselves in a difficult position in the Premier League heading into the busy Christmas period, with their mid-week drubbing at the hands of Manchester City placing a lot of scrutiny on the club’s growing injury list and potential transfer plans.

And now, Bielsa has delivered an update on where things currently stand, and it’s not great news for Leeds fans.

He said: “It’s a question that I’ve answered various times, I don’t have a different answer than what I’ve given up until now. Of course I’m losing authority in the position I defend because every game presents new difficulties. The question you ask me leaves me defenceless to defend my ideas.

“It’s also important to leave clear what I’ve said about this subject previously. The capacity for an institution to fortify their squad has a limit due to their budget. In that sense the president, the club have acted in a more than sufficient manner. But this is not the moment for me to explain anything.”

Fans will be worried

Having been at the hands of a 7-0 thrashing against City, and a clash against a resurgent Arsenal at the weekend, Leeds can ill afford any more big slip-ups in terms of results, and injuries too.

Bielsa has had desperate misfortune with missing the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Raphinha and Patrick Bamford for extended periods of time and it has placed a lot of question marks over his reluctance to strengthen his squad.

Phillips is now out for the best part of two months and the fact that they’ve not won a single game this term when he’s not featured suggests they need more bodies in the team.

The Argentine has been known to favour a tight-knit group that he can rely on, but what the injuries and illnesses have caused and exposed is a glaring lack of depth, especially in key areas.

His comments that new signings may not be on the table due to budget concerns should leave fans very worried, particularly with the prospect of a real relegation battle looming for the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has delivered a Leeds United transfer update…

No concerns over Pakistan's WC games in India – Lorgat

Haroon Lorgat, the ICC CEO, spoke exclusively to Cricinfo about Pakistan’s situation and the ICC taskforce working with the PCB to alleviate the board’s plight

Osman Samiuddin15-Apr-2010After the Lahore attacks last year, a feeling grew in Pakistan and the PCB that they have been isolated from world cricket, both geographically in terms of tournaments being taken away, and otherwise in ways such as their players missing out on the IPL. How does the ICC deal with something like this?First of all it is a very unfortunate feeling because it is devoid of any truth. In fact it is quite the reverse. There is a lot of sympathy, a lot of understanding, a lot of acknowledgement that we need to do something to make sure that we support Pakistan during this difficult phase brought on because of environmental factors and nothing to do with cricket. It is very unfortunate but untrue. It is very difficult for me as the ICC to try and portray anything different other than to say that it is not true.We have put a task team together, we’ve done everything possible, we’ve supported Pakistan through decisions we’ve made. In fact the task team has gone as far as to try and assist in accommodating international fixtures. One thing is very clear in my mind and I think of my own upbringing with South Africa, where there was real isolation and it’s absolutely the inverse here.Just on the IPL issue, Pakistan’s players missed out. The ICC says it is a domestic issue but isn’t that just deflection? Isn’t it a serious concern that the best players of Twenty20 in the world are not playing in the world’s most lucrative cricket league. Should the ICC not take an interest in that and can they really do anything about this? From a regulatory perspective no, but surely when we speak to our friends across all sectors we try to suggest to and influence them to be as transparent and as open-minded about all this, as possible. But in truth those owners decide on who their teams shall or shall not be and we can do no more.Did it disappoint you? There is an emotional response and all of us were disappointed that some of the better players – Pakistan after all had just won the World Twenty20 – had missed out. So there is an emotional disappointment. But if you think about it intellectually, some of the rationale behind it, you have to understand, some owners didn’t want to maybe go through the difficulty and then you can appreciate the reasoning behind it. Intellectually you can begin to understand why they didn’t want to take the risk.Relations between Pakistan and the ICC deteriorated last year after the World Cup hosting issue and there was the threat of a legal battle. How do things stand now?If there is a legal battle ensuing then of course relationships are somewhat different, you are a bit more guarded, a bit more careful. But we are all professional, we know how to handle these things, we worked through it, we managed it very well and here we are. We sorted the matter out. We’ve always said that perhaps Pakistan misunderstood the reasoning behind it, and it wasn’t an attempt to strip them of co-hosting, it was just of location. But I think all of that fell into place and began to make sense. I would say currently people have long got over the issue of taking the locations out of Pakistan. We’ve settled that in August last year, lots has passed since then and people have moved on.What work has the ICC task force done so far in terms of helping Pakistan? The task force was set up before the Lahore attacks and after the Champions Trophy 2008 decision. Pakistan accepted the invitation in January 2009 in Perth to work with the task force. Some of the positives you can see now, the benefits. In that task force there is a support to do something. England in particular has seen the opportunity to host Pakistan Tests there. It is a huge benefit to Pakistan. I’ve always said, I am very clear on one thing, Pakistan must play international cricket. If it cannot play on home soil, that is unfortunate but it should not stop playing international cricket. At best, let’s play on neutral venues until things become a bit different in the home environment and we can revisit that prospect of playing at home. There was talk of a series of world XI games being played against them in Abu Dhabi, Dubai but that hasn’t gone far? It’s going to be very difficult. These are all suggestions that are worked on. You know how packed the calendar is. In fact even Pakistan themselves – which is a good thing, an excellent thing – are so jam-packed. Nothing I suspect will happen this year, in terms of that suggestion but it is one of the possible options. How important is it, with India being such a financial giant, for Pakistan and India to improve ties and be able to play regularly? Is the ICC doing something about that? You explained the economics of how important it is. From the ICC perspective, it is important that all our members have harmonious relationships. They are all members and we want to ensure that every one of them is working on sound relations with the other. The World Cup is less than a year away now. Could there be problems with regards to Pakistan playing in India: the final for example is scheduled for Mumbai and a Pakistan side hasn’t played there for many years.I’m not concerned now because at the central organizing committee level we’ve been very clear in our minds that should Pakistan reach any of the venues they will play at those venues. That includes Mumbai so if they get to the final, they would be very welcome to playing at Wankhede Stadium. What do you see as the roadmap to cricket returning to Pakistan? 2011 was the earliest the ICC said initially, but realistically when do you see it returning? There is absolutely no timeline, and it would be irresponsible to suggest timelines and create expectations. We need to take it a day, a week, a month, a year at a time. It is something we must just monitor. This year Pakistan are sorted out in terms of international fixtures. When next year comes around, we must keep an open mind. As we read reports and get reports, we’ve got security networks in place and we keep monitoring and keep an eye on developments.Has the ICC looked at its own role as far as security is concerned, maybe at least by standardizing security consultants for all series around the world?Yes we have. We established a security task force that really got going after Lahore attacks headed by Lord Condon. That task force had put forward seven recommendations which the board has agreed. One of those is a standardization of required safety and security standards. Another recommendation which the PCB has implemented is for each full member to appoint a full-time security manager including at the ICC. That network of security managers will arrange standard protocol measures. Now those measures are being written so hopefully by June we could have something in place.

Wolves fans slam Pep Guardiola claim

Lots of Wolves fans were left fuming over a claim made by Pep Guardiola after Manchester City beat them 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

When asked after the match about the controversial penalty which was given to his team and scored by Raheem Sterling, the Spaniard claimed: “I didn’t see it.”

The penalty was given for an alleged handball by Joao Moutinho, when it appeared to hit his armpit, while the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) claimed that there was not any clear evidence to change the decision from VAR after multiple angles, which indicates that they would not have overturned it if the referee hadn’t give the penalty.

A number of Wolves fans thought that Guardiola’s claim was a cop out, or that he was merely lying as he may have thought that it was not a penalty.
