CA board to decide on pay war's end

The end to Australian cricket’s pay war hinges on Cricket Australia’s board of independent directors who must approve the new compromise deal being drafted

Daniel Brettig31-Jul-2017

Cricket Australia’s board of independently-appointed directors, headed by David Peever, must approve the compromise deal in the works•CA

An end to Australian cricket’s pay war hinges on the same place it started – Cricket Australia’s board of independent directors. It was the change of the CA board from 14 state-appointed delegates to nine independently-appointed directors in October 2012 that provided a major catalyst for the governing body’s attempt to break up the fixed revenue percentage models at the heart of all collective bargaining agreements between the board and the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) over the past 20 years. Now, the compromise deal being thrashed out and drafted, in talks between the CA chief executive James Sutherland and his ACA counterpart Alistair Nicholson, must be approved by the same directors – chairman David Peever, Mark Taylor, Bob Every, Jacquie Hey, Earl Eddings, Tony Harrison, Michael Kasprowicz, Michelle Tredenick and John Harnden – who pushed for change in the first place. The hand of Peever and his directors has been evident throughout the process, which began formally with a meeting between the CA chairman and the ACA president Greg Dyer last November. Directors have, in the words of Taylor, been updated via teleconferences “every three days, sometimes a bit more often if need be”.Most recently, private talks between Sutherland and Nicholson were dramatically reset when, following a board phone hook-up on Wednesday, the CA chief executive went public with the governing body’s desire to get a deal done by early this week or to take “residual matters” to private arbitration before a retired judge. Talks between the parties are going on late into Monday night, but directors are said to be confident of CA’s ability to win the argument against revenue-sharing in that kind of forum. They have been closely linked to Kevin Roberts, CA’s lead negotiator, until Sutherland entered the fray in the final days before the previous MoU expired on July 1. Roberts had joined the CA board as one of its first independent directors five years ago, a matter of months after the most recent revenue sharing agreement was finalised, before moving to the executive management team in late 2015.David Peever had defended CA’s proposal, calling their offer a generous one in a column in earlier this month•IDI/Getty Images

At the time, Roberts was seen as a possible successor to Sutherland, due to his strong corporate background, and also because the move of a CA board director into management was virtually without precedent in the organisation’s history. Roberts’ role in leading negotiations for CA mirrored Sutherland’s own role as lieutenant to his predecessor Malcolm Speed before taking the top job in 2001.Public pronouncements by board directors have been few and far between during the dispute, limited to television appearances by Taylor, who in May spoke stridently of the impasse and expressed his frustration at the lack of meaningful negotiation.A little less than two months later, Taylor offered a more conciliatory tone at Ashes launch on July 11, which followed the MoU expiry that left more than 230 players out of contract, and called for an MoU compromise.Yet, the more hawkish views evident on the board were underlined just two days later, when Peever penned an indignant column in newspaper that was then posted on the board’s website. In it, he attacked the ACA and the media for peddling “myths” about his industrial relations history with the mining firm Rio Tinto, where he served as managing director in Australia until 2012. He also pitched for CA’s hardline position in very similar ways to Sutherland during his multiple public appearances over the same period. With days remaining before determinations must be made on issues like the looming Test tour of Bangladesh, and a raft of commercial agreements with broadcasters and sponsors around the home Ashes summer, the biggest question is whether the CA board will show a level of flexibility more in line with the words of the former captain Taylor than those of the current chairman Peever.

Liverpool Plotting Swoop To Sign £17m "Leader" For Klopp

Liverpool are keen to strike a deal to bring Fluminense star Andre to the Premier League, according to fresh reports.

Who is Liverpool transfer target Andre?

Andre is naturally a defensive midfielder who has played his football at the Maracana Stadium since his youth days, having graduated from the club’s academy to get promoted to their senior side back in March 2021, where he’s so far registered a total of 143 appearances across all age levels to date.

The Brazil international still has another three years to run on his contract with his homeland outfit, but it appears he’s caught the eye of FSG and Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside.

Football Transfers reported earlier this month that the Reds had made an initial approach for the 22-year-old, and whilst the outlet also stated that the Serie A outfit would be willing to listen to offers for their prized asset, they won’t be happy to let him go until the end of their season, which finishes in December.

The Anfield side, however, don’t seem to be put off by the fact that buying him right now isn’t necessarily a feasible option, as they have once again been name-checked in a fresh update surrounding their target’s transfer situation.

Are Liverpool signing Andre?

According to Portuguese outlet Record (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are "keen" to sign Andre, and this has worried the powers that be at Fluminense, with the English transfer window open for another month.

Indeed, FSG's "financial power" will make it "more difficult" for them to retain their star's services, whilst also potentially making them up his asking price.

The Brazilian squad "know they have gold in their hands", and will therefore only sanction his sale for a fee worth over €20m (£17m), with it once again being stated that they want to reach an agreement that would see Andre leave in January.

Who could Andre replace at Anfield?

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool defensive midfielder Fabinho is close to joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, so if he is to depart – as looks the case currently – Klopp will need to find a suitable replacement in front of the backline, and having been dubbed a “leader” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Andre could be the perfect candidate.

The member of Carlos Leite's agency, Andre has won 22 out of his 27 tackles made so far this season, which is the best success rate throughout the squad, via FBref, whilst averaging 1.5 interceptions per 90 – which is comfortably the most impressive rate in the team given he is a regular in the side.

The Ibirataia native, who has the versatility to operate in various roles across the midfield, has a 93.7% pass success rate, indicating a calmness and composure on the ball, with this passing accuracy being higher than any of the regular starters managed last term at Anfield, suggesting he'd be an upgrade for Klopp based on the current options he has at his disposal.

Chelsea Close to Landing Willian 2.0 With £17m "Jewel"

Chelsea have enjoyed their fair share of Brazilian talents throughout the years. Not all of them have been successful, however (Mineiro who?) yet the likes of Oscar, Ramires and David Luiz all won trophies at Stamford Bridge.

The one that stands out is Willian. The winger won every domestic trophy with the Blues and made 339 appearances for the club across seven fruitful seasons, registering an impressive 123 goal contributions in the process.

There is no doubt he is arguably the finest Brazilian to play for the club. Mauricio Pochettino could be about to repeat that Willian masterclass, as a move for Deivid Washington is edging closer.

Are Chelsea signing Deivid Washington?

Pochettino is beginning to ramp up his transfer activity ahead of their Premier League campaign starting this weekend, with Axel Disasi and Robert Sanchez the latest recruits, while Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on another deal.

He tweeted: “Deivid Washington to Chelsea, deal now imminent after official bid submitted in the last hours for 2005 born Brazilian striker.

“Deivid agreed personal terms and wants #CFC move — Strasbourg loan to follow. €20m package bid submitted as per Globo… Santos, set to accept.”

Chelsea have already signed one Brazilian from Santos this summer, with Angelo arriving in July, and it looks as though Washington will be next for a fee of just €20m (£17m).

Who is Deivid Washington?

Judging by his early transfer business, it is evident that Pochettino is building a team that will not only improve Chelsea immediately, but also one that could take the league by storm in the future.

Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson are both under the age of 26, while Angelo and Lesley Ugochukwu are 18 and 19 respectively.

The 18-year-old Washington certainly falls into the future star category, yet he has taken Brazil by storm recently. The striker has already made 16 appearances for Santos, scoring twice in the process, and he has enjoyed a solid start to life in the senior ranks.

Willian

The youngster has started five games in the Brazilian top flight this term and has displayed his keen eye for goal, averaging 1.9 shots per game and has succeeded with one dribble per game – a success rate of 50% – suggesting that he enjoys taking on opposition defenders when in the mood.

The striker also won 3.4 total duels per game, indicating that he can be physical when required and this will stand him in good stead ahead of a move to the Premier League.

Journalist Vinicius Batista claimed that “Santos has already found its jewel in 2023” when referring to Washington, and it appears as though Chelsea have managed to secure the signature of a wonderful teenage prodigy.

Willian arrived at Stamford Bridge as a more established player, having won the UEFA Cup and five league titles with Shakhtar Donetsk, going on to register 11 goal contributions during his maiden campaign in England.

Washington won't be expected to match these heights straight away given his tender years, yet with a bright future in front of him, Pochettino could develop the youngster into a striker who could have the potential to become Chelsea’s finest ever Brazilian player.

AFL coach Guy McKenna takes up cricket role with Victoria

The former senior coach of the AFL club Gold Coast is set to take cricket’s side in the war for Australian sporting talent after signing as a coaching and talent identification specialist for Victoria

Guy McKenna, the former senior coach of the AFL club Gold Coast, is set to take cricket’s side in the war for Australian sporting talent after signing as a coaching and talent identification specialist for Victoria. As inaugural coach of the Gold Coast Suns, McKenna was in charge for 88 games, winning 24 – a record that compared favourably to the fellow expansion club Greater Western Sydney Giants over the same period – and since his 2014 departure has worked as an assistant at Essendon alongside his former West Coast captain, John Worsfold. McKenna played 267 games for the Eagles, including premierships in 1992 and 1994 and multiple selections in the league’s team of the year. His appointment is part of a newly-expanded coaching and talent identification unit for Australia’s second-largest state, which has long been seen as an underachiever in terms of providing top-class players for the national team. This has been largely attributed to the AFL’s stranglehold on much of the state’s best young sporting talent. That state of affairs was underlined by the debate earlier this year over whether or not Will Sutherland, Australia Under-19s captain and son of the Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland, would choose cricket or football. After being courted by numerous AFL talent scouts, Sutherland ultimately went with cricket after Victoria offered him a multi-year rookie deal, but he is very much an exception to the rule.”There are lots of reasons for my interest in this role. I’ve spent more than 30 years in AFL at all levels and I’m ready for the change and new challenge this role provides,” McKenna said. “Cricket dominates the summer landscape. Hopefully, I can bring some of my experience as both a senior coach and a player into cricket and use that knowledge to help identify, manage and deliver the next generation of Victorian and hopefully Australian cricketers.”I’ll have plenty of good people around me in the department who know cricket inside out.”Other members of the department in which McKenna will work include the former Bushrangers opening batsman and Footscray Premier cricketer Dean Russ, and also the former Australian player and more recently senior coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick. Victoria’s cricket operations manager Shaun Graf said the state had been looking for a wide skill-base.”We’ve been able to assemble an impressive list of people who collectively bring a broad range of skills to the table,” he said. “Cathryn’s reputation in cricket needs no introduction and Guy brings a unique perspective on athlete management and finding the right attributes for success.”This group will play a key role out in the field, looking at what we can do better with emerging players and ensuring we have the best systems and structures in place to ensure Victoria continues to produce players in the national pathway.”

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp Aims Brutal Dig At Newcastle Coach

Jurgen Klopp is not one to hold back what he truly thinks, making for some fairly famous quotes throughout his time at Liverpool.

Catch the German in a fiery mood, and he may well give you an explosive answer. Meanwhile, as proven in his recent press conference, he’s not afraid to take aim at his fellow managers, even in a light-hearted way.

Asked about the new Premier League rule, which allows just one member of staff to stand in the technical area, Klopp hit back with an instant reply, and jokingly took aim at Newcastle United’s Jason Tindall and Eddie Howe.

Whether or not the Newcastle coaches make their response remains to be seen, but Klopp certainly enjoyed the chance to take aim at those at St James’ Park.

What did Jurgen Klopp say?

As you can see from the video posted by Hayters TV, Klopp shared his thoughts on the new rule, signalling a flurry of laughter from the press room, saying: “I think it’s only for one team a real problem, Newcastle.”

After cracking up himself, he then added a sarcastic: “Sorry!”

Of course, the Liverpool manager isn’t exactly wrong, either. Tindall and Howe both operated from within the technical area last season, with the former even going viral with just how much he is involved for the Magpies.

An assistant manager in the loosest of ways, Tindall must now figure out a way to keep his influence going at Newcastle, whilst attempting to not break the new rule set by the Premier League.

With a game against Liverpool coming up at the end of August too, we’re sure that Klopp will be keeping a keen eye on what’s going on next to him in the dugout.

What’s the latest Liverpool transfer news?

When it comes to the transfer window, to say that Liverpool have had a nightmare month would be the understatement of the year. First, the Reds lost both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia, leaving them short in midfield.

Then, they tussled with Southampton in a public manner, attempting to bargain the Saints’ reported £50m valuation of Romeo Lavia down by placing bids going up into the late £40m mark ever so slightly.

To top things off, the Premier League giants then agreed a deal with Brighton & Hove Albion, as confirmed by Klopp, to sign Moises Caicedo, only for the midfielder to reject the Reds in favour of what is now a pending move to Chelsea, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Coming full circle, they have finally agreed a deal with Southampton to sign Lavia, according to The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg, after seeing a £60m bid accepted. This, of course, follows their initial reluctance to meet the Saints’ £50m valuation.

With Chelsea also pursuing the Belgian, however, Liverpool could see both of their targets end the summer at Stamford Bridge, leaving them without a defensive midfielder, altogether.

The more it’s looked at, the more Liverpool’s summer transfer window becomes the stuff of nightmares. With the Premier League season underway, the Reds must find themselves a defensive midfielder, whether that’s through the signing of Lavia or another option found elsewhere in the coming weeks.

Khawaja critical of Australia selection policy

Batsman questions selectors’ policy in Asian Test matches this year, saying constant changes created “a lot of instability in the team”

Usman Khawaja, Australia’s likely Ashes No. 3 batsman, has questioned the selectors’ policy in Asian Test matches this year, saying that the changes from last summer’s refreshed top six had created “a lot of instability in the team”.After playing a central role in the batting order during the home summer, assuming a more senior role alongside the newly promoted duo of Matt Renshaw and Peter Handscomb, Khawaja was summarily dropped for the India tour that followed on account of a poor batting record in previous appearances in the region.Having carried the drinks throughout that series, Khawaja was recalled for the first Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka, but two cheap dismissals later and he was again on the outside in Chittagong. While widely expected to resume in more familiar climes against England, Khawaja said he remained unconvinced about the merits of unsettling chopping and changing a Test match batting order according to the conditions.”They never used to do it before, I’m not really sure why they do it now,” Khawaja told ABC Radio. “It creates a lot of instability in the team I reckon, going in and out for everyone. You hear things like ‘the players are playing afraid’ or whatnot, but that’s what happens when you drop players all the time. We’ve been doing that a fair bit lately.”I know as captain of Queensland I try and avoid that as much as possible; players I pick in the first game, I try to stick with them as long as possible, because they’ll always be the best players on the park. For some reason it seems like lately in Australia that the best players always seem to be the next guy in, which I don’t totally agree with.”[It is] very hard to develop your game and play some consistent cricket if you’re not getting consistent opportunities overseas, which I haven’t been getting. It’s frustrating but I’ve just got to focus on what’s in front of me. I’d love to win an Ashes series – it’s something I haven’t been able to do yet.”In contrast to the approach he saw being taken in Asia, Khawaja predicted Australia’s Ashes lineup would contain relatively few surprises, reasoning that the selectors and the national captain Steven Smith had been thinking about their ideal XI for some time. The inclusions of Renshaw and Handscomb came at a time when they were able to take part in 10 Tests before going into the Gabba Test against England in late November.”I think the Australian team is pretty stable. I’m confident the selectors already know what their make-up of the team is going to be for the first Test,” Khawaja said. “There might be a few positions up for grabs depending on what happens in the Shield games but I’m pretty confident they know what they’re expecting.”There was a big change last year, we brought in younger players, Renshaw, Handscomb came into the team, they did that to develop them over time, not to throw them in the deep end of the Ashes and those two have played really well. So I think they’ve been planning for this for a while. There’s a fair bit of stability there.”
