Nott’m Forest vs Sheff Utd: Head-to-head record, key stats & more

With the 2023/24 Premier League campaign kicking off last week, Nottingham Forest will be looking to bounce back from their opening-day defeat at Arsenal in front of their home fans this weekend.

The Reds were beaten by the Gunners on Saturday lunchtime, with Taiwo Awoniyi's consolation unable to spark a successful turnaround at the Emirates Stadium.

After gaining automatic promotion from the Championship, Sheffield United's first away trip of the season comes at the City Ground, as they seek their first points of the season after being beaten themselves by Crystal Palace.

Ahead of the clash at the City Ground, Football FanCast takes a deeper look into the previous meetings in years gone by…

Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: Who has the better head-to-head record?

There isn't much separating these two sides in this statistic, but Nottingham Forest just edge it.

The pair have each had their own spells of dominance in this fixture, with Sheffield United claiming 11 wins across their 16 meetings between 1925 and 1952, whilst Forest got their own back from 1963 to 1971, going unbeaten against the Blades during this period.

In recent times, the results have constantly swung back and forth, which is evinced in the stat below.

Nottingham Forest wins: 46 Draws: 32 Sheffield United wins: 44 Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: Who has the more wins at the City Ground?

Forest will certainly be the favourites in their first home game of the campaign. Last term, the east Midlanders won the majority of their points at the City Ground, and it was a difficult place to go to, even for some of the league's strongest teams.

Treble winners Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw there in February, and three months later, Arsenal suffered a fatal blow in their title charge after Steve Cooper's side clinched a 1-0 victory to hand the Premier League trophy to the Citizens – whilst retaining their top-flight status in the process.

Though, Sheffield United can take some comfort in the fact that they've had their fair share of victories away at the Reds.

Nottingham Forest wins: 27 Draws: 16 Sheffield United wins: 17 Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: Who has the better cup record?

Sheffield United have never met the Tricky Trees in any cup competition other than the FA Cup, where they have racked up a sizable advantage in victories.

The Blades are four-time FA Cup winners in comparison to Forest's two triumphs, but they have never won the League Cup, whilst the east Midlanders have won the competition on four occasions.

But it is Paul Heckingbottom's side who tend to come out on top when they are pitted against each other in the cup, with the Blades' last victory coming en route to the FA Cup semis in 2014.

Nottingham Forest wins: 3 Draws: 3 Sheffield United wins: 8 Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: What were the last five meetings?

17th May 2022 – Nottingham Forest 1-2 Sheffield United: The last meeting between the pair saw Forest clinch a dramatic victory in the play-off semi-final second leg via a penalty shootout.

Brice Samba saved spot-kicks from Oliver Norwood, Conor Hourihane and Morgan Gibbs-White to send his side through to the play-off final at Wembley, where they defeated Huddersfield Town 1-0 to gain promotion to the Premier League, ending their 23-year absence from the division.

14th May 2022 – Sheffield United 1-2 Nottingham Forest: Three days prior, Forest defeated the Blades 2-1 at Bramall Lane thanks to goals from Jack Colback and Brennan Johnson, who scored his 19th goal of the campaign.

Norway international Sander Berge netted a vital stoppage-time consolation goal, which kept the tie well and truly alive going into the second leg at the City ground.

This fixture was the first time the two sides had ever faced each other in the play-offs.

4th March 2022 – Sheffield United 1-1 Nottingham Forest: Ryan Yates headed home a last-gasp equaliser to keep Forest within touching distance of the top six.

The crucial away point moved them up to eighth, two points adrift of the sixth-placed Blades, who were on the verge of moving five points ahead of their promotion-challenging rivals.

Ulitmately, Cooper's side ended the campaign in fourth on 80 points whilst Paul Heckingbottom's Sheffield United finished 5th on 75 points, setting up the aforementioned play-off semi-final clash.

2nd November 2021 – Nottingham Forest 1-1 Sheffield United: The reverse fixture produced the same result, and it was the east Midlanders again who fought back late on to salvage a point.

Morgan Gibbs-White broke the deadlock in the 78th minute for Sheffield United before Lewis Grabban levelled in the 83rd. At times, it was an 'ill-tempered' clash as the pair fought to get back into the win column.

Neither side had hit their rhythm yet, with Forest languishing in 16th at that stage, whilst the Blades sat one place above their eventual play-off rivals on goal difference.

19th April 2019 – Sheffield United 2-0 Nottingham Forest: Sheffield United moved into second place after defeating 10-man Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Bramall Lane. Chris Wilder's side went up that season, pipping Leeds United to the final automatic promotion spot.

Forest, under the stewardship of Martin O'Neill, sunk into 13th, 10 points adrift of the play-off places with three games to spare.

Who has played for Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United?

Billy Sharp (Sheffield United 2004-2005, 2007-2010, 2015-2023; Nottingham Forest 2012-13): The Championship's all-time top goalscorer spent a year on loan at Forest from Southampton during the 2012/13 season. He netted 10 league goals that year whilst laying on five assists.

Sharp made 377 appearances for boyhood club Sheffield United, scoring 129 goals whilst providing 44 assists. He was an integral part of the club's promotion to both the Championship and the Premier League.

The striker is now a free agent after being released at the end of the season. Rotherham United had been in talks to sign the 37-year-old, but if reports are to be believed, they decided to pull out due to the time it has taken him to make a decision.

David McGoldrick (Nottingham Forest 2009-2013; Sheffield United 2018-2022): The Republic of Ireland international was on Forest's books for four years. He made 73 appearances in total, scoring nine goals whilst providing five assists.

His time at Bramall Lane was far more fruitful. McGoldrick, like Sharp, was a key player during the club's return back to the Premier League, after spending 12 years outside of the division. The centre-forward racked up 42 goal contributions in 136 games for the Blades.

He now plies his trade in League Two with Notts County, who signed the forward this summer on a free transfer following a 25-goal season with League One outfit Derby County.

Oliver Burke (Nottingham Forest 2013-2016; Sheffield United 2020-2022): Burke, a Nottingham Forest academy graduate, was snapped up by RB Leipzig in 2016 for £13m after netting four goals in five games at the start of the 2016/17 Championship campaign. His time in Forest's first team was short-lived, making just 31 appearances.

He joined Sheffield United in September 2020 from West Bromwich Albion and went on to appear 36 times, which remarkably is the most amount of games he's played at a single club. The 26-year-old is now at Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen.

Adlene Guedioura (Nottingham Forest 2012-13, 2018-2019; Sheffield United 2021-2022): The 62-cap Algeria international made a century of appearances for Forest across his two spells at the club.

Contrastingly, he appeared just twice for Sheffield United across a brief four-month spell and will certainly be better known for his time in a Forest shirt.

Guedioura, 37, is currently playing his football in Qatar with Al Wakrah SC.

Ben Osborn (Nottingham Forest 2014-2019; Sheffield United 2019-present): Osborn graduated from the Nottingham Forest academy and went on to make 230 appearances for the club before sealing a Premier League move to Sheffield United in 2019.

The former England youth international has been a valuable member of the Blades' squad over the last four years and now has the chance to play in the top flight again this season.

What is Nottingham Forest's biggest win over Sheffield United?

9th October 1976 – Nottingham Forest 6-1 Sheffield United: The Tricky Trees' biggest win over Sheffield United came during Brian Clough's era, as his side annihilated the Blades thanks to goals from Viv Anderson, Terry Curran, Peter Withe, Barry Butlin and a brace netted by Ian Bowyer.

The east Midlands club gained automatic promotion that year from the second tier of English football.

What is Sheffield United's biggest win over Nottingham Forest?

3rd December 1904 – Sheffield United 4-0 Nottingham Forest: It has been well over a century since Sheffield United's biggest victory over Nottingham Forest.

John Nicholson was the club secretary back then, but often took duties associated with being a modern-day manager. Nicholson's side dispatched the Reds handsomely thanks to goals from Alonzo Drake, John Lang, Jimmy Donnelly and Arthur Brown, with the latter finishing the campaign as the division's top goalscorer after netting 23 times.

They finished in sixth place, eight points adrift of champions Newcastle United whilst Forest ended the campaign in 16th.

Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: Key match stats This will be the 123rd meeting between the pair The two sides will be in England's top flight simultaneously for the first time since the 1992/93 campaign Brennan Johnson has scored in his last two appearances against the Blades Morgan Gibbs-White will face his former side for the first time since departing Bramall Lane

Empate do Fogão

Domínio do Glorioso

Duas vezes o Corinthians no ‘quase’

Brilha a estrela do marfinense

Formado no Terrão do Corinthians, o atacante Jô é a cara do clube do Parque São Jorge.

Dhoni should approach T20s differently – Ganguly

Former India captain asks Shastri, Kohli to tell Dhoni to express himself “more freely” to derive the most out of his batting

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Nov-2017

AFP

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes MS Dhoni needs to change his batting approach in Twenty20s to be successful. Ganguly also said Dhoni still has a lot of one-day cricket left in him, but he was more concerned about the wicketkeeper-batsman’s record in T20s. Ganguly’s blunt appraisal followed strong words of support Dhoni received from coach Ravi Shastri and captain Virat Kohli last week. However, Ganguly felt the pair needed to tell India’s senior-most player to express himself more freely if they were to derive the most out of Dhoni’s batting. “His record in T20I is not that good compared to ODIs,” Ganguly said in Kolkata on Sunday. “I hope Kohli and the team management will speak to him separately. He has immense ability. If he approaches T20Is differently, then he will be successful. I think he should keep playing one-day cricket, but he has to play differently in T20Is. He has to play T20Is freely. It depends on the selectors and how they would like to play him.”Dhoni’s place in the T20 team became the topic of discussion after India’s 40-run loss in the second T20I against New Zealand in Rajkot. His 37-ball 49 raised questions as it elevated the required run rate in India’s chase of 197, even as Kohli struck a more aggressive 65 off 42 on a flat pitch. It prompted former players, most notably VVS Laxman, Dhoni’s former India team-mate, to question his strike rate and inability to hit big shots.Even as the debate has raged on about his future, Dhoni remained unruffled. In his first reaction, Dhoni refrained from responding to criticism, brushing it off gently while launching his first cricket academy overseas. “Everybody has views in life and it should be respected,” Dhoni said in Dubai on Saturday. “I have always felt that sport is one way of learning about life. How you deal with disappointments, how you are supposed to come in front of people when you have either you have won or lost a game. At the same time, how you stand up to criticism, and how you have an open mind about learning and improving yourself.”Dhoni stressed he was still inspired to play for the country and his hunger to perform had not diminished. “Representing the country is the best motivation for me. We play cricket for only a span of time. We play for one year to 15 years, some play for 20 years. But in a lifespan, say you live for 70 years, 10-15 years is nothing.”The only thing I can say is that I am representing my country. My biggest motivation is being part of the Indian cricket team. I have always believed that the process is more important than the result. At the end of the day when the match gets over, if I look into the mirror and say to myself that I have tried my best, then I am satisfied.”

Man Utd: Ten Hag Can Finally Ditch Martial With £231k-p/w Whiz

The summer transfer window slams shut at the start of next month and it remains to be seen whether or not Anthony Martial will still be a Manchester United player when it does.

What's the latest Anthony Martial transfer news?

It was recently reported by The Mirror that the club plan to hold talks with the French attacker to make a decision on his future at Old Trafford.

The report claimed that Italian giants Inter, who reached the Champions League final last season, and fellow Premier League side West Ham United are both interested in a deal for the former AS Monaco sensation.

United boss Erik ten Hag could finally decide to sanction an exit for the 27-year-old forward, who has been at the club since 2015, by securing a deal for another versatile attacker to take his place within the squad.

Who could replace Anthony Martial at Manchester United?

The Dutch head coach could ditch the France international by signing reported transfer target Ansu Fati from Spanish giants Barcelona, who have reportedly valued him at €70m (£60m).

Martial, who has been capped 30 times by his country, can play in several positions across the frontline and has spent the majority of his career as either a striker or a left winger.

The Spain international would be able to offer a similar level of versatility as he has been deployed in those two positions the most in his short career to date, whilst the young talent also has experience playing on the right.

Fati could also be an upgrade in terms of the quality that he is able to produce at the top end of the pitch. The 20-year-old ace scored seven goals and provided four assists in 12 LaLiga starts for Barcelona last season, which came after four goals in three league starts during the 2021/22 campaign.

Martial, meanwhile, produced six goals and two assists in 11 Premier League starts last term and one goal in two starts throughout the previous season.

Barcelona forward Ansu Fati.

Fati ranks within the top 1% of his positional peers among Europe's top five divisions for non-penalty expected goals (xG) per 90 (0.56) over the last 365 days, which essentially means that he excels at getting himself into high-quality scoring positions on a regular basis.

Whereas, the United striker ranks in the top 12% with 0.45 non-penalty xG per 90. This suggests that the Spaniard could provide a greater attacking threat with his ability to be in the right place at the right time to earn excellent chances in front of goal.

The £231k-per-week whiz would also come in with more long-term potential than Martial as he is seven years younger than the Red Devils outcast.

This means that Fati has plenty of years left ahead of him to hone his skills and develop his game to become an even better player, whilst already having the ability – given his form for Barcelona – to offer more than the current United dynamo this season.

Therefore, Ten Hag could safely sanction an exit for Martial this summer by signing the "generational" – as dubbed by his boss Xavi – magician from the Spanish side as he would have a sublime replacement, in the short and long-term, at the club.

Shaw ton, Iyer fifty prop up Mumbai

Ashwin takes two wickets to help Tamil Nadu pull things back; Vihari’s second successive century gives Andhra control against Odisha

Prithvi Shaw’s struck his third-first class hundred in only his fourth game as Mumbai went to stumps on 314 for 7 against Tamil Nadu at the Bandra Kurla Complex. Shreyas Iyer, picked in India’s T20 squad for the New Zealand series on Monday, made a counter-attacking 57.Electing to bat, Mumbai lost opener Akhil Herwadkar in the second over to seamer Yo Mahesh, playing his first game for Tamil Nadu in over three years. Mumbai, however, counterattacked through Shaw and Iyer; the pair added 98 off 118 balls. Shaw continued to score briskly even after Iyer’s dismissal – first in the company of Suryakumar Yadav, who made a run-a-ball 39, and then Siddesh Lad – and raised stands of 63 and 51 respectively for the third and fourth wickets.Tamil Nadu slowed down the scoring-rate by chipping away. After Yo Mahesh had Suryakumar lbw, India offspinner R Ashwin removed Lad and Shaw, who finished with 123 off 155 balls, including 17 fours and two sixes. Captain Aditya Tare (53) and Abhishek Nayar repaired the innings with a 63-run stand for the sixth wicket, but Vijay Shankar returned to dismiss Tare and Vijay Gohil to even things out. Ashwin (29-5-77-2) was the most economical bowler on the day.Tamil Nadu had an injury scare when allrounder Vijay Shankar landed awkwardly on his left ankle while celebrating a dismissal in the penultimate over of the day. Coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar said ice was applied on Shankar’s ankle that was subsequently strapped. “We need to wait and see how he holds up tomorrow,” Kanitkar told ESPNcricinfo. Shankar was Tamil Nadu’s most successful bowler on the day, taking three wickets.Centuries from captain Hanuma Vihari (143*) and opener DB Prasanth (127) and put Andhra in a commanding position as they finished on 278 for 2 against Odisha in Vizianagaram. This was Vihari’s second hundred in as many innings after he smashed 150 against Baroda in the previous round.Andhra’s decision to bat first received an early setback after KS Bharat was bowled by seamer Suryakant Pradhan in the sixth over. Prasanth and Vihari, though, put on 270 runs for the second wicket to frustrate Odisha. Both players scored 17 fours and Prasanth hit two sixes to Vihari’s one. It wasn’t until the penultimate over that Odisha achieved a breakthrough, as Basant Mohanty bowled Prasanth.Madhya Pradesh seamer Ishwar Pandey’s triple-strike reduced Tripura to 88 for 6 in Agartala on a day when only 40 overs were possible. Opting to bat, Tripura was immediately on the backfoot after opener Udiyan Bose was removed by Pandey. It triggered the fall of batsmen at regular intervals and from 53 for 2 Tripura slumped to 81 for 5. Only opener Bishal Ghosh (42*) resisted. Left-arm spinner Ankit Sharma complemented Ishwar’s spell with two wickets.

Arsenal Interested In Signing "Incredible" £60m Star

Arsenal have now been provided with a new update on their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi by transfer insider Dean Jones.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The Gunners are searching for a new centre-back, in light of Jurrien Timber's recent injury blow, and they have now set their sights on Galatasaray's Victor Nelsson, who has a release clause of just €25m (£21m) included in his contract.

Journalist Rudy Galetti has made it clear that a number of options are being considered, with four targets currently on the shortlist, however Mikel Arteta may be forced to reduce it to three, as Barcelona are unwilling to sell Erik Garcia.

The La Liga club are unwilling to sanction a loan move this close to the end of the summer transfer window, so Arteta may have to turn his attentions elsewhere, with Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba previously being named as a potential option.

However, the German club have made it clear that Tapsoba will not be available on the cheap, with Football Insider reporting they are set to hold out for a fee of £50m, which has proven to be "prohibitive" for north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Another one of Arsenal's more expensive centre-back targets is Guehi, with Jones recently telling GiveMeSport that Palace's asking price may increase at this stage of the window, considering they would not have much time to bring in a replacement.

The transfer insider said: The Marc Guehi interest has been there for a while. I don’t know that it necessarily would combine well with any interest from Takehiro Tomiyasu from Palace because Palace have no intention to lose Guehi and value him very, very highly.

“Earlier in the window I was being told of a £60m valuation on him and to be honest at this stage of the window it has probably risen. Guehi himself would even have reservations about how he fits in with Gabriel, William Saliba, Ben White and Jurrien Timber over the course of the season because he definitely needs regular game time to get into the England squad and won’t want to be fighting for his spot on a weekly basis, even at a big club like that.”

How tall is Marc Guehi?

The Palace star is not the tallest of centre-backs, standing at 6 foot, however he has been very effective for Palace over the past two seasons, with his performances earning him an England call-up, featuring for the Three Lions against Malta in the summer.

Lauded as "incredible" by members of the media, the former Swansea City man particularly specialises in tackling, with no player aged 21 or under averaging a better tackle success rate in England's top two tiers during the 2020-21 season.

Having now proven himself in the top flight, the 22-year-old could now be ready to make the step-up to a club the size of Arsenal, but it does not seem like a move that is likely to happen before the deadline.

Guehi's inflated asking price could dissuade the Gunners from making an approach, and he may not even be keen on the move himself at this stage of the career.
