McCarthy's five-wicket haul helps Ireland level series

Earlier, Paul Stirling’s 82 helped Ireland reach 271 after electing to bat

The Report by Peter Della Penna in Sharjah07-Dec-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:52

‘Our seamers were more effective today’ – McCarthy

Ireland captain William Porterfield has a long-established habit of chasing in limited-overs cricket. So it was a big surprise that on Thursday, after winning the toss, he decided to bat. Even more surprising was that, having left Boyd Rankin out, the man who rattled Afghanistan with 4 for 44 in the first ODI, Ireland stormed back to level the series with a 51-run win behind a maiden ODI five-for from his replacement in the XI, Barry McCarthy.Having been humbled by teenage spin phenom Mujeeb Zadran on ODI debut, the onus was on the openers Porterfield and Paul Stirling to repel his variations so that the middle order wasn’t exposed early. The pair did that and more, using the sweep to upset Mujeeb’s line and length during the course of a 115-run opening stand.Porterfield fell for 47, caught by mid-off while trying to pull Gulbadin Naib, and that opened the door for Afghanistan’s spinners. Mujeeb struck next over, trapping Andy Balbirnie with a standard offbreak. Ireland regrouped briefly before three wickets fell with the score on 160. Stirling, the key scalp for 82, and Gary Wilson were dismissed by back-to-back googlies from Rashid and then Niall O’Brien was out stumped attempting to drive Mujeeb. When Kevin O’Brien played around a fuller delivery from Dawlat Zadran a short time later, the score became 188 for 6 after 37.3 overs. But Afghanistan’s intensity waned and George Dockrell exploited it well enough to more than doubling his previous ODI best of 28. A scorching straight six in the final over off Mohammad Nabi propelled him to 62 not out. That lull in the field over the final 10 overs proved costly in the end for Afghanistan. After a methodical start from their openers, McCarthy got his banner night started by dismissing Ihsanullah in the 12th over.A 51-run stand between Javed Ahmadi and Rahmat Shah steadied Afghanistan, but McCarthy struck again, luring Ahmadi into a pull shot straight to deep square leg.All the while, Afghanistan’s batsmen looked comfortable but lacked for a sense of urgency. And their concentration kept faltering. Rahmat Shah overbalanced to be stumped off Dockrell and captain Asghar Stanikzai needlessly slogged Tim Murtagh to deep midwicket. The hammer blow, however, was struck by Peter Chase in the 38th over. With Mohammad Nabi humming and the required run-rate dragged down to just about a run-a-ball, the batsman dragged an expansive drive back onto the stumps.Sensing the opportunity to steal a win, Ireland’s fielding was near flawless in their final 13 overs. Stuart Poynter plucked a sharp catch at midwicket to send Naib back and give Chase his second wicket. Porterfield took a stunner to dismiss Nasir Jamal off McCarthy’s bowling in the 43rd over. The very next ball, Shafiqullah was bowled for a golden duck.McCarthy claimed his fifth wicket in dramatic style, yorking Dawlat in the 45th over. The match ended two balls later with Mujeeb being run-out after he dropped his bat. And so the night ended with Afghanistan receiving a rude wake-up call from Ireland’s medium pacers. It also set up a winner-take-all final round on Sunday.

Cutting, Doggett halt Scorchers' winning run

Brisbane Heat vault to the top of the table as Scorchers’ batting implodes in steep chase

Alex Malcolm05-Jan-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBrisbane Heat have made a statement by trouncing the Perth Scorchers at the Gabba to vault to the top of the BBL table. The Heat’s powerful batting line-up overcame a mid-first innings slump to score 94 from the last seven overs to post a winning total. Ben Cutting and Joe Burns were the chief architects in the salvage mission, and they were helped by some atypically sloppy fielding and death bowling from the Scorchers. The Heat then produced a disciplined, well-planned bowling performance to consign the Scorchers to their first loss of this BBL. The Heat will have to absorb the loss of Chris Lynn to international duty but it’s nothing compared to the Scorchers concerns as their attack is set to be decimated for the back half of the tournament.Heat hit a pot-hole
The Bash Brothers picked up where they left off against Melbourne Stars. Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum smashed 57 in the first five overs. Lynn was 31 off 15 balls before McCullum even faced a delivery. They did have some good fortune with three of the eight boundaries scored coming from two French cuts and an outside edge. When Lynn uncharacteristically mis-hit one off David Willey in the sixth over the game completely changed. McCullum was dropped in the outfield in the same over and the cavalier Heat retreated. They lost 4 for 40 in eight overs and only scored two boundaries with Ashton Agar and Joel Paris doing most of the squeezing.First cut is the deepest
Cutting hasn’t had many opportunities in the tournament so far, save for his 35 from 18 against the Melbourne Stars in round one. He had seven overs to bat with Burns to try and post a good score on a surface that was little slower than usual at the Gabba. But he looked to have failed when he top-edged a sweep off Agar. Andrew Tye ran in from deep backward square but grassed the chance sliding on his knees.Cutting was on one at the time. The first salt was added to Tye’s wound in the next over when Burns clubbed three sixes and a four. Further salt was added when Cutting launched three sixes off Paris. Tye did claim Burns, but Cutting’s boundary off the final ball of his spell ensured he finished with 1 for 47, the worst figures of his BBL career. Cutting cleared the rope twice more before holing out on the second last ball of the innings. But his 20-ball 46, with five bombs, helped the Heat score 94 from the last seven overs to post 6 for 191.Pace off in the Powerplay
The Scorchers love pace, both when bowling and batting. The Heat opted for spin in three of the first four overs of the run chase and they kept Willey and Michael Klinger exceptionally quiet. Burns raced through the first over at a cost of just four runs, which included two wides. Yasir Shah bowled two of the next three for just 12 runs. The Scorchers were 0 for 23 after four with Willey floundering on 6 off 12. Klinger felt the pinch and sliced a catch to third man trying to launch. Cartwright nicked off to slip next ball.Willey’s form at the top of the order has been intriguing. He has two T20 hundreds opening the batting in the T20 Blast in England and a career strike-rate of 142.40. He played well on a slow surface at Etihad Stadium against Melbourne Renegades but has struggled to adjust to the extra bounce and pace of both the WACA and the Gabba. He scored just 25 off 27 with one four and one six before holing out to Mitch Swepson.Late power outage
Incredibly, the Scorchers were 4 for 101 after 13 overs and ahead of the Heat’s score of 4 for 97 at the same stage. But the Scorchers don’t possess the same calibre of power hitters in the lower order as the Heat. Agar did make a brief dash hitting two sixes in 31 from 18 balls. He also received a reprieve from substitute fielder Cameron Gannon in the outfield but did not capitalize in the same manner as Cutting. He holed out to the same fielder off the same bowler, Mark Steketee, with the next ball he faced. Steketee finished with 3 for 28 from four overs while Brendan Doggett took the last four wickets to bag a career-best 5 for 35, but all four fell when the required run-rate had climbed above 20 per over.

Liverpool: Reds could perfect midfield with "complete" £52m star

Liverpool have welcomed three new faces to the midfield this summer, but Jurgen Klopp must target a further signing if his outfit are to succeed in the Premier League this season.

Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo have all arrived, but James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's expected departures were exacerbated by subsequent sales of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabian sides.

Fabinho's exit is particularly concerning; while the Brazilian was subpar last year, he was the club's undisputed anchor, and the Anfield side need to replace him.

Will Liverpool sign anyone before the deadline?

Endo's £16m signing from German side Stuttgart was to combat the failure to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, who both joined Chelsea, but the Japan captain is not the answer to all the club's issues and Liverpool must now push to sign touted summer target Cheick Doucoure.

According to RMC Sport, negotiations with Crystal Palace are at a standstill over their treasured holding midfielder, with 'no significant advances' in recent days, with the south London side demanding in excess of €60m (£52m) for his sale.

How good is Cheick Doucoure?

Liverpool have been overt admirers of the Malian midfielder for the best part of two months, having been reported to be exploring a move after Fabinho's sale to Al-Ittihad.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

The barrier over price and Palace's (non-existent) desire to sell a pivotal cog that only joined the club from French side Lens for £21m last summer has proved insurmountable for Klopp's outfit thus far, but as the end of the transfer window draws ever-closer Liverpool could yet test their divisional rivals' resolve.

The fact that Fenway Sport Group – Liverpool's owners – sanctioned a British-record £111m bid for Caicedo, albeit at the eleventh hour, proves that the coin purse bulges wide enough for a first-class No. 6 to join the fold, despite the expenditure for Endo's signature.

The 30-year-old has been dribbled past twice during both of his opening two fixtures for Liverpool, starting only the latter, and while he looks a valuable squad option, will likely prove to be a chink in the ambitious club's armour if cemented as the starring defensive midfielder for the season.

Crystal Palace midfielderCheick Doucoure.

Doucoure, comparatively, won Crystal Palace's Player of the Season award last term, beating the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Eberechi Eze and Joachim Andersen to the accolade, and was described as "the complete holding midfielder" by former boss Patrick Vieira.

A superlative ball-winner, Doucoure ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for interceptions, the top 17% for blocks and the top 20% for tackles and clearances per 90, as per FBref.

Endo, while ranking among the top 7% for clearances per 90, sits only among the top 55% of midfielders for tackles and in fact the bottom 28% for interceptions per 90.

This highlights a lack of mobility and robustness, something that the "combative, intelligent, and consistent" Doucoure – as dubbed by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – boasts in abundance.

To evidence the impact the Eagles star would have on Liverpool's team, the £60k-per-week gem has only been dribbled past 0.3 times per game across the opening phase of Palace's campaign, while making a remarkable 7.3 ball recoveries per outing – to highlight how impressive this is, Declan Rice averages 5.7 per match for Arsenal.

Klopp must ensure that Liverpool forge a successful season, especially after the bleak previous term, with a fifth-placed finish resulting in a failure to secure Champions League football this year, and it's now imperative that the club's glaring issue is rectified and indeed finally perfected.

Haynes, Sammy question Pybus' return to West Indies

The former team director was hired back by Cricket West Indies without an interview process

Nagraj Gollapudi16-Feb-2018

WICB

Desmond Haynes was right. The West Indies opening great had publicly questioned the process behind Richard Pybus’ return to cricket in the West Indies as high performance director – a post newly created by Cricket West Indies (CWI). The much-travelled coach returns just over a year after he had left as team director.”It would be great to ask the [CWI] president [Dave Cameron] about this appointment and when was this position advertised,” Haynes posted on his Facebook account. The answer, ESPNcricinfo can confirm, is that it wasn’t: the post was not advertised and Cameron did have a direct hand in Pybus’ appointment, without interviewing any candidates.Haynes was not the only skeptic. Darren Sammy, the former West Indies captain who led during Pybus’ tenure as director, expressed disbelief at his return on Twitter. “Lies lies lies… Must be fake news,” Sammy tweeted on February 9. A day later, in response to a reply, he tweeted: “Well I’m still hoping that nightmare is not true #fakenews he’s not coming back at CWI.”Johnny Grave, the CWI chief executive, would not comment on Cameron’s role in the matter but confirmed that Pybus’ appointment was approved by the board of directors. “Everyone, including the senior management at CWI, is behind Pybus’ appointment,” Grave told ESPNcricinfo.According to Grave, Pybus was headhunted and the Englishman will play a consultant’s role, working about 200 days a year over a two-year contract. Pybus is expected to be the “bridge” between Jimmy Adams, the director of cricket and the man who succeeded him, and Graeme West, who is the manager at the High Performance Centre (HPC) in Antigua.”It is a strategic appointment,” Grave said. “It is a two-year consultancy role and it is specifically to do with establishing the HPC at the Coolidge Cricket Ground [in Antigua]. And ensuring the franchise-based Professional Cricket League that Richard set up four years ago becomes an even more elite, professional environment.”Grave believes that even though players from the Caribbean have professional contracts to play regional cricket, a lot of work remains in order to create the elite environment of the best domestic competitions overseas. Pybus’ extensive experience, including his previous stint in the West Indies, makes him, in CWI’s eyes, the right choice. “Richard is specifically coming in to work with our franchise teams, establishing the HPC in Antigua, and to allow us to produce better cricketers on the international stage,” Grave said.Pybus’ first stint with CWI, which ended in January 2017 after three years, was a controversial one. It was Pybus who made it mandatory for a player to participate in the domestic first-class and one-day cricket tournaments to qualify for selection for West Indies. Many senior players vehemently opposed the policy and instead opted to solely operate in overseas Twenty20 leagues.Pybus, who was recently shortlisted for coach by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, did not react to Sammy’s tweets, but did defend his track record in reply to Haynes.”Hi Desmond, as I’m a FB friend I presume it’s for my attention too,” Pybus posted on Facebook late on February 14. “To clarify a couple of points, I was invited by Bangladesh to go and meet their board, I didn’t apply or was shortlisted for any positions. I’ve coached for nearly 30 years, I started the junior provincial program[me] at Border [in South Africa] with Mark Boucher, Makhaya Ntini and Justin Kemp. Went on to set up the Border Academy and coach Border. Mark and Makhaya both played in that team. Coached Pakistan at two Cricket World Cups, including the final in ’99. Fast forward through nine championships won across all formats in South Africa, 3 x double in three consecutive years, Steyn, Morkel, du Plessis coming through those winning set-ups.”And although WICB [CWI] doesn’t seem to get much credit for the three World Cups [World T20, Women’s World T20 and Under-19 World Cup] won in 2016, they weren’t an accident, the U-19 and women were run by the HP program[me]. I wasn’t replaced by Jimmy, I’d declined an extension. Regards Richard.”

Liverpool: Klopp could now unleash his next Hendo & Salah

As summer loomed at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, Liverpool were forlorn after failing to qualify for the Champions League despite constructing a nine-match unbeaten run to close the Premier League season.

Jurgen Klopp's side has endured a miserable year that was a consequence of ineptitude on the transfer market, which might sound harsh, but until the £35m signing of Alexis Mac Allister in June, Thiago Alcantara (in 2020, for £20m) had been the sole midfield acquisition since the arrivals of Fabinho and Naby Keita in the summer of 2018.

Of course, that's barring the loan signing of Arthur Melo on deadline day last year – who played just 13 minutes for the Reds – very much a panic-filled attempt to fortify the centre after failing to sign the desired target of Aurelien Tchouameni, instead deciding to wait until the following year.

This time around, it looks like Klopp and co have got it (largely) right, with the midfield now comprehensively transformed and last season's malaise already a fleeting memory after a promising start to the season, ten points from the opening four matches – including victories over Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Aston Villa and an inexorable draw to Chelsea.

Why did Jordan Henderson leave Liverpool?

As the revamped midfield roars into life, it does so at the expense of a wealth of aces integral to the construction of Klopp's dynasty, with James Milner, Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain departing in June as their contracts expired, Fabinho and captain Jordan Henderson being sold to Saudi Arabian sides and Fabio Carvalho joining RB Leipzig on loan.

The process was undoubtedly accelerated beyond the club's anticipation, however, with Fabinho and Henderson's heads turned by the lucrative and tantalising proposition of joining the Saudi revolution.

dan-neil-jordan-henderson-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

With so much leadership filtering out over the past several months, Klopp would have preferred to retain the services of long-time club servant Henderson, but by the player's own admission in a recent interview with The Athletic, 'a few things got the alarm bells ringing', with the England international saying "at no point did I feel wanted by the club or anyone to stay."

Sold to Al-Ettifaq for £13m in July, so ended an illustrious and industrious career on Merseyside, with the 33-year-old closing the door on a 492-appearance stay at Liverpool, with the one-time Sunderland youngster donning the armband for the whole gamut of trophy-winning success under Klopp's wing.

Liverpool's leader had gone, an emblematic figurehead of a prosperous period in the Premier League outfit's history, but given his aging legs and performances at the epicentre of the strife last term, married with the exciting start to the campaign as the new-look centre clicks into gear, his departure perhaps came at a fitting time.

It could have been so much worse, with one irreplaceable phenom also attracting attention from the Saudi Pro League wave…

Is Mohamed Salah leaving Liverpool?

Mohamed Salah. Heralded as "lightning" by Reds historian Carl Clemente and believed to be "one of the greatest of all time" by former Ballon d'Or winner Michael Owen – unequivocally one of Liverpool's finest stars in their distinguished history.

Signed from Italian side Roma in a £34m deal in 2017, the Egyptian forward, aged 31, has posted 188 goals and 81 assists from just 309 displays in Red, with his ferocious finishing and creative ingenuity paramount to the rise over the past years.

Still contracted until 2025, the £350k-per-week gem has been fervently pursued by Saudi side Al-Ittihad this summer, with the outfit tabling a staggering £150m bid on deadline day last week, though Liverpool's unwavering stance rebuffed the advances.

Despite this, the suitors are expected to return for Salah, likely in winter and – if their next advances are also rejected – next summer.

As per FBref, Salah ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past years and the top 9% for assists per 90, underscoring a value and threat as the attacking spearhead that will make for a stressful task in identifying a successor.

However, the Merseyside team might already boast some precocious talents on the books to grow into starring roles in Salah and Henderson's positions under the Anfield lights.

Who are Liverpool's most promising youngsters?

Liverpool do not have the most productive of youth academies in English football, but when an aspiring talent does break into first-team reckoning, they cement starring positions.

Steven Gerrard and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the notable names of past decades, but now Klopp could be on the cusp of welcoming two talented gems to the starting line-up with regularity.

First, Stefan Bajcetic has made his return to action of late after spending many months out injured, with the 18-year-old earning a spot on the bench for the last three outings in the Premier League.

The Spaniard rose to prominence last term as he earned minutes to combat the woes of the midfield, sapped of vitality and requiring a spark – earning praise for his "brilliant" start to life on the major stage and his "tenacious" displays by pundit Jamie Carragher.

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic.

Making 19 appearances and scoring a goal against Aston Villa after a box-crashing surge, Bajcetic took to life in the central midfield without seam, elegant on the ball and composed and brave in his presence, impressing with his range of passing, with Statman Dave claiming he “looked right at home”.

The youngster could well be the perfect heir to Henderson's position in the squad, and as he grows into his skin over the coming years he could match the intensity and intelligence of the former skipper at his best.

Replacing Salah is indeed a quandary of a whole new level, but with prodigious 17-year-old Ben Doak on the fast rise, such a burden could be alleviated.

Signed from Celtic last year, with Liverpool paying a compensation fee of about £600k, the Scottish teenager has already made six senior appearances and has been prolific at youth level, scoring 11 goals and supplying eight assists from just 22 games for the U18s and U21s.

An electric-paced, fleet-footed and buccaneering talent, Doak is already displaying some promising signs and there is every possibility that he will forge a career at the very top of the game, having been praised as a "special" prospect by Klopp.

Change is afoot at Anfield, but football endures. Henderson's leadership and staunch loyalty to Liverpool over the past decade or so has been crucial to the resurgence, and Salah has etched his name into the club's history as one of the most devastating forwards of the modern game.

It feels like Liverpool is approaching a new chapter, but with first-class talents such as Doak and Bajcetic rising to the fore, the silver-laden success could yet continue.

A conversa e o treinamento fizeram as coisas fluírem.
