Forget Piroe: Grayson’s promotion ‘legend’ would now be perfect for Leeds

Leeds United are one of England's finest footballing institutions, and as such boasts a rich history laden with European adventures, trophy-winning exploits and supremely memorable moments.

However, the former two have certainly been in short supply in recent memory, with their 2004 relegation proving to be catastrophic for the long-term future of the club. It would take 16 years for them to return to the top flight, enduring numerous trials and tribulations across that period which caused such misery.

The ever-changing and often dysfunctional hierarchies that oversaw such failure were largely to blame, as it was their financial mismanagement which led to dropping out of the Premier League, but even during their Championship stint and a brief flirtation with League One, the decision-making was torrid.

Even in the modern era, the same foolish errors continue to be made, with Andrea Radrizzani the latest villain to add to the long and ever-growing list. It was his choices which led them back into the second division, with Daniel Farke having been handed a broken outfit with the task of leading them to promotion.

That being said, already the German has taken great strides towards such a goal, having invested with intelligence over the summer to bolster a squad that was ravaged by various questionable clauses left in contracts by the old ownership.

With 15 senior players departing, it remained clear one position that needed particular strengthening: a striker. Fortunately for the former Norwich City boss, he got his man in Joel Piroe.

How is Joel Piroe playing?

Unloading around £10m to tempt Piroe to Elland Road marked an almighty bargain for the Yorkshire outfit, as it saw them instantly attain a proven goalscorer for this level.

Having joined Swansea City from his homeland, the former Feyenoord finisher would score 22 and assist six in his debut term, before recording a further 19 goals the following season.

Such consistency in front of goal is a rare commodity nowadays, with former boss Russell Martin having praised his performances: "If you wanted it to fall to anyone, it is him, he is so clinical with both feet, and he is a great technician.

"But the most important thing he has is the right mentality when he gets around the goal. He shows composure, he is calm, and he just focuses on his technique, something that all top strikers possess."

Former Swansea striker Joel Piroe.

Despite all of these starring attributes, which were in line to make him an instant hit at his new club, Farke clearly has other ideas. Although the Dutchman fired home a debut goal in their first and only win of the campaign thus far, their most recent fixture saw him deployed in a far deeper role, dropping into midfield at times.

Unsurprisingly, this nullified their attack, and they were held 0-0 by a poor Sheffield Wednesday side.

If the German is so intent on maintaining such a tactical notion, he will continue to draw frustration from fans. Many will likely even be harking back to their elite strikers of the past who could fulfil such a role, with there being one true standout in Jermaine Beckford who would surely fire them to promotion if he were to have his time again in Yorkshire.

How good was Jermaine Beckford?

Beckford is a hero around Elland Road, having come up from seemingly nowhere to fire them out of their darkest period as a club.

Playing non-league football whilst working as a repairman, it was a simple start to life for the now 39-year-old, who would go on to become one of League One's most prolific forwards.

jermaine-beckford

However, that all changed when he heard of Leeds' interest: "Leeds United? Seriously?’ I was on my way. It was a two-second decision. I felt really awkward because I’d told Boothroyd I would sign and he thought I was making a mistake. He told me I’d play more at Watford," he told The Athletic.

Even if they would find their way to the Premier League before he did, he explained his decision with immense passion and a love for the club that few players nowadays would understand:

"The thing is — and it’s hard to explain this unless you saw it through my eyes — but once I played for Leeds there was literally no other club in the world I’d have swapped them for. I embraced everything about it, the club, the city, the culture. I’d got a taste and you couldn’t tell me it was better elsewhere. I wasn’t listening.”

Having made his debut in the Championship, after a couple of loan spells, he returned ready for first-team action despite their relegation. The 2007/08 season would mark his breakthrough, as he started it in blistering fashion before finishing on 20 league goals for the year. However, it would not be enough for promotion.

The term following he would improve upon those numbers, but again his 27 goals in League One could not push them over the line and they remained in the division. He would even claim the league's Player of the Year award as if to exacerbate his failure to earn promotion.

It would certainly be third time lucky for Beckford though, who added some creativity to his game to forge seven assists alongside his 25 goals. They would go up in second under Simon Grayson's leadership, cementing the forward's status as a "legend" in the eyes of reporter Anthony Lewis and much of the fanbase. 2010 was at last a good year to be a Leeds fan.

However, despite finally triumphing after years of relentlessly pushing, this would mark the end of his journey with the club he had clearly fallen in love with.

The finances looked no better despite moving up a level, and it almost seemed like the club owed something to the six-cap ex-Jamaica international when they cancelled his contract to allow him to move to Everton.

He would never score with the same consistency that he did at Leeds, but it would have marked an impossible task to maintain such ludicrous numbers.

Beckford is still remembered with fondness today, even despite the stain that his transfer requests left at the time, as he was the man who stuck with them despite all their struggles. The free-scoring forward was not to bail out on his club despite their failure to achieve promotion, only leaving once he'd finished what he started.

Grayson owes plenty of his success to the heroic forward, and were he in Farke's team today, Piroe would certainly have to step aside to let the promotion king do what he does best.

'Now is my best time to contribute to the team' – Mushfiqur

Mushfiqur Rahim is as serious as they come, always focused on his cricket, so when he does something that is even remotely funny, it catches the interest of the Bangladesh public. That was the case when he pulled off the “cobra celebration” after sealing a record chase for Bangladesh with an unbeaten 72 off 35 balls in the Nidahas Trophy. After flicking a low full toss through midwicket to wrap up victory, Mushfiqur waved his bat in the air and did the snake dance, a celebration made popular by his team-mate Nazmul Islam. Was it a sign that his usually intense on-field demeanor is changing? Apparently not.”It was just a normal celebration,” Mushfiqur said. “Maybe everyone liked it. I don’t want to say much about it. [The celebration] wasn’t pre-planned. I think you can see in the celebration that we wanted the win badly.Deadpan response number two came when Mushfiqur was asked to turn his attention to the BCB president’s comments about his batting. On Sunday, Nazmul Hasan said he was shocked to see the batsman hitting massive sixes.”I think after this innings he [BCB president] will know that I can at least play that way,” Mushfiqur said. “I think he saw my game in a different way all this time. I think there’s a different feeling when all your hard work over months pays off in the middle. I don’t think he saw us in training, too, but we did the job in the middle.”I am not surprised [with my innings]. If you don’t have self-belief it becomes hard to deliver. To be honest, it is not good for me to be overjoyed after such an innings especially on that very good batting wicket. Someone had to play such a knock.”People often focus on the result; they don’t look at the hard work we put into training. We had a tough time off late but we believed in ourselves. But it is also true that when you get the result, it boosts the team.”Mushfiqur said he was keen to cash in on his experience – he is Bangladesh’s most capped T20I player – and contribute to the team with the bat.”I try very hard to give back to the Bangladesh team and cricket what experience I have earned playing for almost 13 years,” he said. “I think now is my best time to contribute to the team. I will try to be consistent as a top-order batsman.”I probably didn’t start T20s that well but now I want to correct my record in this format. I have a lot of other better innings in ODIs and Tests and I feel that I have the ability to play much better knocks in T20s.”Mushfiqur credited stand-in captain Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal for Bangladesh’s remarkable turnaround after the ODI and T20I series losses to Sri Lanka at home.”We had a brilliant chat as a whole group before the tournament,” he said. “We talked about regrouping, and that we have to do it; nobody will do it for us. We spoke about a lot of things that inspired us a lot, which is why I want to thank Tamim and Riyad [Mahmudullah] .

West Ham: Irons struck gold by selling star whose value rose by 708%

When West Ham United appointed David Moyes for a second spell in December 2019, it was met with mixed response from supporters, with some waxing over the suitability of a manager who knows the club and can orchestrate an exit from relegation danger, and others scratching their heads.

Many thought his arrival was somewhat regressive, a wariness in ambition and a failure to act with conviction and propel the club into the upper end of the Premier League.

He had previously led the Hammers for a short stint and departed upon the expiry of his contract after just six months in charge, but his return catalysed a club seeking a return to prominence, and he has now orchestrated illustrious success unseen in east London for many decades.

Indeed, after successfully preserving the Hammers' top-flight status with improved form in the latter phase of the 2019/20 campaign, Moyes has since led his team to successive European campaigns, making shrewd signings and developing a rock-solid collective understanding of the system and individual roles on the pitch.

Despite struggling in the Premier League last season, West Ham triumphed in the Europa Conference League and brought home the first slice of major silverware since 1980, when the club won the FA Cup.

And now, a successful summer transfer window has rekindled the verve in its entirety, with three wins from the opening five matches of the league season setting the club in good stead for a shot at landing a European spot once again.

That's despite the departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal in July, with the Irons' club-record sale, as formidable as he is, proving to have been a stunning piece of business after rising through the youth ranks.

When did West Ham sign Declan Rice?

At age 14, Rice was released from Chelsea's prestigious Cobham academy, and after a brief trial period with Fulham, it was West Ham who decided to nurture the precocious youngster's talents in 2013, guiding him through his formative years with a belief that he could one day break into the senior set-up.

And that he did. Rice signed his first professional contract at 16 years old and proclaimed himself a "leader", oozing age-belying confidence in his future at the highest level.

Big words? Maybe. But Rice was bang on the money and always knew that his blend of application and natural talent would serve him well as he ascended the ranks, and after making his competitive debut in May 2018 in an away win in the English top-flight over Burnley, handed by Moyes during the Scotsman's first stint at the outfit, interestingly, he swiftly asserted himself as one of English football's most promising talents.

Football Transfers has documented the player's meteoric rise over the years, with Rice quickly moving from an unknown commodity to a £13m-rated prodigy in 2020, having started all 38 fixtures across the 2019/20 league campaign and even captained the side on multiple occasions, still just a teenager.

How much is Declan Rice worth now?

Hailed a "force of nature" by journalist Rob Blanchette, the understanding of the calibre of midfielder that Moyes had on his hands was crystalising, and as his imperious performances showed no sign of waning, he started to attract attention from some of the juggernauts.

They all wanted a piece. Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all held a vested interest in 2021, and while West Ham held on to their man for as long as possible, it was actually Arsenal who convinced the player to make the cross-London move in July 2023, completing a British record £105m transfer, albeit this was trumped less than one month on as Chelsea signed Moises Caicedo for £115m.

This remarkable, lucrative departure for a player who had made 245 appearances and played a central role in an impressive rise to prominence must go down as a tremendous piece of business.

Having been rated at just £13m only three years before, Rice's value flew up by 708% over that period, and while it stings to see him ply his trade elsewhere, the summer acquisitions look to have been made with a clear vision, and West Ham have retained their overall quality as a club capable of competing for Europe domestically and for titles while on the continental stage itself.

Why is Declan Rice worth that much?

Interestingly praised as a “very good finisher” by former West Ham teammate Thomas Soucek, Rice boasts a multi-functional midfield skill set and one that prompted Arsenal to part with such a staggering sum of money for his services.

Indeed, Rice has only played five times in the Premier League for the Gunners but has already bagged his maiden goal at the most crucial of moments, bundling in from close range to give the Emirates Stadium side the lead in the dying embers of a thrilling 3-1 win against Manchester United.

To summarise his all-round skillset, as per FBref, the 45-cap England international ranks among the top 21% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 16% for pass completion, the top 17% for progressive passes, the top 14% for progressive carries and the top 6% for interceptions per 90.

The £240k-per-week phenom had also been previously heralded while on West Ham's books for his “monster” – as dubbed by ESPN’s David Cartlidge – presence in the centre, and without his rise to the fore under Moyes' wing, it's more than a little unlikely that the outfit's exploits over recent years would have been quite so emphatic.

kaelan-caesey-declan-rice-west-ham-opinion-premier-league

It's not long into life without Rice at West Ham, but the early signs hint at great promise for Moyes' outfit; while the Englishman was the fulcrum in the middle, immensely talented and all-encompassing, the moves made on the summer transfer market tantalises further riches for West Ham.

The club return to Europa League competition this week, and despite defeat against Pep Guardiola's City last time out, three wins and a draw from the opening five Premier League matches is as good a start as Irons fans could have hoped for.

Rice will eternally remain a beloved figure in east London, with his qualities integral to the illustrious success of recent years, and while his departure this summer was a poignant moment, the club hit the jackpot in cashing in for a staggering sum and effectively replacing him with a talented clutch of exciting new additions.

Smith, Lehmann culpable in Warner episode – Chappell

Ian Chappell is of the opinion that the Australian vice-captain is encouraged to engage in aggressive on-field behaviour by his captain and coach, who must also be punished

Australia’s captain Steven Smith and coach Darren Lehmann should be held accountable for encouraging David Warner’s aggressive on-field behaviour, former captain Ian Chappell has said.Smith, Lehmann and the Australian wicketkeeper Tim Paine emphatically defended Warner and the way the Australian team plays, insisting the vice-captain did not enter into personal sledging of Quinton de Kock before the South African responded with a disparaging comment about Warner’s wife. Chappell said a ban would be appropriate, not only for Warner but for his captain and coach.”A suspension would be appropriate because you need to stamp it out from the top down,” Chappell told Channel Nine. “But Warner gets the suspension, and while he’s responsible for his own actions and words, he’s being allowed to do it by people above him.”I’d like to see those above him suspended for sanctioning it. If you start taking strong action like that then you’ll get some sanity. It’s always the same – the players pay the penalty for the stupidity of those above. Warner is being encouraged to be the attack dog.”The laws of the game state the captain is responsible for the on-field actions of his players, so if Steve Smith is not stepping in he’s just as culpable.”Chappell said that administrators needed to act now to prevent the onset of violence on the field. “I’ve been saying for 15 years that there’ll be fisticuffs at some point, and it must have come close in that stairwell. It’s pretty obvious to me that the more you allow to be said on the field, the higher the chance that something personal will be said, and if it gets personal, you’ve got a situation on your hands.”How stupid is it, when I read before the Test that the Australians might bait Kagiso Rabada because he’s close to being suspended? Surely if you’re the officials and you see that, you call the coach and captain in the day before the game and explain it won’t be tolerated, and the first bloke who puts a foot out of line will be suspended.”I don’t want it to sound like nothing was said on the field when I played, because things were said. But it wasn’t premeditated. It wasn’t discussed in team meetings beforehand. Sometimes in the heat of the moment things were said.”I wouldn’t be trying to stop gamesmanship, because that’s an important part of the game of cricket, and it’s responsible for a lot of the humour in the game. But the inane chatter, abuse and comments trying to unsettle players, you don’t need it. Are you saying you don’t have enough faith in your bowlers to take 20 wickets?”

"I’m a big fan" – Sky pundit says West Ham 26 y/o "can step up" for Moyes

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has expressed his serious admiration for a West Ham United player who "can step up" for manager David Moyes.

Latest West Ham news

The Hammers' start to the new Premier League season has been a promising one overall, with West Ham currently sitting seventh after securing three wins, two losses and a draw. Both of Moyes' defeats have come at the hands of league high-flyers Man City and Liverpool, while impressive wins over Brighton, Chelsea and Luton showcase there is definitely something to work with.

This comes after a transfer window where West Ham brought in James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Mohammed Kudus, with two of the aforementioned already starting to justify their price tags in Claret and Blue. Ward-Prowse has been, arguably, one of the signings of the summer so far – bagging two goals and three assists in five league appearances.

West Ham United managerDavidMoyesbefore the match

The Irons are performing well in cup competitions, too, having sealed a 3-1 Europa League win over Backa Topola last week before booking their place in the EFL Cup Last 16 against Arsenal a few days ago. Losing superstar Declan Rice was seen as a big, big blow for Moyes, but the Scotsman has coped very well without the Englishman so far.

West Ham player ratings

While the likes of Ward-Prowse and Alvarez have starred as the new boys, there are other players who deserve just as much credit, as Sky pundit Merson says to Sportskeeda. The former Arsenal star says star in Moyes' squad "can step up" when required for Moyes.

England international winger Jarrod Bowen, according to Merson, is just a "manager's dream" as he gives a preview of West Ham's clash with Sheffield United today.

West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen.

"I see nothing but a West Ham win here," wrote Merson.

"Especially with players like Jarrod Bowen in fine form. I'm a big fan of him and he has shown over the past 12 months that he can step up to the plate in big games, while he works his socks off for his team and is an absolute manager's dream. The only issue for Bowen is that England have too many players in his position, so he might find it hard to break into the side ahead of Euro 2024."

The 26-year-old has come into a rich vein of form so far, chipping in with four goals and an assist, which has even prompted talk of a new and improved contract. Bowen didn't exactly enjoy his finest year at West Ham last campaign, but the winger has seemingly come into a new lease of life under Moyes so far.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is another figure to have praised Bowen, saying this on him in 2022:

“Bowen, what a player he became! Unbelievable. We saw him as well at Hull and he was really good at that time. I’m not sure a lot of people expected this jump, but unbelievable player.”
