Abbas had beaten Billings on numerous occasions before he found the edge of the Kent captain’s bat and Ned Eckersley held a outstanding low catch diving to his right behind the stumps.Zak Crawley went the same way, feathering a thin edge off Abbas to give Eckersley a more comfortable catch and reduce the visitors to 100 for 5, but Denly was joined by debutant Ollie Robinson in building a substantial partnership for the sixth wicket, helped by frontline seamers Abbas and Ben Raine coming to the end of their spells.Denly broke the shackles by hitting four boundaries in one over from Gavin Griffiths, bringing up his half-century with a fine straight drive to the rope off the same bowler, but Raine returned to the attack to pick up three quick wickets before lunch.Robinson, on the back foot, edged an outswinger to Eckersley, and in the same over Darren Stevens glanced down the leg-side only for Eckersley to pull off another brilliant catch flinging himself to his left. In the over before the break Denly, having battled his way to 62, missed a full inswinger from Raine and was plumb leg before wicket.Abbas returned after the break to bowl Harry Podmore off the inside edge before Grant Stewart was caught at cover driving.Kent picked up an early wicket of their own when Horton was leg before to a Stewart in-swinger, but Dearden in particular was batting positively, and he and Colin Ackermann added 69 for Leicestershire’s second wicket before Ackermann went leg before to a Thomas delivery that seamed back in.Mark Cosgrove, going through a bad patch by his high standards, nicked off to Thomas without scoring, and though Dearden passed 50, he lost two further partners, both to Thomas, as Ateeq Javid was caught down the legside by Billings and Eckersley fell leg before before rain and bad light saw play close 13 overs early.

England have won at the Pallekele International Stadium before, inspired by a Joe Root hundred, but it was also where the 2014 series slipped out of their reach, as Kumar Sangakkara basked in the adulation of his home crowd and set Sri Lanka up for a 4-2 lead with one to play. Crystal Palace have made a quietly impressive start to this term and could now have a second opportunity to bring in one of their key summer targets in the New Year, according to a new report.

Roy Hodgson's men have quietly gone about their business this campaign and find themselves 11th in the Premier League standings with 15 points from their opening 11 fixtures.

Last weekend, a comfortable 2-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor was enough to bring a run of three games without victory to an end, with goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Tyrick Mitchell ensuring that the three points would be heading back to south London with the Eagles.

Looking ahead, Crystal Palace face Everton at home on Saturday and could potentially move into the top half of the English top flight should results fall their way elsewhere. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Eagles boss Hodgson has urged his side to generate some crucial momentum by recording back-to-back victories by defeating the Toffees.

Hodgson stated to the club's official website: "Back-to-back wins in this league are really good, especially if you're not one of the teams right at the very top who expect back-to-back wins. We, who are not in that privileged position, we know if we can get back-to-back wins, those six points that the two wins give you, it really does make life so much more tranquil for a period of time and also boost confidence."

Of course, the 76-year-old has been boosted by some exciting news at Selhurst Park as one of his key men, Eberechi Eze, has put pen to paper on a new three-and-a-half-year deal at the club, ending heavy speculation over his future for the time being.

Hugo Ekitike set to be available in January

According to reports from France, via Sport Witness, Crystal Palace summer target Hugo Ekitike is biding his time as he seeks an exit from the Parc des Princes and is set to be on the market again in January following a series of failed moves during the last window.

The report states that the Eagles submitted a loan bid with an obligation to buy that was rejected by the Ligue 1 giants, despite the France Under-21 international being keen to move to Selhurst Park. Paris Saint-Germain then accepted offers from Adana Demirspor, Zenit St Petersburg and Eintracht Frankfurt for his services, with the former two being on a loan basis; however, Ekitike rebuffed their advances and remained in the French capital.

Enduring an underwhelming spell at Paris Saint-Germain, Ekitike, who has previously been labelled "special" by former boss Oscar Garcia, has made 33 appearances in all competitions for his current employers, registering four goals and four assists (Ekitike statistics – Transfermarkt).

Now, a move elsewhere could be in the offing for the striker and Crystal Palace may now look to bolster their forward ranks with the arrival of the former Reims loanee.

It was India v Australia in Indore, and Sachin Tendulkar, in his 259th innings, was on the verge of going where no man had ever ventured.With the score at 77 for 1 and Shane Warne bowling his rippers in Indore, Tendulkar nonchalantly caressed a drive to long-off in the 18th over to collect his 10,000th ODI run. The great man had finally broken his generation’s golden number, and with that created a new yardstick in ODI cricket.Virat Kohli has 9,919 runs in 204 innings. He is on the brink of absolutely pulverising Tendulkar’s record of fastest to five digits. He toyed with the West Indies attack in the first ODI, scoring a 107-ball 140 and there’s no reason why he can’t repeat the performance in the second game as well.Devendra Bishoo and, in particular, Ashley Nurse, don’t look like wicket-takers when India are on defence. And when India are on the attack – then well, the economies of 7.2 and 9 in the first ODI paint a fairly accurate picture. Unlike Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav or Ravindra Jadeja, who provide control, guile and dot balls in the middle overs, Bishoo and Nurse were milked for runs quite comfortably.Question marks also hover around West Indies’ batting. Yes, they did score 322 in Guwahati, but their batting performance wasn’t optimal. Kieran Powell has a List-A strike rate of 77 since 2013 and Shai Hope’s career List-A strike-rate is under 70. On flat pitches, those numbers will hurt West Indies’ eventual total, irrespective of the solidity they bring at the top. With Shimron Hetmyer, fresh off a century, and Marlon Samuels possessing the ability to keep the run-rate ticking, they could perhaps look to rejig the batting order in a bid to post totals that would actually make India work harder. They are capable of it – with Rovman Powell and Holder to cap their innings off – but they need their top order to do more.And as for India, they will want a solution, once and for all, to the No. 4 to No. 6 conundrum. Liverpool are showing genuine interest in completing the signing of a player dubbed the "most underrated player in the Premier League", according to a fresh transfer update this week.

The Reds have looked like a completely different side to the one that toiled so badly last season, enjoying a promising start to the 2023/24 campaign. The 1-1 draw away to Manchester City was proof that Liverpool are in the mix in the Premier League title race, with new midfielders such as Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch making a noticeable difference.

This still isn't the near-perfect squad that Jurgen Klopp assembled a few years ago, however, with further additions needed to make it truly formidable, whether that be an out-and-out defensive midfielder, another centre-back option or a right-back deputy to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram has again emerged as a Liverpool target, according to a recent report, so it certainly seems as though Klopp may not be done with strengthening his choices in the middle of the park.

According to a new update from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, but are not alone in showing an admiration for him.

"Aston Villa’s intentions to hold on to Douglas Luiz will be tested by interest from all of their top four rivals – Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool, TEAMtalk has learned.

"Luiz has been an outstanding performer for Villa this season as Unai Emery’s side have forced themselves into the traditional Champions League places.TEAMtalk has learned that the three clubs above them – Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool – all hold genuine levels of interest in the central midfielder. Whilst Villa’s stance is that he is not for sale, their resistance is going to be tested by the time we get to the summer window."

Luiz could be an exceptional signing by Liverpool, with the Brazilian proving to be a huge reason for Villa's outstanding season to date, as they sit fourth in the Premier League table currently. In fact, Luiz's statistics this year are way up – he has scored five goals and chipped in with two assists in 13 league appearances in 2023/24, as well as enjoying an 88.8% pass completion rate and averaging 2.3 tackles per game in the competition.

The 25-year-old has earned massive praise from Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson in recent times, too, with the Arsenal legend saying of him:

"Douglas Luiz is the most underrated player in the Premier League. No-one talks about him. He turns up for Aston Villa week in, week out. He's box to box, he scores goals and passes the ball extremely well. He's just a very good player."
