Chelsea now "vying" to sign World Cup winner they think is "perfect"

Chelsea, led by chairman Todd Boehly, are now "vying" to sign a World Cup-winning star in the January transfer window.

The high-profile stars linked with Chelsea

Boehly, assisted by co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, is reportedly turning his attention to the winter market after splashing out close to £400 million on new signings in the summer.

Chelsea are currently mid-table and on a fairly inconsistent run of form, having picked up impressive results against the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Man City only to be humbled by Man United, Brentford and Newcastle.

Important Chelsea chief now really wants to sign similar star to Nkunku

There is a real need for him.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 7, 2023

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has a very large squad of stars to pick from and you could argue it is a real challenge for the Argentine to gel them together in perfect unison.

Despite this, there are still some areas which could use improvement – namely at centre-back and going forward. Thiago Silva could leave at the end of this Premier League season, prompting reports that Chelsea are interested in Jonathan Tah of Bayer Leverkusen as one option to replace the Brazilian.

Jonathan Tah

Meanwhile, in terms of strikers, a big name linked with moving to Stamford Bridge is Napoli star Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian is rumoured to be a top target for Boehly and Pochettino, with Osimhen emerging as a key Chelsea transfer target.

The Blues have also gathered quite a reputation for buying young stars since Clearlake Capital's acquisition, and there is another who Chelsea are pretty fond of.

Chelsea "vying" to sign Almada

According to reports out of Spain, Chelsea are vying to sign Atlanta United star Thiago Almada in January. The Argentine, who was a member of his nation's World Cup-winning squad last year, is attracting serious interest from Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle United as the English quartet all chase his signature.

Chelsea view Almada as a player who's "perfect" for their long-term project. The 22-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season in the MLS this year, scoring a brilliant 13 goals and assisting 16 others to boot.

"Thiago’s talent is incredible, it's amazing," teammate Giorgos Giakoumakis said (via 90min).

"His ability, his vision is amazing. It's all about his ambition and where he wants to end up. If he wants to make the next step, it will be up to him. If not, he will be one of our leaders in Atlanta and I'm really happy I've shared the field with him."

Almada's next move will be an intriguing development to follow as he looks to be one of the most promising young players out of Argentina right now.

In a possible boost for Chelsea, Almada has made it clear he wants to go to Europe, namedropping the Premier League as one of his preferred landing spots.

“I want to leave, I want to go play in Europe. I feel like leaving now,” he said to ESPN (via AS).

"If I have to choose, I would like to play the Premier League or the Spanish league, but either."

Bowlers are much fitter than the last time we came here – Kohli

The India captain wants his team to adapt to conditions quicker than they have done on their previous tours abroad

Sidharth Monga in Adelaide05-Dec-20180:55

Don’t think any Australian side vulnerable at home – Kohli

For the first time, perhaps, India have come to Australia with their bowlers in collective good form. data says only four sides have travelled to Australia with better collective bowling averages in the two years leading up to an Australia tour. No Indian side has done better in the lead-up period. Add to it the fact that Australia are missing Steven Smith and David Warner, and it is hard to not see why India are relaxed and positive about their chances. Then again, less recent history is not kind to these Indian bowlers. Two of the bowlers to play in Adelaide are among the three worst specialist bowlers to have sent down 2000 balls in Australia. Other bowlers have unflattering records, too. Asked how he felt about his bowlers a day before the first Test, Virat Kohli exuded optimism, saying the bowlers felt at the peak of their game and didn’t really need a certain set of conditions to be able to perform well.”I think it’s pretty different from what we had when we came here last time,” Kohli said. “They are more experienced, and the guys are way fitter than they were when they came here last time. I think the key in Australia is to keep bowling in the right areas for longer periods of time. The conditions also become hard because it can get really hot and the pitches can be flat purely because of the Kookaburra not doing much after 20-odd overs till it reverses around 45-50 (overs). That middle phase is very crucial.”We have identified those things and the guys themselves feel that they are at the peak of their skill level at the moment. They are looking forward to this challenge, they don’t want to be in a situation where we are looking for ideal bowling conditions or ideal batting conditions. So the bowlers are in a mindset that whatever the situation might be, or however hard it might be, they are looking forward to performing in those conditions and doing what the team wants at the end of the day.”No one is going out there gunning for a six-wicket haul for himself. If it means bowling eight good overs in a spot and getting a wicket for the team, they are ready to that. So I think that mindset is very crucial and that feedback is coming from the bowlers themselves. It’s not been told to them; they only are talking about it, which I think is a very positive sign.”Getty Images

There is one missing link, though. This is the one tour where India needed Hardik Pandya to help the specialist bowlers out. The heat, the flat pitches, the Kookaburra, the soft outfields, all take a toll on the bowlers. This is only the second time since Kohli took over captaincy full time, and first time away from home, that India are starting a series with just four bowlers in their XI. It is not a change of minds, but a decision forced on them.”It obviously has an impact,” Kohli said of the absence of the allrounder. “I mean every side would like to have a fast-bowling allrounder, which we don’t have right now with Hardik injured. That obviously is a great luxury to have for any side. We don’t, so we have to go with the best possible combination. Again, the workload on guys who will play in the absence of an allrounder will be high, but that’s something that has already been discussed. They should look forward to that and not think of it as a burden, or something which is going to be tough. Because at the international level, things are tough.”So, we will just have to embrace that and make something out of the resources that we have at present and try to put in the performances that the team expects from the players. Losing Hardik is obviously a bit of an issue, (but) I don’t see it as a major one because in Australia you still have to bowl really well even if you are an allrounder. To contain the batsmen is always a challenge.”Another issue for India away has been that they have been slow starters. That is something Kohli has taken note of, and wants his side to play fearlessly. “We are not looking to start tentatively,” Kohli said. “We all want to express ourselves, go out there and be positive. Not meaning that we are going to play rash shots and we are going to be all over the place with the ball, but it’s just in our heads wanting to bring our A game in the first match itself, and then try and lay a good foundation for us and capitalise on that as the series goes on.”We don’t want to wait to figure out what the condition of the pitch is going to be, we have got to read it really early and alter our games accordingly, which I think we failed to do in the last tours. When we have done it, we have won games but we will have to do it for longer periods to be able to win series, which is our goal. We don’t want to be a side that plays exciting cricket for one Test match. We want to be a consistent side and for that, we need to adapt quicker than we have in the past.”

Ben Stokes and Alex Hales cleared for West Indies tour after CDC verdict

Ben Stokes and Alex Hales will both be available for selection for the full itinerary of England’s tour of the Caribbean

Ben Stokes and Alex Hales will both be available for selection for the full itinerary of England’s tour of the Caribbean in the New Year, after the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) concluded their inquiry into the events in Bristol in September 2017.Stokes was handed a £30,000 fine and an eight-match ban, although having missed two ODIs against West Indies in addition to the Australia leg of last winter’s tours, it was deemed that he has already missed the sufficient amount of games.Hales was handed a £17,500 fine, with £10,000 suspended as well as a six-match ban, four of which are suspended for 12 months. Both players and the ECB have accepted the verdicts – the CDC is funded by the ECB but claims to run as an independent organisation – which means there will be no appeals. As a result, a saga that had hung over England cricket for more than 15 months is finally over.Indeed, both players pleaded guilty to the charges and have released statements expressing remorse. In his statement, Stokes for the first time apologised “to England supporters and to the public for bringing the game into disrepute.””Everyone will now be aware that the CDC disciplinary proceedings have now concluded and I accept the decision of the Panel,” said Stokes. “I had entered guilty pleas to bringing the game into disrepute much earlier in the process and I want to thank the panel for their time and consideration now that the hearing has ended.”The criminal charges and, subsequently, the disciplinary charges have made it difficult to make public comment about the issues. I have already apologised to my team mates, coaches and support staff for the consequences of my actions in Bristol. I regret that the incident ever happened and I apologise to England supporters and to the public for bringing the game into disrepute. I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me through this process.”Cricket and family are my life. This incident has been a huge burden for the last 15 months. I am relieved to get back to playing the game that I love without this hanging over me. Although the disciplinary process is now over, I have learned lessons that will stay with me for much longer.”Both players were charged with two counts of bringing the game into disrepute. The first related to events outside a Bristol bar in September 2017 and involved staying out too late and drinking too much alcohol midway through an ODI series. The pair also subsequently became embroiled in a fight, though a court cleared Stokes of the charge of affray while Hales was not arrested. The CDC imposed a ban from playing for England for six matches and a fine of £15,000 upon Stokes for that charge – they accepted he had already missed those matches – and a ban of four white-ball matches (two of which were served and two of which are suspended for 12-months) and fine of £7,500 (of which £4,500 is suspended for 12-months) upon Hales. The second charge related to “inappropriate images” in the case of Hales and “inappropriate video” in the case of Stokes. In Hales’ case that relates to Snapchat images that appeared to show him in a state of undress, while in Stokes’ it was a video that appeared to show him mimicking Katie Price’s disabled son, Harvey. The CDC imposed a ban from playing for England for two matches and a fine of £15,000 (to be paid to charity) upon Stokes for that charge – they accepted he had already missed those matches – and a ban of two white-ball matches (suspended for 12 months) and fine of £10,000 (of which £5,500 is suspended for 12 months) upon Hales.Hales is also required to undertake, at his own cost, “appropriate training, as agreed and approved by the ECB” within three months. He joined Stokes in offering an apology.”I am relieved today’s decision by the CDC means this chapter is now closed and I can move on with my career,” Hales said in a statement.”There is no doubt I fell below the high standards expected of an international sportsman and that was the reason for my decision to admit the charges and accept the punishment handed down. More than anything, I sincerely apologise for putting myself in a position which allowed these very regrettable incidents to happen.””Today is a very strong reminder of the values that sit at the heart of our game and the standards that should always be expected,” Tom Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of the ECB, said.”We accept the decisions made by the Cricket Discipline Commission and the sanctions they have given to Alex Hales and Ben Stokes.”Each pleaded guilty, admitted their charges and has accepted their sanctions. They will now be available to play for England, with the same support as all of our players.”The news will be a relief to the England team management and selectors. The squads for the Caribbean tour are named on Monday and news that Stokes, in particular, is free to play a full part in the tour will be a significant boost. The cynics, however, will note the convenience of the penalties and wonder at the independence of the CDC.Either way, an incident that has dogged England cricket for many months and threatened to derail the careers of one of the most promising cricketers of his generation is now over.

Lange "ready" to move for "very strong" new Spurs centre-back target

Tottenham are ready to rival a top club and sign an exciting new centre-back who's even been likened to Arsenal star William Saliba.

Lange chases new Spurs defender

After recruitment meetings in the last week, new sporting director Johan Lange has reportedly identified a left-sided defender as one of Tottenham's main priorities for the January window.

This comes after centre-back Micky van de Ven sustained a hamstring injury in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea earlier this month, with defensive partner Cristian Romero also suspended right now. Ange Postecoglou has been forced to play both Ben Davies and Emerson Royal as the centre-back pairing most recently, with Spurs' head coach seemingly not having any faith in Eric Dier.

Tottenham have been linked with the likes of Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly and Crystal Palace Marc Guehi, while other options are finding their way on to Spurs' list of January targets fairly regularly.

Centre-back is a position Spurs quite simply need to reinforce, with former defender Alan Hutton backing them to make a "top signing" in the winter window recently.

“It’ll be very interesting to see who they bring in, and I think it will happen, a top signing, for sure," said Hutton to Football Insider in mid-Novemberm, commenting on Tottenham's links to Kelly.

"They do need defensive reinforcements as we’ve seen after a number of injuries. They look thin at the back so it’s something they will look at. Kelly’s got lots of experience in the Premier League.

“He’s a good size, good with his feet and ticks a lot of boxes. He’s somebody they’ll have an eye on but I’m sure there’ll be lots of players that are working hard in the background to see if they can make the squad better.”

Spurs eyeing Jean-Clair Todibo

Now, according to The Evening Standard and journalist Nizaar Kinsella, Tottenham are "ready to rival" Liverpool in the race to sign Jean-Clair Todibo.

Indeed, Spurs have joined the race for Todibo as they prepare to sign another defender in January. He'll apparently cost around £39 million to prise away from current club Nice, where he has seriously impressed in Ligue 1.

Nice defenderJean-Clair Todibo.

The France international is apparently keen on a move to the Premier League as well, with Man United also in the hunt for his signature amid their desperation for another centre-back.

Todibo, interestingly, has been likened to Arsenal star Saliba in playing style by Football Transfers, while former Bayern Munich defender and Brazil star Dante called him a "very strong" player.

“Of course, we would like Todibo to stay," said Dante when speaking in a recent press conference (via Football Transfers).

"But it can be complicated. We have to wait to see who will want to buy him and if everyone finds himself there. He is a leader, a very strong player mentally, he has improved a lot and he is ready to reach the very top level."

Still just 23-year-old, Todibo would have many years to justify his price tag at Spurs, but it remains to be seen whether he'd be willing to compete with van de Ven or Romero as the starting centre-back.

Escalação do São Paulo: Luciano treina e deve voltar contra o Inter

Kohli's India script historic series win in Australia

Thin drizzle rendered play impossible on the final day as India secured first-ever Test series win in Australia

The Report by Shashank Kishore06-Jan-20195:49

Pujara, Bumrah and beyond: Five reasons India beat Australia

Seventy-one years after they first toured Australia, India finally have a series win to show. While it wasn’t quite the grandstand 3-1 finish they would have envisaged, it was a series win well deserved as they became the first Asian side to win a Test series in Australia.History was celebrated with handshakes at little after 2.30pm on a bleak day where play didn’t look possible at any stage. This meant they weren’t able to add to the four overs out of the potential 155 they had at Australia to try to get the ten remaining wickets to secure a third win, after enforcing the follow-on with a 322-run lead that was achieved early on the fourth day. Incidentally, Sunday too dawned dark and grey with only 25.2 overs possible. The situation at times on the final day bordered on the farcical. As the floodlights took effect, Sydney’s Central Business Districts were visible through the thin spray of pitter-patter but the umpires were bound by the rigid ICC guidelines. The rain may have not been intense enough for the players to go off in the first place. However, with the rules stipulating players can only return once the drizzle stops and light improves to a reading better than the one that forced them off, any hope of play diminished drastically.Where they should have been out looking to take wickets, the Indian team spent their morning doing photoshoots and some tour filming; not quite the expected end to an intense series where each Test was pushed into the fifth day. The series win meant India became the fifth side after England, West Indies, New Zealand and South Africa to record a Test series win in Australia.”Hats off to India. When we play in India, we know how difficult it is, so to win in foreign conditions is a huge effort, congratulations to Virat, Ravi and those guys,” said Australia captain Tim Paine. “In the last two Tests, we were a little poor. We thought we had chances to win in Adelaide, but India outplayed us in big moments. In Perth, we played a good brand of cricket, but were completely outplayed in Melbourne and Sydney. India deserved to win.”Out of the 13 captains to have led India on these shores, Virat Kohli’s two wins on this tour is the joint-most along with Bishan Bedi. This completes a circle of sorts for India, who began their long stretch of overseas tours in January last year with a 2-1 series loss in South Africa. With a slew of home Tests – outside of the one tour to the Caribbean in July – in the next 12 months, India have a great chance of extending their reign as the No. 1-ranked Test side. For Kohli and India, this Test series will be extra special, for they found the batting support that their bowlers missed in South Africa and during their 4-1 loss in England.”I’ve never been more proud to be part of a team than this one right here,” said Kohli. “I think the culture we have been able to build over the last 12 months [has been fantastic]. I’m proud to be part of this team. To lead these players is an honour and privilege. They make a captain look good.”Kohli, remarkably, was only the third among all batsmen in the series – Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant finished ahead of him with 521 and 350 runs respectively. In comparison to the 2014-15 tour, where he scored 692 runs, Kohli’s tally of 282 seemed pale, but his century in Perth on a fiery track – albeit in a losing cause – was an act for the most top batsmen to emulate. In the end, the series scoreline was 2-1, with Australia’s Perth win sandwiched between India’s triumphs in Adelaide and Melbourne. Both sides will now square off in three ODIs to round-off a tour that began with the T20I series locked 1-1, with the second T20I in Melbourne ending in no result because of rain.
