Australia’s Ashes squad members Matthew Wade, James Pattinson, Travis Head and Usman Khawaja are set to return for their states in the Marsh Cup this weekend after being rested from the first week of fixtures, but New South Wales’ Test stars will not feature against Western Australia.Steven Smith, David Warner, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will all continue to rest despite the Blues being desperate for a win after losses to Queensland and South Australia in Brisbane.Western Australia have named an unchanged side to take on NSW in two matches at Drummoyne Oval after obliterating Victoria and Tasmania in their first two matches at home.Wade will return to captain and keep wicket for the winless Tasmania while South Australia will regain their captain Head for the two matches against the Tigers at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide. Incredibly, it has been seven seasons since South Australia have hosted a domestic one-day fixture after the competition was revamped in 2013.Victoria have added paceman Pattinson to their 14-man squad for the two matches against Queensland at Junction Oval in Melbourne.Khawaja will return to lead the undefeated Bulls after being rested from their first two home wins against New South Wales and South Australia. Ben Cutting has also been added to the Bulls’ squad after being left out of the first two games. He replaces Jack Wildermuth, who suffered a hamstring injury after his Player of the Match performance against New South Wales.

Spurs may already have a "monster" Van de Ven heir out on loan

When James Maddison and Micky van de Ven both recovered from injuries in January, many expected Tottenham Hotspur to return to the fluency that had seen them dazzle throughout the opening phase of the campaign.

This form had resulted in a hat-trick of Premier League Manager of the Month awards to kick off Ange Postecoglou's tenure, appointed from Celtic last summer after Spurs' abject 2022/23 season culminated in an eighth-placed finish and Harry Kane's sale to Bayern Munich.

But a spate of injuries and suspensions several months into the season resulted in a torrid run of form throughout November and December, and while results have picked up more recently, Tottenham's 4-0 drubbing over Aston Villa at the weekend finally marked a return to that early-season style.

Last year, Antonio Conte's management at Tottenham bred only hostility and disconnect. Where was the identity? Had the squad's unity and cohesion got lost in the ether?

Contrarily, straight-talking Postecoglou has pumped an entertaining and attractive style of play back into the stadium but he's also revived the single most important part of a football team: belief.

At the heart of the success, Van de Ven has been a revelation in the backline and he might just be one of the most transformative additions in many years.

How Micky van de Ven has performed for Spurs

Arriving from German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg for £43m – beating Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp's side opted not to splash such a sum on the rising star – Van de Ven has formed a rock-solid partnership with Cristian Romero and put last season's dismal defensive displays in distant memory.

Described as an "elite baller" by journalist Mitch Fretton, Van de Ven has certainly been an impressive figure in the Premier League, with FBref ranking him among the top 3% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 1% for successful take-ons and the top 16% for progressive carries per 90.

Micky van de Ven performing for Tottenham.

Such metrics highlight the 6 foot 4 titan's athletic and singular ability in the central defence, endowed with blistering pace and formidable strength to close down and swat aside hopeful forwards.

The £50k-per-week Dutchman is also one of Tottenham's most composed and technically crisp players, completing 95% of his passes across 18 Premier League outings, winning 66% of his ground duels, succeeding with 61% of his dribbles and notably averaging 5.8 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.

However, the 22-year-old has been unfortunate to have missed a large chunk of the season with injury and after falling against Aston Villa on Sunday, there is fresh fear that he is set for a spell on the sidelines once again.

Postecoglou did downplay concerns that his dynamic ace is facing an extended layoff, though until an official prognosis is confirmed any discourse is purely conjecture.

Radu Dragusin was signed from Genoa for £27m back in January to combat Spurs' thinness in defence – with both Van de Ven and Romero missing action concurrently this term and Eric Dier unfavoured, a makeshift back four had been cobbled together – but he had been limited to cameos of few minutes before he was called into play for the majority of the second half at Villa Park.

The Romania international, aged 22, is aggressive and tenacious but isn't the only centre-half with sights set on a starring role under Postecoglou in the months to come, with teenager Ashley Phillips possibly boasting qualities that make him the perfect fit for the Australian's tactical set-up.

Why Spurs signed Ashley Phillips

Phillips had caught the eye with Blackburn Rovers last season despite his youth and had chalked up eight league appearances, with Tottenham acting swiftly to beat any competition down the line and landing him for an astute £2m fee back in August.

Tony Mowbray, who managed Phillips at Blackburn, has waxed lyrical about his potential and offered some praise that springs a certain Netherlands international to mind.

He said: "He’s an amazing footballer and he is going to be a mega footballer I’m pretty sure, but he’s a very young boy. He’s a 6’3, 6’4 magnificent cut of a guy, fast as lightning, composed with the ball, aggressive."

Former Blackburn Rovers centre-back Ashley Phillips.

Such traits paint quite the picture and given that Phillips is only 18 years old, it makes for exciting reading as he continues his development on loan in the Championship with Plymouth Argyle.

More importantly, perhaps, it suggests that Phillips could be a defender of a complete skill set, with pace to rival Van de Ven and a combative approach to mirror Romero – and Dragusin, on that note.

It will take a bit of time to shape Phillips into a player capable of performing at a high quality for Tottenham, but the innate ability is definitely there and the decision to ship him out on loan to the Championship was a prudent one.

Spurs insider Jon Wenham has hailed Phillips as a "monster" and while he is young, he will have been told to bide his time and nurture his craft over the coming years – in other words, the talented teenager will enjoy some loan stints until he is deemed ready for a regular role in Postecoglou's first-team.

That said, he's proving himself a worthy starter in tough conditions at Plymouth, who are struggling in the second tier and face a daunting closing period of the campaign as they look to secure survival. Phillips really is the real deal and his signing highlights the new chapter at Tottenham that is found to breed success.

Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Virender Sehwag and Muttiah Muralitharan are among the big names set to feature in a T20 tournament aimed at promoting road safety, called the Road Safety World Series. Some other prominent names that are set to be part of the tournament are Jacques Kallis, Brett Lee and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.ESPNcricinfo understands the first season of the tournament will be played in 2020 between February 2 and 16 in Mumbai and will feature the following teams: India Legends, Australia Legends, South Africa Legends, Sri Lanka Legends and West Indies Legends. It is understood that a total of 110 players – all retired – have confirmed their participation in the tournament, which would be based on the franchise model prevailing across domestic T20 leagues around the world. The participating teams have been restricted to only Test-playing countries for the first season.Among the organisers promoting this event are Professional Management Group and the Road Safety Cell of the Maharashtra government. Part of their business plan is to host the event for ten years across India. It is understood that the organisers had received the nod from BCCI in August 2018 to conduct the tournament.Although the players’ payments would be taken care of by the franchises, the proceeds from the tournament itself would be utilised by the Road Safety Cell to promote the cause in addition to highlighting how India ranks the highest in the world in terms of deaths caused on roads.Tendulkar will be returning to play cricket in front of a crowd for the third time since his retirement in 2013, having played for the MCC against Rest of the World XI at Lord’s in 2014 and three exhibition T20s in the USA in 2015.

Arsenal have eyes on Victor Osimhen alternative as far cheaper fee revealed

Arsenal have eyes on an "interesting" Victor Osimhen alternative who could be signed for a "significantly cheaper" fee this summer, according to reports.

Edu eyeing new striker for Arsenal this summer

The Gunners' imperious run of goal-scoring form has been a real talking point since the beginning of 2024, with Mikel Arteta's side scoring 33 goals in their last eight Premier League matches.

Arsenal in "constant" talks with star, ready to offer him £200,000-per-week

The Gunners aren’t messing around here.

Regardless of their attacking form, or the resurgence of summer signing Kai Havertz going forward, it remains the case that sporting director Edu and the Arsenal board are keen to bring in a new number nine.

Edu will know exactly the type of striker who he wants through the door, and as he's previously explained, Arsenal are putting particular emphasis on younger players with bright futures.

"We already have our targets,” said the Brazilian (via TNT Sports).

“We have planned a lot ahead and I will be worried if we don’t score a lot of goals and if we’re not creating chances, which is the opposite because we create a lot and score a lot of goals. Many times in certain conversations to recruit the players you don't see the character of the player or the character of the player does not fit well with what we are trying to do and then you have to move on and try to find what we’re really looking for. If you see all the signings we’ve made since we started together, everyone is almost the same, young, energetic and passionate, and good talents with big, beautiful futures ahead of them.”

A striker who seriously fits that mould is Napoli star Osimhen. Not only has the 25-year-old been one of Serie A's most prolific marksmen of the past few years, but he's also got a fair few years ahead of him.

The only issue for Edu and co is that they will most likely have to the Nigerian's £115 million release clause and contend with a number of high-profile clubs to sign him this summer. Arsenal are said to be in "constant communcation" with Osimhen's camp ahead of this summer, but they do have alternative options they're scouting.

Arsenal have eyes on "significantly cheaper" Sesko

As per Ben Jacobs, speaking to GiveMeSport, Arsenal have been scouting RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko as a "significantly cheaper" option over Osimhen.

"I think it's true that Arsenal have scouted Gyokeres and Sesko," said Jacobs.

Benjamin Sesko

"I think that Sesko is an interesting one, potentially for Arsenal but also for Chelsea and PSG, and his release clause at €50m (£43m) is naturally significantly cheaper than Victor Osimhen for example."

The 20-year-old has bagged seven goals and a further two assists in the Bundesliga this term, but could only get better given his tender age, making this one to watch.

Newcastle made mistake signing flop who’s now worth 31x less than Miley

It's safe to say, that before the takeover by the Saudi PIF, Newcastle United made some bizarre signings, with many of the arrivals failing to make an impact at St James' Park.

Joselu, Jack Colback and Matz Sels all arrived on Tyneside during the darker years for the Magpies, with the trio failing to add anything to the squad – with Colback in particular subject to scrutiny after joining the club from arch-rivals Sunderland.

The midfielder went on to make over 100 appearances for the Magpies, with Joselu and Sels finding game time harder to come by. None of the aforementioned players remain at St James', with the club doing a good job of clearing the deadwood in recent years.

However, one signing made by Steve Bruce is somehow still on the books with the club needing to brutally part ways with him this summer after a horrid time in recent seasons.

Jeff Hendrick's stats at Newcastle United

After joining on a free transfer during the summer of 2020, midfielder Jeff Hendrick raised some eyebrows with the former Burnley man a surprise signing, to say the least.

The Republic of Ireland international penned a four-year deal on Tyneside, in a move that would be an absolute disaster for the player and the club.

However, he looked to be an astute piece of business after scoring and assisting on his debut in the 2-0 win against West Ham United, but that would be as good as it got for the former Derby County talent.

Hendrick would make 22 Premier League appearances in his first campaign for the Magpies, before rapidly falling down the pecking order after the takeover.

He would only make three league appearances during the first half of the 2021/22 season, before being shipped out on loan to Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.

West Brom target Jeff Hendrick in action for Reading.

After failing to make an impact at Loftus Road, he's rapidly declined, suffering relegation to League One with Reading last season, before being excluded from Sheffield Wednesday's 27-man squad and not featuring for the Owls since the 2nd of December, before being re-added ahead of their final eight Championship games.

Jeff Hendrick's market value in 2024

Although he joined Bruce's side as a free agent, the 32-year-old had a market value of around £7.6m when he arrived at St James', with his value significantly dropping over the past couple of years.

His rapid decline has seen his value drop 92% in just under four years, with Hendrick now worth 31x less than current Newcastle star Lewis Miley, with the 17-year-old currently worth £18.8m – as per Transfermarkt.

Hendrick also earns a staggering £40k-per-week, with the midfielder bleeding the club dry having earned over £4m since he last played a game for the Magpies.

With his contract expiring this summer, it's about time the club parted ways with the 32-year-old with both parties needing to forget about what has been a complete disaster.

A virada
