Arteta must axe Arsenal flop who is now worth 9x less than Ben White

It's been a long road to bring Arsenal back to the precipice of Premier League glory for Mikel Arteta, and while he's generally got transfers right in his time, there have certainly been some duds along the way.

The Spaniard has brought in brilliant players like Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and Kai Havertz, but he has also signed the likes of Pablo Mari, Willian, and Runar Alex Runarsson.

That said, most of his lacklustre purchases have been sold on or released to free up space for better players to come in, apart from one early signing now worth nine times less than Ben White.

Cédric Soares Arsenal career

As one of Arteta's first signings, Cédric Soares moved to Arsenal on a six-month loan deal from Southampton in January 2020 before joining the Gunners on a permanent deal in August of the same year alongside fellow January loanee, Mari.

Due to a severe knee injury, the then-28-year-old only made five appearances for the north Londoners in his loan spell, in which he scored one goal. However, in his first full season at the club, he would go on to play a more significant role, making 24 appearances, although he couldn't nail down the position.

It was a similar story the following season. Despite making 26 appearances, the former Saints ace still found himself spending a lot of time on the bench, although considering that his performance against Liverpool in April of that season left Arsenal great Tony Adams feeling "scared," it was probably for the best.

With the writing clearly on the wall, the Portuguese full-back joined Fulham on loan for the latter half of last season. This term, he has been limited to just five appearances and hasn't even made the matchday squad on multiple occasions.

So, with a rather underwhelming body of work at the club and no path back into the first team, it's not surprising that his valuation is so low.

This dreadful valuation means he is the least valuable full-back at the club today.

As if that wasn't bad enough, he's priced around nine times cheaper than White, whom the CIES has priced at €40m or £34m.

It's a combination of his contract expiring this summer and a lack of game time that has led to the 32-year-old's woeful new price, while the Englishman's increasing importance to Arteta's system and brilliant performance this season is behind his ballooning worth.

For example, in his 50 appearances this season, the Poole-born "warrior", as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored four goals and provided five assists on top of his defensive duties, which have helped the Gunners create the best defensive record in the Premier League this season.

Moreover, while his right-back brother-in-arms has just a few months remaining on his contract, the former Brighton & Hove Albion man has just signed a new deal that has seen his wages rise to £150k-per-week and sees him tied to the club until 2028.

Ultimately, it's probably a good thing for all parties involved that Cédric's deal is set to expire in the summer. While he's a model professional, he hasn't succeeded at the club in any meaningful way, so with his valuation about as low as it could be, it's time he sailed off into the sunset come the end of June.

Cricket South Africa's 3TC competition rescheduled to July 18

The experimental format – featuring three teams in one game – will mark the return of cricket to the country in lockdown

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jul-20203:55

What exactly is the 3TC?

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has rescheduled the experimental 3TeamCricket (3TC) competition, which will flag off the resumption of cricket in the country, to July 18 – also celebrated as Nelson Mandela International Day.Three teams – led by Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers – will all compete simultaneously in the same match for the Solidarity Cup at SuperSport Park in Centurion, with the game televised live. The line-ups and playing conditions remain unaltered. The announcement comes a day after the country’s sport ministry approved CSA’s plans of having the country’s national men’s and women’s team back in training.ALSO READ: Experimental 3TC format to kick off South Africa’s return to cricket”It’s very exciting to get live cricket, featuring our top players, back on our TV screens again,” CSA’s acting chief executive Jacques Faul said. “I can’t think of a more appropriate day on which to hold this game than Nelson Mandela Day, when its prime objective is to raise funds for those who have been badly affected by the coronavirus. It is still nearly three weeks away, so it also gives our players more time to prepare properly and to minimise the chance of injuries.”I would like to thank the government and our own medical team once again for everything they have done to make a return to training and playing possible. I would also like to add special thanks to the incredible sponsors involved in this event for their continued commitment towards the match and its beneficiary, the Hardship Fund.”The match was earlier supposed to take place on June 27 but had to be postponed as CSA hadn’t received government clearance for resumption of sporting activities. There has been no cricket in South Africa since the group stage of the domestic one-day cup was completed on March 15. The playoffs and final had to be postponed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, with South Africa going into strict lockdown on March 27.Although South Africa’s lockdown has been eased over the last two months, the country is preparing for the peak of the pandemic, which is expected to hit between July and September, and could see stricter restrictions being applied in hotspot areas. The Gauteng province, in which SuperSport Park is located, is one such area and on Tuesday the country’s health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize warned that the province could return to an increased level of lockdown in the coming weeks. Professional sport is not permitted under those levels.

Rodgers could forget about Idah as Celtic line up move for 25-goal star

Celtic's 2023/24 campaign will come to an end this weekend as they play their final match against their local rivals in the SFA Cup final on Saturday.

The Hoops travel across Glasgow to Hampden Park to take on Rangers as they eye up a domestic double, having already secured the Scottish Premiership crown.

Brendan Rodgers is looking to cap off a successful return to Parkhead, after he replaced Ange Postecoglou last summer, with a second trophy of the season.

The Northern Irish head coach will then be able to full focus on the upcoming summer transfer window and how he can make changes to bolster his playing squad.

He may want to improve the team in order to enjoy greater success in Europe after his side were knocked out of the Champions League and all European competitions by finishing bottom of their group.

Rodgers is reportedly looking to improve his frontline options and has been linked with an active interest in a current Scottish Premiership star, who could make the Hoops boss forget all about Adam Idah.

Celtic's interest in Premiership marksman

According to FotMob, Celtic are one of a number of clubs lining up a summer swoop to sign Aberdeen centre-forward Bojan Miovski to bolster their respective attacks.

The report claims that at least 20 clubs are keeping tabs on the North Macedonia international ahead of the upcoming transfer window, although only five of those teams currently have a serious interest in the star striker.

Bologna, Southampton, Feyenoord, Rangers, and Celtic are all said to be actively keen on a deal to sign the impressive marksman, who Aberdeen want a club-record fee for.

Bojan Miovski for North Macedonia.

Their record fee received for a player currently stands at the £6.5m deal Liverpool agreed for right-back Calvin Ramsey in the summer of 2022, which included £4m upfront.

FotMob's report states that Rodgers is looking to add more firepower to his arsenal in the off-season and has identified the Aberdeen sensation as a target.

The outlet adds that the Bhoys are currently ahead of their rivals, Rangers, in the race to land the left-footed whiz, but it does not reveal whether they are leading all clubs in their pursuit of him.

It does, however, reveal that teams are expecting bids to start flying in for Miovski sooner rather than later, which could mean that Celtic need to move quickly to get a deal over the line.

Rodgers could now forget all about loanee Adam Idah by securing a swoop to sign the proven Premiership star ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Adam Idah's impact at Celtic

The Hoops signed the Republic of Ireland international on loan from English Championship side Norwich City on deadline day at the start of February.

Adam Idah

Idah has made 18 appearances in all competitions for Celtic to date and chipped in with eight goals and two assists, but zero goals and zero assists in three SFA Cup outings ahead of the final on Saturday.

The 23-year-old striker has only been handed five league starts, in 15 matches, by Rodgers in the Premiership but has made a huge impact in his limited time on the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Idah has scored far more frequently than first-choice striker Kyogo Furuhashi, and been significantly better in the air when battling against opposition defenders.

Earlier this month, The Scottish Sun reported that Norwich will demand a fee of at least £5m and that number could go higher if other teams join the race for his services and an auction ensues.

However, the young centre-forward only scored 17 goals in 115 first-team matches for the Canaries and his goal spurt for Celtic may just be a flash in the pan.

He has not nailed down a regular starting spot over Kyogo, despite his impressive scoring record, and that suggests that Rodgers trusts the Japan international more at this time.

It could, therefore, make more sense for Celtic to go out and sign a striker who has proven his quality as a regular starter in the Premiership over the past two years in the form of Miovski.

Why Celtic should sign Bojan Miovski

The 24-year-old arrived at Aberdeen in the summer of 2022 and has been a terrific player for the club over the last two seasons with his sublime scoring quality.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

In his first campaign with the Dons, Miovski plundered an eye-catching 18 goals and three assists in 42 appearances in all competitions – a strong debut year in Scottish football.

16 of his goals during the 2022/23 season came in 37 Premiership outings, as he hit the ground running in the division and proved himself to be a reliable scorer.

As you can see in the table above, Miovski enjoyed another fantastic year in the Scottish top-flight this term as he racked up 16 strieks in 37 games for the second campaign in a row.

The left-footed star scored 25 goals and provided four assists in 52 matches in all competitions for Aberdeen this term, including four goals in four SFA Cup games.

Miovski, who was heralded as a "brilliant" boy by manager Barry Robson, has proven himself to be a fantastic goalscorer in Scotland as a regular scorer for two straight seasons, with 16 strikes in both of his Premiership campaigns.

Whereas, Idah has only been in Scotland since February and has yet to prove himself to be a reliable starter on a consistent basis, with five league starts to his name, and that is why the Aberdeen star could be a better addition if Rodgers is looking for a new first-choice.

Celtic hit gold with star who's worth more than Tierney & Edouard combined

The Hoops hit the jackpot with the impressive star who is now being linked with an exit.

ByDan Emery May 21, 2024

Therefore, Miovski's experience and goalscoring quality over the last two years mean that the Hoops boss can forget all about a permanent deal for Idah by signing the 25-goal centre-forward this summer.

Black Lives Matter – South Africa's cricket elite shows united face in moving Centurion tribute

Players take the knee, wear BLM armbands, sing Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika to make it a memorable day

After days of discussion around the Black Lives Matter issue, South Africa’s elite cricketers showed a united face against racism by taking a knee at Centurion’s SuperSport Park ahead of the 3TC match on Saturday. All 24 participating players, support staffers, CSA officials including Graeme Smith, the director of cricket, and members of the commentary team – Makhaya Ntini among them – joined in as South Africa staged its first live cricket match in four months. The gesture, in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, came after a fortnight that showed up the faultlines in South African cricket. On the eve of the match, Smith, Faf du Plessis and Dwaine Pretorius confirmed that they would take the knee, and joined three other white South African cricketers – Anrich Nortje, Rassie van der Dussen and Marizanne Kapp – in supporting Lungi Ngidi’s call for players to join the rest of the world in making a stand against racial discrimination. With no spectators allowed at the ground, television coverage showed the players standing in a half-circle facing the vacant presidential suite at SuperSport Park to sing South Africa’s national anthem Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika. The players then took their positions on the field, with Temba Bavuma’s Kites bowling first, to Reeza Hendricks’ Kingfishers. As the umpires called time, with the words “we are ready”, the Kites players – batsmen Janneman Malan and Hendricks – and the umpires took a knee on the field. The rest of the teams and everyone else involved stood around the outside of the boundary and did the same, their right fists raised in solidarity.Cameras panned to Smith, who was flanked by former Springbok World Cup-winning captain Francois Pienaar and former South Africa quick Ntini, who had made headlines this week as he recalled instances of racial discrimination during his time as an international. In an interview on television on Friday morning, Ntini revealed how he used to run from the ground to the team hotel to escape the “loneliness” of sitting on the team bus, where he said the rest of the squad would move to the back if he was in front and vice-versa.Janneman Malan takes a knee on the pitch prior to the start of the 3TC game•AFP via Getty Images

On the day, on the live broadcast, Ntini and Smith discussed the gestures at the start of the game. Smith told Ntini he could “feel the emotion coming from you”. Ntini replied: “that’s why we stand together.””A very important message is being put out today,” Smith said on air, and Ntini agreed, calling it “one of our greatest moments”, while also echoing the call for unity. “Everyone can see that, as South Africans, we all stand up and plough the same furrow together. We stand together,” Ntini said. “The more we do this the more change will happen. Here’s Lungi. He was the first one to voice it, and everyone [who has since supported BLM] stood by him.”Ngidi’s stance on BLM prompted reactions from both sides with four former players – Rudi Steyn, Pat Symcox, Brian McMillan and Boeta Dippenaar – criticising the youngster for not showing equal solidarity for the fight against the murder of predominantly white farmers in the country.Andile Phehlukwayo showcased his solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement•AFP via Getty Images

The quartet drew the ire of 31 former players including Vernon Philander, Ashwell Prince, Ntini, JP Duminy and Herschelle Gibbs, and five current coaches including Geoffrey Toyana and Wandile Gwazu who were in charge of Eagles and Kites respectively at the 3TC. The group collectively issued a statement in support of Ngidi and called for CSA and cricketers to support the BLM movement.Hashim Amla, who wasn’t in the list of signatories to that letter, made public his own thoughts on the matter the next day, thanking Ngidi and others who had “stood up for just causes in their own way”. On air, Smith said, “There’s no need for Ngidi to be attacked at all. I think he’s handled himself extremely well.”After the letter from the 36 players and coaches – all of colour – CSA issued a second statement supporting the BLM movement but it was not until Friday that more plans around how it would show that support were revealed when Smith, du Plessis and Pretorius said they would take a knee. Before, during, and after the game, the players and commentators, as well as CSA officials, wore armbands with ‘Black Lives Matter’ emblazoned on them. Andile Phehlukwayo, who was playing for the Eagles, also wore a “Black Lives Matter” t-shirt under his team shirt, and showed it off when he dismissed Heinrich Klaasen in the final innings of the match.AB de Villiers, who sparkled for the Eagles as they won, touched upon the subject in a post-match interview, saying that the aim was “solidarity in South Africa”.”There were obviously quite a few more important things out there today [than just the cricket]. Just getting out as cricketers and playing a bit of cricket, doing it for solidarity in South Africa. Showing that we can stick together as a nation. That, to me, was ultimately what it was all about,” de Villiers told the official broadcaster.

Liverpool can sign £85m Inacio alternative who Carra dubbed a "superstar"

Enthralling international tournaments lurk just around the corner but for many teams, like Liverpool, a heavy eye is being pinned on the upcoming summer transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp led Liverpool to a third-place Premier League finish and Carabao Cup trophy this season as he draped the curtain on an illustrious and immortal tenure, rekindling Anfield's first team following a dour preceding season.

Liverpool celebrate winning the Carabao Cup

With Arne Slot at the helm and an altogether new structure in place, the Reds are entering the unknown, but there's one former target who remains at the centre of transfer rumours.

Liverpool in the race for long-time target

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are set to clash against Manchester United for the signing of Goncalo Inacio this summer, having had a vested interest in the Portuguese defender last year.

The Sporting Lisbon star's €60m (roughly £51m) release clause means that an official bid would require some deep thinking, but for a player that has been on FSG's radar for a long time and has just played a central role in a Liga Portugal-winning campaign, he may well fit the bill.

The next step for Slot

Inacio, aged 22, is undoubtedly one of football's finest ball-playing defenders, and while he has yet to take the step outside his homeland, there is little doubt surrounding his skill set and potential.

As per FBref, the centre-half ranks among the top 11% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 1% for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 8% for progressive carries and the top 14% for successful take-ons per 90.

Goncalo Inacio in action for Sporting Lisbon

But is he the best option for Liverpool, and indeed for Slot's fresh style? Perhaps not. Not when Benfica's Antonio Silva is also on Slot's radar.

According to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, Liverpool are also monitoring Silva alongside Arsenal, though the centre-back will not be allowed to leave for anything less than his €100m (£85m) release clause.

Given that the exciting defensive talents both ply their trade in the same division, the table above delineates the Benfica phenom's greater suitability with perfect clarity.

Silva has effectively outperformed his countryman across every metric, notably enjoying far more impressive defensive numbers, as well as chalking up higher rates of recovery to underscore his superior athleticism.

It's no wonder that Jamie Carragher exalted that "he is going to be a superstar" following an almighty performance against Juventus in the Champions League.

Slot's slick-possession, high-tempo system would see Inacio succeed, sure, but the added formidability of Silva to blend with his immense technical quality and never-missing distribution would only enhance the Anfield first team and hand Slot a potential world-beater.

The 20-year-old ranks among the top 1% of centre-backs across divisions similar to Liga Portugal over the past year for pass completion, the top 5% for tackles, the top 15% for progressive passes and the top 13% for blocks and successful take-ons per 90.

He can do everything that Inacio can – and more. Silva would cost more to prise away from the Eagles' talons but there's no question that he has the scope to soar to the very top of the continental game.
