Andy Balbirnie – 'If Ireland don't qualify for the World Cup, we've got no excuses'

“I think everyone knows there is a big gulf in the teams. But we do have match-winners,” he says about facing South Africa

Andy Balbirnie has said there will be “no excuses” if his Ireland team fail to qualify for the 2023 World Cup, after a slow start to the Super League campaign which will determine whether or not they have to play in a separate qualifying tournament.India qualify for the tournament automatically as hosts, and seven other highest-ranked teams in the Super League will join them, but the bottom five teams will be required to take part in a qualifying event, with only the top two reaching the 10-team World Cup.Related

Ireland pulled off an upset by beating England in their third Super League game last summer, but have struggled for consistency since then, losing 3-0 to Afghanistan in the UAE and 2-1 against Netherlands last month, putting a major dent in their chances of automatic qualification.”It gives us two chances to qualify for a World Cup,” Balbirnie said, two days before the start of a three-match Super League series against South Africa. “If you don’t qualify, you’ve got no excuses. I understand it’s a bit tricky for the teams who float in and around the No. 6, 7, 8 mark in the rankings, but you’ve got to give everyone a fair opportunity.”That’s what we were crying out for when they reduced the World Cup [to 10 teams] – we wanted a good opportunity to qualify for it. We’ve got that now, and that’s what we’re really trying to do, one way or another. If it’s through the Super League, great. If it’s not, we’ll go wherever the qualifying tournament is held and try and get through there. If we don’t at the end of it, well, we only have ourselves to blame.”Their five defeats this year mean that Ireland face an uphill battle to qualify, not least having lost their most recent series 2-1 against the only associate member in the competition, the Netherlands. While Ireland were not happy with the quality of pitches provided in Utrecht – “pretty poor” was Balbirnie’s description – their failure to provide enough support to Paul Stirling, the leading run-scorer in ODI cricket worldwide this year, cost them.”I don’t think we adapted as quickly as we should have,” Balbirnie said. “A few days after, having to do our quarantine [meant] a lot of time to reflect. What we can take forward is that we now have an opportunity to play one of the top teams in the world on our home soil. That’s the beauty of this league – you get an opportunity to rectify the mistakes made in the previous [series].”A lot of people on the outside will look at this and say there’s only one team winning this series, and that’s fair enough because it’s a really impressive South Africa side. I don’t have to keep harping on about how good a team they are – I think everyone knows there is a big gulf in the teams.”But we do have match-winners in our team. We showed that last year when we played England. We maybe haven’t got the results we’d want recently, but whenever we’re put in front of a really tough challenge, we tend to come out with something. The guys are going to go out and express themselves and hopefully can come out with a good result.”I’m not going to sit here and say we’re going to win the series willy-nilly – we’re going to have to play really good cricket and potentially catch them on an off-day – but that’s the beauty of this format. You have these opportunities to put yourself on a platform against the world’s best. You could say [it’s] David and Goliath, but I suppose David beat Goliath in the end.”There is an intriguing subplot in this series, with Curtis Campher – the allrounder who is returning from an ankle injury – playing against the country of his birth for the first time. Campher played for South Africa’s age-group teams up until Under-19 level, but decided to use the Irish passport he holds through his grandmother to commit to the national team in early 2020, making his debut against England last summer. Eight games into his ODI career, he is averaging 50.83 with the bat and 30.62 with the ball.”Our medical team have done a great job with him to get him back on the park this early after an operation, and naturally he’s very excited to play against South Africa, having spent the majority of his life there,” Balbirnie said. “Everyone is obviously aware of where he’s come from and his quick turnaround to play for Ireland last year. It’ll be a really proud day for him and his family. He’s gone a different route than most of us, but he’s one of us now and is a really important player for us [so] I’m really excited to see how he goes against his old country.”William Porterfield, the veteran batter and Balbirnie’s predecessor, will open the batting alongside Stirling on the back of an anchoring hundred in the Inter-Provincial 50-over competition last month. He has been in and out of the side and has not made an ODI fifty since May 2019, but following Kevin O’Brien’s recent retirement from the format, he will be expected to bring some experienced to a relatively young side.

Chelsea open talks with Victor Osimhen as Todd Boehly discovers key clause

Chelsea have already opened talks with a top transfer target via his representatives ahead of the January window, as chairman Todd Boehly and his transfer team discover a key clause which could help them strike a realistic winter deal.

Chelsea's rumoured transfer plans for January

The west Londoners were once again one of Premier League football’s most active clubs in terms of new signings over the summer window, having spent around £200 million on no less than 13 new recruits before deadline day on August 30.

Chelsea chiefs have told in-form star that he now faces being sold

Joao Felix, Mike Penders, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Renato Veiga, Estevao Willian, Filip Jorgensen, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley, Omari Kellyman, Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho all sealed moves to Stamford Bridge, but co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are already said to be planning for 2025.

Chelsea are monitoring new right-back options, according to some reports, as concerns surround star man Reece James’ injury record and current hamstring problem.

Meanwhile, it is also believed that a few players could depart. Chelsea are apparently open to selling Mykhailo Mudryk in January, alongside the likes of Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi, with all three failing to muster their best form or gain consistent opportunities in the first team right now.

Manager Enzo Maresca has displayed ruthlessness in trimming Chelsea’s bloated squad since his arrival from Leicester City, with Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallagher, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku, Omari Hutchinson, Angelo Gabriel, Diego Moreira, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, Tino Anjorin, Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling, Lesley Ugochukwu, Armando Broja, Djordje Petrovic, Trevoh Chalobah, Kepa Arrizabalaga, David Datro Fofana, Aflie Gilchrist and Basir Humphreys all being leaving Chelsea on loan or permanent deals.

This plethora of exits could free up both squad space and funds for Maresca to bring in a new number nine, something they tried to do in the summer window. Chelsea were involved in a public last-minute race with Al-Ahli to sign Victor Osimhen, who was later forced to accept a loan move to Galatasaray instead.

There have been suggestions that Chelsea could go back in for Osimhen in January, due to a break-clause in his Galatasaray contract which would allow interested sides to strike a deal mid-season.

Chelsea open talks with Osimhen's agents ahead of January

Now, as per TEAMtalk, it appears Maresca’s side are already attempting to make a head start. Indeed, it is believed Chelsea have opened talks with Osimhen via his representatives, as they attempt to see whether they can lure him away from the Super Lig this winter. This comes Napoli as lower his release clause to around £63m, which has apparently put Boehly and Chelsea chiefs on alert.

The £160,000-per-week striker is yet to score for Turkey’s champions, but has managed two assists in his opening two league games. TT write that Juventus are also in the race for him, but going by John Obi Mikel’s comments recently, Osimhen may well favour a move to the Premier League with Chelsea.

“We’ve had a few text messages here and there,” said Obi-Mikel in August. “I’ve told him how good the club is and what a fantastic place it is to improve. He’s interested which is encouraging. He wants to come to the club.

“Chelsea is a massive club and he would like to follow in the footsteps of other Nigerians to play for Chelsea. I think it’s 60/40 in favour that Osimhen comes, I think so, he wants to come. I think there should be a straight swap because Napoli want [Romelu] Lukaku.”

Western Storm clinched a nine-wicket win over Thunder in their rain-disrupted Charlotte Edwards Cup clash at Chester Boughton Hall. The heavens opened one over into Storm’s chase, with the visitors 2 for 0, after Thunder had posted 110 for 8 from their 20 overs. Once the rain cleared almost two hours later, Storm were set an adjusted target of 33 after five overs – meaning they required 31 from 24 balls.Fi Morris broke the back of it by striking four boundaries off Sophia Turner’s first over to take Storm to 21 without loss. Emma Lamb’s first ball dismissed Morris for 19, stumped by Ellie Threlkeld, but Georgia Hennessey and Danielle Gibson comfortably guided Storm to their reduced target with 11 balls to spare.Lamb had looked set to continue her fine form with the bat as she made a quick-fire 21 to lead Thunder’s recovery after the early loss of Georgie Boyce to a brilliant catch from Gibson. But Lamb fell to Lauren Parfitt from the final ball of the Powerplay to leave Thunder 40 for 2.Piepa Cleary and Threlkeld looked well set but Storm took control thanks to a double-wicket maiden from Morris. Gibson took her third catch to dismiss Cleary for 13, with Threlkeld clean bowled for 12.Thunder then slipped to 61 for 5 when Daisy Mullan was bowled by Gibson and the hosts were struggling to post a competitive total.Laura Marshall and Laura Jackson counter-attacked with a brisk 26-run stand, punctuated by a number of well-timed shots down the ground. But Storm keeper Nat Wraith produced an excellent catch to dismiss Jackson for 12 off Lauren Filer and then stump Danielle Collins for 3 from the bowling of Nicole Harvey.Marshall fell in the final over to give Gibson a second wicket, but her 19 had helped Thunder reach their total of 110, before the rain came and brought about a routine victory target.

Luke Fletcher, Dane Paterson destroy Leicestershire in Notts stroll

Only 20.2 overs required for home side to chase down meagre target

Nottinghamshire advanced their Royal London Cup ambitions in ruthless style, cruising past Leicestershire by seven wickets with almost 30 overs to balls to spare in front of an appreciative audience at Welbeck Cricket Club.Skipper Peter Trego hit two sixes off pace bowler Chris Wright in his 31-ball 39, Ben Slater picked up six boundaries in his 38 and the young South African batter Matthew Montgomery made 27 not out, reaching a target of 145 in 20.2 overs.Earlier, Luke Fletcher had taken 4 for 30 and Dane Paterson 3 for 25 as Leicestershire were bowled out in 43.1 overs, 16-year-old legspinning all-rounder Rehan Ahmed top-scoring with 35 not out, the highest score of a fledgling senior career, as he and Ben Mike shared a 70-run stand for the eighth wicket. In overcast conditions after Nottinghamshire had won the toss, Fletcher had Rishi Patel edging to second slip and nipped one back to bowl Harry Swindells in his first three overs, as well as having Lewis Hill dropped at second slip before he had scored.Fletcher removed Marcus Harris, the Australian left-hander nicking behind for 16, and Hill had another escape a couple of balls later as a miscued pull fell just out of the reach of midwicket.Paterson dismissed George Rhodes via a low catch to second slip before Fletcher, who ultimately bowled through for his full 10 overs, picked up his fourth wicket as an Arron Lilley prod outside off lodged in the gloves of the wicketkeeper. When Louis Kimber edged Paterson to first slip, Leicestershire were 53 for 6 in the 18th, which became 68 for 7 as Hill departed for 25, a third victim for ‘keeper Dane Schadendorf a day after his 19th birthday.Ahmed and Mike fought back, adding 70 for the eighth wicket with the teenager looking entirely unfazed in only his third senior game, but once Mike had been caught on the midwicket boundary, Slater parrying the ball into the air before ensuring his feet were the right side of the rope as he took the catch, the innings ended quickly, Ed Barnes playing across one from Trego before Chris Wright was caught behind.Sol Budinger set the tone for the Outlaws chase by smashing three of his first 11 balls for four before edging behind as he went for another expansive drive, with Slater and Trego soon rattling along at a similar pace as the Powerplay overs yielded 62 for 1 compared with the Foxes’ 21 for 2.Trego pulled Wright for six and picked up another maximum from a steepling top edge and though both fell to quick succession, the double breakthrough won merely a stay of execution for Leicestershire before Montgomery and Lyndon James added 48 runs in 39 balls to finish the job. After Trego feathered a catch behind shaping to cut Ahmed’s legspin, Slater perished in similar fashion to Mike, having timed the ball superbly until then. Remarkably, it was the first time in seven completed innings in List A matches for Nottinghamshire that he had failed to pass fifty.

Instead of Fernandes: Man Utd’s "most important player" must now be captain

Manchester United have endured a very difficult few weeks, with Erik ten Hag’s side suffering some embarrassing results in the process.

The Red Devils have failed to win any of their last four matches in all competitions in a run that has included one defeat and three draws.

Whilst on the face of it, the run may not seem as awful as many have made out, the club have thrown away victories against FC Twente and Porto in the Europa League after leading in both encounters.

The defeat against Tottenham Hotspur was a real blow, with Ten Hag’s side being outclassed by Ange Postecoglou’s men at Old Trafford – sending them to their third league defeat already in 2024/25.

One player in particular was disappointing during the defeat, whilst also producing a just as embarrassing display in the Europa League earlier this week.

Bruno Fernandes’ stats against Porto

After his sending off against Spurs last weekend, midfielder Bruno Fernandes went into the meeting in his home nation with a point to prove and make up for his dismissal at Old Trafford.

Whilst his red card was rescinded after a review by the Premier League’s panel, it would’ve undoubtedly been playing in the back of his mind for the clash in the Europa League.

However, in a game of redemption, Fernandes failed to make a positive impression for Ten Hag’s side – often looking clumsy and wasteful in possession.

The 30-year-old managed 67 touches during the draw, losing six duels and losing possession ten times – as he failed to turn the game in the Red Devils’ favour.

His misery was compounded late on, receiving a second yellow card for a high boot – with Fernandes seeing red for the second time in as many fixtures.

It’s safe to say that his actions in recent games aren’t those of a club captain, with his leadership role potentially coming into question, which could allow one player to take the reins in the near future.

The man who could replace Fernandes as United’s captain

Andre Onana endured a tricky first few months at Old Trafford, bringing his addition into question after the club forked out £47m for his signature last summer.

Pundit Chris Sutton was among those firing criticism the way of the former Inter Milan star last autumn, suggesting that he was a “downgrade” on his predecessor, David De Gea. By the goalkeeper’s own admission, it took him six months to “feel good” in Manchester.

However, he’s rapidly turned his fortunes around, producing numerous moments of magic so far this campaign, which includes a brilliant penalty save away at Southampton and a tremendous double save against Crystal Palace which secured Ten Hag’s side a vital point.

Whilst the defence admittedly hasn’t been up to the standards required so far this season, he has the “leadership” qualities and the “presence” that are required of someone to lead the club out of the current tricky period – as previously hailed by pundit Shaka Hislop.

His subsequent personal displays led to Statman Dave dubbing the shot-stopper as United’s “most important player” so far this season, with his performances saving United on many occasions.

Given Fernandes’ recent lack of leadership with his back-to-back dismissals, his position as captain must surely come into question, with his careless nature in certain situations restricting the club from emerging out of their current rut.

Onana would be an excellent choice to take over the armband, demonstrating all the qualities the Portuguese international lacks in that department, potentially handing him the added confidence boost and helping the backline transform their recent fortunes.
