Bigger mistake than Palmer: Pep must rue Man City selling "complete" star

Manchester City’s academy has produced some fantastic players over the years. Some of those are members of Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad.

Of course, Phil Foden is the most prominent of those, and he has become one of the best players in the Premier League, having been named the PFA Player of the Year last season. The likes of Rico Lewis and James McAtee are also playing for City’s first-team, with Lewis especially a key player.

However, Cityzens academy graduates also go on to have good careers away from the club. Morgan Rogers is a prime example of this, and he is thriving under Unai Emery at Aston Villa. However, perhaps the best City academy star who is now shining at another club is Cole Palmer.

Palmer’s City career

Palmer’s rise over the last 18 months or so has been absolutely phenomenal. At present, there is arguably “no better player in the Premier League”, according to pundit Jamie Carragher, while he is also now an important player for England, scoring in the Euro 2024 final against Spain.

He did not really get the chance to show what he could do during his time at the Etihad Stadium. After graduating from the academy of the club for at under-18s and under-23s level, the 22-year-old managed just 41 appearances for the club in total.

Palmer scored six times and grabbed two assists, including a strike in the UEFA Super Cup and the Community Shield against Arsenal.

Manchester City's Cole Palmer celebrates scoring their first goal

He left the club to join Chelsea in September 2023 for a fee of £42.5m, and the attacker has been simply sensational at Stamford Bridge. Palmer has scored 32 goals and grabbed 20 assists in just 59 games for the Blues so far.

Last season, he managed 33 goals and assists in as many Premier League games, and won the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Guardiola admitted that he wanted Palmer to stay at the club last season, but could not convince the talented winger to remain at the club. He was full of praise for the City academy graduate, calling him “an incredible threat” before the FA Cup semi-final between City and Chelsea last term.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

Looking back on it, selling Palmer certainly seems like a blunder by City. However, given the attacking talent City have, the likes of Foden for example, it might not be too costly. There was another former player who they may regret selling more, especially given the issues in the side this season.

The former player City may regret selling

The player in question here is Spanish right-back Pedro Porro. The 25-year-old joined the Cityzens in 2019 for a fee in the region of £5.5m from Girona. However, he never played for the club and made a move to Sporting after a loan spell at Real Valladolid.

He spent a year on loan in Portugal before joining the club permanently, costing just £7.2m, and thrived in Lisbon. In 98 games for the club, he scored 12 goals and grabbed 20 assists. Tottenham Hotspur signed him in the 2023 winter window, on a loan deal with an obligation to buy him for £39m.

The Spaniard has dazzled for the Lilywhites so far, playing 68 times for the club. He has scored nine goals and grabbed 12 assists, with one of the goals coming away to the Cityzens, in Spurs’ recent 4-1 thrashing of the Premier League champions.

City could certainly have done with Porro this season. They are having issues at right-back, with Kyle Walker looking a shadow of his former self. In fact, as the stats from Squawka show, the Spaniard is bettering the City number two in several key metrics.

That includes the number of chances created per 90 minutes, with 1.7 compared to one, and the number of duels won per game, with 3.9 to Walker’s 3.3. As football statistician Statman Dave described him, Porro is a “complete” player.

Looking back on the deal to sell Porro to Sporting in the first place, it might be one City regret more than the decision to let Palmer go. Whilst they have plenty of competition in those attacking areas, the Cityzens are short of numbers defensively, and given Walker’s performances this season, could have done with reinforcements.

Guardiola may well wish he had Porro available to him now because his fellow Spaniard could have been incredibly useful to help fix what has been a poor season so far.

Dean Elgar: South Africa 'trying too hard' to compete a 'scenario' behind opening Test innings defeat

“I am trying to wrap my head around,” says the captain about his side’s lack of intensity against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval

Dean Elgar did not blame off-field issues, quarantine or the absence of a warm-up match for South Africa’s lack of intensity in the first Test in Christchurch but thinks his team may be trying too hard in their quest to compete.Like coach Mark Boucher, Elgar could not completely “wrap my head,” around how South Africa have gone from the highs of beating India a month ago to the low of their second-biggest Test defeat ever, but could not fault their effort despite acknowledging a lack in intensity.”The harder you try, the more you fail,” Elgar said, in reference to his bowlers’ inability to hold an end on a seamer-friendly surface. In 117.5 overs, South Africa only sent down 15 maiden overs, compared to New Zealand’s 28 in 91 overs across both innings, and allowed the hosts to bat them out of the match.”It’s extremely frustrating being a captain and the ball has been hit both sides of the wicket. You can’t set a field for that,” Elgar said. “That’s down to execution and the skills department. I can’t say it was nerves. We were so deep into the game, those nerves were out of our system. It’s extremely difficult to build pressure when runs are being scored on both sides of the wicket. It also boils down to guys trying too hard. The harder you try, the more you fail. That might have been a scenario but it’s not an excuse. It allowed their middle-to-lower order to come in and dictate the pace of play. That was down to us not being consistent enough.”Ultimately, though, South Africa lost the match in the first innings, when they were dismissed for their lowest total against New Zealand – 95 – and looked completely at sea against the moving ball on a green top. Although Elgar said it “would have been nice to have played a warm-up game,” in the build-up to the match he indicated conditions at Lincoln University, where South Africa trained, equipped them well for the Hagley Oval and agreed that not having a competitive fixture before the Tests was not a reason for their collapse. “I am not going to use quarantine as an excuse. We are here to represent our country and we need to be firing by the time match day comes. If that is an excuse, it’s a very weak excuse to be using.”Instead, he explained the batters’ issues as a case of being too defensive, with 13 of the dismissals coming from catches behind the wicket. “When the ball is going around a little bit, you still have to have a positive mindset. You will have to look to score but in the same breath, you have to remain pretty disciplined within your game plans. That ties in with our intensity. That is one area that I can put my finger on,” he said. While it is unfair to single out one batter from South Africa’s poor performance, the spotlight has fallen on opener-turned-No. 3 Aiden Markram, who averages less than 26 in his last 20 Tests and 9.7 in his last 10 innings. Elgar still backs Markram as a quality player who is one good innings away from glory but admitted there is an issue around his form, which is probably caused by the same over-eagerness that affected the attack. “It’s not foreign that he has been struggling. I am sure that conversation will come up with the selectors,” Elgar said. “Maybe it’s the mental game he is fighting.”We know he is a quality player. He is only one innings away from turning a lot of things around for him. It’s also the same case of trying too hard. The conversation around his position has been in the media. The selectors have to have conversations around that. It’s a very valid question around him as a person and his capacity in the side. He needs to stop trying so hard. Naturally he is a gifted player and he is one score away from turning things around.”File photo – Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar runs between the wickets•AFP via Getty Images

Markam was moved down into the spot Keegan Petersen left vacant when he contracted Covid-19 but essentially operated as an opener in this match and could find himself benched when Petersen returns for the home series against Bangladesh, or sooner. South Africa have Ryan Rickelton, who is averaging over 100 in first-class cricket this season with three hundreds from his last five innings, in reserve. They were considering playing him in the first Test and will likely do so again in the second. It would seem a no-brainer, even though Boucher said the team management decided a line-up with Rickleton was, “how we felt the line-up needed to be,” and selection convener Victor Mpitsang told ESPNcricinfo Rickleton was overlooked because Zubayr Hamza has more experience.Elgar was asked if he was happy with team selection and indicated he was, with the debate in his mind over the ratio of batters to bowlers, rather than which batters were being used. “I was very comfortable with the XI we selected. I am a captain that is pro having a spinner from a stability point of view but history tells you at the Hagley Oval, spin doesn’t have much effect. Playing in foreign conditions you have to go with what history tells you,” he said. “I was comfortable with the four-seamer approach, knowing that against India we only used four seamers. As I sit here now, I am pretty comfortable with the 7-4 split but the next few days will be interesting for us on this very topic.”After losing in three days, South Africa have given themselves two extra days off before the second Test starts on Friday and Elgar said they will use the time to mull over selection and ponder why they appeared so flat in the first Test, knowing that it is not the myriad off-field issues that continue to plague South African cricket. “It’s not foreign to us with regards to what’s been happening off the field. As a group we’ve worked through that and worked it out already. I don’t see that as being an influence in our camp,” he said. “It (the poor performance) is something I am also trying to wrap my head around. I was trying to process it last night and still haven’t come to anything yet. Hopefully in the next day or two I’ll be able to put my finger on why.”

Ollie Watkins injury update ahead of Aston Villa trip to Nottingham Forest

In pursuit of a fourth-consecutive victory in all competitions to put their previously worrying form to bed once and for all, Aston Villa may be forced to square off against Nottingham Forest will out one of Unai Emery’s star men.

Aston Villa injury news

The Villans have bounced back in style after going as many as eight games without victory in all competitions, since defeating Brentford, Southampton and then RB Leipzig in the Champions League in midweek. Almost making up for their previous run, Villa’s toughest test awaits this weekend when they face a Nottingham Forest side they can leapfrog into fifth and beyond with all three points.

Jhon Duran was once again the man of the moment in midweek, as he has so often been so far this season. Coming from the bench, again as he so often finds himself doing, the forward’s goal put Villa in the lead before Ross Barkley was left to score an eventual winner following Leipzig’s fightback.

Aston Villa must rue losing £22m flop who's now outscoring Duran & Watkins

This former Aston Villa flop has suddenly become a goal machine.

As another tough task awaits this weekend, however, Duran may not be forced to save the day from the bench. As relayed by the Daily Mail, Ollie Watkins is facing a race to be fit to face Nottingham Forest after limping off at half-time against Leipzig – opening the door for Duran to make an impact from the off.

In usual circumstances, losing a player of Watkins’ calibre would be a major blow. In this instance, however, it’s simply a case of swapping one excellent goalscorer for another for Emery this weekend, should his starting forward miss out through injury. Having started just once in the Premier League all season, Duran will be chomping at the bit to take his potential opportunity against Forest.

Watkins injury could pave the way for Duran

Duran is arguably one of the most unfortunate strikers in European football. Not many can say that they’ve taken their opportunities as often as the young forward and still not been rewarded with a starting place. In just 406 minutes of Premier League football – the equivalent of almost five games – Duran has scored five goals in what is a perfect record.

Jhon Duran

Emery has remained firm with his decision to start Watkins, however, who has scored seven goals himself. But the question over whether accommodating both goalscorers is possible will continue to be thrown in the direction of the Spaniard.

Full of praise for £130,000-a-week Watkins, Emery told reporters as relayed by TNT Sports last season: “He’s amazing. Because he’s a really hard worker and his commitment to work every day is amazing.

“When he is scoring goals, it’s the main objective he can have. Where he is assisting as well, he’s contributing to help the team. But even when he’s not doing both, he’s working for the team.

Alas, the chance could now fall the way of Duran once and for all against Nottingham Forest to stake a greater claim than ever that he should be the forward to lead the line for Aston Villa and Emery.

Azhar rues batters not converting half-centuries 'into 150s and 170s'

Pakistan’s collapse, he suggested, came about because conditions were difficult for batters new to the crease

Umar Farooq23-Mar-2022

On an otherwise bleak day for Pakistan, Azhar Ali scored 78 and brought up the milestone of 7000 Test runs•AFP/Getty Images

Pakistan have a long history of collapses in Test cricket, and they added a new chapter on Wednesday, when they lost their last five wickets for just four runs – a new record – to hand Australia a 123-run first-innings lead. Azhar Ali has conceded that the lower-order implosion has “dented Pakistan’s chances” in the Lahore Test, but has not lost hope that they can come back into the game.Related

Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc inspire Pakistan collapse of 7 for 20

The price Pakistan paid for Faheem Ashraf's exclusion

Cummins and Starc finally blow the house down

Pakistan's worst collapse, and a new Asian high for Australia's quicks

Pakistan began the day at 90 for 1, and the overnight pair of Azhar and Abdullah Shafique batted through the first session and stretched their second-wicket stand to 150 to put Pakistan in a solid position at 170 for 1 in response to Australia’s 391. Along the way, Azhar also brought up a major milestone, becoming only the fifth Pakistan batter to score 7000 Test runs. There were no major partnerships thereafter, however, as Pakistan crumbled around Babar Azam’s 67 to be bowled out for 268, with Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins running amok in furious spells of pace and reverse-swing.”The collapse we had after tea has dented our chances a little bit in the game but Test cricket is like that – it goes up and down,” Azhar said in his press conference at the end of the day’s play. “That’s the beauty of Test cricket and hopefully we can turn things around tomorrow.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

He was generous in his praise for Starc and Cummins. “We have to give credit to them. We always knew how good they are, especially Starc when it comes to reverse-swing. Cummins, he’s an all-round very good bowler – he is the top bowler in the world right now, and he exploited the conditions really well.”It was hard work for the fast bowlers but there was always a kind of low bounce and reverse-swing was going on since yesterday. They kept on bowling on the right areas and kept asking questions, even to the set batsmen as well, and late in the day there was some good results for them. It was lovely to see good, fast, reverse-swing bowling, and unfortunately we were on the receiving end.”Asked for a possible reason behind Pakistan’s collapse after tea, Azhar suggested the pitch was not an easy one for new batters to settle down on. Knowing this, he said Pakistan’s batters had been conscious of needing to bat long when set, but that didn’t quite happen, with neither he, Shafique nor Babar going on to convert their half-centuries into a hundred.”When you play on these pitches you have to bat long, because runs don’t come very quickly. Our intent was to maximise the partnerships because it becomes a little difficult for the new batsman, because runs don’t come quickly, you don’t become set, and reverse-swing starts very early. So I think against a quality bowling side like Australia who have Cummins and Starc, they can cause problems in these conditions especially for new batsmen.”Our 80s, we wanted to convert them into 150s and 170s because it was difficult for the new batsmen. Once our partnership [Azhar-Shafique] was broken, it wasn’t easy for the new batsmen who came in. Unfortunately the collapse happened very early, and yes, we are in some trouble. But we will try to change [our situation] and in a similar way we have the opportunity to take quick wickets and change things around.”Pat Cummins held a stunning return catch to remove Azhar Ali•AFP

Pakistan’s scoring rate – 2.29 over their innings – became a talking point too. Other than Babar, who scored his runs at a strike rate of 51.14, no batter even struck in the 40s. Azhar said these scoring rates were an outcome of the slowness of the pitch.”The conditions basically dictate how you play cricket, Azhar said. “If you compare across all three Test matches, both teams have been batting similarly. Even when we used to play in the UAE, one question was always asked, why we score so slowly. When you get slow pitches it’s not easy to score quickly. It’s easier when the ball is new, but when the ball gets old and there are straight fields [more fielders in front of the wicket], and when there are low-bounce pitches, it’s not easy to score quick runs.”Pakistan went into this match with five specialist bowlers, leaving out their allrounder Faheem Ashraf and playing only six specialist batters including the keeper Mohammad Rizwan. Asked if that had left them with a long tail that contributed to their collapse, Azhar backed the decision, saying it was a positive move made with taking 20 wickets at the forefront.”You have to take a chance sometimes,” Azhar said. “I think it was a positive move from the management, they wanted five bowlers because you win Test matches only by taking 20 wickets. Our top six were the ones scoring maximum runs and we wanted to take [extra] responsibility as a batting unit. Unfortunately this collapse happened, but it doesn’t mean the team selection was wrong. Naseem Shah proved that decision to play him as a fifth bowler paid off; he took four wickets and bowled very well. So sometimes, while taking a positive decision, you have to sacrifice something else, and we stand behind the decision as a team and and optimistic that it will pay off.”

Dogged Nick Browne provides platform for Dan Lawrence ton before Lancashire hit back

Four wickets late in the day help wrest advantage away from Essex

Paul Edwards19-May-2022

Dan Lawrence made his first hundred of the season•Getty Images

Essex 280 for 7 (Lawrence 100*, Browne 71) vs LancashireReports suggest that Essex’s home match against Yorkshire would have bored the bollocks off a bison and the potted scores reinforce the impression: 403 and 167 without loss plays 465 hardly indicates an orgy of attacking cricket ending in a headboard-rattling climax. But Nick Browne got some satisfaction from it all. Before his second innings in the game at Chelmsford, the Essex batsman had managed 68 runs in eight innings. So Browne was mightily relieved that sober-suited Sunday to face 178 balls and make 50 not out in 200 minutes; and no doubt his quiet pleasure was shared by colleagues who know how important their opener’s contributions can be. Eleven days on from that tedium, Dan Lawrence, in particular, appreciated that innings’ value on this opening day at Emirates Old Trafford. For Browne weathered the first new ball and thus created the conditions whereby Lawrence could mark his return from a hamstring injury with a fluent unbeaten century of which the England selectors will take note. And the value of Browne’s 71, which was ended on in freakish fashion in mid-afternoon, was made even clearer in the final hour or so of the day’s play as the Lancashire seamers made excellent use of the second new nut to take three wickets and also induce a nervous brain-fade from Lawrence who ran out Adam Rossington by the sort of distance normally seen in the Foxhunters’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. In fairness, Lawrence was on 99 at the time but that dismissal was all of a piece with the frantic period that saw Lancashire make four breakthroughs, the last of which was Simon Harmer, whose second delivery was one of the snorters of the season from Luke Wood, a vicious lifter that Harmer could only glove to Phil Salt. When the new ball was taken, Essex were 227 for 3; at the close they were 280 for 7. Lawrence is there still but this is a different game now. Yet again, Lancashire’s bowlers won some battles and found a way to wrest something from a day that had looked unpromising. The opening of our day featured other duels, one of them rather venerable. James Anderson and Alastair Cook are former England colleagues and firm friends. So there were no scores, however gentle, to settle when Anderson bowled to Cook this morning. There was, however, a total to build on a fresh pitch and the opener’s contribution to that effort was a negligible couple of runs. But it was Tom Bailey, not Anderson, who took what is still Essex’s most-prized wicket when he straightened a ball just enough in the ninth over to take the thin edge of Cook’s bat. Salt completed the dismissal and Bailey duly forgot the confident leg-before shout that had been turned down just two balls previously. The morning session brought Lancashire no more joy. Hasan Ali had been awarded his Lancashire cap half an hour before what will be the final game of a successful seven-week stint at Old Trafford but Browne marked the occasion by twice cover-driving the Pakistani fast bowler for four. And the solid progress suggested by 71 for 1 at lunch was verging on affluence half an hour into the afternoon session after Browne had hit four fours in the space of 18 balls. Perhaps Tom Westley became a little giddy with all this. Or perhaps he thought slog-sweeping a delivery from Parkinson that pitched something like 18 inches outside the off stump was a risk worth taking. In truth, there was more slog than sweep about the business and Salt caught the top-edge to remove Westley for 30.Browne, though, batted on in the manner of a man proceeding in policeman-like fashion to his destination and unwilling to be distracted from his commission. The first goal, of course, was three figures but the opener did not get there. After ducking a series of bouncers from Anderson with apparent ease, Browne punched the same bowler very firmly at Dane Vilas, who was fielding at silly point. The Lancashire skipper clutched the ball to his groin in triumphant agony and thereby achieved a passable, if unintentional, imitation of the sign that used to hang outside a pawnbroker’s shop in the era before cash converters. The day’s baubles still appeared likely to belong to Essex, though. Lawrence’s return to competitive cricket was helped by some uncharacteristic long-hops down the leg side from Matt Parkinson and he had put on 97 with Paul Walter when Lancashire grabbed the second new ball the moment it became available. Most of Lawrence’s fours had been scored behind the wicket but there was no discredit in that. He looked to be piloting his team to a position of dominance when the excellent Bailey bowled Walter and had Matt Critchley caught behind in the space of four balls.Immediately the temper of the match changed. Anderson induced an edge from Lawrence on 71, only to see the ball fly between first and second slip. The latter fielder, Keaton Jennings, then dropped Rossington on 5. Lawrence, meanwhile, was cruising smoothly towards the century he only reached when he had sold Rossington down the river. Lancashire had lost two sessions of this day fairly comfortably yet still ended the piece more or less level. It is the mark of sides that win things.
