FLAMENGO AINDA LONGE DO ESPERADO

Em desvantagem, o interino Mario Jorge começou a mudar o time.

Ajaz Patel, Daryl Mitchell and Will Young also look back at “dream” 3-0 sweep of India

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-2024

“The guys have chipped in at different times, which has been the most important thing” – Tom Latham•BCCI

Captain Tom Latham was “very, very ecstatic” and stated being “a little bit more aggressive with the bat” was one of the reasons behind New Zealand’s historic 3-0 sweep of India, sealed by a 25-run victory in the third Test in Mumbai. That became the first instance of India being whitewashed in a home Test series of at least three games.”We spoke about it after each Test match. We were trying to back it up, and I guess to finally do it here in Mumbai, on a completely different surface, one that would challenge us certainly with bat and ball – yeah, we’re pretty happy,” Latham said at the post-match presentation. “I think just being able to adapt to each ground [gives the most satisfaction].”Latham pointed out to the “all-round, great team effort” which helped New Zealand become the first visiting side to beat India in a series at home in 12 years. While the fast bowlers and Rachin Ravindra set it up in the first Test in Bengaluru, Mitchell Santner’s 13-wicket haul helped then win the series in the second Test in Pune.Related

Vote: The biggest Test series upset of the 21st century

“We wanted to come over here and try to fire a few shots… and I certainly think we’ve done that,” Latham said. “We’ve been a little bit more aggressive with the bat, tried to be a little bit more proactive, and again, with the ball, we’ve tried to keep things simple, understand how India play a little bit, and just try to do our best. The guys have chipped in at different times, which has been the most important thing, and really happy to be standing here in this position.”The win in Mumbai, though, saw another different hero in Ajaz Patel, who bagged 11 wickets in the game after managing just four at an average of 49.25 in three innings before on the tour.”Spin bowling’s a little bit about rhythm, and sometimes when you’re in rhythm, it’s about making the most of it,” Ajaz said after picking up the Player-of-the-Match award in Mumbai, the city of his birth. “And when the conditions present themselves to you, you have to take it by the horns and really do something for your team.”In Mumbai, Ajaz followed a haul of 5 for 103 in the first innings with 6 for 57 in the second. On Sunday, he wiped out most of India’s line-up – from Nos. 3 to 8 – and said that the pitch at the Wankhede Stadium didn’t turn as much in the morning session on day three, even though he had already dismissed Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan and Ravindra Jadeja by lunch.Ajaz Patel took 11 wickets in the Mumbai Test•AFP/Getty Images

“In the period after lunch, it started turning a bit more, so that gave me a bit more confidence to toss it up and use my guile and, I guess, my shape in the air,” Ajaz said. “So, yeah, that’s all I tried to do – make sure I keep it simple, use my shape in the air, and then try and be ahead of the batters.”Despite wickets falling around him, Rishabh Pant kept attacking Ajaz from one end. That made Ajaz bowl much quicker to Pant in comparison to the other India batters, as Ajaz thought “outside the box for him a little bit more”.”I knew that if I just bowled good balls to him, he’s probably going to send them out of the park,” Ajaz said. “So I had to make sure I came up with a new plan and something a little bit different, and try and stay ahead of him.”But before Ajaz, Daryl Mitchell had contributed with a solid 82 in New Zealand’s first-innings total of 235 after they had opted to bat. That was Mitchell’s first half-century on this tour where he had not gone past 20 even once in three innings. Runs apart, Mitchell was a permanent presence for the spinners at slip, where he took eight catches across the three Tests.”It’s something you dream of, and to come over here and actually achieve it, it’s pretty special against a world-class Indian team,” Mitchell told the host broadcaster.Daryl Mitchell and Will Young also starred for New Zealand on the India tour•BCCI

New Zealand had landed in India without Kane Williamson, who missed all three Tests due to injury. But his replacement Will Young tallied 244 runs in the series to take home the Player-of-the-Series award. He started with a composed 48* in the chase in Bengaluru, where New Zealand had lost early wickets, and scored twin half-centuries on a tricky track in Mumbai.”I need to trust my defence, and at times, [it’s about] just being really clear on where I wanted to score,” Young said. “And do it for as long as I possibly can… If I know where I want to score and I can trust my defence, it makes the mind a lot clearer.”But it was Mitchell who summed it up succinctly, as New Zealand toasted the series win, not long after the women’s team lifted the T20 World Cup in the UAE last month.”We’re just a bunch of Kiwis taking on the world, and very proud to represent our country,” he said. “We know how good India are – they’ve got a number of world-class players – and for us, it’s just [about] hanging in there, keep doing what Kiwis do, and yeah, very proud of this group today.”

England seize control in new-ball onslaught as South Africa collapse

Wolvaardt, Luus and Kapp all make fifties but are unable to capitalise

England 395 for 9 dec and 31 for 1 lead South Africa 281 (Wolvaardt 65, Kapp 57, Luus 56, Bell 4-49) by 145 runsLaura Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp and Sune Luus all scored half-centuries but none went on three figures as England took control of the one-off Test in Bloemfontein.Lauren Bell’s career-best 4 for 49, which included the first and second-last wickets of the innings, will steal the headlines but England’s seamers were collectively excellent and well deployed by captain Heather Knight. Lauren Filer operated in short, sharp bursts which allowed her to maintain good pace, debutant Ryana MacDonald-Gay made crucial breakthroughs with the old ball and Nat Sciver-Brunt was typically disciplined as South Africa failed to build on their decent starts.Wolvaardt and Annerie Dercksen put on 92 for the second wicket and Kapp and Luus a South African record 99-run stand for the fourth, but there were no other stands higher than 25. They lost 7 for 44 in 14.4 overs which undid the good work from the first day, when they took 7 for 118 in England’s innings and survived a tricky end-of-day batting period to resume with all ten wickets in hand.England got a breakthrough in the second over when Anneke Bosch played at a Bell delivery on fifth-stump and feathered an edge through to Amy Jones. That brought Dercksen to the crease, promoted to No. 3 after debuting at No. 8 against India earlier in the year, and she was peppered by short balls from Filer, bowling at good pace. The fourth hit her the side of the helmet as she took her eyes off the ball and tried to get out of its way. Dercksen smiled as she was checked for concussion and provided the perfect riposte when she drove Bell through the covers in the next over. When Filer offered that length she got the same response. Wolvaardt meted out similar treatment to bring up South Africa’s fifty in the 14th over.Ryana MacDonald-Gay appeals during her key old-ball spell•ECB/Getty Images

Nat Sciver-Brunt replaced Filer, whose first spell was seven overs long, and Dercksen could relax. She reeled off two strong bottom-handed drives but any level of comfort was short lived. Sciver-Brunt found her edge in the next over but it went wide of the slips and then Sophie Ecclestone took over.At the other end, 20-year old MacDonald-Gay got her first opportunity with the ball and started well, with good shape into the right-hander. She squared Dercksen up in her fifth over, which earned the batter a streaky boundary. Wolvaardt looked far more assured as she pulled MacDonald-Gay through square leg to bring up the partnership fifty and then took the first runs off Ecclestone when she whipped her through midwicket. She brought up her own fifty off 99 balls, her second successive fifty-plus Test score. With 15 minutes to go to the lunch interval, Filer was brought back for a short spell and continued to trouble Dercksen, who top-edged the third ball to fine leg on 33. Bell made good ground but shelled the chance. Three overs later, Filer found the same steep bounce and Dercksen tried to cut but top-edged again. Heather Knight, at second slip, jumped to take the catch and parried to Ecclestone, who held on the rebound. South Africa went to lunch on 113 for 2, having scored 96 runs in the morning session and 282 runs behind.Luus resumed with Wolvaardt post-lunch and started watchfully. It was only when MacDonald-Gay and Filer went short that Wolvaardt and Luus took them on and England rectified their lengths quickly to dry up runs. South Africa scored 25 runs in 50 balls in the second session before Wolvaardt was stuck on the crease and hit on the pads by Ecclestone, who successfully appealed for lbw.Marizanne Kapp batted through the middle session for South Africa•Gallo Images/Getty Images

Wolvaardt immediately indicated she had hit the ball but, with no DRS, could not review. This was the second incident in the match in which South Africa could have benefitted from a referral. On day one, Kapp was convinced she had Tammy Beaumont out lbw off the second ball of the match but was given not out. Umpire Kerrin Klaaste was the decision-maker on both occasions.Kapp had to put that aside when she joined Luus and took on the more aggressive role. She sent Bell through the covers and past point and flicked Ecclestone fine and Charlie Dean through midwicket and, as she found boundaries, Luus allowed herself to play with freedom too. They brought up the South African 200, took on the spinners and then Kapp also blunted Filer before tea to finish a successful session for the home side in which 112 runs came for the loss of only one wicket.Play resumed for the evening session with the floodlights blazing and storm clouds overhead. The atmosphere was ominous and it proved so for Kapp who was bowled by a stunning MacDonald-Gay delivery which held its line, beat the drive and hit the top of off stump. Five balls later, a lightning strike took the players off the field for a further 45 minutes with the new ball six overs away.Lauren Bell was on a hat-trick as South Africa collapsed•ECB/Getty Images

England made one more incision with the old ball when MacDonald-Gay’s discipline paid off and she had Nadine de Klerk caught behind for a duck. South Africa were 237 for 5, eight runs short of the follow-on target of 245. Chloe Tryon took them past that with successive fours off MacDonald-Gay and England took the second new ball as soon as it became available.Filer took it and started with a familiar short-ball tactic but adjusted to a fuller length early on. The first ball of her second over moved off the seam, Luus swung and nicked off. Chloe Tryon hit four fours before she chipped Bell to Beaumont at mid-on in the softest of dismissals and the tail could not have been expected to do much more. Bell bowled Jafta and Mlaba in successive balls after the former didn’t move her feet and the latter backed away and Sciver-Brunt picked up a wicket when Ayanda Hlubi was given out lbw.Wolvaardt used five bowlers to deliver the 14 remaining overs. Kapp and Hlubi opened the bowling and beat the bat several times in the opening exchanges, starting the innings with three consecutive maidens. Hlubi then produced a beauty in her third over, which moved off the seam and took the outside edge as Bouchier became the second batter in women’s Test to score a century and a duck in the same game, after Jan Brittin. Beaumont and Knight saw out the day, growing England’s lead to 145.

Their new Gareth Bale: Spurs submit opening bid to sign £50m star

They might not have an awful lot to show for it, but Tottenham Hotspur have been blessed with an abundance of talented superstars over the years.

The two players who’ll likely stand out in the minds of fans today are probably Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

However, as talented as both of them are and for everything they did for Spurs, particularly in the case of the latter, we reckon the best player to have played for the club over the last two decades was Gareth Bale.

Gareth Bale.

At his peak, the Welshman was utterly unplayable, and while he enjoyed most of his success away from the Premier League, he still managed to score 71 goals and provide 53 assists in 237 appearances for the Lilywhites.

Spurs could do with a player of his ability in their current squad, making reports linking them to someone who could develop into another Bale particularly exciting.

Spurs target their new Bale

There are still a few weeks until the transfer window slams shut, and while it’s not been perfect, it would be fair to say Spurs haven’t had a bad summer thus far.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

They might’ve missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White, but Daniel Levy and Co completed the statement signing of Mohammed Kudus early on, and on top of making Mathys Tel’s move permanent, added another exciting youngster into the mix in Kota Takai.

However, the North Londoners are not done yet, as they now appear to be going after a Premier League ace who could develop into their new Bale.

At least that’s according to a recent report from transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, who has reaffirmed that Spurs are very interested in Savinho.

The Italian journalist goes further than that, though, revealing that the Lilywhites have already made an offer of around €50m – £43m – for the Brazilian, although Manchester City quickly rejected it.

According to other reports, the Citizens would accept a fee of around £50m, and while that’s undoubtedly a lot of money, Savinho could well end up being worth it in the long run, especially as he could be another Bale.

Why Savinho could be Spurs' new Bale

Okay, so before the pitchforks and torches come out, we are not for one second suggesting that Savinho is already at the level that Bale reached at his zenith at Spurs, not even close.

However, there is every chance that the Brazilian could end up having a similar career with the North Londoners, especially when you take into consideration the fact that the Welshman wasn’t exactly a hit from the word go during his time with the club.

One of the key similarities between the players is that they’re both left-footed wide players, and while the City gem spends plenty of time out on the right, he’s also more than capable of playing on the left.

Another key overlap is in how their style, as during his time in North London, the multiple Champions League winner was known for his brilliant ability to beat opposition players with the ball at his feet, either through a burst of pace, or some trickery.

This is something the “unbelievable” 21-year-old, as dubbed by Pep Guardiola, is also capable of doing, and his underlying metrics prove it.

These numbers make it abundantly clear that, like the Wales legend, the São Mateus-born ace is world-class at getting the ball into dangerous areas.

Moreover, while he might not have the goal-scoring numbers just yet, his strike against Juventus in the Club World Cup proves he is capable of producing a wondergoal.

Ultimately, Bale is one of the greatest players to have represented Spurs in the modern era, and while he won’t be at that level right away, Savinho looks like he could become as crucial for Frank and Co.

Romero & Gabriel hybrid: Spurs to bid for £43m titan as soon as "next week"

The international star would be a perfect signing for Spurs and Romero…

Wolves now in pole position to sign "wonderful" in-demand Barcelona gem

With Vitor Pereira aiming to add the final touches to his side before the transfer window slams shut, Wolverhampton Wanderers are now reportedly leading the race to sign a Barcelona gem this month.

Their opening day defeat at the hands of Manchester City highlighted a number of problem areas for Wolves. Whilst there were little expectations against Pep Guardiola’s serial winners who have spent big once again this summer, Pereira’s squad looked alarmingly thin throughout.

Since that defeat, the Midlands club have – to their credit – welcomed Jackson Tchatchoua from Hellas Verona in an attempt to replace Nelson Semedo and hand their backline a much-needed boost. But there’s undoubtedly still work to be done as deadline day approaches.

The defender is keen to get going too, telling Wolves’ official website: “I feel good. I feel happy to be here and I’m excited. I spoke a little bit with the coach, but I’ll speak more. The Premier League is one of my dreams and it’s one step that I want to do in my life, and also the history of the club, the stadium, the fans, this convinced me.”

With a trip to face Bournemouth awaiting this weekend, the new arrival could have the chance to make his Wolves debut just days after putting pen to paper in a game that must see marked improvement from Pereira’s side.

Pereira's very own Neves: Wolves plotting £26m move for "total leader"

ByKelan Sarson Aug 21, 2025

Meanwhile, now that Tchatchoua has officially arrived, Wolves have reportedly turned their attention towards the likes of Girona’s Ladislav Krejci and Christantus Uche. Rumours have even gone as far as to suggest that they’ve made an offer worth £26m to sign Krejci, whilst also setting their sights on another La Liga talent.

Wolves now in pole position to sign Casado

According to Sport Italia journalist Gianluigi Longari, as relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves are now in pole position to sign Marc Casado and are willing to go all out to sign the Barcelona midfielder.

The Spanish giants reportedly value the 21-year-old at just €30m (£26m), sparking a race between Wolves, West Ham United and Bournemouth to secure his signature this month.

In a hectic race which now also includes Marseille, Wolves are reportedly pushing hardest to welcome the young Spaniard in what would hand Pereira an instant upgrade in possession compared to his current options at Molineux.

Although Andre is effective out of possession, Casado would hand Wolves far more control in the middle of the park to almost replicate the job that Ruben Neves did for so many years in the Midlands.

Dubbed a “wonderful talent” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, Casado would be an excellent addition to Pereira’s side. Whether Wolves manage to fend off the competition from both Marseille and their Premier League rivals to sign the Barcelona gem remains to be seen, however.

According to Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, the BCB director, it will be a three-team competition, with each team playing the others twice for a total of six league games followed by the final.”The board has been thinking about the various ways that we can take women’s cricket forward,” Fahim said. “Whether we can do a T20 competition for women was in our thoughts. We have decided today that we will do the Women’s BPL.”Fahim said the BCB is in talks with some of the men’s BPL franchises regarding ownership of the women’s teams, and that a couple of owners have shown interest.”We have already spoken to a few BPL franchises, who have shown interest [in owning women’s teams],” he said. “We want to see how a women’s tournament has an effect on our T20 cricket. We are hopeful that it will help our women’s game progress.”Fahim said that only allow one overseas player will be allowed in the playing XI, with the squads having a maximum of 15 players each.”We won’t take many overseas players due to the financial constraints,” he said. “Four overseas players puts financial pressure on the teams; perhaps they don’t want to take that pressure. We want to give more opportunities to our domestic cricketers. We want to add competitiveness.”It will be the first women’s T20 tournament to be held in Bangladesh. Women cricketers in the country play the one-day league in Dhaka, and the BCB recently launched a women’s three-day competition.
