Rangers: Helander in painkiller admission

Glasgow Rangers defender Filip Helander has admitted that he has been taking painkillers for the last eight years as he has played through injury.

The Lowdown: Helander preparing for Euros

He is now preparing for the European Championship with Sweden after a long season at Ibrox.

The 28-year-old struggled with an injury during the 2019/20 campaign, missing 24 games for the Gers due to a foot issue (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Helander reveals painkillers issue

Speaking on a Swedish podcast prior to Euro 2020, Helander revealed how often he uses painkillers. He said (via Glasgow Live):

“When you hurt yourself, you do not know how bad it will be, but I felt optimistic pretty quickly.

“Now I’m actually not worried at all. The physio feels things have gone much better in recent weeks, I have been able to do a lot. I’m very optimistic I’ll make it.

“We have had ongoing communication with the coaching staff about my progress and of course, they have had contact with Rangers as well.

“It’s the worst thing for a player to be injured. You go to training every day where it feels like you are not getting anywhere. You miss match after match.

“Personally, I have had a lot of injuries. Minor injuries that have taken four to six weeks. It is clearly something you want to get rid of. But all bodies are different. You have to accept it somewhere.

“Very often I have to push myself to play through an injury. I have basically taken tablets before most matches since I was 20.

“Painkillers, although in Italy there were syringes and so on.

“You have to take a risk somewhere and I want to play. You have to trust that it will not make it worse.

“I have no idea if I will have to take them before the Euros. The hope is that I will be so much better that it will not be needed.

“I have been injured before and it has gone well when I came back from it. But you do miss the match tempo when you are out.”

The Verdict: Not good

The £3.15m-valued defender (Transfermarkt) has enjoyed a good spell with the Gers since making the move to Ibrox from Bologna two years ago. Although he has managed just 29 Premiership appearances, he is still to taste defeat in that competition. All in all, he has featured 49 times for Rangers in all competitions.

However, this is hardly good news. This suggests that Helander has been playing through injury for most of his career. At the moment, he is still in his 20s, but taking so many painkillers could well catch up with him. It is something he might want to reconsider if he would like to extend his career.

Fulham snap up Senderos

Fulham have confirmed that defender Philippe Senderos has joined the club from Arsenal after he penned a three-year deal on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a seven-year spell at the Gunners after he made his way to England from Servette in June 2003.

Senderos has made 38 appearances for Switzerland and he is expected to play a leading role for his nation at this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa and, after recent spells with AC Milan and Everton, the towering defender is delighted to have tied up his immediate future.

Speaking to the club's website, he said:"I'm delighted to have finalised my transfer to Fulham earlier today and happy that I am joining the Club during the most successful period in its history.

"I will be looking forward to meeting up with my new teammates and of course, Roy Hodgson, a manager I respect very much, shortly after the World Cup.

"I very much hope that I can contribute over the next few seasons and that the Club goes on to achieve more success."

Krasic restates Juve desire

Serbia midfielder Milos Krasic remains adamant that he wants to join Juventus this summer, despite reported interest from Manchester City.

The 25-year-old playmaker is poised to leave CSKA Moscow, but his final destination has not yet been determined.

Krasic told Serbian newspaper Blic:"I have not decided anything, but my greatest desire is Italy – I feel from the heart an attraction to Juventus.

"I have a contract with CSKA and I expressed a desire to leave. I have already had six years at CSKA and I hope that the leadership of the club will understand.

"I cannot insist on my own conditions, but I told them only that I want to continue my career with Juventus.

Capello in no coach hurry

Fabio Capello will not rush the appointment of an English coach to his backroom staff despite the World Cup failure.

Capello has agreed to add a homegrown coach to his staff following England's disappointing last 16 exit in South Africa.

Stuart Pearce and Ray Clemence are currently the only English coaches employed by the Italian, whose communications skills have been partly blamed for the below-par tournament showing.

Capello agreed to the request following a meeting the Football Association after they decided to retain his services following a brief period of reflection.

But Club England managing director Adrian Bevington has moved swiftly to play down suggestions that the FA are becoming frustrated with a lack of action from Capello.

"Fabio volunteered he wanted another English coach to join his set-up when we met him last week," Bevington told the association's official website.

"We were pleased to hear this as we want to introduce a wider pool of English coaches moving forward.

"Fabio was clear he didn't want us to offer names immediately, instead stressing he wanted more time to consider who it should be, then discuss it in more detail with (director of football development) Sir Trevor Brooking during the first week of August.

"Therefore, any speculation as to who it might be cannot be made with any real conviction.

Holloway in no transfer panic

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway will not rush into making new signings ahead of their first season in the Premier League.

Holloway has revealed he has been inundated with calls and requests from agents to take a look at 'thousands' of players since winning the Championship play-off final in May.

The Seasiders boss has yet to sign any new players but, despite the Premier League season now being just four weeks away, he is refusing to rush his player recruitment programme.

He said:"I'm being serious when I say we've had thousands, not hundreds, of players recommended to us by agents.

"But although I need players, I won't be launching myself into the transfer market and making crazy signings of overpaid and overrated players.

"Everyone else has fallen into that trap but I'm not going to.

Roy Hodgson keen to keep Jamie Carragher

Liverpool stalwart Jamie Carragher will be offered a new contract in the near future, according to Reds boss Roy Hodgson.

The 32-year-old's current Anfield contract expires at the end of this season but Hodgson has no doubts that the one-club man will be offered a new deal once the uncertainty about Liverpool's ownership comes to an end.

"I'm sure it (a contract extension) will be a priority," said Hodgson."Quite frankly so much has happened in the last five weeks, the hours I've spent at the club are enormous, that we haven't actually got round to discussing contracts with players.

"I now know that Carragher has got one year left. That's the only contract of a player that I know about. If you asked me how many years the others have got, I haven't got a clue.

"I can see players like Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard never leaving Liverpool Football Club. I can see them always being part of the club.

"In the same way I'm a bit disappointed that my attempts to bring Sami Hyypia back failed. It only failed because he's so important to Bayer Leverkusen.

"We couldn't get him out of his contract. He's one I would also put in the Jamie Carragher-Steven Gerrard mould, Liverpool for life.

"Unfortunately he was let go at the end of the season before last and we can't get him back. He's too valuable to them."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Would anyone be sad to see the back of Dirk Kuyt?

Depending on who you believe, or perhaps the colour shirt you wear, Holland international Dirk Kuyt is either one of the most under-rated players in the Premier League or a poor forward who was converted into a hard-working right-midfielder to fill a hole in the Liverpool starting XI.

Certainly a player who was a permanent fixture in a Holland side that navigated their way to the World Cup Final this summer must be doing something right. Unfortunately Kuyt’s disciplined and regulated approach along the touchline has failed to capture the imagination of Reds fans during his time at the club. While his hard labour doesn’t go unnoticed, many fans would prefer to see a more natural option on the right-side of the Liverpool midfield.

Offensive wingers were all the rage when Liverpool last won the league title in 1989-90. A 26-year-old John Barnes scored an astonishing 22-league goals from midfield as The Reds secured their joint-record 18th league title. Since then, the club’s affiliation with flying wingers, much like its rate of collecting trophies, has severely diminished.

Attacking wingers were synonymous with the success of LFC throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s. Jamaican-born Barnes was among the best of them, terrifying defenders in a sea of red with his electric acceleration, dazzling skills and mazy runs.

Under Benitez however it was his side’s chronic lack of width which came to symbolise the Spaniard’s failure to deliver a side capable of unlocking the league’s most stubborn defences. Particularly during the 2008-09 season when 11 draws ended the club’s slim title chances. Benitez’s persistence in continuing to play Dutchman Kuyt on the right-wing after his arrival in 2006 was systematic of this.

After bagging an impressive 71 goals in 101 appearances for Dutch side Feyenoord, few had predicted Kuyt would spend the next four years chasing lost causes and tracking back on the right-hand side of the Liverpool midfield. Converted from a leading marksman in his native Holland to a makeshift winger with a one-in-four ratio at Anfield, Kuyt had to adapt his game to fit into the Benitez’s side.

Kuyt is clearly not your stereotypical touchline speedster and his lack of pace, guile and creativity can often leave Reds fans frustrated. The 30-year-old’s industry and application along the touchline is unmatched however and this supplements somewhat for what he lacks in inventiveness.

It has been reported Spanish boss Benitez is keen on a reunion with his former charge at the San Siro with Inter Milan. The Italian side have reportedly offered Liverpool £7.5m for the player’s services, with 23-year-old Nigeria striker Victor Obinna moving in the opposite direction as a make-weight in the deal. While Obinna is highly-rated, does Hodgson really want a player deemed not good enough to cut it at Inter? Liverpool would prefer a straight cash deal and an offer of £12m plus for an aging player would be a good piece of business by Roy Hodgson.

The deal is an interesting one for Liverpool’s new manager to consider and it could well be time for the Merseysiders to finally ditch their aging proverbial workhorse. Liverpool are simply not going to win a major honour with a player of Kuyt’s limited quality on the wing. Kuyt is certainly open to the idea of a reunion with Benitez, revealing:

“On Thursday night, during the Europa League game against Trabzonspor, the board of Liverpool informed me officially that they have received a fax from Inter.

“You can call this a luxury situation for me now.”

The former Utrecht player certainly gets his fair share of goals and assists but to start challenging again Liverpool need to change their style of play and address their lack of width and Kuyt should be the first to go.

Denilson: Arsenal can still win Premier League title

Arsenal midfielder Denilson has come out fighting following a disappointing weekend result after claiming the Gunners can still win the Premier League title.

Arsene Wenger's side conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to draw 1-1 with Sunderland on Saturday evening.

They are already four points adrift of Chelsea following the champions' 100 per cent start to the new season.

However, Denilson insists the title is very much still within reach for the north London club, who are unbeaten following five rounds of Premier League games.

"I still think we can win the Premier league this season," he told the club's official website.

"We are in a very good position. We have to keep the unbeaten run going as long as we can.

"It has been a long time since we have won the league and I believe this season we will win some trophies.

The unlikely HERO in Liverpool’s sorry saga

Just last month, the face of Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton was emblazoned on a banner held aloft from the Kop entitled, ‘Plague, Famine, War and Death- Four liars of the apocalypse’.

Ironically, the former British Airways chairman ultimately played a major part in saving Liverpool from this ‘apocalypse’ after fulfilling his mandate to find a buyer for the ailing club last week. In striking a £300m buyout deal with Red Sox owner John W.Henry, and his investment firm New England Sports Ventures, Broughton has given the club every chance to re-build its standing and reputation at the top of the English game.

By forcing Tom Hicks and George Gillett out of the club, Broughton has endeared himself to the Liverpool fans who have been desperate for a change of ownership. Jubilant fans sang, ‘We love you Martin, we do’ on the steps of London’s High Court on Wednesday, as the Americans frantic, final attempts to hang onto the club were nearly extinguished. The aforementioned banner has also now been retired too. You may argue that Broughton was simply doing his job; however you cannot deny that he has done it extremely well.

Initially accused by Reds supporters as being a stooge, or a puppet, for reviled owners Gillett and Hicks, Broughton found it difficult to win trust amongst the Anfield faithful. As a season ticket holder at Chelsea, fans were also worried that his Blue allegiance would compromise his position as the club’s chairman. Yet they needn’t have worried.

The 63-year-old was appointed in April after being recommended by Wall Street banker Michael Klein, a close acquaintance of the Americans. The appointment of Broughton as an independent Chairman was fundamental to the sale process, giving the search for a new owner credibility, with Hicks and Gillett’s reputation in tatters. If the duo thought they would still be able to influence the new man in the boardroom then they couldn’t have been more mistaken.

It was Broughton’s insistence to put a clause in his contract, allowing him to have the casting vote on any takeover which has been key. While another clause was also inserted to prevent Hicks and Gillett from blocking a sale. Both these passages in Broughton’s contract stood up in the High Court on Wednesday and were key components in Mr Justice Floyd’s emphatic ruling against the owners.

Since agreeing the club’s sale, Broughton has refused to back down despite intense and relentless pressure from Hicks and Gillett. He also responded to criticism over his lack of interaction with the club’s fans throughout the sale process in a candidly open and revealing interview with the BBC last week. He rightly believed that a running commentary on the sale would have only been detrimental to the club’s chances of securing a buyer. Broughton came across as intelligent and honest in that interview, something he has backed up in his actions over the last week.

Of course, it remains too early to judge if Broughton has made the right decision and secured the best deal in choosing NESV’s offer for the club. Yet there is no denying he pulled off a masterstroke in finally disposing of Hicks and Gillett with some shrewd business acumen. While on the surface, the choice of Henry appears to be ideal given his track record in upturning the fortunes of the Boston Red Sox.

I personally feel that the club would do well to retain the services of Broughton with a new era in the club’s history around the corner. However other Kopites will want all connections with the Hicks and Gillett era to be completely removed from the club.

Which ever way you feel, Broughton has done his job well and delivered the new owners he promised. And for that we should thank him.

Steve Round confident of Everton upturn

Everton assistant manager Steve Round has every confidence that the Toffees will recover from a slow start to the season and end in a position towards the top end of the Premier League table.

Round's side have won just once in their opening seven league games, with a Merseyside derby at home to fellow strugglers Liverpool next on the agenda.

He told the Daily Post:"We are not happy with where we are and we began addressing that against Birmingham.

"The team are determined to continue that and the players still believe they can finish in the upper echelons of this division.

"The improved result and level of performance from Birmingham has to continue against Liverpool and if we can do that, then I have every confidence we can go on a great run and end up very high in the table.
