Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill is backing Rangers signing Jordan Jones to be a hit at Ibrox this season, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s he said?

Jones has featured in Northern Ireland’s last four qualifying matches, so O’Neill is clearly a fan of the new Gers man’s talents.

The former Kilmarnock star joined on a free transfer this summer after signing a pre-contract with the club in January.

O’Neill is now backing his player to excel at club level, believing he can have the kind of crowd-pleasing impact that players such as Ryan Kent and Daniel Candeias have delivered over the last 12 months.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the 49-year-old said:

“When you sign a player from Kilmarnock on a free transfer, he maybe doesn’t have the profile of some other players.

“But Rangers may be pleasantly surprised in what they have got in Jordan.

“He has made a big impact in a short space of time and I have a feeling he is someone who will be around the international team for a long time to come.

“The early European games will be good for Jordan because the opposition won’t be as tough.

“He will get the Rangers fans off their seats. I watched a lot of Rangers last season and I saw how the fans react when Ryan Kent or Daniel Candeias get on the ball. Jordan is a player who brings that excitement.”

Improvement needed

Jones plays on the left win so will certainly be eyeing making Kent’s spot last season his own this term.

However, if he’s to be a big hit with Rangers fans then he needs to up his attacking output from his last few seasons at Rugby Park.

The winger has never scored more than four goals in a single season in Scottish football, netting just 11 in 119 appearances for Killie.

His assist record hasn’t been much more impressive, creating 22 in three seasons, but only four last term.

If he is to win a regular place in Steven Gerrard’s side he will need to up that considerably even if his style of play, as O’Neill claims, is easy on the eye and exciting for supporters.

Reports from Football Insider on Thursday stated that Marcelo Bielsa is at loggerheads with the higher-ups at Leeds United due to the timing of the club’s pre-season tour in Australia.

Of course, travelling to the other side of the world less than a month before your season gets started isn’t ideal, but the Argentine has known about this for months now, so he needs to just get on with it.

We’ve all known that Leeds were heading down under since November last year, and Bielsa seemed quite happy with the arrangement back then.

“I am pleased that we have been given the opportunity to take the team over to Australia to help us prepare for the 2019/20 season,” the Argentine said.

It’s understandable that any football manager wouldn’t be happy with his squad travelling such a distance so close to the start of the season, but in this case, Bielsa has no grounds to be kicking off with people in charge at the club.

Causing a stir achieves nothing, Leeds will be going to Australia no matter what, and the reported problems have seemingly reached the press which could cause further strain on the relationship between Bielsa and club officials.

The 63-year-old would have been better off just biting his tongue and getting on with it while making it clear that he doesn’t want the same situation to arise next season.

Managers can sometimes get lost with what’s happening on the pitch, but the directors know what’s best for commercial gains and a tour of Australia could bring in a wealth of new supporters which could provide the club with a financial boost.

With Leeds’ apparent struggles with FFP compliance, this tour could be vital in terms of extra income, and while it may cause problems with fatigue, Bielsa’s complaints won’t change anything.

Whether Zaha arrives at Goodison Park remains to be seen, but the Merseyside club’s fans have been on social media discussing a potential move.

Arsenal’s move for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney is in doubt due to a chronic injury, per The Sun.

What’s the word?

Tierney, per the report, is wanted by the Gunners and has been chased by Unai Emery all summer.

The north London club had wanted to pay £20m for the defender in instalments.

But Lennon has revealed that he remains injured, with The Sun claiming he feels pain in his stomach and groin whenever he kicks a ball and could miss up to eight weeks of action.

He said: “He’s still injured and he’s rehabbing.

“He had a double hernia and he still has the Osteitis pubis problem so it’s a slow burner that one.”

Accordingly, it’s alleged that Tierney’s injury problems could put the end to a summer switch to the Emirates.

A major blow

This will come as a significant blow to Emery’s transfer plans.

A move for Tierney would have strengthened the club’s full-back ranks but there does not appear to be much point in the club signing a player who is injured.

The Gunners have done some good business already this summer, most notably the club-record acquisition of Nicolas Pepe from Lille, but Tierney would have been the icing on the cake.

Now, though, it appears the club may have to alter their plans; they still need a full-back to serve as a long-term replacement to 33-year-old Nacho Monreal.

Sead Kolasinac, meanwhile, was mainly utilised as a wing-back last season.

Arsenal now have to make a decision: either they bide their time and come back in for Tierney down the line, or they simply shelve plans to buy him and chase someone else.
