Carlo Ancelotti dealt Everton nightmare by Rodriguez’s “worst” Colombia display

Carlo Ancelotti has been dealt a nightmare by James Rodriguez, after the Everton midfielder endured “by far” the “worst match” of his international career as Colombia were humiliated 6-1 by Ecuador on Tuesday night.

Rodriguez featured for the full 90 minutes at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado to earn his 80th senior cap, but again failed to impress after lacking his usual magic in Friday’s defeat at home to Uruguay.

Yet his performance against Uruguay paled into insignificance compared to his efforts against Ecuador, with Colombian outlet El Tiempo describing the 29-year-old’s display as “by far” the poorest he has ever produced on the international stage, leading to questions over what the former Real Madrid maestro actually brought to the side.

“He had already come from not weighing in the match against Uruguay, but this may be his worst match with the Colombian National Team by far,” they claim. “He only appeared to collect the penalty that meant the partial 4-1.

“What is James’ problem? He does not adapt to the system, he does not weigh, he does not feel.”

El Tiempo thought so poorly of Rodriguez’s performance that he was only awarded a three out of 10 rating, despite ending a 12-game goal drought with his side’s late first-half penalty that offered Colombia hope of a second-half comeback.

Ancelotti would have been hopeful of seeing an individual comeback from Rodriguez after his torrid performance against Uruguay, with the £90,000-per-week midfielder entering the international break on the wrong foot after asking to be substituted in defeat to Manchester United.

“He was OK, he was tired,” the Italian said following the 3-1 loss, via quotes by the Liverpool Echo. “This week he did 80-minutes and he asked me to change it because he was tired but no physical problem.”

Rodriguez has been struggling for form in recent weeks following the testicular injury sustained in contact with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk during October’s Merseyside Derby, which ruled the two-time Champions League winner out of Everton’s 2-1 defeat at Newcastle after passing a late fitness test to face Southampton.

He returned to the starting line-up against Manchester United, but again failed to register a goal or an assist to extend his run without scoring to three Premier League appearances and two without creating a goal, having struck thrice and assisted thrice in his first five outings.

Rodriguez finally scored again for Colombia in their brutal drubbing by Ecuador when he converted the 45th-minute penalty, while registering three key balls without creating a big chance, misplacing five of his seven crosses, eight of his 29 total passes and only attempting one dribble, per SofaScore.

While the talented 29-year-old beat his marker with his only dribble of the game, Rodriguez further lost four of his six ground duels and did not contend any aerial battles, lost possession 16 times, committed one foul and was dribbled past twice without offering any tackles, interceptions or clearances.

Ancelotti’s major concern will be to what extent playing 180-minutes in four days will have on Rodriguez, given his state when leaving Everton for international duty in south America, but also the level he was able to bring to the field once again.

AND in other news, Carlo Ancelotti appears set for disappointment with a “great striker” overlooking Everton’s interest.

Albian Ajeti: West Ham hit gold shifting “intelligent” gem to Celtic this summer

West Ham United hit gold by shifting Albian Ajeti this summer, with the forward’s early-season blitz now turning into a total collapse with Scottish Premiership powerhouse Celtic.

What’s the word?

Irons boss David Moyes marked Ajeti as one of the expensive duds signed by Manuel Pellegrini who were up for grabs early on this summer, as the Scottish coach sought to stamp his own mark in east London.

While Andriy Yarmolenko ultimately stayed and Felipe Anderson only joined FC Porto on a season-long loan in October, West Ham were able to find a suitor willing to buy Ajeti in Celtic, who agreed to pay £4.5million for the Switzerland international.

Ajeti had failed to score in any of his 12 Hammers appearances during a year at the London Stadium, having been signed from Basel for £8m after netting 21 goals and registering 11 assists in 43 games the season prior.

The 23-year-old penned a four-year contract at Parkhead upon his unveiling as a Celtic recruit, where boss Neil Lennon lauded Ajeti as being “strong, technically good, intelligent and a very good finisher”.

Lennon initially saw his words proven on the pitch with Ajeti striking five goals in his opening six Premiership appearances, seemingly taking to Scottish football like a duck to water.

Early blitz to early collapse

Had Ajeti kept up his initial form, West Ham’s decision to sell the striker for near-on half what they paid just 12-months before could have haunted co-owner and chairman David Sullivan.

However, Sullivan’s decision to write off the losses and bite the bullet this summer has provento be a masterstroke as Ajeti’s early blitz has turned into a total collapse, with no goals in any competition since netting at home to Hibernian in September.

Ajeti has been a regular under Lennon this term with six starts in 10 Premiership appearances, two in four Europa League Group Stage outings and minutes in the SFA Cup plus the qualifying stages of the Champions League and Europa League.

Lennon is only seeing an average 0.7 shots, 0.5 successful dribbles, 1.8 duels won and 8.1 accurate passes per Premiership game from the 11-cap centre-forward, though, per SofaScore.

His appearances total more minutes (685) than he ever achieved with West Ham (400) despite only joining Celtic in August, but Ajeti’s output north of the border will no longer cause any restless nights in east London.

AND in other news, a pundit has exclusively claimed a 26-year-old ace would have been a “very good” West Ham signing.

Hugo Lloris: Tottenham goalkeeper in talks to sign new contract

Paulo Gazzaniga’s future at Tottenham Hotspur may be over with reports the north London side are working on a new contract for club captain Hugo Lloris.

What’s the word?

According to Fabrizio Romano, while speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Spurs have opened talks with France international Lloris to extend his future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium beyond 2022.

Lloris moved to north London from Olympique Lyonnais in 2012 for £11.9million and has been a mainstay ever since with 337 appearances across all competitions, in which the 33-year-old has kept 115 clean sheets.

The Spurs captain is a favourite of current boss Jose Mourinho, who has opted for the 120-cap international for all bar one available Premier League fixtures since Lloris made his return from a dislocated elbow in January.

Lloris currently has a year-and-a-half remaining on his £100,000-per-week terms, but Tottenham hope to extend the shot-stopper’s stay at the club alongside working on new terms for star forward Heung-min Son.

Forcing Gazzaniga out

Lloris extending his terms at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium beyond his 35th birthday could spell the end for Gazzaniga in north London, amid reports the outcast Argentine is a January target for Everton.

The Goodison Park natives are believed to be monitoring the situations of Gazzaniga, Dele Alli and Harry Winks ahead of potential deals for the trio this winter, as Carlo Ancelotti strives to improve his ranks on the cheap.

Gazzaniga is yet to feature in any competition this term after Mourinho opted to omit the 28-year-old from his Europa League and Premier League squads, a choice the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss accepted was a difficult decision.

“It is very difficult, to leave a player out is like to stop the player to fight for something he wants, that is always is very, very hard,” Mourinho said, via quotes by football.london.

“The good thing is in January you can change, so if you have a different view you change. The Gazzaniga situation, with Hugo and Joe [Hart] we believe that for the next couple of months we can do it with an academy goalkeeper, with a young English kid.”

Tottenham were open to parting ways with the 6 foot 5 Gazzaniga this summer, who was a target for London rivals Fulham, but ultimately failed to offload the £3.6m-rated ‘keeper.

With Mourinho also happy to utilise an academy player to offer depth behind Lloris and Hart, it is not hard to imagine the Portuguese again looking to offload Gazzaniga in January should firm interest surface in the man Darren Bent felt failed to earn the number one jersey last season.

“He’s got some time, Gazzaniga, [and made] a great save from the penalty [against Watford] but I think he had that initial boost, he’s been really, really solid since Lloris has been out until a couple of weeks ago,” Bent told Football Insider.

“He tried to carve someone in half [vs Chelsea]. I guess he’s had moments where you’d thought: ‘What a very, very good goalkeeper, he could take Lloris’ spot,’ but I don’t think he’s been consistent enough in the longer period to warrant everyone saying he’s got to be their number one.”

But just a year on from those claims, Gazzaniga is out in the cold and unlikely to be offered a route back into a side belonging once again to Lloris.

AND in other news, Daniel Levy can complete Jose Mourinho’s dream Spurs unit in a £22m gem who’s “like Kai Havertz”.
