Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Arsenal are interested in signing Brighton starlet Tariq Lamptey.

What’s the story?

The Gunners have got a big question mark over the long-term future of current first-choice right-back Hector Bellerin, with reports in recent days and weeks suggesting that the Spaniard could be set for an exit from the Emirates this summer.

Now, Romano has claimed that Mikel Arteta’s side have got their eyes set on Lamptey. Speaking on The Here We Go podcast, he said (via afcstuff): “For sure, next summer, can happen something big for him. Arsenal are looking at him as a possible option at right-back. Keep an eye on Arsenal because they are among the clubs interested in Lamptey.

“There is still nothing advanced, there is still nothing signed. Nothing serious yet, but they’re looking at him, he’s on the list, he’s considered an interesting player, so Arsenal will decide the future in the coming months.”

Perfect for Arteta

The £16.2m-rated Lamptey appears to be the perfect full-back/wing-back for Arteta, with his pace and ability to beat players on the ball something that Kieran Tierney provides on the opposite flank.

Described as “unbelievably quick”, Lamptey has scored once and provided three assists in just 11 games this season, including setting up goals against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United.

His teammate at Brighton, Dan Burn, raved about his ability, saying: “I’ve hated playing against him, because I’ve played at left-back quite a bit in training and he’s been at right-back and I can’t catch him!

“He’s got such a low centre of gravity, it’s hard to knock him off the ball, take the ball off him. You don’t see many people take the ball past him either. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him but I expect big things.”

If Arteta is looking for a player to come in and nail down that starting right-back slot, then Lamptey seems perfect for him given all the tools that he has in his locker and because he certainly has the time to develop further at a bigger side than Brighton.

Ao GloboEsporte.com, o diretor executivo do Grêmio, Rui Costa, disse que desconhece qualquer proposta pelo atacante. وأضاف: “لقد بدأوا هذا الموسم في ذيل الترتيب، لكنهم حظوا ببعض الراحة ولمدة 6 أيام بعد مباراة نورويتش سيتي ويومان فقط لنا لذلك كنا متعبين، لقد كان من الصعب علينا العودة لقد استنفذت طاقات اللاعبين، نحن لسنا فريقًا يسجل في الدقيقة 90 أو في الوقت الإضافي، لا أتذكر متى آخر مرة فعلنا ذلك ربما قبل عامين أو ثلاثة أعوام مع رحيم ستيرلينج ضد ساوثهامبتون”.

According to a West Ham United source, speaking to Football Insider, star striker Michail Antonio looks set to make his decision on switching international allegiances to Jamaica at the end of the season – with the 30-year-old currently wanting to focus on the Premier League campaign.

Antonio, who has debatably been one of the Hammers’ most important players this season when available, has been at the centre of reports linking him with representing the Reggae Boyz at international level.

Fans have often expressed their concern that Antonio’s injury problems could be exacerbated by regular trips across the Atlantic for international breaks, feeling his final decision could have a big impact on his availability for the Irons.

Antonio looks set for end of season decision

A claim by the Telegraph last month emerged detailing that Antonio looked certain to turn out for Jamaica in their quest to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, with the country’s Football Federation wanting him in the squad for qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico in September.

Football Insider have now provided this latest update as a Hammers source tells the outlet that Antonio is going to delay his call until the end of the campaign.

It is relayed by the outlet that Antonio is ‘passionate’ about turning out for Jamaica given he is yet to receive his first international cap for England.

Transfer Tavern take

Former Three Lions boss Sam Allardyce has called him up to the squad before, as well as Gareth Southgate, but with no appearances to date.

Described as ‘frightening’ by Harry Redknapp on Sky Sports (via the Boot Room) earlier this season, one could argue that Antonio has been unfortunate to miss out on a first cap so far.

Time will tell exactly when this decision will be at the end of the campaign, but the reports could suggest he is more likely to opt for Jamaica.

A report by 90min earlier this week claimed that Newcastle United face a global battle to sign Hatayspor’s highly in-demand striker Aaron Boupendza, who can be Steve Bruce’s upgrade on soon-to-be free agent Dwight Gayle.

Boupendza is understood to be a target for almost half of the Premier League, with as many as eight clubs tracking the 24-year-old’s remarkable progress during his maiden Super Lig campaign.

The forward has netted 18 goals in 26 Turkish top-flight outings to date, having only been signed on a free transfer last summer when FC Girondins de Bordeaux called time on his spell in Ligue 1 with him having failed to make a single appearance in four years at the club.

Boupendza has been a huge hit for Hatayspor with no player scoring more often in the Super Lig this term – Besiktas’ Vincent Aboubakar is second with 15 goals in 24 games – and offering a joint league-high 38% contribution of his side’s efforts so far.

Performing at such a level is said to have Hatayspor eying a quick payday, having raised their valuation of the 15-cap Gabon international to £8.5m after recently accepting a £7m offer from FC Krasnodar, only for Boupendza to reject the transfer.

The forward allegedly snubbed a move to Russia as he is keen to test himself in the Premier League, where scouts from Southampton have regularly cast their verdict on Ralph Hasenhuttl’s potential heir to Danny Ings.

Talent spotters for Newcastle, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also thought to be interested, while joined by Scottish powerhouse duo Rangers and Celtic.

Fenerbahce have been credited with interest in Boupendza previously, though Hatayspor President Lutfu Savas told Radyospor earlier this month that his side currently has no agreement in place with the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium outfit.

Newcastle could look to step up their interest in the CF Mounana product ahead of the next transfer window, with Bruce currently set to lose Gayle and Andy Carroll with both centre-forwards due to be free agents at the end of June.

Newcastle have set a mid-May deadline for a decision to be made on retaining Carroll past his current terms, while the forward is keen to earn a new deal and extend his second spell at St. James’ Park into at least a third season, per Chronicle Live.

Gayle is also open to staying on Tyneside beyond his current contract but will not be short of suitors if the offer does not fall on the table, with Galatasaray said to be eying a potential reunion for the striker with DeAndre Yedlin at the Turk Telekom Stadium.

Bruce can allow Gayle to walk out the door and seal a move to the Super Lig giants if he is set to welcome Boupendza to the Premier League, as the Hatayspor forward would provide the Toon boss with an upgrade in his attacking ranks.

Boupendza would not be considered a replacement for the 6 ft 4 Carroll but rather the 5 ft 8 Gayle, as the 5 ft 10 Gabon international would offer Bruce the mobility to be played across the forward line rather than as an out-and-out target man.

Boupendza has struck 12 of his 18 goals for the Super Lig season from 15 outings on the left-wing – where Gayle started and struggled against Aston Villa last Friday – along with providing three in five games on the right and three in six through the middle.

Gayle has only provided Newcastle with 11 goals in 66 Premier League games since moving to the north east from Crystal Palace for £10m in 2016, while Carroll has found the back of the net just once in 41 outings across all competitions since returning to United in 2019.

Newcastle may be expected to operate on a strict budget in the summer due to the loss of revenue from fixtures being held behind closed doors, but splashing a bit of whatever budget there is on Boupendza seems a smart way for Bruce to go.

The writing is on the wall for Newcastle United. Fail to sack Steve Bruce, and relegation will surely be on the cards.

This Magpies team looks like a torrid group; they look defeated, bullied to within an inch of their lives.

Their style of football is shoddy and there are very few signs of fight from those in the St James’ Park camp. Their 3-0 defeat to fellow relegation candidates Brighton on Saturday evening just about summed things up.

They were toothless in attack and filled with mistakes in defence. Once again, the prime candidate was Joelinton.

The big Brazilian set the tone just 21 minutes in. Martin Dubravaka launched the ball forward in the direction of Joelinton. The striker got his head to the ball but planted it straight out of play for a throw-in.

If anything summed up his time in the north-east that was it. To be completely blunt, the attacker has been one of the worst signings in Premier League history.

Signed from Hoffenheim for £40m, he penned a six-year deal with Newcastle. It was not only a club-record deal, but also Bruce’s record deal. Unfortunately, he is costing the manager his job.

The forward has found the net on just seven occasions and has three top-flight goals to his name since the summer of 2019. To suggest his time in England has been poor, therefore, would be putting it lightly.

Perhaps one of his worst performances in a black and white shirt came on Saturday. Joelinton was utterly anonymous in attack and made fewer passes (16) and fewer touches (34) than Dubravka in the Magpies goal. The Slovakian had 45 touches and made 24 passes in comparison.

He endured a torrid evening on the south coast, losing possession of the ball on 15 occasions and taking just one touch in the opposition penalty area. Joelinton also failed to have a single shot at goal.

For a normal footballer that makes for pretty grim reading. However, when you cost £40m, it only looks even worse.

He hasn’t scored since the back end of November and worryingly, his performances are getting worse.

In a relegation six-pointer, he should be one of the players standing up and taking the game by the scruff of the neck. Unfortunately, that’s very rarely happened during his feeble stay at Newcastle.

Judging by his attitude and form, it would be an almighty surprise to watch him see out the six years he signed on for. Joelinton epitomises the sinking ship of Newcastle right now.
