Pollock sets the pace as South Africa take grip on second Test

For much of the festive season the South African have been wondering out loud what it might be like to be play on an authentic home pitch

Peter Robinson02-Jan-2001For much of the festive season the South African have been wondering out loud what it might be like to be play on an authentic home pitch. They found out on the first day of the second Castle Lager/MTN Test match against Sri Lanka at Newlands on Tuesday. On a pitch that offered more pace and bounce than any South African Test wicket this summer, Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 95 with South Africa fashioning 130 for two in reply before stumps.Shaun Pollock took six for 30. He had very good reason to be pleased with the way things went."The best thing I did was lose the toss," he said afterwards. "We always thought there would be a bit of bounce and that was what assisted us. All we did was use the swing up front and there was a bit of away movement and a bit of bounce and carry and I think, not having played on too many of those wickets this season, from our batting point of view the guys came in and said they’d had a workout. They hadn’t had balls coming on to them like that for some time."A bit of a workout it might have been for the South African batsmen, but it was doubly so for Sri Lanka. From the start of the tour the Sri Lankans have talked about adjusting to the bounce of the South African wickets. At Kingsmead they didn’t have to worry about it. At Newlands, however, the chickens came home to roost. But to attribute the Sri Lankan collapse entirely to the pitch would be unfair to the South Africans who bowled and caught superbly. Pollock, in particular, was quite magnificent.Although he is the slowest of the four South African seamers employed on Tuesday, his eyes lit up at a pitch that gave something back to him. He had a purple patch at the starting of the Sri Lankan innings, taking four for none in the space of 13 balls as the visitors slipped to 13 for four and he twice pinged a Sri Lankan helmet, something he hasn’t done for quite a while.Pollock had a beautiful away shape going that accounted for Marvan Atapattu, Mahela Jayawardene and, coming in to the left-hander, Russel Arnold. He also slid one across Sanath Jayasuriya to once again sent the Sri Lankan captain packing cheaply and played a part in getting rid of Avishka Gunawardene, unsettling the batsman with a bouncer that rattled the earpiece. Mfuneko Ngam picked up the wicket in the following over.Ngam does not have anything like Pollock’s control, but he is quick and none of the tourists enjoyed facing him. He claimed three wickets after lunch, including that of Kumar Sangakkara who, alone among the Sri Lankans, seemed to have the stomach for it and although he is likely to drop out when Allan Donald returns, he has already demonstrated that he can fit in at this level. That there were runs in the pitch was shown when South Africa batted, but not before Herschelle Gibbs’ return to the crease. With all the talk of whether he should or should not be playing, it was almost inevitable that his return would be extraordinary. It was, but it lasted only two balls. One of the South African selectors has privately justified Gibbs’ return on the perfectly legitimate grounds that his ban was for six months, not six months and a couple of days or another Test match. In the end the 13 000 at Newlands saw Gibbs go tamely, pushing tentatively at Chaminda Vaas to be caught at the wicket. He was, however, fortunate in that his return was largely overshadowed by South Africa having such a good day.Gary Kirsten, dropped in the gully on 36 by Jayasuriya, helped himself to 52, Jacques Kallis ended the day one short of 50 and Daryll Cullinan looked in ominous nick on one of his favourite grounds. It is difficult to see how Sri Lanka can drag themselves back into this match. However well they bowl, they will have to hope South Africa make a mess of an excellent position. And even then, the confidence of their batsmen has quite clearly been undermined. Their tour has reached critical mass.

AVFC: Fans react to Emiliano Martinez injury

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez had to be stretchered off the pitch late on Tuesday evening while on international duty with Argentina.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans shared their concern regarding the 28-year-old on social media.

The shot-stopper made the move to Villa Park last summer and kept 15 clean sheets in his debut season and was also named as Villa’s Supporters’ Player of the Season.

Martinez lost consciousness in Argentina’s 2-2 World Cup qualifier with Colombia following a collision with Everton’s Yerry Mina.

The Villa number one landed heavily after colliding with Mina and slammed the back of his head and neck against the pitch on landing.

Martinez had lengthy treatment before being replaced by FC Porto’s Agustin Marchesin, however, he has since reassured supporters his injury was nothing serious.

Patron's Trophy Grade II: PWD lift Trophy in the rain-affected Final

Bazid Khan hit a magnificent 121 to help Public Works Department lift the Patron’ s Trophy in the rain-affected final played against Sui Gas at the Lahore Cricket Association ground, Lahore

Mahmood Ahmad31-Mar-2001Bazid Khan hit a magnificent 121 to help Public Works Department lift the Patron’ s Trophy in the rain-affected final played against Sui Gas at the Lahore Cricket Association ground, Lahore. The last two days of this four-day encounter were completely washed out due to the rain, which started on the evening of the second day, and due to its ferocity, ensured that PWD take the trophy on the basis of first innings lead.Bazid, the son of former Pakistan captain, Majid Khan, drafted his innings with utter prudence as he played the bowling on merit. He was, however, was not alone in his efforts. First, it was Shahzad Malik, at the opener’s slot, who led his side out of danger after Zahid Ghouri had lost his wicket with only two on the board. Shahzad added 47 for the second wicket with Imran Khan Jnr (31 off 29 balls) and then 81 for the third wicket with Bazid before being out at the individual score of 60, which contained 6 fours.Still it was Bazid upon whom the PWD innings revolved. He faced 186 ball during his stay at the crease and hit 7 fours and one six to help his side surpass the opposition’s first innings score of 285 in 90 overs. After losing five wickets for 186, PWD looked in earnest danger of going down the drain. However, Bazid had some other ideas. He joined hands with his captain, Saad Wasim, to carry the score close to 285. Bazid completed his century in the process with the help of five fours. The highlight of his innings, however, were the ground strokes that the played with fluency and ease to all parts of the ground. He did not lose his concentration until after making 121 when, in an attempt to hoist Hafeez out of the ground, he gave a simple stumping chance to the wicket keeper.Bilal, meanwhile, carried on the good work. He completed his fifty just after the team had crossed the 285-run mark. He was out after making a fine 59 (118 ball), at the total of 314. PWD reached 318 for nine in their first innings quota of 90 overs, thus, taking a handy first innings lead.Earlier, Sui Gas, the winners of the round robin league, posted 285 on the board after being put into bat by the opposition. The main architect of their innings was the left-handed stylish opener, Ali Hussain.Ali played a flawless innings as he added 104 for the first wicket with Mohammad Hafeez (32). After losing the wicket of their captain’s wicket early, he took the score to 170 along with Sohail Idrees (49). And when it looked that their team would post a big total on the board, he just lost his concentration. Trying to heave one out of the ground, he spooned a simple catch to the man at short fine leg. He made 102, which contained 15 fours and a mighty six that disappeared behind the parapet fencing the eastern part of the ground. The fall of Ali’s wicket triggered a mini collapse in which Sui Gas lost three wickets for 24 runs. There was a slight respite for them in the form of a 56-run partnership between Kashif Nizami (20) and Saleem Mughal (59). However, wickets just began to tumble after that. This procession did not end until the last wicket fell in the 88th over. Saleem was the last man out, as he became one of the Fahim Ahmed’s three victims. Mansoor also bowled well for PWD bagging three wickets for 69.Sui Gas had only one ball in their second innings when heavens opened up in Lahore, and thus, rendered impossible the remaining of the match.

South Africa slump in Tour opener against a Busta Cup XI

South Africa slumped to 271/9 at the end of day one in their warm upfixture against the West Indies Busta XI at the Everest Club in Georgetown,Guyana

MWP04-Mar-2001South Africa slumped to 271/9 at the end of day one in their warm upfixture against the West Indies Busta XI at the Everest Club in Georgetown,Guyana. The Busta XI is made up of the best of the region’s young playersnot representing Guyana and Jamaica in the Busta International Shield final.South Africa lost their last four wickets for just 51 runs whichincluded some big blows by number eleven Makhaya Ntini. SA’s first testagainst the West Indies begins Friday at the nearby Bourda ground.Mervyn Dillon made a successful comeback to competitive cricket aftermissing the end of the Australian tour through injury. His 18 overs costjust 31 runs and he took the wicket of SA’s topscorer Mark Boucher (56). Theleft arm spin pairing of Barbados’ Ryan Hinds (3/48 in 19) and the LeewardsIslands Sulieman Benn did the damage for the Busta XI as they shared fivewickets.Ntini’s cavalier cameo entertained the good crowd as he dropped to oneknee to smash 24 off just 14 balls. Of the top order batsmen, only Boucherplayed fluently and he made the young West Indies team regret dropping himon ten as he hit six boundaries and a massive six off the hard-working Bennwho finished with 2/77.SA openers Herschelle Gibbs (36) and Gary Kirsten (21) added exactly 50for the first wicket. Gibbs followed a fine lofted drive with a mistimed cutoff Benn while Kirsten pushed a drive to cover off the tight bowling ofKerry Jeremy. Jacques Kallis and Daryll Cullinan (20) added 58 for the thirdwicket before Cullinan was also caught at cover. Kallis struggled with histiming and batted just seven minutes short of three hours for 45. He took aheavy blow to the finger off Ricky Christopher. Kallis finally fell sweepingHinds. Lance Klusener hit four good boundaries in his 27 before he top edgeda pull off the accurate Ricky Christopher. The Leeward Islands pairing of Christopher and Kerry Jeremy sustained adisciplined line throughout the day and might have expected a better reward.Jeremy had Kirsten dropped by Daren Ganga in his first spell. He took 1/40in 15 overs while Christopher’s figures were 16 overs, 2/62.

Wolves transfer update on Corona

Many Wolves fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Jesus Corona.

As per Correio da Manha (via Sport Witness), the Midlands club are eyeing up a move to sign the FC Porto ace, with Chelsea, Everton, Sevilla and Fiorentina also interested in securing his services.

His release clause is decreasing down from €30m (£25.9m) to a mere €20m (£17.3m) at the end of June, and the Molineux faithful can take advantage of this under new manager Bruno Lage.

Corona has come off of the back of a very good 2020/21 season, making no fewer than 16 goal contributions in total in 48 matches across all competitions (Transfermarkt), a very respectable average of a goal or an assist every three games.

The Mexico international also created as many as 15 big chances for his teammates in the Portuguese top flight, as he also won five of his duels a game and averaged 2.3 key passes and 1.8 successful dribbles per match (Sofascore).

Bajan version of West Indies

Oh dear, what can the matter be

Haydn Gill11-Feb-2002Oh dear, what can the matter be?For a nation which boasts of a rich cricketing tradition, Barbados are seemingly quickly trying to establish the same dubious records that the West Indies have set in recent years, especially on overseas tours.Seven hours after the West Indies sank to their 24th defeat in their last 27 Tests outside of the Caribbean, Barbados succumbed to a second successive Busta Cup defeat here yesterday in a match they subsided for less than 180 in either innings.Statisticians will have to turn back the pages several years to find such an instance. They will also have a hard time finding an occurrence of Barbados losing two successive first-class matches in the same season. And this defeat, inside three days, follows that against the Windward Islands last weekend when they were beaten by a team that had not toppled them at this level in 19 years.Over the last three days at Sabina Park, it was clear why the defending Cup champions were a distant second to Jamaica, the reigning Shield champions. We didn’t apply ourselves, captain Philo Wallace said after Barbados had crashed to their lowest total of the season in an innings that lasted only three-and-a half-hours and 46.3 overs. We played the extra batsman and it didn’t work and I think we are still searching for the right combinations to come up with the results we are looking for.Barbados, faced with a first innings deficit of 172 after enjoying a good first session in which they took Jamaica’s last six wickets for 75, were undone by a combination of disciplined bowling, a few rash strokes and maybe a couple of decisions at which they showed their displeasure.Kurt Wilkinson hit the topscore of 35 before he went in bizarre circumstances, while Sulieman Benn weighed in with 32 not out, but there was little else from anyone. This Barbados team, missing the experience and skill of some of their leading batsmen for varying reasons, depends heavily on Wallace, but even before the bowlers could remove their boots, he was heading back to the pavilion for a fifth-ball duck. For the second time in the match, the Barbados captain was undone by a peach of a delivery, one of fullish length from Laurie Williams which dipped and swung through the air at the last moment. We have young, inexperienced batsmen who are still learning the trade and we have three senior players. I am one at the top. I didn’t get any runs in this game, so I, too, have to take some responsibility for not getting among the runs, Wallace said.At the end of the day, we didn’t bat particularly well and we are still not taking wickets at the rate that I would like.Williams, who was given a rare chance to use the new ball, also responded by gaining the wicket of Wallace’s opening partner Shirley Clarke, lbw on the back foot to a break-back.With Wallace out of the way, Barbados would have been relying on Floyd Reifer and Courtney Browne to carry the fight, but once both were despatched within an hour-and-a-quarter after lunch, it was obvious the match would not go into the fourth day.Reifer fell to a loose stroke from a loose ball in the first over of a new spell from Darren Powell. A ball wide of off stump induced Reifer into an attempted cut which he edged to the keeper.Browne was prised out by a big inswinging yorker from Jermaine Lawson, but he might have done better had he attempted to block it rather than play the off-drive he inside-edged into his stumps. It was not yet 2 p.m. and the die had been cast.Barbados, 60 for four, rapidly deteriorated to 85 for eight in the first completed over after tea.Dwayne Smith succumbed to another soft stroke, providing a return catch to Gareth Breese, but poor Kurt Wilkinson could not be faulted for his freak dismissal. He flicked Breese into the chin of Leon Garrick at forward short-leg and the alert wicket-keeper Keith Hibbert dived to take the rebound. There was, however, a feeling in some quarters that the ball might have struck the turf before it hit Garrick.A hobbling Martin Nurse came out just before tea with an injured hamstring, but lasted only one ball which he prodded to silly-point to complete a disastrous match in which he bagged a pair. His injury seems almost certain to rule him out of Barbados’ fourth round match against Trinidad and Tobago, starting Friday in Port-of-Spain.Both Ryan Austin and Ian Bradshaw went the run-out route. In the morning period, Barbados were finally rewarded for their persistence of the previous day when they made early inroads into Jamaica’s batting.Tino Best, wicketless in an impressive six-over burst on Saturday when the Jamaicans in the stands were urging him on, suffered from early blows before claiming four wickets with awesome pace. Two of those scalps were catches courtesy of substitute Antonio Thomas. The first, which accounted for Breese, was at third man from an upper-cut, and the second, from Robert Samuels’ top-edged hook, was a spectacular effort, hauled in inches from the ground with a despairing dive after running in from the long-leg fence.
