Leeds United could sign Marcelo Bielsa’s new Alexis Sanchez in Arnaut Danjuma.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that the Bournemouth star has caught the eye of several Premier League clubs, including the Whites, although it will take a significant offer for the Cherries to let the £13.5m-rated flier leave.

While Sanchez’s career may have tailed off in recent years, he was in fine fettle under Bielsa when the duo worked together at international level with Chile between 2007 and 2011 – it was a relationship which even saw the now 32-year-old pay big respect to the current Leeds manager.

He said: “I learned a lot from him and it is because of him that I am who I am. What I remember the most about Bielsa was the mentality that he tries his players to have.”

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sanchez’s former teammate at Arsenal, raved after a superb free-kick from the Chilean against Southampton: “It’s moments of brilliance like that (which show his quality) but at the same time he works harder than I think I’ve seen anyone work. He is so skilful but he also does the defensive work up front and sets the tone.”

Sanchez’s combination of pace, eye for goal and work-rate is something very much similar to Danjuma, with the Cherries speedster banging in 17 goals and providing another eight assists in all competitions last season.

Speaking on The Official EFL Podcast, former Cherries boss Jonathan Woodgate said: “He’s an exceptional player, in a really good place at the minute, Arnie. He’s another one who I’ve always done a lot of work on him at his previous clubs, so I knew all about him coming into this role, I knew what type of player he was.

“He made an unbelievable run for one of the goals, I showed him that, but then I showed him what he did winning the ball back, when he had to sprint 50 yards and get the ball back. That’s what makes a really good player, for me, getting that work rate in because we know, with the ball his feet, he’s a top player. Can he do the rest going the other way? And he’s starting to show that now, so yeah, he’s doing well.”

Given that quality and energy, Leeds could sign Bielsa a new Sanchez with whom to work, a decade after he worked with the Inter Milan ace.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing this “complete” star as a Nahitan Nandez alternative…

Celtic have held talks over a possible loan move for Manchester City defender Ko Itakura, according to Express Sport reporter Ryan Taylor.

Itakura, primarily a centre-back who can also play as a holding midfielder, joined City back in 2019 from Kawasaki Frontale in a deal worth £990,000.

Since then, the 24-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan with FC Groningen, making 59 appearances for the Dutch side.

Itakura’s Etihad deal still has 12 months left to run, with his Transfermarkt valuation now the highest it has ever been at £3.15m.

The Japan international is currently at the Olympics, and it seems as if the Hoops have taken the first steps over a potential move for the 6ft 1 defender.

The Latest: Talks held

According to Taylor on Tuesday, Celtic have held discussions with City over a loan move.

The Premier League champions don’t see Itakura in their immediate plans, with Taylor claiming that Ange Postecoglou would love to bring the defender to Parkhead.

City are demanding a substantial loan fee for Itakura, though, which could force Celtic into looking elsewhere for reinforcements unless the Premier League champions are willing to negotiate.

The Verdict: City relationship to pay off?

Celtic appear to have built a strong relationship with Manchester City in recent years after signing the likes of Olivier Ntcham and Jeremie Frimpong.

The relationship between the two clubs could potentially help the Hoops when it comes to lowering any loan fee for Itakura.

Initial talks have been held, so it will be interesting to see if a move goes further or if Celtic decide to look elsewhere.

After going down in the first Test at Lord’s, the Indians came back with a bang, winning at Headingley and drawing the other two Tests to level the series. They returned with heads held high, but few heads would have been held higher than Rahul Dravid’s.The Karnataka middle-order batsman chalked up 602 runs from four Tests at a better-than-Bradman average of 100.33. Naturally, then, he appeared relaxed, and smiled ear-to-ear as he said, “There is a case for me to carry those wickets wherever I go. I enjoy touring there; it is a great place to tour and play cricket. This just shows in my performance.” It certainly does. In Tests in England, Dravid has scored 789 runs at an average of almost 88.For the other run-machine in the Indian team, Sachin Tendulkar, the tour was important too. It was there that he crossed Sir Don Bradman’s tally of 30 Test centuries. “We won the NatWest Series and after being 1-0 down we fought back well later on. The way Dravid batted in the last Test was so good.
