No último lance, Brenner voltou a perder gol fácil.

Passado o susto, o Colorado voltou a mandar no jogo.

Stanford millions cause England tension

Allen Stanford may be forced to consider scrapping the winner-takes-all element of his $20million Twenty20 match

Cricinfo staff19-May-2008The England & Wales Cricket Board has denied that Allen Stanford’s plan for an annual US$20million Twenty20 fixture is in jeopardy because of rifts within the England camp, but the proposal has caused tensions nonetheless, with the breakdown of the prize pool becoming a major talking-point among the squad members.According to the , the players are worried about the blame implications of losing such a significant sum of money to the West Indies XI through – for example – a misfield, which could ultimately impact on team cohesion. Potential rifts and injury concerns are also a factor in their resisting even an alternative idea that every player in the game is paid a £500,000 appearance fee.Of the 12 England players with central contracts, six are not currently involved in the Twenty20 format – including the Test captain, Michael Vaughan, who was quizzed on the subject during his close-of-play press conference at Lord’s on Sunday evening. England’s back-room staff would also feel entitled to a cut of the winnings, but as yet there is no consensus as to how best this could be done.”Like most things in life, it’s got to be fair,” said England’s coach, Peter Moores. “If it’s fair, people will be fine with it. If it’s deemed to be unfair, it’ll cause its own dramas.””We welcome Sir Allen Stanford’s interest in English cricket and the opportunities it presents, however, we are focussed on the current series with New Zealand,” said a statement on behalf of the England players. “We are confident that the ECB and PCA will manage any and all of the players’ issues on our behalf which are presenting great opportunities for cricket and its players.”The ECB hope to be able to announce the precise details of the agreement by early next week, with each player on the winning side is expected to pocket US$1million.

Rangers tipped to sign Gary Cahill

Rangers have been linked with a move for Gary Cahill recently and former Gers defender Graham Roberts has tipped him to be a success under Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

What’s the word?

According to The Sun, Rangers are keen on adding the 35-year-old to their squad this summer, and he is available on a free transfer after leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

Although Gerrard is well-stocked in the centre-back department, the former Chelsea man would add a wealth of Premier League and Champions League experience at Ibrox, and would surely be a leader both on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Roberts spoke to Football Transfer Tavern recently and suggested that Cahill could be an excellent acquisition for the Gers, saying:

“It would be a good move for him. They need a bit of experience there, he’s a free agent, so to go and play in the Scottish Premiership, he would.

“They have a young side, but if you’ve got an experienced centre-half at the back he could be the orchestrator. I think that would be a great move for him, and he would be great for the squad.”

Should Rangers sign Cahill?

It might seem strange to claim that Gerrard needs to strengthen his defence this summer after Rangers conceded just 13 goals in 38 league games last season, but signing Cahill on a free transfer looks to be a no-brainer.

Despite his age, he was a regular in Crystal Palace’s side last term, making 20 appearances in the Premier League and averaging a solid 6.57 rating from WhoScored for his performances. He ranked second for clearances and successful aerial duels per game in the Eagles’ squad, emphasising the value he brought to the team.

Although he might struggle to break up Connor Goldson and Filip Helander’s firm partnership at the back, Rangers will be looking to improve their performances in domestic cup competitions this season, and Cahill could add some serious quality in depth.

The “exceptionally good” defender, as hailed by former Palace manager Roy Hodgson, could also be signed with the view to him performing a similar role to Jermain Defoe in the future, whereby he can feature in the occasional match but play a huge part behind the scenes in terms of coaching and in the dressing room, which would surely be appreciated by Gerrard.

Therefore, Wilson should definitely look to bring the former England defender to Ibrox this summer, as he could prove to be a very shrewd addition to Gerrard’s squad.

Gayle happy with mature approach

Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, believes a more mature outlook from his developing squad was responsible for their competitive efforts against Australia over the past three Tests

Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, believes a more mature outlook from his developing squad was responsible for the competitive efforts against Australia over the past three Tests. Australia won the series 2-0 but they were strongly challenged by an improving West Indies, who pushed all three matches to the fifth day and looked far better than their No. 8 world ranking.”The guys are really enjoying their cricket and they’re becoming more mature and so on, so hopefully we can continue in the same vein,” Gayle said. “We played good cricket right throughout the series but unfortunately we came out the losing side.”The result was confirmed on the final day in Barbados, where his men were pursuing a daunting 475 for victory, which was 57 runs greater than the highest successful run chase ever achieved in Tests. Gayle said West Indies genuinely felt they had a chance when Dwayne Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were building a 122-run stand.”It was a good game today,” Gayle said. “I can’t fault the guys for the effort they’ve put in today, to put on 380 runs is pretty good but unfortunately we lost. We knew that it was not going to be easy, someone had to get a big hundred which we didn’t get in this game.”A key moment came when Chanderpaul was lbw for 50 and it was only the third time Australia had managed to dismiss him during the three Tests. Despite the loss, Chanderpaul was pleased with the side’s resolve throughout the series.”We’re playing the No. 1 team in the world, we’re ranking No. 8 right now and nobody expected the game to go to a fifth day and all the games so far went to the fifth day,” Chanderpaul said. “It’s pretty well done on our behalf and I must commend the guys for the effort they’ve put in.”Chanderpaul said the side was not helped by the lack of a big group of senior players. “It is hard at times because you have a bunch of young guys, and they are learning, but they are learning slowly,” Chanderpaul told AFP.”When I came into the team, I had a bunch of senior fellows around – men who played their cricket tough – so it was easy for me to learn from them, but we have a whole heap of young guys and there are not a lot of senior players to guide them. But we are trying to mould them, and they are learning, but they are not learning fast enough, because at this level you need to learn fast.”He said the only way to fill the West Indies stadiums, which were empty for much of the series, was to win consistently. “In the Caribbean, we have a way of being negative,” he said. “Sometimes we can be very negative, rather than positive and looking for ways to try to help each other.”We are down. We are not the team we had in the past. We do not have the big names. We are not dominating. We are ranked at No. 8. We need help and we need the public to support us, and help us all the way.”

Leeds: Phil Hay on Lewis O’Brien links

Leeds United are indeed keen on signing Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien, according to reliable reporter Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: O’Brien links

Alan Nixon of The Sun stated on Sunday that talks regarding a move for the 22-year-old intensified over the weekend, with Leeds needing to pay £10m for the central midfielder.

O’Brien is thought to be keen to make the move across Yorkshire if a fee can be agreed, with a central midfielder a ‘priority’ for the Whites this summer.

The Latest: Hay confirms

Hay shared a transfer mailbag on The Athletic on Wednesday morning.

Within his report, he spoke out on the failed move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who opted to join Crystal Palace before revealing that ‘the links to Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien are true’ – a significant nine-word admission.

Hay added that Marcelo Bielsa was at Huddersfield’s Carabao Cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, where O’Brien scored the winning penalty for the Terriers past former Whites goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

The reliable reporter admitted that a possible move is one to keep a close eye on, although a transfer hasn’t progressed towards completion so far.

The Verdict: Bielsa knows best

If Bielsa liked what he saw in O’Brien over the weekend and wants the club to secure his services, then Leeds should do everything they can to grant the manager’s wish, even if it means forking out £10m.

That figure for a player who has never turned out in the Premier League and has 12, possibly 24, months remaining on his Huddersfield deal seems extreme, but the Whites are running out of time to bring in midfield reinforcements with the transfer window closing at the end of this month.

We’ve seen what Bielsa can do with players who are not exactly household names, such as last season’s Player of the Year Stuart Dallas, so bringing in O’Brien – who can play as a central or attacking midfielder – could prove a smart piece of business in the long run.

Leeds: Diego Llorente injury ‘a big blow’

Danny Mills reckons that the injury-enforced absence of Diego Llorente will hurt Leeds United at the start of the 2021/22 season.

Mills, who played for the Whites between 1999 and 2004, was speaking to Football Insider about the 27-year-old.

The lowdown

Llorente was forced off midway through the first half of a friendly against Real Betis at the end of July, and a source close to the player has said that he faces two to three weeks out with a leg muscle injury.

While the problem is ‘not major’, it could rule Llorente out of Leeds’ clashes with Manchester United and Everton later this month.

The Spaniard struggled with injuries during his maiden season in Yorkshire, missing 13 games with groin issues and a further month with a hamstring problem (via Transfermarkt). He was limited to 14 Premier League starts, averaging 2.2 successful aerial duels, 2.3 tackles and 2.5 clearances per game (via WhoScored).

The latest

Mills is not only fearful of the immediate impact of Llorente’s absence, but also of the long-term repercussions of an early lay-off.

“It is a big blow,” he said to Football Insider. “He’s a real quality player that holds that team together.

“It looks like he’s going to miss the start of the season which is a strange situation.

“He needs to get fit and play in a run of games. We’ve seen before once the season gets underway and you’re playing catch up trying to play your way fit without a proper pre-season it’s tough and really difficult to do.”

The verdict

When Llorente’s injuries abated in the latter part of last season, he enjoyed a fine run of form and grew in stature. The 27-year-old even earned a spot in WhoScored’s Team of the Month for April.

However, availability is just as important as ability and this is a stinging setback for the Whites. It’s a small problem, yes, but it doesn’t bode particularly well for the season ahead, and as Mills notes, it has interrupted the process of ramping up to full fitness.

In the short term, it could well make Leeds’ tough early assignments even trickier.

In other news, Leeds have tabled a offer for this centre-forward target.

Symonds unsure over safety in Pakistan

Andrew Symonds, the Australian allrounder, is not yet convinced about players’ safety in Pakistan, the venue of the Champions Trophy in September

Andrew Symonds, the Australian allrounder, is not yet convinced about players’ safety in Pakistan, the venue of the Champions Trophy in September. Symonds had expressed reservations ahead of Australia’s scheduled tour to Pakistan earlier this year, which was postponed.Although Pakistan recently hosted the Asia Cup concerns have grown following attacks in Islamabad, the capital, and in the port city of Karachi the last week.”My feelings haven’t changed a great deal,” Symonds said on his arrival from the West Indies. “I don’t mind the odd game of cricket for Australia, but it is only a game at the end of the day, and putting yourself in a position where you’re not safe, to me is ridiculous.”Symonds’ opinion, though, was in complete contrast to fellow Queensland allrounder Shane Watson. “Personally, I’d go anywhere, I’ll play anywhere, I just want to play for my country,” Watson said. The ODI series in the West Indies marked Watson’s comeback to the team after more than a year, and he’s ready to play for Australia anywhere.”That’s what I’ve worked so hard for, the injuries I’ve had, pretty up and down times over the last year, so I’d do anything to play for my country so wherever we have to go, I’ll go.”Michael Clarke, who captained Australia in Ricky Ponting’s absence for the final two ODIs, declined to comment, leaving the issue to the game’s administrators. Clarke said he would wait to hear what Cricket Australia, the Australian Cricketers’ Association and the International Cricket Council decided on the issue.Ponting had indicated last month players were still uneasy over touring Pakistan last month. Cricket Australia is expected to take a decision within two weeks, while the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) chief executive Paul Marsh said decision will not be made before it get reports from its security experts and the Federation of International Cricket Associations. The ICC is yet to make its final decision on Pakistan conducting the tournament. Sri Lanka is the alternate host for the Champions Trophy, but South Africa have also been tipped as a replacement.Australia are drawn in a pool comprising India, Pakistan and the West Indies, and are scheduled to play their first match against India in Lahore on September 13. Symonds, Clarke and Watson have been named in Australia’s their preliminary 30-man squad for the tournament.

E lá a gente é sempre maltratado – completou.
