Liverpool fans delighted for Harvey Elliott

A number of Liverpool supporters are delighted for Harvey Elliott after the Reds youngster received his first call-up to England’s Under-21 squad.

The 18-year-old has made a hugely impressive start to the season, having returned from his loan spell at Blackburn Rovers.

Elliott produced an excellent performance in Liverpool’s 2-0 win at home to Burnley last Saturday, in what was his first Premier League start for the club, suggesting he could be a regular throughout the campaign.

The midfielder’s performances have been rewarded with a call-up for England’s Under-21s, receiving the honour for the first time in his career. Curtis Jones is also included in the squad.

It further suggests that Elliott has a massive future ahead of him, with a place in the senior side surely only a formality in the future, such is his talent.

'I can't be running after every record ' – Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar speaks at a press conference after going past Brian Lara to become the leading run-getter in Tests

Cricinfo staff17-Oct-2008Sachin speakOn the journey:
Success is a process and during that journey sometimes there are stones thrown at you and you convert them into milestones. It’s a great feeling. On how long he thinks he can keep the record:
I don’t what is going to happen in future. I started as a 16-year-old, without any such targets. There might be another 16-year-old, who might not be having any targets and who knows where he is going to go.On the pressure:
“To be honest, I was not under any pressure for this record. I knew that I have to go out and play my game. It will come at some stage. There was no burden as such. Today I decided just to watch the ball as closely as possibly.”On the sparse crowd to witness the record-breaking run:
“I did not feel anything about the poor crowd attendance. It’s about quality not quantity. I got a fantastic reception in a pleasing moment. I appreciate it every applaud whichever came in my way I take it wholeheartedly.”On the missing World Cup:
“That is something I would like to have. We were close to it in 2003. It was so close yet so far. I’m not looking that far ahead [2011]. I just want go out and enjoy myself and my game and not think of any targets. If it there is in the vicinity I will focus on it. Right now I want to enjoy myself.”On getting there in Mohali:
“I always wanted to do it in front of the home crowd and I’m quite happy that an Indian has achieved that record. It is not my record, it is India’s record. I’m happy it has been done here.”On his family not being there at the ground:
“It is not my family style to go over at the top. I know they will be extremely happy.” It was about 15 minutes into Sachin Tendulkar’s press conference. He had answered wide-ranging questions, not all pertaining to the match or his record. Before the next question came his way, the media coordinator asked him if he would like to continue. Tendulkar moved away from the mike, and although he could not be heard, it seemed he said something to the effect of “Why not?” The press conference continued for the next 11 minutes, way longer than the ones at the end of a day’s play.Tendulkar was in that kind of mood. He looked animated, spoke in three languages – English, Hindi and Marathi – and looked relieved and happy, and was subtly funny. He started off by admitting that although the record was not a big distraction, the anticipation around it did mean something. “During all the talk about the record, I concentrated on how to score runs for the team, but everybody I used to meet would talk about only one thing. Now that it is done, I know I wouldn’t be asked the same question again and again.”On a personal level, he doesn’t have a “what next” now? “I started as a 16-year-old, and there was no targets then,” he said. “I just wanted to go enjoy every moment. That is what I like to continue with – not to think of too many things and complicate my game in the process.”I have not played for records. I can’t be running after every record [answering a query about breaking Brian Lara’s 400]. I would be looking after what the team needs. The team obviously needs it. If it comes my way, I will take it. If it doesn’t come, there will be no regrets.”Despite that attitude there must have been moments when he would have realised he could end up the leading run-getter in both Tests and ODIs. “As the career progresses, there is sub-consciousness mind starts thinking about it,” he said. “You know that people start talking about it the records. That is how you are aware of all these things.”There have been occasions that I didn’t know how many runs I needed [to get to the record]. A couple of team-mates did not believe. I was willing to swear on anyone that I don’t know. That is when they believed. The beauty is just to go out and play, and while doing that the records were meant to be broken and various milestones achieved.”What was he thinking when it happened? The steer towards the third-man boundary that got him past Brian Lara? “When I looked up, obviously I had two thoughts in my mind,” he said. “One was I thanked the almighty and the second, I thanked my father. Today I miss him. He would definitely be a proud man, and I just thought of him.”Sourav Ganguly was a special partner to have when the record happened. He reminded Tendulkar of the fact that he was his partner when Tendulkar got his 35th century. “If you can remember that in the middle of all that …”He also dedicated the record to Ramakant Achrekar, his childhood coach, his family who have been by his side “whether or not he did well”, and especially “my mother”.Almost in paternal manner, he subtly put his critics in their place. “I don’t need to prove anything to anyone,” he said. “I have been around for 19 years, and those 19 years I did not play cricket to prove anything to anyone, whether it was first year of my cricket or 10th, or 15th, or 19th.”I’m not here to answer to what x, y and z is writing or saying about me. It is their opinions, and I don’t take all those opinions seriously … But sometimes I don’t know how they can figure out what’s going on in my mind when sometimes I myself can’t figure that out.”That was the only time he sounded mildly sour, but only mildly. The talk eventually went back to the celebration when he got the record. “The duration [of the fireworks] was bit worrying.” When a journalist informed him they had planned 11,954 crackers, he said, “Eventually I figured out it was 11,954 crackers or something like that.”

Tottenham Hotspur: Lilywhites face competition for Ilaix Moriba

Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Barcelona wonderkid Ilaix Moriba, as rival interest from RB Leipzig has emerged this weekend [Sunday Express].

The Lowdown: Moriba at the centre of a contract wrangle at the Camp Nou

No stranger to the limelight, Moriba has become something of a thorn in the side of the Barcelona hierarchy after failing to sign a new contract at the Catalan giants this summer [GOAL].

He has allegedly asked for around £100k-p/w to renew terms, angering Camp Nou chiefs and eventually being frozen out of their squad [Sport Bible].

The youngster is regarded as one of the most prodigious talents to come through the famed La Masia academy in a long time, once even labelled ‘the future of the club’ by Ronald Koeman [GOAL].

However, that future may lay elsewhere.

The Latest: Future set to be decided in the next 24 hours

Tottenham are set to find out the trajectory of the 6 foot 1 ace’s next move in the next 24 hours, with his current employers open to cashing in on his services due to their financial difficulties [Sunday Express].

RB Leipzig are also hot on his tail, potentially creating a problem for the Lilywhites due to the German outfit’s reputation of offering regular first-team football to young stars.

Though they are reportedly £5 million short of matching the valuation set by Barca, the Bundesliga side are said to have offered tempting personal terms which Spurs would be unable to match.

The Verdict: Tottenham should prioritise Moriba

Likely to cost a pretty penny in terms of wage expenditure, any advancement in Tottenham’s willingness to lure the 18-year-old to N17 should be on the premise that he features regularly in a senior environment.

Bringing a bustling presence in the midfield, the Guinean-born anchor man showcased his capabilities effortlessly last term, registering four goal contributions from 18 appearances from deep; one goal and three assists [Transfermarkt].

Backing up plaudits, his successful pass accuracy rate of 91.6% across the campaign would help to bring some control to the Spurs midfield, potentially being a vital asset in high-profile encounters [WhoScored].

He was once dubbed as ‘incredible’ by ex Barca B coach Garcia Pimenta, and surely improve further with more first XI exposure [SB Nation].

Should they be able to offer Moriba the guarantees of being an imminently important figure in their starting line-up, there is no reason why Tottenham should not look to close the deal and add another future midfield star to the signing of Pape Matar Sarr.

Pietersen defends selection continuity

Kevin Pietersen backed England’s team selection in spite of another heavy defeat in the second ODI against India at Indore

Kevin Pietersen backed England’s team selection in spite of another heavy defeat in the second ODI against India at Indore, and preferred to concentrate on the fact that their 54-run defeat was a marked improvement on the 158-run drubbing they endured in the series opener at Rajkot on Friday.Despite attracting some criticism for a lop-sided line-up, which includes Ravi Bopara as a non-bowling option at No. 8, and the part-time spin of Samit Patel at No. 7, Pietersen was adamant that continuity was the secret to success.”I didn’t want to change the side, I wanted to give the guys the confidence to know that they could turn things around,” he said. “You could say conditions favoured them and if we’d bowled second then it might have been different, but the team we went in with, we thought could win this fixture and be more competitive, and we were today.”England enjoyed a flying start to the match when Stuart Broad reduced India to 29 for 3, and they were still in the reckoning while Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff were taking 59 runs from the final five-over Powerplay. But once again, the difference between the sides was Yuvraj Singh, who followed up his second century of the series with figures for 4 for 28.”We’ve made marked improvements from the first game, when we were totally outplayed and were out of it from 30 overs onwards,” said Pietersen. “We certainly got a good start here today, but we probably weren’t aggressive and didn’t carry that through and we probably thought it would just happen for us, which is a mistake of ours.”When asked what England could do to stop India’s matchwinner, Pietersen joked: “I’m going to take Yuvraj out at the hotel tonight and make sure he doesn’t come to Kanpur. The bowlers tried their hearts out and the batters definitely gave us a good run but we needed someone to get a big score like Yuvraj did.”While England ponder the problems posed by Yuvraj, they will not have been heartened by the comments of his team-mate, Yusuf Pathan, whose 50 from 29 balls helped hoist India to a formidable total of 292 for 9. “We find it difficult bowling to [Yuvi] in the nets so we’re just the same as England,” he said. “But we’re not going to give them any tips on it.”

Celtic: Robbie Brady set for Gaziantep move

Celtic-linked free agent Robbie Brady is set for a surprise move to Turkish side Gaziantep, Lancashire Live report.

The Lowdown: Celtic rumours

Brady was linked with a move to Parkhead back in February when Neil Lennon was still in charge of Celtic.

Rumours of the Republic of Ireland international moving to Scotland re-emerged at the end of May after he left Burnley.

Ange Postecoglou was quizzed specifically on bringing Brady to the club, but as we know, the left-midfielder wasn’t one of 12 Celtic signings.

The Latest: Turkey move

Lancashire Live shared a story on Brady on Wednesday, claiming the winger is close to a move to Gaziantep.

The Super Lig side boasts a number of international footballers in their squad, and it is believed Brady would be viewed as a marquee signing, should a move go through.

The Verdict: Not a major blow for Celtic

Celtic brought in plenty of attacking talent in Kyogo Furuhashi, Liel Abada, Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis, so missing out on Brady shouldn’t be an issue.

He could’ve brought plenty of experience to the Hoops, however, Postecoglou did just that with Joe Hart and James McCarthy joining.

The 35-goal free agent now looks as if he is heading to Turkey, though, and it’s not as if Celtic haven’t had the chance to act, so we suspect Dominic McKay and Postecoglou decided the aforementioned names are better options.

In other news: Another Celtic summer signing, as well as Urhoghide, isn’t impressing under Ange, says Devlin.

Graham Smyth makes Leeds claim on McCalmont

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth has dropped an intriguing claim on Leeds United loanee Alfie McCalmont, even making some comparisons between him and Arsenal star Ben White.

What’s the story?

The 21-year-old McCalmont has joined League One side Morecambe on a season-long loan after spending the previous campaign in League Two with Oldham, and Smyth has now suggested that if he wants to make his mark on Marcelo Bielsa’s team in the years to come, he will have his work cut out.

He said: “You can never rule anything out, but he’ll have to do what Ben White did and show he can handle the step up to L1 with real comfort, having done well in L2. Leeds would have listened to permanent offers this summer though so he has his work cut out. Lots of potential I think.”

Fans will be intrigued

The midfielder was in impressive form for Oldham last season, scoring ten goals in 41 games in all competitions, and providing a further five assists too, being a key reason behind why they avoided relegation to non-league.

After seeing him make waves at Boundary Park, former Leeds man Noel Whelan waxed lyrical about the midfielder, saying: “He is a player that is immensely talented and he will do very well for Oldham. The way he plays the game is very intelligent.

“This is not a loan with a view to a permanent move from Leeds, this is a learning process. You have to be mentally tough to go out on loan, especially in League Two because it is more direct and robust compared to what you would get in the Premier League and Championship. He will be learning a lot about his game.”

And, speaking after he saw the 21-year-old put pen to paper on a new long-term deal to stay at Elland Road, Whelan insisted that Bielsa should be looking to utilise him more often.

He said: “A very good player, great on the ball and a good football mind. He is one that is learning his trade from watching Kalvin and being in and around that first-team setup.

“It is important that these young lads are integrated. It is vital for their progression and to give them confidence to step in when needed because there will be injuries and suspensions. Use them – that is why you have an academy and youth policy.”

Another season away out on loan, this time at Morecambe, will stand the youngster in good stead and if he performs well, he could give Bielsa another option in the middle of the park next season.

Leeds fans will be intrigued to see if McCalmont does indeed show shades of White and come through the divisions to eventually make his mark at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Victor Orta delivered a Leeds masterclass…
