India rise to third after England victories

Third-placed India have moved to within a fraction of a ratings point of South Africa in second position on the ICC ODI Championship table, following their 5-0 thrashing of England last month

Cricinfo staff01-Dec-2008Third-placed India have moved to within a fraction of a ratings point of South Africa in second position on the ICC ODI Championship table, following their 5-0 thrashing of England last month. With the postponement of the final two ODIs in the series, India lost the chance to go second on the table but they nevertheless gained four ratings points and now sit on 119, the same number as South Africa but behind them when the points are calculated beyond the decimal point. One more win for India would have put them into second position but it wasn’t to be and they will now have to wait until their next series for the opportunity to make further inroads.England, on the other hand, have suffered the effects of that comprehensive series defeat. Having themselves had a chance to go second in the table last summer, they are now down to sixth, having lost five ratings points. Sri Lanka, in sixth place, are only one point adrift after being Zimbabwe 5-0.Despite being competitive in several of those games, Zimbabwe lost further ground to Ireland in 10th position and are now only two ratings points in front of Kenya in 12th.Australia remain on top of the table and with Test cricket set to dominate the international schedule for the next few weeks, that situation is not likely to change any time soon

Vanderlei bate recorde e busca nova meta no Santos

Leeds’ predicted line-up to face Newcastle

Leeds United will be hoping to pick up their first win of the Premier League season when they make the trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle on Friday night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side tasted defeat in their last game when Pascal Struijk’s red card overshadowed a 3-0 loss against Liverpool, and the Dutchman will be one of a few key absentees for tonight’s fixture.

The Leeds manager has a major headache in terms of how he solves things at the back, and with that in mind, below is a look at how the Whites might line up when they travel to Tyneside to take on Newcastle.

In goal, Illan Meslier will be hoping to keep his first clean sheet of the season in the top-flight, having already let in six goals in the club’s opening three games.

In front of him, Bielsa has his work cut out, with Diego Llorente and Robin Koch both out injured and Struijk suspended.

Charlie Cresswell, who was on the bench against the Reds last weekend, may hope to finally get his Premier League chance in the first-team, but Bielsa may opt to stick with his more experienced campaigners.

That could see a little reshuffle at the back, with Luke Ayling moving centrally to partner club captain Liam Cooper, and Stuart Dallas dropping into right-back.

The latter being used as part of the back four opens up a space in midfield, and that could see a return to the starting line-up for Mateusz Klich.

Here on Football FanCast, we’ve called on Bielsa to drop Rodrigo from tonight’s clash against the Magpies, and if the Leeds boss feels the same, this could well be his chance to experiment with Raphinha as the team’s number 10.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay recently claimed that change in position is something on Bielsa’s mind, saying: “We’ll wait to see whether or not there’s any effort made to convert somebody like Raphinha into a 10. From what I can gather, that is on Bielsa’s mind, but I think it would take a heck of a lot of coaching and I think it would be a longer-term process. Raphinha doesn’t instantly look to me like a Bielsa player in that two behind Patrick Bamford.

“It always feels like a little bit closer to an 8 than it is to an out-and-out number 10, who plays solely as a 10, but perhaps it can be done, and I mean, Raphinha, his range of skills are exceptional.”

If Raphinha does move into that Rodrigo role, that could open the door for Dan James to make his full debut for the club following his move from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

Predicted XI: Meslier; Dallas, Ayling, Cooper, Firpo; James, Klich, Phillips, Raphinha, Harrison; Bamford.

Meanwhile, Leeds are plotting a January swoop for this ace…

Pitch is the key with match in balance

Conventional wisdom states that the WACA gets easier to score on as the match wears on but South Africa will face a tall task to begin the series with a win after Australia extended their lead to 322.

Conventional wisdom states that the WACA gets easier to score on as the match progresses but South Africa will face a tall task to begin the series with a win after Australia extended their lead to 322. However, in a game that has had more changes of direction than a line-dancing class, South Africa’s ability to remain in the contest after three days has left the visitors in a confident frame of mind. They began the morning aiming to stop Australia’s momentum, created by Mitchell Johnson’s seven second-day strikes. They closed it hopeful of a chase of less than 350 – a gettable target in Perth – thanks to a disciplined bowling effort, although an unbeaten 66-run stand from Jason Krejza and Brad Haddin late in the day tempered their enthusiasm.”It’s pretty even at the moment, we’ve had an awesome day,” AB de Villiers said. “I think momentum was behind us, we slipped a little bit towards the last half an hour but there wasn’t a lot in the ball or the wicket in the last half an hour. We’ve got a few overs to go until the new ball and hopefully we can take three wickets in the morning.”Four times have sides have posted more than 340 in the fourth innings at the WACA and much will, therefore, depend on the efforts of Australia’s lower order early on the fourth day. A few more wickets in hand would have been useful for the hosts, who for the second time in the game lost Andrew Symonds and Michael Clarke to aggressive shots when they were set.”I’ve been pleased that we’ve kept looking to score,” Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen said. “We’re 322 runs in front in a Test match at the moment because we backed ourselves and we played positive cricket the whole way through.”South Africa’s bowlers maintained the pressure and, while Dale Steyn and Jacques Kallis collect two wickets each, nobody was able to produce a match-changing spell like Johnson. He finished with 8 for 61 after adding one wicket to his overnight tally and Nielsen said the remarkable effort had created a positive feeling in the Australian camp.”It’s been so terrific to see him do so well, the hard work he’s put in over the last 18 months and at different times there’s been questions about whether he might be good enough to do it or where he sits in the whole scheme of things,” Nielsen said. “I don’t think we’ve had any doubt about that.”He’s walking around a bit like a Cheshire Cat at the moment, which is nice. There’s a good feeling in the rooms for Mitchell and we think we can ride that wave tomorrow and further on.”The odd ball has behaved strangely – one Morne Morkel delivery that hit the footmarks bounced so sharply that it nearly cleared Mark Boucher – but there should still be plenty of runs in the pitch. de Villiers said it would be a major challenge chasing down any more than 350.”The wicket looks alright at the moment,” de Villiers said. “It’s very slow though and there’s a lot of patches of grass around which gives you that pace too so it depends which patch it hits. It’s two paced which makes it very difficult. It’s not an easy wicket to bat on, it’s also not an easy wicket to bowl on when the batter gets in so it’s a bit of both worlds.”

Principalmente do Luxemburgo. Quem sou eu para falar do Luxemburgo. O cara já treinou Ronaldo, Zidane. Deu dura no Zidane, Ronaldo.

Celtic suffer further Greg Taylor blow

This has been a difficult campaign for Celtic despite them hiring the exciting Ange Postecoglou.

The Hoops were knocked out of the Champions League and after losing last weekend, Celtic have endured their worst start to a season for 23 years.

From a defensive point of view, the Bhoys are still a mess but their attacking football surely eclipses what we saw last season.

Under Neil Lennon, it’s highly unlikely that they’d have scored three away from home against Real Betis.

Postecoglou needs to learn quickly but what hasn’t helped is a number of injury blows in recent weeks.

Kyogo Furuhashi is set to miss the next six games after an injury sustained on international duty with Japan while Callum McGregor has missed the last two outings with a minor knock.

He is set to return to the fold on Thursday against Raith Rovers but Celtic have suffered a further setback.

Greg Taylor was due to undergo shoulder surgery this week and although the operation has proven successful, the Hoops have been rocked by the news that he could now miss the next 12 matches.

This is a seismic blow to Postecoglou, particularly as the left-back region is where they lack depth the most.

Adam Montgomery has deputised at times this season while such few options have led to Boli Bolingoli making an unexpected return to the side.

His appearance against Livingston last Sunday was a huge surprise. His pandemic related mishap at the beginning of last season made it look as though he’d never play for the club again.

Indeed, after being left out of their Europa League squad list, his chances of match action looked incredibly slim.

Bolingoli’s performance against Livi left a lot to be desired while Montgomery’s lack of experience might also be an issue to the manager too.

Taylor isn’t the most comfortable of full-backs from a defensive point of view but he is undoubtedly their number one choice in an important area of the pitch.

This is now a huge opportunity for others at the club to stand up and be noticed; they have to stake their claims to Postecoglou.

West Indies board 'are getting sponsors'

Julian Hunte, the West Indies Cricket Board president, and Donald Peters the chief executive, have played down the financial concerns of the game

Julian Hunte, the West Indies Cricket Board president, and Donald Peters the chief executive, have played down the financial concerns of the game in the Caribbean despite the recent loss of sponsors for domestic tournaments.Neither the four-day or one-day regional events had title sponsors after Carib Beer pulled out of the first-class event shortly before it began. It left the board needing to fund the tournament, which has been expanded this year, out of their own reserves but Peters said options are on the table.”We are getting sponsors,” Peters told the agency. “But the directors have set some parameters for levels of sponsorship. We have proposals from a number of small sponsors who want to work with the WICB, and we are doing this, and the week before I came to Guyana, we were signing a contract with a major player in the Caribbean.”We will announce this later in the month, so I want to assure you that it is not an absence of sponsors,” he added. “I have read that we are broke, and that sponsors are leaving us, but it really is that we are leaving them. The important thing is if our side starts winning, people will join us.”Nobody rejects us flatly. They just tell us what they can afford and we decide if it’s the right fit. What we have also offered sponsors is to come together to sponsor one competition, so we are optimistic.”Earlier this week Peters was criticised for remarks that put the blame for the money problems at the foot of the West Indies players for not performing consistently on the field and making the team a marketable product. Hunte, though, said the economic climate was a major factor in making life difficult, but that the board was prepared to support themselves.”We are always in the market for sponsors, but if you will look back toShell and to now, you will see the number of firms that have sponsored WestIndies cricket and have left,” he said. “The impression that we get is, given the economic realities of the Caribbean right now, that it is difficult to find sponsors for our tournaments, so that we can play them on a home and away basis.”The cost for the four-day competition is US $2.2 million. We have people shying away from it, but our policy is to ensure that we find the resources every year, as we budget, to be able to run our premier tournaments ourselves.”Where we can get a sponsor or a number of sponsors in a small market like ours, we will embrace them. But the policy is not to depend on the sponsors because we will run the risk of not doing what we are supposed to do.”WICB’s chief financial officer Barry Thomas said the board had plans to pursue alternate means of revenue generation. “The full implementation of a professional league by 2010 and increased revenue from non-traditional sources such as merchandising and new tournaments are some of the things we plan to pursue,” Thomas said. “Also executing an efficient World Twenty20 Championship next year to ensure a positive financial return is also another means to give our revenue a boost.”Thomas said apart from the global recession, developing franchises for a new cricket league and a fresh international touring schedule following the end of the current Future Tours Programme could have a negative impact on the WICB’s finances.
