Sunday, January 18
Start time 10.00am (23.00 GMT)The Big PictureA committed South African chase provided serious excitement at the start of the five-game series as the visitors sneaked to a three-wicket success in Melbourne on Friday. After Australia posted a confident 8 for 271, Johan Botha’s men recovered from being 3 for 90 and 7 for 221 to end their sequence of three defeats in a row.If South Africa win in Hobart on Sunday it will leave Australia needing to take the final matches to claim the series. Australia have threatened their opponents regularly during the home summer, but the number of times they have let them escape has become a major concern. Ricky Ponting’s men have to eliminate those crucial lapses if they want to be a high-performing outfit.ODI form guideAustralia – LWWWW
South Africa – WWWWW
Team newsThe 22-year-old opener David Warner is back after leaving the team briefly when Michael Clarke was passed fit prematurely from a nagging thumb injury. Warner, who has played two Twenty20s and no first-class matches, will open with Shaun Marsh, allowing Michael Hussey to head back to the middle order. The offspinner Nathan Hauritz has travelled the country with the team over the past week without playing, but is likely to get an opportunity at Bellerive Oval, where Tasmania have used three spinners at times this season. James Hopes, who had 0 for 51 off 10 overs in Melbourne, looks like the vulnerable one.Australia (probable) 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 David Warner, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Nathan Hauritz, 9 Nathan Bracken, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Shaun Tait.Dale Steyn seemed to have some problems with a shoulder while fielding in Melbourne and the South Africans are intent on rotating their bowlers, so it won’t take much for Steyn to go and Makhaya Ntini to come in. AB de Villiers is still waiting to return from his bruised hip and if he is cleared Vaughn van Jaarsveld – he dropped two catches, took one and was run out for 4 on debut – could make way. Neil McKenzie, who played his first ODI for five years, would normally be squeezed out, but he showed some form with a valuable 63.South Africa (probable) 1 Herschelle Gibbs, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Neil McKenzie, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Albie Morkel, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Johan Botha (capt), 11 Makhaya Ntini.Watch out for …Ricky Ponting heads back to his home state knowing he needs a big performance to show his fresh team how to recover from tight defeats. Ponting now lives in Sydney, but he remains a huge figure in Hobart and has 208 runs in six ODIs at the ground. Following a difficult summer in the Test team, he now faces another tricky encounter against a formidable opponent.Albie Morkel, the older brother of Morne, stole the match – and the show – from Australia in Melbourne with a calm and brutal 40 from 18 deliveries. Hitting confidently straight down the ground, he also worked the strike and was unflustered as he and Botha sealed the win. A man who can open the bowling and do the work of a batsman is a treasure in any game.Pitch & conditionsThe pitch is traditionally batsman-friendly at Bellerive Oval, but in first-class matches this season it has offered considerable help to the bowlers. Fine conditions are predicted for the match, with a top temperature of 23C.Stats and triviaThe end of the tri-series format means South Africa will face Australia for the first time at Bellerive Oval. In four previous matches against other visiting teams they have two wins and two losses Australia have played 13 games at Bellerive Oval for nine wins, three losses and a tie with Pakistan in 1992-93 Tasmania is Australia’s smallest state and has 159 cricket clubs and 14,308 registered cricketersQuotes”Overall, it was probably the one that got away from us. We’ve got another game on Sunday and we’ve got to learn from what we have done tonight and make sure we are better in some of the areas we were deficient in.”
Ricky Ponting after the MCG defeat“If we play really well in Hobart and we go two-up, then it’ll be massive pressure. But if after this weekend it’s one-all then it’s all-square again. Then the pressure is on both teams. Sunday is going to be a huge game for us.”

A sina tricolor estava mantida.

Celtic’s predicted XI to face Raith Rovers

Celtic have had a rough seven days with Ange Postecoglou overseeing the club’s worst start to a term in 23 years.

The Hoops tasted a defeat in Europe last week despite going ahead in Spain before they lost to lowly Livingston just a few days later.

What would compile the club’s misery is a defeat to second-tier Raith Rovers on Thursday evening.

Postecoglou is busy preparing his players for a League Cup quarter-final this evening but they will do so again without a number of key individuals.

With that in mind, how could they line up? Here’s what we’re predicting…

We are tipping Celtic to make just four changes from the side that lost to Livi.

The first change is in goal where Joe Hart is afforded a rare night off after his frantic start to life at Parkhead. That means that Scott Bain returns between the posts.

There are two changes at the back where Carl Starfelt should be ready to return from illness to replace Stephen Welsh.

Boli Bolingoli is also axed from the XI so Josip Juranovic moves over to the left with Anthony Ralston coming back in on the right.

James McCarthy is given the boot too. The Irishman attracted considerable criticism on Sunday following his abject performance in the defeat at Almondvale.

As a result of his expulsion and Callum McGregor’s injury setback, Ismaila Soro returns to the XI.

He was nearly sent off against Betis in the Europa League but in the words of former coach Ori Guttman, the £11k-per-week earner possesses “explosive power”, something McCarthy lacks.

With Celtic needing to bounce back imminently, they also field the exciting talents of Liel Abada and Jota in the final third.

Liam Scales and Giorgos Giakoumakis have been talked about as earning debuts in this match but it’s likely they will have to settle for places on the bench.

Greg Taylor and Kyogo Furuhashi are still out injured so will miss the cup tie this week.

AND in other news, Celtic dealt big blow ahead of Raith Rovers tie, Postecoglou surely gutted…

Australia stay alive as Haddin century ends losing streak

Brad Haddin’s maiden one-day international century pushed Australia to 9 for 301 as they stayed in the Chappell-Hadlee Series

The Bulletin by Alex Brown at the SCG08-Feb-2009Australia 9 for 301 (Haddin 109, Clarke 64, Hussey 51) beat New Zealand 269 (Elliott 115) by 32 runs

Australia’s influx of youth has dominated discussion of late, but it was the team’s mainstays who completed a successful series-salvaging mission at the SCG. Brad Haddin’s maiden one-day international century was complemented by half-centuries to Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey, propelling Australia to an intimidating 9 for 301 that proved just beyond the grasp of the hard-finishing New Zealand. The hosts appeared set for a comfortable victory at the fall of Tim Southee’s wicket in the 37th over, but a brilliant partnership of 69 from 49 deliveries between Grant Elliott, who struck 115 from 124 balls, and the injured Brendon McCullum (36 from 27) raised hopes of a stunning upset. McCullum, playing with the assistance of a pain-killing injection after hurting his shoulder in the field, punished Nathan Bracken from the uncustomary position of No. 9, while Elliott adopted a more measured approach in compiling his maiden limited-overs hundred.Elliott, however, holed out to Michael Hussey off the bowling of James Hopes in the 45th over to effectively end New Zealand’s surge. McCullum followed in bizarre circumstances – his bat flying to midwicket, the ball to wide mid-off – and Jeetan Patel fell with 15 balls remaining to seal a 32-run victory for Australia that ended an inglorious five-game losing streak.McCullum’s brave decision to bat could cost the team in the days to come. He had been struck a serious enough blow standing up to a rearing Kyle Mills delivery for the team management to call in Gareth Hopkins as cover for Tuesday’s match in Adelaide. McCullum, the vice-captain, will undergo scans to the damaged right shoulder on Monday, with his availability to be determined the following morning.McCullum’s opposite number, Haddin, experienced vastly contrasting fortunes at the SCG. Haddin may have been overlooked in the Indian Premier League draft last week, but proved immensely valuable to Australia’s embattled limited-overs unit with a brilliant innings of 109 from 114 deliveries defined by clean, straight hitting and authoritative footwork.Haddin became the first Australian batsman to post a one-day international century since June last year, and his timing could not have been more opportune. Faced with a second consecutive home series defeat, Haddin – in just his fifth appearance as a limited-overs opener for Australia – combined with Michael Clarke (64 off 69) for a 135-run opening stand that set a solid foundation for a large total.Haddin, 31, batted watchfully in the opening exchanges and accelerated over the course of the afternoon. He blasted Daniel Vettori for a straight six upon reaching 90 and, after a few nervous moments stationed on 99, completed his hundred with a single off the bowling of Tim Southee. Haddin was eventually run-out from the second ball of the batting Powerplay, but not before he had confirmed his status as a pariah to New Zealand. Widely criticised for his controversial role in Neil Broom’s dismissal in Perth last week, Haddin added to the tourists’ frustration with the bat.Australia might well have posted a more imposing total if not for another middle-order tremor, but a brisk sixth-wicket partnership of 62 between Michael Hussey (51 off 32 balls) and Callum Ferguson (28 off 23) still allowed the hosts to pass the 300-run barrier in an ODI for the first time since the tour of the West Indies. With the SCG wicket showing signs of holding, the run-a-ball target always appeared a difficult ask.New Zealand’s run-chase began poorly when Martin Guptill (6) and Ross Taylor (4) were dismissed by Bracken and Ben Hilfenhaus respectively inside the first six overs. Taylor was most unfortunate to have been adjudged lbw by the umpire Steve Bucknor to a delivery he appeared to edge, somewhat negating the earlier incorrect leg-before decision awarded against Ferguson.Wickets fell at a steady clip until the union of Elliott and McCullum. Their entertaining stand enthralled the SCG crowd, but fell short of their ultimate objective of leading New Zealand to a series-sealing victory. For the Australians, the victory provided the comforting feeling that normal programming had resumed – even if that programme was tape-delayed by into Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

Rangers fans hail Lundstram’s performance

A number of Rangers supporters have hailed John Lundstram’s performance against Dundee following huge praise from Steven Gerrard.

The Premiership champions were back in action on Saturday afternoon, making the trip to bottom-placed Dundee. It wasn’t necessarily a classic Rangers performance, but Joe Aribo’s goal proved to be the difference between the two teams on the day.

One player who caught the eye was Lundstram, who produced one of his strongest performances since joining from Sheffield United in the summer. The 27-year-old completed a team-high 66 passes and won six of his eight duels, while also succeeding with each of his three dribble attempts (SofaScore).

Gerrard was full of praise for the midfielder after the game, describing him as an “absolute powerhouse”, as per the club’s official Twitter channel.

Lundstram hasn’t always impressed in his first few months in a Rangers shirt, drawing criticism for some of his early-season performances, but this was a positive sign that he is now ready to go up a gear.
