Big PictureThe bottom-placed teams from last season had undergone massive changes this year but one of them, Bangalore Royal Challengers, already threaten to revert to type, via a dispirited show against Chennai Super Kings on Monday. They will now want to push Deccan Chargers back to type and maintain equilibrium in the table.Deccan, though, had a more authoritative win than Bangalore to start their campaign. They outplayed their opposition, albeit the weaker Kolkata Knight Riders, right from the time Fidel Edwards bowled the first ball. Looks can be deceptive, but Deccan looked the part, Bangalore didn’t.Bangalore may have won one comprehensively, and lost one in the same manner, but their batsmen were consistent in their failures. It is not a good reflection on the side if they have to rely on Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid for the runs. They should be the springboard for the bigger hitters, the Ryders and Pietersens. Which is the real Bangalore? Wednesday could be a good time to find out.Also of interest will be to see whether Newlands improves for the batsmen. Will be too early to read into the batsmen’s form – they were chasing only 102, but Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs, on current form, are a tempting proposition at the top.Bangalore: The batsmen need to score. And fast. The New Zealand imports, their two big draws, haven’t really clicked. Jesse Ryder was mysteriously dropped for their second game. Ross Taylor now has one run from five balls and two innings. Dravid and Kallis have looked their best batsmen. Ryder looks in better touch, is a more complete batsman, and provides a lot with his smart medium-pace bowling. One Indian slot has been a complete waste for them, too. His replacement in the second game, Rajesh Bishnoi, didn’t get to bowl either, and came in to bat after the game had been lost. Kenya’s grounds are undergoing major overhauls ahead of next year’s ICC Under-19 World Cup which will be staged at various centres around the country. A total of sixteen countries will take part including the ten Full Member countries and six Associate qualifiers.A recent inspection by Andy Atkinson, the ICC’s pitch inspector, highlighted areas of concern that needed urgent attention. The concerns centred on the need for substantial improvements in the quality of the surfaces of the venues. Atkinson is expected to be back in Kenya in the next few days to examine how things are progressing.Existing venues in Nairobi and Mombasa are undergoing various degrees of renovation. The biggest overhaul is at Mombasa’s Coast Gymkhana which has had its entire outfield levelled and relaid with a new pitch installed.New venues at Rift Valley Sports Club and Greensteds, both of which are located in the town of Nakuru, have also seen substantial improvements where, until now, cricket was only played on artificial pitches.So far, the programme of works, which is estimated to cost in the region of US$ 250,000, has been funded by Cricket Kenya. This represents a sizeable investment by the board as none of this work is funded by the ICC. The only tangible benefit Kenya will get from hosting the World Cup will be around $150,000 which, in accordance with the ICC’s regulations, will only be released after the event.However, the tournament, the first major one in the country since the 2000 Champions Trophy, will give the prestige of the game inside Kenya a boost, and preparations are already well underway to ensure everything runs smoothly.

The Verdict: Rare off-night

It is hard to feel too angry with McGinn, considering what a consistent performer he has been for Villa for a number of years, scoring 15 goals and registering 20 assists in 119 appearances.

As Preece alludes to, it was rare off-night for the midfielder, completing just 76 per cent of his passes and losing possession 15 times (Sofascore), and the hope is that he returns to his best for the visit of West Ham next Sunday.

The pressure is mounting on Smith after two bitterly disappointing results in a row – they have lost their last three matches – so the clash with the Hammers is a vital one.

Tottenham Hotspur advanced into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening as they defeated Premier League rivals Burnley at Turf Moor.

A 68th-minute header from super-sub Lucas Moura was enough to separate the two sides in what was a pretty drab affair, though it would’ve been a welcome victory for everyone concerned with the club, having lost their last two games.

Spurs were largely dominant as they recorded 62% possession and three more shots on target but that didn’t stop the Clarets from being a major threat, particularly in being aggressive and dominant aerially.

But the Portuguese’s backline held firm to keep a much-needed clean sheet. And one player’s performance was standout as Davinson Sanchez dealt with Burnley’s physical nature impressively.

As per SofaScore, the £18m-rated Colombian registered a whopping 13 clearances in the match. For context, the home side managed only eight between them, so it goes to show just how influential Sanchez was in keeping the opposition at bay.

Elsewhere, he also chipped in with two tackles, further showing why Burnley’s attack struggled to find a way past the north Londoners, who will be aiming to go one better in this competition after last season’s final heartbreak.

Indeed, Sanchez won six aerial battles and only lost possession six times from a whopping 85 touches, thus proving his influence in Nuno’s defence.

The 25-year-old colossus, who cost Spurs a then club-record £42m in August 2017, was equally adept with the ball at his feet, as he managed to find 91% of his 67 passing attempts, via SofaScore.

Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard was left impressed by the defender, too.

‘In the right place to make a crucial intervention as Burnley rallied late, while he used his pace to mop up balls behind. A decent showing,’ he wrote in his post-match ratings column, where he graded the 6 foot 2 an 8/10.

After conceding two in the win over Newcastle, and goals against Vitesse and West Ham in recent weeks, Nuno is left with a massive selection dilemma as Sanchez may have just thrown his name into the hat to start against an out-of-sorts Manchester United this weekend.

The former England seamer, Angus Fraser, has reacted with sadness to the news that his former team-mate, Chris Lewis, has been convicted of drug smuggling, and believes that the case should send a warning to modern-day players of the dangers of being drawn into the trappings of fame.Lewis, 41, was sentenced to 13 years in prison by Croydon Crown Court after being found guilty of smuggling cocaine into the country on a flight from St Lucia. He was arrested at Gatwick Airport in December, along with a friend, Chad Kirnon, when customs officials found five cans of fruit juice in his luggage in which cocaine had been dissolved.”It’s very, very sad,” Fraser told Cricinfo. “I suppose this highlights how difficult it can be for players to cope once they stop playing cricket. They get used to a lifestyle and a certain standard of living, and a lot of cricketers don’t plan for what to do when they stop playing.”As a person, Chris liked the nice things in life, the clothes and the cars, but once his playing days were over, his means of income was reduced. He needed the money and it appears he got dragged into something like this.
