Spurs eye Sergio Conceicao to replace Nuno

According to The Evening Standard, Sergio Conceicao is on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Nuno Espirito Santo as the club’s manager.

The Lowdown: Espirito Santo sacked

After just four months in charge, Nuno has been relieved of his duties at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as of Monday morning.

With Spurs eighth in the table and with just two wins in their last seven Premier League outings (Sky Sports), Daniel Levy and co seemingly had little choice put to part ways with the former Wolves boss.

The Latest: Spurs want Conceicao

As per this latest report from The Evening Standard, Spurs are interested in Conceicao, who is currently in charge of FC Porto.

The 46-year-old is joined on a shortlist for the role by Paulo Fonseca and Antonio Conte.

The Verdict: Strong pedigree

Conceicao may not be a familiar name to most in England, but he is doing an impressive job at Porto. Since arriving at the club in 2017, he has a 71% win rate (Transfermarkt) and has won five trophies overall, including two Portuguese league titles (Transfermarkt). Last season, his side reached the Champions League quarter-finals, defeating Juventus along the way and falling narrowly to eventual tournament winners Chelsea.

Spurs need a manager with an identity and a winning mentality, and those are two things Conceicao can boast. There are other targets on the club’s shortlist, of course, but the 46-year-old would be a good choice if that is the route Levy wants to take. Their last two managerial appointments from Portugal might have been short-lived, but the Porto boss seems to have the characteristics to make it work at Tottenham if he is given the reins.

Fiorentina want Spurs to ‘tempt’ Vlahovic

According to a report by Tuttosport, as translated and shared by Sport Witness, there has been yet another development in the Dusan Vlahovic transfer saga involving Tottenham.

The Lowdown: Tottenham eye Vlahovic swoop…

As per numerous sources over the past two weeks, it is possibly the worst kept secret in football that Spurs are interested in Fiorentina’s star striker.

Following on from their alleged summer bid to sign the 21-year-old (Fanta Calcio), new manager Antonio Conte’s arrival at N17 has seemingly boosted Spurs as they lead the chase to bag Vlahovic in January.

According to La Gazzetta (via Sport Witness), Fabio Paratici’s Tottenham are indeed ‘perhaps the favourite’ to secure his signature and a meeting has already been held with Fiorentina officials in London.

Both Conte and Paratici have also apparently agreed to target the player among their list of names as both Spurs officials plot to take the Serbia striker, according to a report by TUTTOmercatoWEB.

Now, sharing another development, Tuttosport (via SW) have an intriguing update on Fiorentina’s sale stance.

The Latest: La Viola want Spurs to sway their star…

As per the Italian news outlet, La Viola are apparently hoping Tottenham, as well as any other English club, ‘tempt’ Vlahovic and make their move ‘in the coming weeks’ so they can start a bidding war with fellow interested side Juventus.

It is believed that they are eager for Spurs to provide some competition in January and force Juve to lodge a higher bid for the player’s services and vice versa – especially given how keen the Old Lady are on his signing.

The Lilywhites apparently represent a nice ‘trap’ in this regard as Fiorentina seek to make as much money as possible.

The Verdict: Worth the money?

Vlahovic stands out as one of the most exciting star talents in European football, scoring 21 Serie A goals last season and continuing in that vein over 2021/2022 at such a young age.

The forward’s 10 goals and an assist so far this season highlight just how imperious he has been in front of goal already this campaign and Spurs would be remiss not to go all out.

Valued at around £45 million by Transfermarkt, Paratici and co may need to offer much more given his glowing reputation and the amount of competition for his services.

Lauded as ‘incredible’ by Serie A expert Conor Clancy, a bidding war with Juve may be a small price to pay as Tottenham seek to sign a very exciting striker to partner Harry Kane.

Spinners give Bangladesh control

Shakib Al Hasan led from the front as Bangladesh tightened the noose on West Indies to leave them struggling at 192 for 8 by tea on the third day in Grenada

Shakib Al Hasan led from the front as Bangladesh tightened the noose on West Indies to leave them struggling at 192 for 8 by tea before rains forced an early close of play on the third day in Grenada. David Bernard resisted with an unbeaten 61 but he didn’t find much support from his team-mates.In the second session, Bernard, who has been one of the better West Indies players of spin in this series, waged a fighting battle along with Sammy. Bernard played with soft hands while defending and didn’t waste any run-scoring opportunities. He had started with a sweetly timed four off Mahmudullah and a six over long-off against Shakib when rains came down to force an early lunch. Post the break, when Enamul Haque Jnr tempted him with flight, he hared down the track to unfurl straight drives for successive boundaries and he went right back to defend the arm-balls. The audacious shot of his stay was a slog-sweep against Enamul, bowling from round the stumps, to bring up his fifty.Sammy, who was dropped on 9 by Junaid Siddiqui at first slip off Shakib, kept the scorecard moving with his wristy dabs and cuts. West Indies were beginning to move forward with purpose when Bangladesh broke through with a triple strike. Sammy pulled a slightly short delivery from Enamul straight to midwicket, Chadwick Walton, who has had a poor series with the bat, failed yet again, and Ryan Austin fell cheaply. Walton couldn’t resist having a go at a flighted delivery from Shakib, edging a sharp catch to Mahmudullah at first slip, and Austin pulled a short delivery from Shahadat Hossain to mid-on to leave Bernard in danger of running out of partners.Bangladesh had set up the game with a sustained spell of quality spin bowling in the morning. You could sense a wicket was never far away with the spinners creating lots of problems and close-in fielders hovering around the bat. Only two batsmen – Travis Dowlin and Bernard – looked like offering resistance but when Dowlin fell to an umpiring mistake, Bangladesh held the advantage. Dowlin was batting positively, cutting at every opportunity and looking increasingly solid in defense, when he was given out lbw after shouldering arms to a delivery from Enamul that pitched around off stump and turned away.Shakib had got the early breakthroughs for Bangladesh, not through his conventional classy left-arm spin, but with the occasional delivery outside leg stump. Shakib teased Omar Phillips with ones that turned and went straight but now and then he drifted to the leg side. Phillips put a couple of them to the boundary but threw his wicket away off the next one down leg as he swung it to deep backward square leg. He had gifted his wicket in the first innings as well, swinging straight to deep midwicket. The next batsman to fall for the trap was Ryan Hinds, who gloved an attempted sweep down leg and the ball bounded off the keeper to leg slip.Mahmudullah, who opened with Shakib, struck next, ending Floyd Reifer’s misery with a full delivery on off stump. It was a marginal decision as it might have straightened to miss the off stump but the finger went up and West Indies had slid to 100 for 4. The hosts’ hopes for a competitive total rested on Bernard.

Flintoff's fling inspires England Ashes glory

England have regained the Ashes with a crushing 197-run victory amid jubilant scenes at The Oval

The Bulletin by Andrew Miller at The Oval23-Aug-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAndrew Flintoff celebrates his run out of Ricky Ponting that sparked England’s march to the Ashes•PA Photos

Amid scenes of delirium unwitnessed in South London since the unforgettable summer of 2005, England’s cricketers reclaimed the Ashes on a tumultuous fourth afternoon at The Oval, as Australia’s brave resistance – led by a century of incredible mental fortitude from Michael Hussey – was unpicked, wicket by wicket, minute by minute, until, at 5.47pm, and with an expectant crowd willing on the moment of glory, Hussey prodded Graeme Swann to Alastair Cook at short leg to spark the celebrations into life.At the moment of victory, all of England’s players rushed into a huddle on the edge of the square – all except for one, that is. In his moment of Test retirement, Andrew Flintoff’s first instinct was to seek out and console the crestfallen centurion Hussey, whose 121 from 263 balls had given his side a hope of salvation, but whose careless running between the wickets during a fraught afternoon session had been the single biggest factor in their demise. By calling for the single that led to the run-out of his captain and resistance-leader Ricky Ponting for 66, Hussey is unlikely to recall this particular innings with any fondness whatsoever.Inevitably, it was Flintoff who stole the show from the Australians. He could not be the tub-thumping batsman of old in this series, while his bowling – though thunderous at Lord’s – faded cruelly as the concerns about his right knee began to mount. But as a presence, and as a man who can make things happen on a cricket field, his spell has scarcely diminished. In a moment that is sure to be replayed for years on end, he gathered a firm clip from Hussey, steadied himself as Ponting hesitated fatally, then unleashed a fast, flat, unerring swing of the arm that plucked out the off stump with Ponting a foot short.Though the decision went to a replay, Flintoff was in no doubt. He raised his arms in his now-habitual Kodak pose, and waited to be enveloped by his jubilant team-mates. It was a moment eerily reminiscent of Gary Pratt’s series-turning shy at Trent Bridge in 2005, when Ponting once again was the fall guy, and it uncorked the tensions in the crowd as surely as the champagne was uncorked in England’s dressing-room some three hours later. It brought to an end an unnerving stand of 127, and it shattered Australia’s collective will.Five balls later, their batsman of the series, Michael Clarke ran himself out for a duck after a clip off the pads ricocheted to Andrew Strauss at leg slip, and Australia could not recover their poise. Though Hussey was badly dropped by Paul Collingwood at slip on 55 off Swann, in Swann’s next over, Marcus North dragged his back foot out of the crease as he swung at a big ripper, and Matt Prior, having gathered well high to his left, flicked off the bails almost as an afterthought. Their target of 546 had become a distant figment of their imagination, and at 236 for 5, their only remaining hope was to bat out the final four sessions of the series.Brad Haddin chose pugnacity as the means to reboot Australia’s innings, and he signalled his intent with two fours in his first nine balls, including a fizzing cover-drive as James Anderson overpitched. But Anderson might have dismissed him three times in a single over, including a regulation clip to short midwicket that was spilled by the substitute, Graham Onions. As he and Hussey took their seventh-wicket stand to 91, an ever-anxious crowd began to shuffle in their seats. On 34, however, his luck finally ran out, as he advanced down the track to Swann and picked out Strauss with a lofted flick to deep midwicket. It was to be the game-breaking moment. Strauss, usually the coolest of characters in the field, celebrated euphorically as The Oval erupted once more, and seven balls later, the end truly was nigh. Steve Harmison – hitherto muted on a pitch that did not suit his style – extracted enough life for Mitchell Johnson to fence to second slip, where Collingwood, to his relief and joy, finally held on. Then, when Peter Siddle played around his front pad to lob a simple chance to mid-off, Harmison had his second scalp in the space of 12 balls.Mike Hussey was last man out for a magnificent, if in vain, 121•Getty Images

That quickly became three in 13, as Stuart Clark fenced nervily to Cook at short leg, and though Hilfenhaus averted the hat-trick with a stabbed defence straight back down the track, there was no longer any way to stem England’s tide of emotion. With Harmison stalking to the crease with a predatory menace unseen in Ashes cricket for four long years, the crowd finally dared to proclaim the Ashes were coming home. Fifteen balls later, they were. Some six hours earlier, England’s day of destiny had dawned with more than just a frisson of anxiety in the air, thanks to the ease with which Australia’s openers had pushed along at four runs an over on the third evening of the match. But Swann soothed the nation by claiming the initial breakthrough at the end of his second over, tweaking a succession of sharply spinning offbreaks past Simon Katich’s edge, before nailing him plumb lbw with the arm-ball.Swann bounced for joy in the middle of the pitch as a massive roar of relief and ecstasy erupted from the stands, but almost immediately the fervour morphed into a respectful standing ovation for the incoming Ponting, in his 136th Test and almost certainly his last in England after four memorable Ashes tours. Before he had faced a delivery, however, England had struck again, as Broad this time hurried Shane Watson on off stump and beat the inside-edge of his defensive prod. Watson did not seem best amused at the decision, but replays suggested there was nothing wrong with the appeal at all. For all of Watson’s impressive form in five innings at the top of Australia’s order, it was nevertheless the fourth time this series he had fallen in such a manner. Food for thought as he works on his new career as an opener. At 90 for 2 and with a jittery Hussey at the crease, England swarmed onto the offensive, with Swann camping four men around the bat at all times and at one stage sending down 28 dot balls in a row as Hussey prodded and smothered with desperate determination. At the other end, Ponting’s eagerness to play the pull was tempered by his wariness of the vagaries of the wicket, although whenever he was tempted, he executed the stroke with the mastery that has made it his calling-card for the past decade. In the first over after lunch, Ponting laced a first-ball full-toss from Broad through the covers for four, then tickled Swann around the corner to bring up a battling and brilliant half-century from 76 deliveries. Broad subsequently received a warning for running on the pitch to deepen the crowd’s growing concerns, who had just seen Collingwood at slip parry a rare Ponting edge with his left boot. But then up popped Flintoff, and once he’d had his say, there was no holding back the inevitable.

Newcastle eyeing deal for Antonin Barak

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s interest in Hellas Verona attacking midfielder Antonin Barak…

What’s the talk?

According to L’Arena, via Tutto Hellas Verona, the Magpies are interested in a deal to sign the Serie A midfielder in the January transfer window.

The report claims that West Ham are also showing an interest in the Czech international, with the Italian side wanting £21m (€25m) for his services.

Imagine him & Willock

Eddie Howe must land Barak in January as he could help Newcastle secure a dream midfield with the Verona beast playing alongside summer signing Joe Willock.

Barak is a box-to-box midfielder who can play in a typical number eight role or in the hole as a number 10, with the ability to score and create goals in the final third. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.05 for Verona in the Serie A this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists.

Last term, he produced seven goals and three assists on loan with the club, whilst also winning 4.2 duels per game for his side, averaging a rating of 6.91. He then signed permanently and has continued his fine form, attracting interest from Newcastle.

Juventus and Czech Republic legend Pavel Nedved previously hailed Barak and claimed that he had the ability to play at a higher level than Udinese, prior to his move to Hellas Verona. He said:

“If we talk about Czech talents, we do not have to try a lot. Udinese has Barak and Jankto, two I like. They are doing well, but I think they can play at a higher level.”

He could form a dream partnership with Joe Willock for the Magpies, as the former Arsenal man is similar in his box-to-box style. Willock scored eight goals and made 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game for Newcastle in the Premier League last season, showing that he also has the quality to make an impact at both ends of the pitch.

This means that Howe could have a midfield duo capable of covering ground defensively and contributing in the final third when they break forward to support the attack. Therefore, the pair could provide a balance to the midfield and form a platform upon which Newcastle can build their attacks and stop the opposition.
