Steve Madeley drops Sam Johnstone update

Steve Madeley has dropped an update on the current situation of West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

What’s the talk?

In a recent article for The Athletic, Madeley revealed that the 28-year-old’s contract talks with the Baggies have made little to no progress over the past few months, meaning it looks almost certain that the England international will leave The Hawthorns on a free transfer when his current deal with the club expires at the end of the season.

However, the journalist does go on to state that the goalkeeper is not expected to leave the club in the January transfer window – despite the shot-stopper being linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Newcastle United and Rangers – as there is unlikely to be a Premier League side desperate enough to pay a sizeable fee for a player they could sign for nothing in a matter of months – something which Valerien Ismael recently discussed.

Speaking about Johnstone’s future, the Albion manager said: “You never know what can happen in football if a ‘keeper gets a big injury and a club needs to replace him, you never know what the situation could be. But at the moment it’s not the plan for Sam to leave us.”

Fans will be outraged

Considering how integral a part of the West Brom side Johnstone has become since his £6.62m move from Manchester United back in 2018, the very real prospect of the 28-year-old leaving the club for nothing at the end of the current campaign is sure to have left The Hawthorns faithful outraged.

Indeed, over his 24 Championship outings so far this season, the £7.2m-rated goalkeeper has kept 11 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.4 saves and 1.7 successful runs out per game, with these returns seeing him average a SofaScore match rating of 6.82 – ranking the shot-stopper as Ismael’s 14th-best player in the second tier.

However, it was over £32.5k-per-week man’s 37 Premier League appearances last time out that the ‘keeper proved that he is very much good enough for the top flight, keeping six clean sheets and making an average of 4.5 saves per match, with these metrics seeing the shot-stopper earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.03 – ranking him as Albion’s second-best performer in the division.

As such, while Johnstone remaining at The Hawthorns beyond the end of the January transfer window will undoubtedly provide the club’s automatic promotion hopes with a significant boost, the subsequent loss of the goalkeeper on a free transfer this summer will certainly be an extremely hard pill to swallow for everyone involved with the club.

Poor first day for Shaun Tait show

Rajasthan need Shaun Tait to make more of an impact than he did in the opening game

Cricinfo staff13-Mar-2010

Shaun Tait needs to do better than 1 for 46 to be a pace spearhead (file photo)•Getty Images

The fastest bowler in cricket was in town. His tussle with Sachin Tendulkar had already created the buzz, and thousands braved the scorching afternoon sun to line up outside the Brabourne Stadium two hours before the scheduled start. Shaun Tait paced around marking his run-up minutes after Mumbai chose to bat, aware of the hype preceding his IPL debut. The sense of drama was heightened further when Shane Warne delayed Tait’s IPL baptism by asking Dmitri Mascarenhas to bowl the first over. Finally, when Tait charged in with his rhythmic run-up, he started poorly, slinging two wides behind Sanath Jayasuriya’s legs. But his first legitimate ball nearly took out Jayasuriya, whose 40-year-old reflexes were too slow to pick the toe-crusher, and, if not for a bottom edge, the Sri Lankan’s stumps would have been splayed. Unfortunately, Tait never repeated that delivery again in the innings.Last evening, Adam Gilchrist, who used to keep wickets to Tait for Australia, had said raw pace on Indian pitches would be ineffective if the ball was not pitched in the right areas. It is a cliché, but it also happens to be one of the basic rules of fast bowling. Tendulkar had already knocked down Tait’s challenge with two neatly tucked on-drives that raced to the ropes.Once the big-name opening pair was dismissed, Tait had a golden opportunity to hit back by winning the smaller duels, like the one against another newcomer Aditya Tare. Instead of dominating Tare, Tait ended up being dominated as he bowled short on to the batsman’s hips to begin with and later pitched it short on the off side, giving enough space for the batsman to free his arms.Warne had already taken Kamran Khan out of the attack after his first over and was relying on Tait to halt Mumbai’s charge. Last year, Kamran’s debut IPL season was aborted after a few games due to a suspect action. By picking him today ahead of a senior bowler like Munaf Patel, Warne had taken a big gamble. Tait’s inconsistency only added to the captain’s worries.Clearly, Tait was still struggling when he came back at death. Immediately, he sprayed five wides and then delivered half-volleys, picked and dispatched easily by the Mumbai batsmen. In stark contrast, another bowler with a slingy action, Lasith Malinga, was at the top of his game at the Brabourne. Unlike Tait, who relied solely on pace, he allied accuracy to pace, making an instant impact. Pitching much fuller, Malinga suffocated the batsmen for space while smartly varying his speed all the time. The slower bouncer was deftly utilised – it even beat the marauding bat of Yusuf Pathan, the first centurion of the third IPL.Malinga was brought in during the crunch moments and he did not disappoint. Unlike Warne, who had split Tait’s four overs into two spells at the two ends of the innings, Tendulkar brought back Malinga for an over when Yusuf had just started his rampage and then for the crucial final over. Rajasthan had ransacked 62 runs in three overs, forcing Tendulkar to re-think his strategy. Next over, the 14th, Malinga came back and kept Paras Dogra tied for the first five balls before Yusuf biffed a resounding straight drive for four. The atmosphere inside Brabourne had reached a crescendo when Malinga returned to deliver the final over, which he started with an athletic run-out of Dogra, followed by Amit Uniyal playing on to the stumps. Chants of “Malinga, Malinga” reverberated across the stadium as Rajasthan lost their steam. Tait sat in the dugout deflated, and could only appreciate the Sri Lankan’s skills. “Malinga showed what you can do in the end and hopefully Shaun can learn from that,” Warne said after the defeat. In the absence of Shane Watson, Warne will rely heavily on Tait to make an impact. Perhaps, he got carried away today after his captain had sold him as the season’s best-selling ticket. Tait needs to start delivering or he could end up as a flop show.

Aston Villa eyeing Robin Olsen after Randolph blow

Aston Villa have turned their sights towards signing Robin Olsen after suffering a transfer blow over Darren Randolph…

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days had suggested Steven Gerrard’s side were keen on landing the Republic of Ireland international, with an enquiry having already been made for the West Ham goalkeeper.

But now, according to journalist Alex Crook, Villa have failed in their pursuit of the Hammers man, and have instead lined up a swoop for Sheffield United loanee Olsen.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “#AVFCnow turning their attentions to Robin Olsen after failing to land Darren Randolph.”

Villa making moves

On loan from AS Roma, Olsen has played 11 times in the Championship this season for the Blades, but has fallen out of contention in recent weeks and months after being a virtual ever-present for the opening of the campaign.

With 53 caps for Sweden, the 32-year-old is a highly-experienced campaigner who of course has had previous experience of playing in the top-flight.

Indeed, the 6 foot 5 shot-stopper was impressive over his seven Premier League appearances while on loan at Everton last year, helping to keep two clean sheets, conceding an average of just 1.3 goals and also making three saves per game too.

While the signing of Olsen himself is hardly like to set hearts aflutter in Villa fans – especially when you consider they have just signed Philippe Coutinho in recent days – it should still be a move that has supporters very much impressed though.

Gerrard’s side have been quick and decisive in this transfer window, taking advantage of every opportunity that has arisen and come their way.

Whether it was snapping up Coutinho on loan and Gerrard using his pull and previous links to the Brazilian, or swooping in ahead of the likes of Chelsea to land Digne, Villa have been very fast to act.

Now, Crook’s update that after hitting a roadblock in trying to sign Randolph, they have already lined up an alternative target in Olsen suggests a highly thought-out planning structure that bodes well for their future recruitment.

Meanwhile, this Aston Villa target is now set to join their Premier League rivals…

Lorgat's visit could boost Pakistan's profile

Haroon Lorgat’s visit to Pakistan is attracting interest because it comes after a year in which Pakistan’s position on the cricket map has gradually been edged out

Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, will become the first high-ranking official from the body to visit Pakistan since the terror attacks of March 2009, when he arrives in Karachi on Thursday. Officially the trip is part of the launch and countdown to the World Twenty20, due to kick off in the Caribbean from April 30. Pakistan is the defending champion and trophy-holder as well as the leading nation in the format, having been runners-up in the inaugural edition in 2007.But the visit is attracting interest because it comes after a year in which Pakistan’s position on the cricket map has gradually been edged out; the World Cup 2011 has been taken away after the attacks on the Sri Lankan team, Pakistan’s players have been snubbed by the IPL, relations with the ICC have cooled after the legal dispute that followed the World Cup decision and ties with the BCCI, the game’s power-broker, are at a low. Financially the board has been hit hard by the lack of cricket in Pakistan and the extravagances of administrations gone. The ICC has set-up a task force to help Pakistan through this difficult period, through which some concessions have emerged. The ECB has helped by offering to make this summer in England a Pakistani summer; Pakistan play ‘host’ for six Tests against Australia and England from June. The MCC has also done its bit, sponsoring the Pakistan-Australia series for the first time ever in its history.PCB officials, including the chairman Ijaz Butt, are expected to meet with Lorgat on the sidelines of the main event, though little is expected from them, especially as an ICC board meeting begins in Dubai from next week. “The main issues will be dealt with in the board meetings, though obviously the chairman will meet Mr Lorgat on the sidelines here,” Wasim Bari, the PCB’s COO, told Cricinfo.”Importantly, the spirit to help Pakistan is coming forward and that is very positive for us,” Bari said. “The ECB cooperation came about as a result of the task force meetings. The MCC also wants to help Pakistan and has started the process with their sponsorship. They’ve even offered to host a Test between Pakistan and India should that happen, so these are gains for us.”Lack of cricket has been a concern for Pakistan over the last three years, a period in which they went one whole calendar year (2008) without playing a single Test. In contrast, commitments have picked up. Following the World Twenty20, they go to Sri Lanka to play in the Asia Cup and then begins the lengthy English summer. A full series of Tests, ODIs and T20Is, has been scheduled for sometime in October, to be played most likely in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. There exists also the possibility of another series to take Pakistan into the 2011 World Cup.”Pakistan has plenty of international cricket coming up in all three formats of the game over the next few months,” Lorgat said. “That is hugely important considering it is not possible for the national team to play on home soil at present. The international cricket that is planned shows that Pakistan has not been isolated by the unfortunate circumstances at home. It is vital that the team continues to play regularly, even if that is at a neutral venue.”Butt will travel to the ICC meeting next week, planning to negotiate some more fixtures, though details are as yet unclear. The task force had discussed the idea of a series of limited-overs matches between Pakistan and a World XI side in the Middle East to raise funds but that hasn’t been able to find a place in the calendar yet.”This year is busy for us anyway,” Bari said. “But the chairman goes to Dubai and there is a possibility that negotiations that are underway could bring forth some more international matches at a venue. These are initial stages of such plans but there are lots of proposals. To turn ideas into reality will take some effort but the attitude from everyone is positive.”

Sky Sports drop West Ham transfer update

Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has dropped a major update on West Ham United’s plans for the rest of the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Speaking on The Transfer Show on Sky Sports, Sheth revealed that the Hammers are “still” keen on bringing in a new centre-forward as they look to provide Michail Antonio with some vital striking competition.

He said: “David Moyes is still looking for a striker to strengthen his West Ham United squad this month, but he won’t take any risks in the market.”

Fans will be buzzing

While Antonio has certainly led the line well for the Hammers this season – he’s scored eight goals and provided another six assists in just 21 Premier League games – he could certainly do with being given some help up front.

That’s something which former Leeds man Noel Whelan has suggested Moyes’ side should be targeting this month. He said: “You can’t have enough strikers. When you look at the top sides and where where you want to be year in, year out in the Premier League, you’ve got to have cover.

“You’ve got to have options. It’s no different to Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool. You’ve got to have options in these positions. I think it will benefit, Michail Antonio. Yes, I know he’s going to be up for the fight to keep his place but it becomes healthy competition. Sometimes you’re not going to be able to play the same as you did the week before when you’re on a good run.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Paddy Kenny, who insisted: “You can’t rely on one man to score all of your goals. Antonio is great but he’s not going to score every week. Sometimes that pressure of scoring goals can almost be a burden. It wouldn’t surprise me if West Ham went and got a player to come in and support him.”

If the Hammers are intent on making a push for a Champions League place for next season, then bringing in someone who can share that goal-scoring burden with Antonio could prove to be crucial, and be the real difference-maker.

The news that Moyes is “still” looking for a new centre-forward is sure to have West Ham fans buzzing.

Meanwhile, West Ham are pushing hard for this attacker…

Taxmen in nationwide IPL sweep

Federal income-tax and revenue officials have extended their operations into the most coordinated and high-profile exercise of recent times in India

Even as the key figures in the IPL mess continue their battles, federal income-tax and revenue officials have extended their operations into the most coordinated and high-profile exercise of recent times in India. The full might of the government machinery has been deployed from Chandigarh in the north to Chennai in the south, investigating franchises, rights holders and other entities and individuals – including top Bollywood stars – associated with the IPL.The scale of the operation is staggering. The exercise is being coordinated by a director-general of vigilance in Mumbai heading a 24-hour investigating cell; those involved are officials of the Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax department – coming under the finance ministry – and officials of the Corporate Affairs ministry. The investigations – covering a range of alleged infringements including money laundering, tax evasion, shell companies, black (illegal) money and misusing tax havens – appear to be an implementation of the finance minister’s assurance to Parliament that the allegations would be thoroughly probed. The day began with the taxmen raiding the offices of Multi Screen Media (MSM, formerly Sony Entertainment Television) and World Sports Group (WSG), the two firms that hold the TV broadcast rights to the IPL. The “surveys”, as tax officials call them, were conducted in four different locations, including the home of the WSG’s South Asia president, Venu Nair.In 2008, WSG bagged the TV rights for a ten-year period, with a $918 million bid and a promise to spend $108m on promoting the event. It had simultaneously signed a deal with MSM that Sony would be the official broadcaster. The contract was recast before IPL 2009, with MSM agreeing to pay $1.63 billion for nine years. That contract – and specifically an alleged $80 million facilitation fee – is now believed to be the subject of investigation but WSG has denied allegations of impropriety. “Any allegation that World Sports Group has used any funds received in connection with its sub-licence of these rights for inappropriate or unlawful activities is completely unfounded and without substance,” it said in a statement. The rest of the day followed a familiar pattern. In Chandigarh, home to the Kings XI Punjab, a court summoned Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia and Mohit Burman, co-owners of the franchise, on July 23 in a case of missing balance sheets and accounts details. In Kolkata, income tax officials visited the offices of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), co-owned by Shah Rukh Khan, located within the headquarters of the Cricket Association of Bengal at Eden Gardens and the offices of Gameplan, a sports management company associated with the franchise. In Secunderabad, an IT team visited the office premises of Deccan Chargers Sporting Ventures limited. There was even a check in Chennai, where 40-odd officials turned up at the office of India Cements, which owns the Chennai Super Kings. India Cements is run by N Srinivasan, who is also the BCCI secretary. And in Mumbai, IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi was questioned again at the Four Seasons Hotel where he’s staying about a multi-million dollar contract for the broadcasting rights of IPL.In New Delhi, the Enforcement Directorate registered a preliminary case against the IPL and its franchises to probe possible violations of foreign exchange rules and regulations. The case was registered under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act to investigate claims that huge funds have found their way into IPL from international tax havens.
