Journo drops huge Arsenal transfer claim

Arsenal are yet to sign anyone in the January transfer window, but that could soon change…

What’s the word?

According to reliable Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor, those around the Emirates Stadium should expect something to happen before Monday night’s deadline.

“Expecting movement at Arsenal in coming days,” he tweeted following Calum Chambers’ exit to Aston Villa on Thursday.

Worryingly thin

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has been left hugely light on options heading into the second half of the season as the English defender’s departure was their fifth of the window so far.

The north London outfit saw a game postponed earlier this month due to the lack of players available, yet they continue to let the bulk of their backups leave the club.

Players like Chambers, Sead Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles aren’t going to set the starting XI alight but one or two injuries would’ve seen them required and they would’ve certainly done a solid job.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s attempts to bring in new additions has been frustrating as they continue to miss out on targets. For instance, the club were prepared to splash out on the highly-coveted Dusan Vlahovic but he has instead opted to join Serie A giants Juventus.

It also appears as if another target in Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak isn’t keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium either, as per transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Gunners are running out of time to bolster Arteta’s playing squad and a new striker has to be among the priorities given the uncertainty surrounding Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah.

However, Taylor’s latest claim should provide worried Arsenal supporters with some encouragement heading into Monday night. They have left it late but the belief that there should be some business completed is certainly exciting to hear.

Send Indian team to NCA – Gavaskar

Gavaskar has come down hard on India’s shortcomings against the short ball, suggesting they train at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and rectify their difficulties

Sunil Gavaskar has come down hard on India’s shortcomings against the short ball during the World Twenty20 in the West Indies, suggesting they train at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore to rectify their difficulties. For the second time in succession, India bowed out of a World Twenty20 without registering a win in a single Super Eights game, making it six such losses in a row since England last year.India won both their group games but lost to Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka in the second stage. Besides their difficulties in tackling bouncers – a weakness exploited by their opponents – India were ordinary in terms of their fielding and running between the wickets.”The guys who have been found to be uncomfortable against the short ball should be sent to the NCA, where they will be able to practice against the short ball, either through a bowling machine or maybe with some of the younger bowlers bowling to them from say 18 to 16 yards,” Gavaskar told the news channel . “They are under contract with the BCCI so nobody can actually claim that they need a break they don’t need a break if they haven’t performed, they need to go to the NCA and hone their skills against the short ball.”Several other former India players criticized the team’s performance, saying it was not adequately prepared to succeed in a tournament where the quality of cricket was considerably higher than the IPL. MS Dhoni, the captain, said the constant traveling associated with the IPL and it’s after parties took a toll on the body. There was just a five-day gap between the IPL final and the start of the World Twenty20, giving the players barely enough rest, but Gavaskar, a member of the IPL’s governing council, didn’t blame the IPL for India’s performance.”If that was the case then Sri Lanka would not have been in the semi-final, or England and Australia. A lot of Australian players were in the IPL so I don’t think that is an issue at all,” he said. “It’s just the fact that T20 is a format where you have got to be good on the day and if you are not good on your day, you lose. I don’t think much should be read into the fact that the players were playing IPL, if anything playing in the IPL meant that they had lot more practice than the other teams.”Former players like Madan Lal and Mohammad Azharuddin felt Dhoni was making excuses by referring to the IPL parties and Gavaskar concurred. “I don’t think that is an excuse at all. I think that is a very poor excuse used by people to say that IPL parties were the reason for the team not performing here. Tell me one thing, there were no parties here were they? So how can you say that the team performed badly in the Caribbean because of parties in India?”Continuing on the fall-out of India’s exit, Gavaskar chose not to comment on coach Gary Kirsten’s alleged statement that he was fitter than some of the team members, saying he would rather wait for Kirsten to communicate his thoughts officially to the BCCI. However, Gavaskar threw his weight behind Dhoni, with the Indian media speculating on his future as captain of India in the limited-overs formats.”MS Dhoni has done the best that he could. I still think he is the best bet as far as captaining the country is concerned. He has not quite had the luck he had when he had started with the India captaincy.”

Issa Diop handed West Ham lifeline

Despite the fact that David Moyes identified a new central defender as one of his primary targets for West Ham United in the January transfer window, the 58-year-old Hammers boss ultimately failed to land a new player in the position prior to Monday’s transfer deadline.

Indeed, with Angelo Ogbonna being ruled out for the season with an ACL injury, West Ham were heavily linked with a number of central defensive targets last month, the most prominent of which was Olympique de Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car.

However, with the Irons looking to take the 25-year-old on a loan to buy deal, and the Ligue 1 outfit being unwilling to budge on a £19m (£16m) upfront transfer fee, the Irons’ move for the Croatia international fell through on the final day of the winter market.

As such, Moyes will have to play out the rest of the season with just Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson and Issa Diop as options in the heart of his defence – something that, considering Zouma’s previous trouble with a hamstring tendon injury, as well as Dawson and Diop’s poor form while covering for the stricken first-choice pairing, could come as a major blow to West Ham’s top-four hopes this term.

Although, looking at the silver-linings from the Hammers’ failed attempts to sign a new centre-back this month, the rest of the season will now provide one player with the perfect opportunity to finally live up to the expectations about his potential following his then-club-record £22m transfer to West Ham – in the shape of Diop.

January transfer lifeline

Indeed, following his move from Toulouse back in 2018, the now-25-year-old quickly established himself as a first-team regular at the London Stadium, playing 33 Premier League fixtures in his debut campaign in East London, over which the £10.8m-rated defender helped his side keep seven clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.9 interceptions, 2.1 tackles, 4.7 clearances and winning 65% of his duels per game.

These returns saw the £61k-per-week former France U21 international earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.99, ranking him as the Irons’ best-performing defender that season – with his displays earning him a considerable amount of praise.

Following West Ham’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United in October of 2018, Jose Mourinho singled the centre-back out in his post-match comments, with the legendary coach stating: “Congratulations to the scout who found Diop, a monster who dictated everything.”

However, since that campaign, the 6 foot 4 defender’s career in East London has stalled, with the 25-year-old earning seasonal SofaScore match ratings of 6.70 over 32 Premier League appearances in 2019/20, 6.92 over 18 top-flight outings in 2020/21 and averaging an extremely disappointing match rating of just 6.59 over his eight league fixtures so far this season – something which has seen the former Toulouse prodigy slip down the Hammers’ defensive pecking order.

As such, should the Frenchman wish to get his Premier League career back on track, Diop simply must grasp the opportunity handed to him by West Ham’s lack of action this January in the second half of the season – or else his days at the club, and perhaps even in the Premier League, could well be numbered.

Shoaib Malik's one-year ban lifted

The one-year ban imposed by the PCB on former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has been lifted by the appeal tribunal

Osman Samiuddin29-May-2010

Shoaib Malik could soon be playing for Pakistan again•AFP

Shoaib Malik’s appeal against the punishment handed out to him by the PCB earlier this year has been “partially accepted” by an independent arbitration tribunal, which has overturned his one-year ban and halved his Rs 2 million fine.”The board’s legal advisor has reported to me that after monitoring Malik in the last three months they feel he has improved his behavior and attitude,” Irfan Qadir, the arbitrator, said. “I have decided to uphold his appeal and lift the ban as the purpose of disciplinary action against players was to make them rethink about their careers.”Malik was relieved after the decision and said the purpose behind his appeal was to “clear this stigma” against his name.”His appeal has been partially accepted,” the PCB’s legal advocate Talib Rizvi told Cricinfo. “The ban has been lifted and his fine has been halved. The board has the right to review the decision but as of now he is eligible to play for Pakistan again.””I am very happy that with the blessings of Allah my stand has been vindicated and all the baseless charges and allegations have been quashed,” Malik, 28, said in a statement. “It’s a sort of new life for me and I am very happy.”The charge against Malik was never clearly explained by the inquiry committee that decided on the punishment but it was widely thought to be for what a number of management officials and players called his negative influence on the side. This was confirmed in a subsequently leaked video of the inquiry committee meetings, in which Malik’s role within the squad was blasted by a number of players including Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Yousuf.Qadir, a retired judge, will now send a report to the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt, who will put the decisions in front of the board of governors. “We’re going according to our constitution which says an appeal can be filed in such cases,” Butt told Cricinfo. “I will now receive the report from the arbitrator and then put it up in front of the board of governors for their approval.”Though Butt refused to say so, it is expected he will approve the findings and that the board of governors will ratify it as well, thus removing legal obstacles from the way of Malik’s potential return. Malik was named in the list of 35 probables for Pakistan’s next two assignments, in Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup and then a long summer tour to England, but it is unlikely he will make the cut for the first task. The 15-man squad for the Asia Cup is to be picked in the first week of June and the governing board’s next meeting is likely to be after that. The decision also paves the way for some of the other players’ punishments to be reduced or removed. The board has eased its stance in recent days against the punished players. Butt first told a national assembly meeting that he would review the punishments again before lavishly praising Younis Khan – another player punished by his board. Younis’ hearing, which was due to take place immediately after Malik’s, was adjourned to June 5.Malik’s relief, Cricinfo understands, is part of an agreement the board has reached already with at least three other players. According to board sources, like Malik, Afridi and the Akmal brothers will also see their monetary fines cut by half. Of the other players punished, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan’s next hearing is scheduled for June 19, while no dates have yet been set for Afridi and the Akmal brothers. When and if players such as Malik and Younis return – and if Mohammad Yousuf comes back from retirement – questions are likely to be asked about how cordial Pakistan’s dressing room will be, given the startling levels of mistrust and disunity in the side. The PCB says they have given the team’s manager Yawar Saeed and other officials greater authority in clamping down against any future incidents.”I have instructed the team manager and other officials including the captain that any act of indiscipline, any such problem, and they have my full backing in immediately sending a player back,” Butt said. “They need not even refer the case to me, they can send the player back immediately as they will have full authority to do so.”

Newcastle eye Man Utd ace Lingard

Keith Downie has now dropped some exciting Newcastle United transfer news on Jesse Lingard live on Sky Sports.

The Lowdown: One to watch?

A lot of the focus on Transfer Deadline Day has been on the potential for the St. James’ Park faithful to wrap up deals for Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Hugo Ekitike.

However, some news has emerged on Lingard that suggests that he too could be one to move to the North East before the deadline hits tonight.

The Latest: Downie on Lingard

Speaking live on Sky Sports (via The Transfer Centre 14:23pm), Downie has revealed that the Tyneside outfit are now ‘pushing’ to sign Lingard:

“We can tell you that Newcastle are pushing to bring in Jesse Lingard from Manchester United.

“He’s a player Newcastle have been keen on throughout the transfer window and we know they have been in talks with Manchester United.

“The talks had reached a bit of an impasse but with the Ekitike deal hanging in the balance, Newcastle are looking elsewhere – but they do have competition from West Ham for Lingard.

“As we understand the situation, Newcastle are very keen on Lingard and pushing hard to bring him in.

“Lingard would be keen on a move but the decision rests with the Manchester United board.”

The Verdict: Exciting

With all of the players that the Magpies seem to bringing in today, it is certainly exciting to see that Lingard could very well be one of them.

With Burn, Targett and potentially Ekitike, they would have covered the centre-back, left-back and striker positions, adding to the signings of right-back Kieran Trippier, forward Chris Wood and midfield maestro Bruno Guimaraes.

The one position that they are potentially missing is an attacking midfielder, and Lingard would fit the bill in that regard.

His nine goals and five assists on loan for West Ham United in the second half of last season show that he is very comfortable in front of goal, and the Toon could do with adding some more goals from the middle of the park, with no midfielder scoring more than two for them this campaign.
