No guarantees for Hayden investment

Matthew Hayden’s plans to become a part-owner of the Brisbane Heat Twenty20 franchise are far from guaranteed

Daniel Brettig25-Jul-2011

Matthew Hayden will definitely play for the Brisbane Heat, but his investment in the team is less certain•Queensland Cricket

Matthew Hayden’s plans to become a part-owner of the Brisbane Heat Twenty20 franchise are far from guaranteed, despite the air of inevitability that hung over the announcement of his signature to play for the team in next summer’s expanded Big Bash League. So far only the Melbourne Renegades and the Sydney Thunder have got approval to seek minority private ownership of up to 49%, a process that is currently being overseen by the financial services company Credit Suisse.Other teams are presently allowed to negotiate unofficially with potential investors, but that moratorium will end once the Sydney and Melbourne deals are settled. In addition to playing, Hayden wants to align his company The Hayden Way with the Heat as part of what he breathlessly called “a leisure-tainment and entertainment package that has never yet been seen on our shores in cricket”.However Cricket Australia will have to be satisfied, when the time for private investment in the Heat is allowed, that Hayden’s company will provide a worthwhile return.”We don’t know what the timing is going to be, and it is subject to Cricket Australia approval,” a CA spokesman said. “At this stage The Hayden Way is keen, Brisbane is keen, and Matthew Hayden will be first in the queue to be a private investor in the Heat.”Speaking in Brisbane, Hayden made the case for using T20 to secure cricket’s future in Australia by appealing to a wider audience. He also said he had lost interest in international cricket against nations other than England and India, a stark statement from a CA board member.”There’s a lot of things cricket can’t control, the Future Tours Program being one of those, however we can control our domestic content,” Hayden said. “From a commercial point of view most definitely I see this being an enormous success, but it’s key is if it gets mums, dads, families coming to the cricket, enjoying a three-hour proposition, with not the trinkets and the charms but a true value proposition.”I love cricket and have been inspired by cricket my whole life. I love the baggy green, I love what it stands for. However short of the Ashes, and potentially the Indian summer, I’ve said for a long time that I’m largely un-invested in that particular competition. So for me having now first-hand witnessed what that [T20] means as an entertainment proposition, firstly in the IPL and now within the franchise, I know this is going to re-engage our fan base.”If kids, mums and dads and families rock up, then that is an investment they make which adds to them participating in our great game, then we’ll have done everything, both commercially and from a participation point of view.”I think most definitely people are losing interest within the tournaments. I’ll give you a prime example of that, the ICC champions trophy. Australia won that tournament, the first time that trophy’s ever been in the cabinet, and yet do we know about it, we had some idea but it wasn’t the same impact as what it could make. The World Cup is incredibly important within the game, but there are challenges in the landscape, it is a very cluttered landscape.”Australia’s T20 competition had previously been state-based, something Hayden said was part of the pathway towards the national team and not something he was interested in participating in as a player or investor. But, in a somewhat convoluted argument, he also reckoned that his return to the domestic scene would help to educate young players with his many years of experience.”The reason I’ve never been interested in this tournament until now is I’ve always seen it as a pathways program,” Hayden said. “It’s been sat within the stakeholders of the game being the states, and every spot I took up was an opportunity for a youngster to come in and take up that same spot, and I’d been a beneficiary of those wonderful pathway programs that have existed within our country.”Now however this is a different proposition, this is an entertainment package, and it is going to, whether we like it or not, and it already has, competed with all the other franchise sports, and there is going to be some rationalisation over the next two years. I’m looking forward to being part of seeing what best fits for cricket.”When you lose someone like a [Adam] Gilchrist or a [Shane] Warne or a [Justin] Langer or the Waughs, all these players, you lose 20, 30, 40 years of cricket experience. This is why I love the strategic direction of having guys like Darren Lehmann investing back into our great game, because there you’ve got a passionate cricket love who has got an incredible skill set as a player but can also pass information down to our youngsters, which is key to developing any culture.”John Buchanan said when he was coach of Australia and Queensland that his ideal scenario was to become redundant in that role, and he did that by lifting up the younger players into the more iconic positions. I think I can add that value to the dressing room as well.”

Pollard, Buttler take Somerset through

A barnstorming 66-run partnership between Kieron Pollard and Jos Buttler helped Somerset book their place for Finals Day for the third year running with a five-wicket win at Trent Bridge

The Report by George Dobell at Trent Bridge07-Aug-2011

Kieron Pollard thrashed four sixes in his unbeaten 47•Getty Images

Kieron Pollard will probably never win over all his critics. Some doubt his technique; some doubt his temperament and some are just plain jealous. But whatever the 24-year-old Trinidadian Pollard does or doesn’t achieve in international cricket or even at first-class level, he really is a devastating Twenty20 cricketer. Here, in partnership with the equally impressive Jos Buttler, Pollard helped Somerset snatch victory from a Nottinghamshire team that had been in control throughout this quarter-final. As a result it is Somerset and not Nottinghamshire that will be at Edgbaston for Finals Day on August 27.The pair thumped 66 runs in 26 balls, with Pollard’s savagery complemented by Buttler’s subtlety, as Somerset sealed a six-wicket victory with five deliveries to spare. The pair thrashed six sixes and six fours between them as a Nottinghamshire attack, immaculate up to that point, suddenly wilted under pressure when it mattered most.To be fair to the hosts, batsmen such as Pollard and Buttler, players who hit decent deliveries to or even over the boundary, can intimidate bowlers. Buttler moves across his stumps and plays the scoop shot over fine leg so effectively that even yorkers can be hit for six, while Pollard’s immense strength and bat speed mean there is no margin for error for any bowler. Even Andre Adams, so often the leader of this Notts attack, was plundered for 20 in an over as his attempted yorkers became juicy full tosses. And no-one hits a full toss harder – or further – than Pollard.Perhaps Nottinghamshire really lost this game between the 10th and 14th overs of their own innings. While they accumulated nicely enough to score 32 runs in those five overs, they lacked the power hitting that so benefited Somerset. Subtlety is all well and good, but Twenty20 cricket is more about the sledgehammer than the suggestion.Until that point, Alex Hales had been progressing well. The 22-year-old, who really must be close to selection for one of the England limited-overs squads, played particularly well off the back foot, hitting three sixes including one pull off Pollard that cleared the Fox Road Stand.Until Chris Read, a hugely under-rated limited-overs ‘finisher’, came to the crease in the 17th over, however, no-one else in the Notts side could bat with the required urgency. Samit Patel and Adam Voges scored at a run a ball, which just isn’t enough, and Adams’ perky contribution came too late to make a difference.Somerset were not, perhaps, absolutely at their best with the ball. But their fielding was excellent – head and shoulders above anything seen in Saturday’s quarter-final at Grace Road, while their spinners ensured Nottinghamshire’s total never grew unassailable. Arul Suppiah, in particular, impressed in conceding just 13 from his three overs.Still, the way Nottinghamshire’s bowlers began, it seemed Somerset wouldn’t get anywhere near their target. Luke Fletcher, who earlier this season was suspended when a night of drinking went a little too far, bowled an immaculate first spell. Fletcher, ignoring the overdone fashion for endless slower balls and variations, produced yorker after yorker, eventually forcing Marcus Trescothick into a desperate scoop shot that resulted in a brilliant one-handed catch by Adams at fine leg.Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego kept Somerset in the chase but, when the former drove to mid-off and the latter was drawn down the wicket and beaten by turn, it left Somerset requiring 64 from the final 31 balls.Perhaps, had Riki Wessels hung on to a desperately tough chance at point offered by Buttler when the batsman had just 14, Notts might have held on. But, as it was, Buttler and Pollard brought up their 50 stand in just 18 balls, with Pollard driving Patel for one huge six into the top of the Radcliffe Road Stand and Buttler scooping a perfectly respectable Darren Pattinson delivery for six over fine leg. If Notts looked a little ragged in the closing moments, it’s only because the batting tore them apart. There was just a moment of silliness between Pollard and Fletcher, when the pair seemed to barge one another and exchange harsh words, but hands were shaken and apologies made afterwards and it would be a shame if a minor incident were to detract from another highly entertaining – and high quality – game of cricket. This result leaves Nottinghamshire with just an outside chance of CB40 success to sustain any trophy hopes in the closing weeks of the season. As a result, Voges now heads back to Australia so Notts hope to replace him as an overseas player within the next few days. Darren Bravo is understood to be in line to replace him.Somerset, meanwhile, could yet win all three trophies. After their unfortunate finish to the 2010 season, few would resent them some success. But, before Somerset supporters grow too excited about the prospect of the Champions League, it’s worth remembering that they would, almost certainly, have to do without Trescothick, Kieswetter, Pollard, Thomas and Kartik if they qualified. All are likely to be either unavailable or required by other teams.

Wessels sparkles on day of wickets

Durham, their title challenge under pressure after Lancashire knocked them off top spot last week, face a difficult task if they are to emerge from this match with a win after 2010 champions Nottinghamshire let it be known that while the Championship may have slipped from their grasp they can still play a role in determining which way this year’s contest goes.Nottinghamshire, who restricted Somerset to just six points from their rain-affected draw at Taunton last week, made Durham suffer this time as Riki Wessels and Andre Adams mastered difficult conditions to leave Phil Mustard’s side to chase a challenging 321 in the fourth innings.Wessels scored 84 from 68 deliveries, his highest score since joining Notts earlier in the season, before Adams, batting with his customary all-or-nothing approach, hit seven fours and two sixes in a 48-ball unbeaten 53, an innings that may have taken the game away from Durham, who had done themselves no favours earlier in the day by failing to secure a single batting bonus point.Adams, whose 68 wickets with his canny swing bowling were the key to Notts winning the title in 2010, has been a revelation with the bat this season. The 36-year-old New Zealander, who had managed only two half-centuries in four seasons at Trent Bridge before this one, has hit five during the current campaign and his aggregate of 508 first-class runs includes a staggering 174 in sixes, of which he has hit 29.In an illustration of his phenomenal hitting power, he managed to clear the enormous boundary on the Fox Road side with one huge blow off Callum Thorp that sailed over the head of a hapless boundary fielder and landed several rows back.Mitch Claydon finished with five wickets for 54 but Durham missed their absentees, with Steve Harmison, who might have been deadly on this track, missing through injury and Graham Onions and Ben Stokes on England duty.At the start of the day, Durham had been their own worst enemies after resuming their innings at three down for 44. Dale Benkenstein and Ian Blackwell put on 91 for the fifth wicket, yet from 135 for 4 they somehow failed to pick up a single batting point.Within two balls of the start they were four down without addition. After Luke Fletcher had completed the over left unfinished on Monday evening, Andre Adams fed Paul Collingwood a gentle away-swinger that the former England all-rounder, with negligible foot movement, edged to third slip. Thus Benkenstein and Blackwell were left with a substantial rebuilding job on a pitch that, while no minefield, was not without hazards, mainly caused by the inconsistency of bounce. It might have prompted some batsmen to proceed with caution but these two decided attack was the better option and had added 91 in 20.1 overs before the former pushed at a ball from Fletcher that climbed on him and Steven Mullaney took the catch at second slip, diving across first, denying Benkenstein a half-century.Mullaney then dropped a chance offered by Phil Mustard on 12 for which he again needed to fling himself. It was a difficult one but he had both hands on it, and Durham would have been 149 for 5.But it was a let-off rather wasted by the visitors with more than a hint of carelessness given that this is such a crucial match in their quest to take the title back from Nottinghamshire. The guilty party was Blackwell, who had looked ominously well set when he completed a run-a-ball half-century but, with lunch only minutes away and Notts turning for the first time to Graeme White, somewhat threw his wicket away, giving the charge to his fellow left-armer spinner’s sixth delivery but succeeding only in smacking the ball straight back at him.White took a stunning catch, but then he needed to; had he missed he would probably have woken up in the Queen’s Medical Centre, minus several teeth. The 24-year-old former Northamptonshire bowler is given few opportunities in first-class cricket. Indeed, this is only his 13th first-class match and he is playing here only because Samit Patel is unavailable. Yet, despite being under pressure not to waste his chance, he produced an intelligent spell, limited to just 32 balls but yielding three wickets as he and Adams combined to finish off the Durham innings.White found some turn to have Mustard caught off bat and pad, then Adams moved the ball away enough for Mark Wood and then Mitch Claydon to edge into the slips before Callum Thorp, having taken a lavish swing-and-miss at White, was so casual about getting back into his crease that Chris Read was granted as easy a stumping as he will make. With only five more runs needed for a batting point, it was a brainless dismissal. From Durham’s viewpoint, Notts’ second innings started in the best possible way when Alex Hales, the first-innings centurion, fell first ball, following one from Claydon that climbed on him and edging to wicketkeeper Mustard. Karl Turner, released by Durham last season, perished to the same combination, driving loosely.Darren Bravo, as in the first innings, shaped as if he would make an impact, but after a relatively watchful 30, hit straight to Benkenstein at mid-off.Steven Mullaney fell to another ball that climbed from the pavilion end as he nudged a catch to second slip but Wessels took a heavy toll on Ian Blackwell as well as the debutant Mark Wood, who at least could claim a measure of revenge, although only by association, when Benkenstein held on to a second catch – this time a brilliant, leaping one-handed effort – at midwicket.Paul Franks was bowled by Claydon, as was White, who offered no shot, but just as Durham began to contemplate a target in the 250 range, Adams began to change the picture. With support at first from Chris Read, who became a fifth victim for Claydon when he slashed at a wide delivery to be caught behind, and then Darren Pattinson, who added a valuable 15 after being dropped by the ‘keeper on one, the veteran all-rounder did enough damage perhaps to have ended Durham’s hopes of a third title in four years.

Swann and Bopara star in stand-in roles

Graeme Swann’s first match as England captain could not, statistically, have gone any better, as England rampaged to their first ten-wicket victory in the Twenty20 format

Graeme Swann’s first match as England captain could not, statistically, have gone any better, as England rampaged to their first ten-wicket victory in the Twenty20 format. Likewise, his one big decision on the night also paid handsome statistical dividends, as Ravi Bopara’s medium-pacers were entrusted with a full quota of four overs, and responded with an England record analysis of 4 for 10.”If you give someone a chance to bowl at the death who never normally does it, and he gets 4 for 10 in 3.4 overs, I’ll take all the plaudits, thank you very much,” joked Swann, who claimed his decision had been swayed by the hold that Bopara had over his batting in practice. “It takes a world-class death bowler to get me out three times in every net. I’m just glad I got the chance to be captain to show everyone how good he is.”Joking aside, England’s performance on the night was ruthless. At 42 for 0 after 24 balls, West Indies briefly looked capable of putting up a fight, but once Samit Patel had made the first breakthrough at the end of the Powerplay, they went on to lose all ten of their wickets at a rate of almost one an over. It was a state of affairs that left Bopara feeling “embarrassed” to have swiped a record that will be hard for his more regular bowling colleagues to overhaul, but in terms of his career progression, his evening’s work was another important step in his allround development. From the moment he chipped into the Oval Test victory with a largely forgotten 44 not out against India, Bopara has enjoyed the most productive month of his career since his three hundreds in a row against West Indies in the spring of 2009. His ODI series against India included a gutsy 96 at Lord’s and 37 not out from 22 balls in partnership with Jonny Bairstow at Cardiff, and now this performance – while of spurious merit against a team as outclassed as West Indies proved to be – could yet be significant when it comes to the World Twenty20 on the slow, low decks of Sri Lanka next September.”I think medium pacers in Twenty20 cricket, in the middle overs, are very important,” said Bopara. “Like spinners you have to put pace on the ball, try to hit the ball, and on big fields like this they can be very handy. I fancy myself bowling in the subcontinent, where it can be quite low and difficult to get away at times, so hopefully I’ll get a chance, especially if Graeme is captain.”Bopara, however, knows that a lot can happen between now and then, which is a lesson he has learnt since that last run of international form two years ago. “You can never bank on being around, you have to keep performing,” he said. “I just want to take one step at a time and not get too far ahead of myself, because that happened when I got those three hundreds in a row. I got a bit ahead of myself, saying that in the next five games, I wanted to make it eight in a row. And when you get above your station that’s when you fall quite hard.”But I definitely feel more of an England player now, especially over the last month. A lot of it is in my own mind, because it’s easy when things are going well, to have a good mindset. It’s when things ain’t going so well, that’s when it’s very tough. But that 40 in the Test freed me up and I played with quite a free spirit in the one-dayers. I said to myself, back yourself and hit the ball which I’ve tried to do for Essex for a number of years. I’m glad it’s come off, and long may it continue.”Swann harbours similar sentiments about his Twenty20 captaincy. With Stuart Broad unlikely to feature again this year, and Eoin Morgan having undergone shoulder surgery, there’s a very real prospect of his role being extended into the one-off fixture at Eden Gardens on October 29. “I’d like to think so, if we get to that point and those guys aren’t involved,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll do a good job on Sunday and my name will still be in the hat, because I enjoyed every moment of today.”Swann particularly enjoyed the vocal support of a packed 17,000 crowd, who defied the chilly conditions and the odd circumstances of the series to get fully behind their team – to an extent that England are not used to receiving this summer. “It’s the first crowd we’ve played in front of in England for the last two months who’ve really been on our side,” he said. “The difference between the noise when we took wickets and hit boundaries, and the fever pitch for the Indian batsmen [in the ODIs] was great to behold. A lot of that has to do with how well we’ve played this summer, and hopefully we’ll continue to do that.”Darren Sammy, West Indies’ defeated captain, took the result on the chin, and recognised that – even with a glut of inexperienced players on their side – England are a formidable unit at present. “They are No. 1 and they play like No 1,” he said. “All the guys, even on debuts, come in fairly experienced from county cricket. It shows in their game, they’re quite confident and that’s a page we can take from their book.”We had a great start but the moment we let them go we didn’t bounce back,” Sammy added. “We can point out areas we went wrong and encourage them, but we were playing the No. 1 team. at the moment. Whatever they do and whoever comes in just tends to fit in the team right away. We have our goals and we want to win cricket matches, but this was about seeing who could compete at this level.”

Nove empates: Com Bahia, Ceará, Vitória, Audax Italiano, Sport, Palmeiras, Fluminense, Vasco e Volta Redonda.

Seis derrotas: São Paulo, América-MG, Cruzeiro, Vasco (duas vezes), Fluminense e Flamengo.

Opiniões de especialistas:
Vinícius Perazzini – Editor do site do LANCE!
