Andy Flower, England team director, has kept up the pressure on Samit Patel to reach acceptable fitness levels if he is to achieve his ambition of a Test debut for England against Sri Lanka in Galle later this month.Flower regards Patel as a genuine contender to bat at No. 6 and strengthen England’s slow-bowling ranks as they seek to improve on their disastrous 3-0 whitewash against Pakistan in the UAE. But as the bulk of England’s squad prepared to leave Heathrow, he issued a subtle reminder of the fitness standards required to survive the sapping conditions of Sri Lanka at one of the most humid times of the year.”I think he’s still got significant work to do on the fitness front but he’s inching in the right direction,” Flower said. “The heat and humidity will be a significant factor for the bowling side certainly and then on concentration levels because fatigue affects everyone. Fitness levels and how we react will be very important.”The makeup of England’s bowling attack will influence whether Patel will make his Test debut in Sri Lanka. Flower and England captain Andrew Strauss will have to decide whether to continue with two specialist spinners, a policy that served them well against Pakistan in the UAE, revert back to three quick bowlers, or play five bowlers – something England have been reluctant to do but an option Flower has not ruled out.”Everyone in this squad is a serious challenger for a Test place,” Flower said as England prepared to fly out to Sri Lanka ahead of the first of two three-day warm-up matches on March 15. “Patel provides the option of flexibility for us. If we played three quicks and Graeme Swann, then he could bat at six and give you that angle to bowl into the rough if we needed to. That is a possibility.”If the conditions determine that two spinners should play, they can take up a lot of the slack on the workload front. It doesn’t necessary mean you have to play five bowlers. We saw two and two work effectively in the UAE and I still think with two specialist spinners taking up a lot of the overs you can still take 20 wickets with four bowlers.”England, who could begin the Sri Lanka series below South Africa in the Test rankings, also have James Tredwell, the 30-year-old Kent offspinner, in their squad. A surprise selection, he is only likely to feature through injury to Swann. “James is an experienced cricketer who we know we can rely on,” Flower said. “Both types of spin are important and we’ve covered both.”He sounded unconcerned that Tredwell has not played since the end of last season. “When you’ve played as long as Tredwell has, it won’t take long to get him up to speed.”Tredwell is one of seven England players that have flown out early to Sri Lanka to acclimatise. Ian Bell, reserve wicketkeeper Steven Davies, Monty Panesar, Patel, Matt Prior and Andrew Strauss have also travelled early for two skill sessions a day and fitness training.Strauss is looking to find form after a lean period in Test cricket: his last century came in Brisbane in November 2010. But Flower sees the improvements Strauss made towards the end of the Pakistan series as signs of returning form. “To survive and thrive you have to be adaptable and he showed some of that adaptability in that last Test,” Flower said. “He’s working at those skills and methods right now and he’s got two three-day games to get some time in the middle. With his experience I expect him to do well.”Flower said that Strauss was not helped by an extended break between the end of the season and start of the Pakistan series but that a similar scenario was unlikely happen again and Strauss was keen to lead from the front once more. “He’s a very experienced cricketer and you know that he’s very level-headed in his response to both the highs and lows associated with playing for England. I know he will be working hard and smart to get his game in order.”Strauss will return to the England top order alongside Alastair Cook, who, along with Kevin Pietersen, found form in the 4-0 ODI series win against Pakistan. Their performances and the experience gained against Pakistan’s barrage of spinners is cause for optimism for Flower. “The good thing about playing people like Seed Ajmal is that as you’re exposed to them you should get better, that’s how we grow, by putting ourselves in tougher situations that we’d normally come across.”Playing in subcontinental conditions against good spinners will without doubt add to our batsman’s growth. So I should expect our batsman to be better able to deal with Sri Lanka’s spinners.”

وتعادل توتنهام على أرضه ووسط جماهيره يوم أمس الأربعاء، سلبيًا في مباراة الإياب وكان قد خسر 1-0 أمام ميلان في الذهاب قبل 3 أسابيع على ملعب “سان سيرو” ليتأهل الروسونيري إلى دور الثمانية.

ولكن كانت هناك حالة غضب تنتاب مهاجم توتنهام ريتشارليسون بعد المباراة عقب مشاركته كبديل قبل 20 دقيقة فقط من صافرة النهاية، ولم يستطع تقديم أي مساعدة لضيق الوقت.

وأضاف: “فجأة، وضعني ستيليني (المدرب المؤقت لحين عودة كونتي بعد عملية المرارة) على مقاعد البدلاء، أمام ولفرهامبتون ودفع بي في 5 دقائق فقط، لقد سألت عن السبب ولم يخبروني بأي شيء”.

The visitors had started the third day on 55 for 5 requiring a further 129 runs to make Essex bat again but they never looked likely to make a fight of it, losing their remaining wickets well before lunch to be bowled out for 146.Graham Napier, who is celebrating his benefit year, did the major damage second time around, finishing with five for 58. It was only the sixth time in his career that the 32-year-old had claimed five wickets or more in an innings and helped his county to start their campaign with a 23-point haul.The overnight pair of Ian Cockbain and Will Gidman provided some resistance when they resumed against Napier and David Masters, adding a brisk 41. But then Napier struck to remove Gidman for a top-scoring 39 by trapping him leg before on the back foot. That was the start of a spell in which Gloucestershire lost four wickets while adding just 10 runs.Cockbain followed Gidman back to the pavilion in the next over from Masters when he was caught behind by James Foster, before Napier completed his five-wicket haul. He did so by having James Fuller caught by Maurice Chambers at mid-off, the batsman mistiming an attempted pull whilst still seeking to get off the mark.Masters was then replaced by Greg Smith, who turned to his offspin to claim his first wicket for Essex following his move from Derbyshire. His victim was Paul Muchall as the batsman prodded to short leg where Billy Godleman took a fine catch.There were a few brief flourishes from the last-wicket pair of Ed Young and Ian Saxelby before the introduction of teenager Tymal Mills was to bring the visitors resistance to a close. Tão elogiada pelo técnico Diego Aguirre, a zaga do São Paulo protagonizou um lance bizarro que resultou no gol do Fluminense. Depois de um lançamento errado dos cariocas, o zagueiro Anderson Martins cabeceou para trás, enquanto o goleiro Sidão corria de encontrou a bola. Com o gol aberto, a bola rolou devagar até o fundo da rede.

Poucos minutos depois de entrar em campo, o lateral Régis recolocou o Tricolor do Morumbi na partida. Sozinho e cercado de três marcadores, o camisa 33 partiu para o ataque, perdeu a bola para o lateral Ayrton Lucas, a recuperou na linha de fundo e cruzou na cabeça de Tréllez. O colombiano apenas teve o trabalho de estufar a rede defendida por Júlio César.

Vitória escapa nos minutos finais
Quase no fim da partida, o Fluminense teve uma oportunidade de ouro para matar a partida e sair vitorioso do Morumbi. Depois de uma bela triangulação do time de Marcelo Oliveira, Matheus Alessandro saiu na cara do gol e carimbou a trava de Sidão. No rebote, Dodi parou em Anderson Martins.

Which captain in world cricket would not want to be Graeme Smith? The South Africa captain seems to have it all – a team that has performed to match its reputation of being cricket’s best travelling bunch, a clutch of experienced players who come to the party more often than not, youth that sprouts up at every corner and most of all, a bowling attack that is unquestionably dynamic, explosive and effective.”He’s said that he is probably more happy with this attack than he ever has been,” Russell Domingo, South Africa’s assistant coach, said of Smith. “He’s got all facets covered. He’s got Vernon [Philander] who is skilfull and controlled, he’s got Dale [Steyn] who is aggressive, he’s got Morne [Morne] who brings a different dimension, he’s got a lesgpinner [Imran Tahir], he’s got the experience of [Jacques] Kallis.”Having all those things would not matter much if Smith did not know how to use them. So far, his management of the attack has been exceptional as he has alternated their roles as aggressors and containers shrewdly. “A captain is generally going to be as good as the players are, or as good as your bowlers are. At the moment Graeme’s got a really good bowling attack to work with,” Domingo said.”He can set fields according to plans because they are skilled enough to execute those plans. Maybe when the bowlers aren’t that skillful or mature or experienced, it’s not that easy to stick to a plan.” Smith has had the luxury of, for example, being able to put a man at deep square leg to wait for a Brendon McCullum pull and being able to instruct his bowlers to bang it in short to him.The other most distinct individual attack Smith has led was the one with the new ball-pairing of Shaun Pollock and Makhaya Ntini through the mid 2000s. The pair was also a good mixture of accuracy and attack but did not have a key third element that Smith’s seamers today have – a spinner who does more than hold up an end. “As a unit, this is probably one of the top bowling units that South Africa has produced in a while because there is no bowler that you can target because everybody is at you all the time. Everybody knows what is expected and has got the skills to execute it,” Domingo said.While Tahir has not had the success he has been craving, there is an unsung heroism about his presence in the side. South Africa simply they have another wicket-taking option. Their belief in Tahir has resulted in him being willing to change certain aspects of his game and learn to play a more defensive role if needed. “Ultimately he’s doing his job,” Smith said, after the Hamilton win. “I’m hoping that when we get on that real turner he’ll come to the party then and pick up some crucial wickets. But for the moment I think he’s doing a good job and we all still have a lot of faith in him and we’re comfortable with where we sit with him.”Wickets have mostly fallen in the direction of Vernon Philander, which has left the rest of the attack with very little to fight over. Philander’s extraordinary success – 45 wickets in six Tests at an average of 13.6 – has been a key part of South Africa’s overall ascendency. Domingo said although Philander’s numbers have belied belief at times, they are not all that unexpected. “He has been an outstanding bowler in domestic cricket for three years so it’s no surprise that he has done so well,” Domingo said. “He’s got an unbelievable amount of skill, really good control, can bowl a good bouncer, is up mid 130s and a lot of self confidence which is a great recipe for fast bowler. He has got controlled aggression which is great.”New Zealand’s batting line-up has also made the South African attack’s job easier. With only five specialist batsmen and a heavy reliance on at least two of them, McCullum and Ross Taylor, batting has emerged as New Zealand’s weaker suit. “We do think that if we make early inroads we can put their lower order under pressure with the pace,” Domingo said. “We see it as a perceived weakness that we can exploit. There’s a lot of pressure on three or four of their batters to put in big performances and it is an area we can exploit.”

Faf du Plessis has been asked by Cricket South Africa not to play for Somerset in the Friends Life T20. He will now stay at home and play for South Africa A against Sri Lanka A and join South Africa’s Twenty20 tour to Zimbabwe.”The period that Somerset want him for is when we have some tours of our own,” Mohammad Moosajee, South Africa team manager, told ESPNcricinfo. “Faf features in the selectors’ plans for those tours so it would not be possible for him to go.”Du Plessis has played 21 ODIs for South Africa and is currently taking part in the IPL, having been signed by Chennai Super Kings for $120,000 in 2011. He will also play for South Africa A against Sri Lanka A in June before South Africa’s T20 side travel to Zimbabwe for an unofficial tri-series that also features Bangladesh.The loss of du Plessis is another blow to Somerset’s plans for the Flt20. They signed Albie Morkel and hoped to bring in Chris Gayle as a second overseas player. But Gayle reneged on his deal and agreed to be available for West Indies’ ODI series against England, potentially making his international comeback after more than a year’s absence.Morkel, who will not be part of the four-day matches against Sri Lanka A, has been given the green light by CSA to play for Somerset. If Morkel is selected for South Africa’s T20 squad to tour Zimbabwe, though, Moosajee said Somerset would have to release him for that period.Along with losing Gayle, Somerset have a string of injuries with captain Marcus Trescothick out with an ankle injury and only 12 fit players available at the moment. They were forced to cancel a second XI match with Gloucestershire this week due to a lack of players.Somerset were also asked by CSA to limit the workload of Vernon Philander, the South African bowler who has taken 18 wickets in four first-class matches.Brian Rose, Somerset’s director of cricket, said he “thought there was a possibility” that du Plessis would be barred from joining them. “We’re still exploring the market but I think I must have run over a whole road of black cats.” Along with Trescothick, Somerset are currently without bowlers Adam Dibble, Gemaal Hussain, Steve Kirby and batsman Jos Buttler.Somerset will keep a close eye on Pakistan’s potential series against Australia.
