Wasteful Leics run up against Croft again

Leicestershire supporters at Grace Road endured a frustrating day where, for the second time in three days, Steven Croft proved a game adversary

Sports fans in Leicester had a good weekend. On Saturday, Leicester City confirmed their survival in the Premier League and Leicester Tigers beat local rivals Northampton to qualify for rugby’s Premiership playoffs. So it was perhaps a little too much to ask the county’s cricketers to join the upbeat mood of the city and supporters at Grace Road endured a frustrating day where, for the second time in three days, Steven Croft proved a game adversary.Croft’s 70 in 39 balls saw Lancashire to victory in the opening NatWest T20 Blast encounter between these sides on Friday. Here, against the same opposition with a red ball, Croft again lifted his side from trouble to steer Lancashire to a healthy total on a day of tricky batting conditions.Generous cloud cover, a green-tinged wicket and a temperature warm enough to help the ball swing produced plenty of help for the bowlers and Leicestershire should be disappointed at having missed a chance to dismiss their opponents cheaply. They did not bowl well enough. From 156 for 5, Lancashire more than doubled the score for the next three wickets, chiefly thanks to Croft who made a dashing fifty in 76 balls before playing carefully with the tail to end the day on the brink of a first century of the season. His sixth-wicket partnership of 73 with Jordan Clark was made at 4.33 runs an over and turned the day towards the visitors in 17 overs before tea. Clark’s loose drive ended the stand first ball after the break.Croft was busier than his coach Ashley Giles, who was pacing around the ground. He took three boundaries in three balls of Ben Raine, all square on the off side despite the presence of a sweeper, and was then squared up to a fuller straighter ball and got a thick edge fine of third man for a couple more to bring up a second half-century of the season. Just before the new ball, he showed his one-day touch by late cutting Tom Wells fine of third man.In former Leicestershire bowler Nathan Buck, who biffed two fours down the ground off Rob Taylor, he found steady company to add the third fifty partnership of the day, for the eighth wicket. Lancashire have a very handy total indeed.Ahead of this game Leicestershire’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, said his side had to start winning the key moments to turn their competitive start to the season – including a battling response to draw at home to Glamorgan and almost winning at Kent – into something more tangible. The first morning here, with a swinging new ball, could be considered such an event. That Leicestershire only had two wickets by lunch would be concluded as defeat. But success was within their grasp. Quite literally. Three catches were dropped in the first session, all at first slip. Raine was the unlucky bowler all three times. Mark Cosgrove, Leicestershire’s captain, put down a sitter that should have removed Paul Horton for 20. Cosgrove then replaced himself with Taylor, only for Taylor to shell just as easy a chance from Ashwell Prince, and another tougher chance by his left shoulder from Prince again.Taylor completed his hat-trick by missing his most difficult chance, low to his left with one hand, as Charlie Shreck took the second new ball in the gloaming. At least Leicestershire took full bowling bonus points just before the close. They nibbled the ball around all day but without the consistency to put their visitors under consistent pressure. It was perhaps indicative of their attack’s inexperience. And perhaps its modest pace too. The new ball swung and seamed – one from Clint McKay nibbled down the slope plumb into Clark’s box and sent him crawling painfully towards square square leg.McKay took the opening wicket, in the 13th over, as Karl Brown edged a drive behind, but the bowling was thereafter a little short and the second breakthrough only came when Alviro Petersen – one of three Kolpaks in the Lancashire side with Test match experience – played a very weak dab just outside off to also nick to the keeper. One of the better balls of the day, an inswinger from Shreck, trapped Prince lbw and Taylor, the left-armer, moved one back into Tom Bailey who played on.

A provável formação do Palmeiras nesta quarta-feira deve ter: Weverton; Marcos Rocha, Gustavo Gómez, Vitor Hugo e Diogo Barbosa; Felipe Melo, Bruno Henrique e Gustavo Scarpa; Dudu, Willian e Deyverson.

A Chapecoense, adversária do Verdão, protagoniza a pior campanha do torneio, somando apenas 16 pontos.

Silva, Prasad put Sri Lanka in charge

Sri Lanka took control of the Galle Test, reducing Pakistan to 118 for 5 at stumps on the third day and left them facing a steep climb on a pitch with plenty of help for the spinners

Arnold: Prasad and Pradeep complement each other

Sri Lanka took control of the Galle Test, reducing Pakistan to 118 for 5 at stumps on the third day and leaving them facing a steep climb on a pitch with plenty of help for the spinners. When rain brought play to a close eight overs early, Pakistan were 182 runs adrift of Sri Lanka’s first-innings total of 300. That total was made possible by a dogged 125 from Kaushal Silva, who held the innings together in the morning even as wickets kept falling at the other end. When Sri Lanka lost their last wicket halfway into the post-lunch session, the match appeared in the balance. It only took Dhammika Prasad ten balls to swing the advantage firmly the home side’s way. Last ball of his first over, Mohammad Hafeez chased a full outswinger and nicked to third slip; fourth ball of his second, Ahmed Shehzad played back to a length ball and fell over as it nipped back and pinged him on the front pad, in front of middle stump. Shehzad chose not to review, wisely, as ball-tracking showed umpire Richard Illingworth’s decision would stand with the ball appearing to clip the outside half of leg stump.Rangana Herath has had the wood over Azhar Ali, and had dismissed him six times in Tests before he came in to bat today. Azhar was ill at ease against his flight and dip throughout his stay at the crease, and it was no surprise when he shuffled indecisively across his crease to an arm ball that beat his inside edge and smacked his pad right in front.Post-tea, Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq staged a brief recovery and showed positive intent during a fourth-wicket partnership of 51, with Younis in particular looking to use his feet against the spinners and put pressure back on them. He got to 47 with a number of punchy blows – including a muscular six off Dilruwan Perera that smacked into the top of the sightscreen – before perishing by the same methods that had brought him his runs. Dilruwan switched angle to around the wicket, and straightened an offbreak past Younis’ inside edge when he came down the track and looked to drive inside-out with an angled bat; 86 for 4.Pakistan had added only 10 to their total when Nuwan Pradeep sucked Misbah into driving at a fullish ball in the corridor that shaped away ever so slightly. Pushing in front of his body with a minimal front-foot stride, he could only edge thickly to the left of Kumar Sangakkara, who took a terrific catch diving to his left from first slip.At that point Pakistan were tottering, still 55 short of the follow-on mark. Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed batted through to stumps and minimised the chances of falling short of that target, but Pakistan were still in ample danger of conceding a big enough lead for Sri Lanka to win despite all the time lost to rain.In that light, Silva’s efforts in the morning were priceless. He only added 45 to his overnight score despite batting through the first session and close to ten overs of the second. His solid presence at one end meant Pakistan were only able to chip away at the middle and lower order rather than blast their way through.Pakistan’s bowling was persistent and incisive right through. The morning began with Yasir Shah ripping his legbreaks from a dangerous length and Wahab Riaz hustling in with pace and menace from the other. Wahab made the first breakthrough of the morning when he bowled Angelo Mathews from around the wicket. He found the perfect length, full but not quite drive-able, to exploit Mathews’ short, almost non-existent front-foot stride and resultant angled bat, and kiss his inside edge onto the stumps.Sri Lanka’s score inched along, with the bowlers maintaining constricting lines, and Silva had only made three runs in 27 balls before he put Yasir away for two fours in one over, driving him with the turn through the covers and against it through midwicket. Dinesh Chandimal, similarly becalmed till then, struck three fours in two overs from Zulfiqar Babar.Just when Sri Lanka seemed to have grabbed some of the momentum, the second new ball pegged them back. Pakistan took it as soon as it was due, but continued with Babar’s left-arm spin, contending that the shine would add extra skid to his arm ball. Babar struck Silva on the front pad with one such ball, with height possibly saving the batsman, and produced another lbw shout against Chandimal in his next over, before bowling him when he unwisely tried to make room and cut.Junaid Khan, keeping it tight without quite showing the incision of his fellow left-arm seamer Wahab, nearly got on the scorecard when he found the edge of Kithuruwan Vithanage’s flashing, crooked bat outside off, but the ball flew too quickly for the airborne Younis Khan to grab it at second slip.Pakistan didn’t have to wait too long for Vithanage’s wicket, though, and like Lahiru Thirimanne on the second day, he too fell to a soft dismissal, and he too fell to that scourge of left-handed batsmen, Hafeez. The ball that got him was an innocuous low full-toss, which he popped straight back to the bowler. It was Hafeez’s 51st Test wicket, and his 35th of a left-handed batsman.Yasir had looked the most threatening Pakistan bowler but his first wicket only came when he had Dilruwan caught behind with a spitting legbreak two balls into the post-lunch session. The end didn’t take too long coming, in terms of runs, though Prasad made Pakistan wait a little longer than they would have liked with a 23-ball duck, before Silva was ninth out, gloving an attempted sweep to the keeper.

Yorks quarter-final hopes take a hit

Yorkshire’s fading hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the NatWest T20 Blast were dealt another blow when they lost by four wickets to bottom-of-the-table Derbyshire in the North Group match at Chesterfield. They never recovered from losing three wickets to the offspin of Derbyshire captain Wes Durston in the first five overs and although Glenn Maxwell scored 45 from 29 balls and Jack Leaning 37 from 22, the visitors could only manage 146 for 9.Hamish Rutherford smashed 40 from 24 balls in front of a sell-out Queen’s Park crowd of 4500 and Wayne Madsen scored 41 from 38 balls as Derbyshire reached their target in the 19th over to end a run of seven consecutive home defeats against Yorkshire in T20 cricket.Yorkshire promoted Adil Rashid to open in place of Aaron Finch, who was ruled out with a foot injury, but made only 7 before he was stumped trying to hit Durston through the offside. Durston struck again in the same over when Alex Lees was bowled and Yorkshire were in serious trouble when Andrew Gale had his leg stump knocked back aiming to lift Durston over midwicket.Yorkshire’s first boundary did not come until Maxwell drove the last ball of the fifth over past mid-off and the batsmen struggled to get the ball away until Jonny Bairstow lifted Alex Hughes over long-off for six.Maxwell took two fours off fellow Australian Nathan Rimmington as Yorkshire reached 60 for 3 at the halfway point and he drove Hughes over extra cover for six before Bairstow was caught sweeping Greg Cork for 22. When Maxwell was bowled by Thakor , Yorkshire were 88 for 5 and in danger of falling well short of a competitive total and Tim Bresnan’s attempt to clear the ropes only ended in the hands of deep midwicket.Leaning and Liam Plunkett plundered 17 off the 18th over from Cork but three wickets fell in the final over leaving Yorkshire with what looked a below-par total on a small ground.Durston launched his team’s chase by lofting Maxwell’s second ball over midwicket for six and although Matthew Fisher knocked out his leg stump in the second over, Hamish Rutherford drove Maxwell over the pavilion in the fifth over.Chesney Hughes was lbw sweeping at Maxwell but the over cost 16, including five wides, and Rutherford took four fours from Josh Shaw’s first over as Derbyshire accelerated towards their target. The New Zealander drove a return catch back to Plunkett and although Shiv Thakor was run out, Derbyshire appeared to be cruising until Madsen was caught behind and Billy Godleman was needlessly run out in the 17th over. But Alex Hughes eased the pressure by pulling Plunkett for six and Derbyshire recorded only their second T20 win in 10 games at Queen’s Park with seven balls to spare.”That gives us a lot of confidence, to beat a strong Yorkshire side” Durston said. “I don’t think I could have gone through another meeting where we were talking about how we should have won. We know we’ve got the players to do it, it’s about having the belief and although I got the Man of the Match, that was for the team.”Yorkshire’s director of cricket Martyn Moxon said: “I felt we had a chance if we bowled and fielded well but we didn’t bowl well enough as a group, there were too many easy four balls and it was a pretty disappointing performance all-round. The bottom line is we are not playing well enough in this form of the game.”

> Confira e simule a tabela do Campeonato Brasileiro

Hrishikesh Kanitkar retires from cricket

Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who last featured in a first-class game more than 18 months ago, has formally retired from cricket

Kanitkar finished his career as one of only three batsmen to have scored 8000-plus runs in the Ranji Trophy•K Sivaraman

Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who last featured in a first-class game more than 18 months ago, has formally retired from cricket. Kanitkar communicated his decision to the BCCI on Wednesday.”The passion for batting was still there but the motivation to be on the ground fielding for long stretches of time, even in a match, didn’t really exist,” Kanitkar told ESPNcricinfo. “I didn’t want fielding to be a formality. If I am not able to give as much as a youngster is giving in the field, then I shouldn’t be pushing myself for a place in a side, so I took the call.”Kanitkar had been plagued with fitness issues, which forced him on the sidelines for most of his last two seasons in domestic cricket. Rajasthan, the last of the three domestic teams he played for, had offered him to join them days before the last domestic season but the batsman couldn’t join them since he wasn’t fit enough for first-class cricket.Despite losing his place in India’s side in 2000, Kanitkar continued to slog on the domestic circuit and emerged a doyen of domestic cricket. He ended his career as one of only three batsmen to have scored 8000-plus runs in the Ranji Trophy. His 28 Ranji centuries are also joint third-highest in the tournament’s history. He is also the only captain in the tournament’s history to lift the Elite and Plate league titles.Kanitkar lead Rajasthan, the third domestic side he played for after his home team Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, to successive Ranji titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12. During his six seasons as professional, he had been honing his coaching skills. He hopes to be involved in the game as a coach. He has already conducted a camp of the BCCI’s east zone regional camp for under-19 cricketers.”Coaching is something I am very keen on. If I get an opportunity to work with teams, it would be a great learning experience,” he said. “I will also be keen to work as a cricket analyst in the media. These are the two things are on my agenda. It’s like after being a doctor for twenty years, you want to be a consultant after that. You can’t just turn the back on something that you have loved all your life.”Kanitkar featured in two Tests and 34 ODIs for India, his four off Saqlain Mushtaq to seal a famous victory in the Independence Cup final was the defining moment of his brief stint in international cricket.”I have had a great time. So many ups and down, but ups have been more than downs. I would like to especially thank the BCCI and all the state associations I played for – my home state Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. It’s been a great life so far as a player. I am sure it will transform into a great life as a coach, as a commentator – whatever comes along.”
