Aston Villa eyeing Robin Olsen after Randolph blow

Aston Villa have turned their sights towards signing Robin Olsen after suffering a transfer blow over Darren Randolph…

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days had suggested Steven Gerrard’s side were keen on landing the Republic of Ireland international, with an enquiry having already been made for the West Ham goalkeeper.

But now, according to journalist Alex Crook, Villa have failed in their pursuit of the Hammers man, and have instead lined up a swoop for Sheffield United loanee Olsen.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “#AVFCnow turning their attentions to Robin Olsen after failing to land Darren Randolph.”

Villa making moves

On loan from AS Roma, Olsen has played 11 times in the Championship this season for the Blades, but has fallen out of contention in recent weeks and months after being a virtual ever-present for the opening of the campaign.

With 53 caps for Sweden, the 32-year-old is a highly-experienced campaigner who of course has had previous experience of playing in the top-flight.

Indeed, the 6 foot 5 shot-stopper was impressive over his seven Premier League appearances while on loan at Everton last year, helping to keep two clean sheets, conceding an average of just 1.3 goals and also making three saves per game too.

While the signing of Olsen himself is hardly like to set hearts aflutter in Villa fans – especially when you consider they have just signed Philippe Coutinho in recent days – it should still be a move that has supporters very much impressed though.

Gerrard’s side have been quick and decisive in this transfer window, taking advantage of every opportunity that has arisen and come their way.

Whether it was snapping up Coutinho on loan and Gerrard using his pull and previous links to the Brazilian, or swooping in ahead of the likes of Chelsea to land Digne, Villa have been very fast to act.

Now, Crook’s update that after hitting a roadblock in trying to sign Randolph, they have already lined up an alternative target in Olsen suggests a highly thought-out planning structure that bodes well for their future recruitment.

Meanwhile, this Aston Villa target is now set to join their Premier League rivals…

Patel and Obanda seal Kenya win

Scorecard
Rakep Patel’s 92 downed Netherlands•Thota Sreenivas

Kenya sealed an easy six-wicket victory in the first one-day international at the Nairobi Gymkhana after Netherlands struggled to 219 for 9 in the alien conditions, their score thanks largely to an unbeaten 109 from Ryan ten Doeschate. After the loss of both openers within the first eight overs, ten Doeschate held the innings together, with no other batsman making more than Bas Zuiderent’s 21 and only the top four reaching double figures. Rakep Patel and Alex Obanda powered Kenya’s chase, adding 126 for the second wicket to seal a cathartic victory for the Kenyans after their poor showing at the World Twenty20 Qualifiers. After Netherlands were put in to bat, Alexei Kervezee and Eric Szwarczynski both fell in Elijah Otieno’s impressive opening spell. Zuiderent added a cautious 43 in just over 15 overs with ten Doeschate before he was run out 21 by Jimmy Kamande, and Kenya’s spinners then strangled the middle order. Hiren Varaiya and Shem Obodo conceded just 62 in a combined 19 overs, as well as picking up the wickets of Tom de Grooth and Peter Borren.Tim Gruijters, an 18-year-old in his first match in the senior side, was run out by Collins Obuya before Otieno returned to pick up his third wicket – that of Mudassar Bukhari for 6 as Netherlands slipped to 142 for 7. Then followed the highest partnership of the match, with ten Doeschate adding a rapid 46 in under five overs in Atse Buurman’s company. The only Dutch batsman to come to terms with the conditions, ten Doeschate’s 37 runs dominated his partnership with Buurman in the closing overs. Nelson and Nehemiah Odhiambo picked up a wicket apiece before he reached a well-deserved hundred and set up a score that, in a Kenyan side lacking the experienced pair of Thomas Odoyo and Steve Tikolo – who is playing domestic cricket in Zimbabwe – appeared defendable. In the event, it proved woefully under-par as Kenya romped to victory with more than 15 overs to spare. Patel and Obanda, two young batsmen who will have an important role to play in Kenya’s cricketing future, were the chief architects of the run chase. Patel started slowly, the lesser partner in a 52-run opening stand with David Obuya, but grew in confidence as the innings progressed and Obanda’s dashing strokeplay took the pressure off him while Netherlands’ bowlers wilted in the heat.Obanda – who smashed 79 in Kenya’s recent win over Canada at the Qualifiers – took a couple of overs to play himself in before launching a brutal assault on the bowling. He reached his half-century from only 51 balls, with five boundaries, and smashed another six and a four before he was bowled by ten Doeschate for 61.Patel continued in the company of captain Maurice Ouma, taking the score past 200 in the 33rd over as Kenya closed in on the win. But with a maiden century in sight, Patel advanced down the wicket to Peter Seelaar’s left-arm spin and was stumped by Buurman for 92. Collins Obuya was also out soon after, caught behind off Mark Jonkman, but Kamande sealed the game with a six in the same over to give Kenya a one-nil lead in the two-match series.

Pakistan dominate with 204-run lead

Salman Butt gave Pakistan a strong start with 71•Getty Images

An attritional first two sessions gave way to an explosive finale as first Mohammad Yousuf and later Umar Akmal helped propel Pakistan to an imposing 204-run first innings lead. Their frenetic efforts capitalised on the 109-run opening stand of Imran Farhat and Salman Butt as Pakistan advanced to 9 for 331 at stumps, having displayed greater discipline and match-awareness than their Australian counterparts the previous day.The tourists endured a testing opening to the second day in gloomy, seaming conditions, but brightened in line with the weather over the course of the afternoon. Yousuf provided an immediate lift to procedings by adding 27 runs in the space of 28 deliveries in the period leading to tea, while Akmal made his skipper look relatively pedestrian by striking five boundaries from his first seven deliveries faced en route to a 48-ball innings of 49.That Yousuf and Akmal fell short of half-centuries was due partly to Pakistan’s penchant for attacking strokeplay in the final session and partly to the persistence of the Australian bowlers. Having been provided little to work with by their batsmen, Australia’s attack stuck to their task admirably and were rewarded with seven final-session wickets, many caught in the deep as Pakistan sought quick runs.Pakistan could be accused of taking their foot from the throats of the Australians in the lead-up to stumps, having at one stage thrust to 205 for the loss of two wickets on a surface drying by the hour. That may be so, but the tourists nonetheless outplayed their rivals in four of the five sessions through Monday, and are ideally positioned to break their ten-game losing streak to the Australians at the very venue where they last tasted victory. The hosts made amends for an indifferent morning in the field with a series of excellent catches, none better than Haddin’s spectacular diving effort to remove the dangerous Yousuf. The veteran batsman had, to that point, threatened to take the game completely away from the Australians, and Haddin’s interception restored a semblance of competitive edge to the match. That notion was reinforced when the television umpire, Rudi Koertzen, overturned Billy Doctrove’s decision to rule Akmal not out to a full, straight Doug Bollinger delivery, denying the Pakistanis further use of their potent middle-order weapon.

Australia’s uphill task

In the entire history of Test cricket only five times has a team won after trailing by more than 200 in the first innings. Australia have achieved this feat twice – against Sri Lanka in 1992, when they overcame a deficit of 291, and South Africa in 1950. England have done it twice as well, including the famous Headingley Test in 1981, while India overcame a 274-run deficit against Australia in Kolkata in 2001. Click here and here for the full list. (The five instances excludes England’s wins against South Africa in 2000, when both teams forfeited an innings each, and Pakistan in 2006, when the visitors refused to play.)

Pakistan are also only three runs away from equalling their highest first-innings lead in a Test in Australia – they’d led by 207 at the MCG in 1981, a match they won by an innings and 82 runs.

Pakistan’s lower order failed to replicate the heroics of their more established batsmen, but still cobbled together enough cameos to take their lead beyond 200. Australia’s batsmen will feel confident of a better showing amid drier pitch conditions when next they mark centre, however the hectares of ground they conceded on Sunday may yet prove irretrievable. The hosts would do well to analyse the manner in which Farhat and Butt set about their respective innings on the second day. The Australian top-order, minus Watson, fell to forceful strokes on a seaming wicket in their ill-fated first innings; a direct contrast to the cautious and patient approach of the Pakistani openers. Content to accumulate rather than dominate, Farhat and Butt shelved their cross-bat strokes and successfully repelled threatening spells from Bollinger, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Johnson and Watson to post their third career century stand and first against Australia.Farhat and Butt have emerged as a dependable solution to Pakistan’s problematic opening slot. Their stand of 109, which took their first-wicket partnership average to a robust 47.43, built upon the foundation laid by Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Sami the preceding day to deliver the tourists to a position of dominance in the match. The union was not without its anxious moments, most notably when Farhat was dropped by Marcus North to a regulation slips chance off the bowling of Siddle on 11, but both stood firm on an improving pitch.Farhat went on to raise his 13th half-century before skying an attempted sweep off the bowling of Nathan Hauritz shortly after the lunch break. Butt also fell in the second session, edging a full-length delivery from a deserving Johnson, however Faisal Iqbal and Yousuf ensured there were no further setbacks with an unbroken 46-run third-wicket partnership heading into tea. Iqbal was first to fall after the break to an athletic, back-pedalling catch from Watson at backward point off the bowling of Siddle. That prompted a mad flurry of runs and dismissals that saw Bollinger and Watson combine for five wickets and Pakistan attempt to blaze the second new ball to all corners of the SCG.

Australia ride to safety on Ponting and Clarke tons

On the day when he was voted the world’s best cricketer of the past ten years, Ricky Ponting showed his use-by date didn’t arrive with the end of the decade

The Bulletin by Brydon Coverdale at Bellerive Oval13-Jan-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRicky Ponting’s 39th Test century put Australia in a powerful position•Getty ImagesOn the day when he was voted the world’s best cricketer of the past ten years, Ricky Ponting showed his use-by date didn’t arrive with the end of the decade. Ponting and Michael Clarke each scored centuries in a merciless 231-run partnership that left Pakistan dejected, bereft of ideas, and rueful of yet another dropped catch that took their tally to 14 for the series. In Sydney, Ponting was caught for a duck in the first innings when he hooked straight to the man on the boundary and this time, again without scoring, he whipped a Mohammad Asif bouncer from in front of his eyebrows straight to the man at deep backward square leg. Mohammad Aamer didn’t have to move a single step but grassed the chance, slumping on the ground in dismay at his error.Teams know that if they miss a chance to get rid of Ponting, they may not get another. And after Australia were 3 for 71 in the opening session, the bright start that Pakistan’s seamers made after a third lost toss for the series was wasted. Soon, Mohammad Yousuf’s defensive fields crept back in, Pakistani shoulders slumped and by the final hour, the bowlers were interested only in stopping runs with a wide-outside-off line. But while Pakistan contributed to their own disappointment, Australia’s captain and vice-captain deserve high praise for their concentration and determination to reach 3 for 302 at stumps with Ponting on 137 and Clarke on 111. Both men entered the match hoping to turn around personally fruitless summers: Clarke needed to show that he could return to his Ashes form and Ponting required a big knock to avoid his least productive home Test summer in a decade.Ponting was scrappy early. His ears have been ringing over his favourite hook and pull shots, which he has struggled to middle in recent times, and today they were pounding in pain when he misjudged a hook off Umar Gul and was hit on the helmet. Several other horizontal-bat shots were missed or edged but he didn’t put the shot away and after reaching his half-century nailed a beautiful pull for four off Gul.Gradually, the Ponting trademarks returned: a textbook back-foot drive through point, a cover-drive on the up to the boundary, an aerial loft off the legspinner Danish Kaneria. His 39th Test century and his second at his home ground in Hobart arrived with a paddle sweep for two. Ponting’s celebrations were serious and focused: a kiss of the helmet and a bat pointed at the stands, and not much of a smile. It was his first hundred since the opening Ashes Test and it silenced any growing concerns over his form.At the other end, Clarke was watchful early but never looked scratchy. He has made several starts this summer without going on, but in concert with his captain he was keen to ensure a fine finale to the home Test season. Clarke drove and cut with aplomb, and in typical style used his feet brilliantly to Kaneria, who looked all out of sorts and rarely appeared likely to get a wicket. Clarke’s 13th Test ton came with a quick single clipped off his pads from his 188th delivery.Unlike Ponting, Clarke didn’t give a chance and their wonderful partnership was their highest stand together at Test level, beating the 210 runs they put on against India in Adelaide two seasons ago, and Australia’s highest fourth-wicket effort against Pakistan. They were a major frustration for Yousuf’s men, who had shown a real spark in the first session. The match started in overcast, swing-friendly conditions and Asif in particular was a regular threat in the first couple of hours. He ended Simon Katich’s return to the Test side early with a lovely ball that pitched in line, straightened, and had the batsman trapped lbw on review for 11. Four changes to the team helped freshen things up and the debutant wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, who replaced Kamran Akmal, pouched his first Test catch when Aamer drew an edge behind from Michael Hussey on 6. But sometimes, the more things change the more they stay the same and Pakistan’s fielding remained poor overall. On top of Aamer’s drop of Ponting, Asif saw another opportunity evade his fielders when Shane Watson top-edged an attempted pull. Khurram Manzoor, another of the new men for this Test, and Imran Farhat ran back from the cordon but managed to collide with each other and miss the ball completely. Fortunately for Pakistan, that mistake wasn’t crucial and Watson departed soon afterwards for 29 when he cut Gul straight to gully, where Farhat took the catch. But the fielding degenerated again after lunch and misfields galore contributed to Pakistan’s disheartenment. Ponting and Clarke don’t need to be given such liberties.

Postecoglou drops double injury update

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has dropped an injury update ahead of the Bhoys’ upcoming Premiership clash.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Daily Record, the Hoops boss revealed that both Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic should be available for selection for the visit of Hearts on Thursday night, as the central midfield duo appear to have recovered from their respective injuries.

The Israel international missed out on the Bhoys’ 2-1 win over Aberdeen on Sunday due to a knock picked up in the Europa League loss against Bayer Leverkusen last Thursday, while the Australian has been out of action since October with a hamstring injury.

On the current condition of the duo, the 56-year-old said: “Hopefully Nir should be available again and Tommy Rogic will definitely be available for Thursday.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering how impressive Rogic had been prior to picking up his injury, in addition to how well Bitton had fared while filling in for the Australia international, the news that both players look set to make a return to action against third-placed Hearts is sure to have left the Bhoys’ fanbase buzzing.

Indeed, over Rogic’s 11 Premiership fixtures this season, the £1.35m-rated midfielder has scored one goal, provided two assists and created five big chances for his teammates, with these returns seeing the £16k-per-week 28-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 6.97.

Meanwhile, over Bitton’s last four Premiership and Europa League fixtures, the £720k-rated 30-year-old has enjoyed 353 touches of the ball, completed 269 passes, made 15 tackles and won a whopping 31 duels, with these metrics seeing the £14k-per-week midfielder average a SofaScore match rating of 7.33.

As such, with the prospect of a win against Robbie Neilson’s side making a very clear statement to the rest of the league that Celtic mean business in their pursuit to reclaim their Premiership crown this season, it will surely be a huge boost to Postecoglou that it looks as if he will be able to call upon both Rogic and Bitton this week.

West Ham: Fans amazed by Okoflex’s U23’s hat-trick

West Ham fans are ecstatic at the news that Armstrong Okoflex scored a hat-trick for the U23s in the young Hammers’ 4-2 win over Crystal Palace, putting them top of the Premier League 2 table.

Irish teenager Okoflex won and converted the penalty that saw West Ham bring back the lead after initially going 2-1 down to Palace, rounding off his hat-trick early on in the second half.

Kamarai Swyer then put the game to bed after left-back Jayden Fevrier fed the ball through to the attacking midfielder, who was able to lash in a near-post finish.

West Ham fans have been extremely impressed with Okoflex this season, who has totalled 10 goals and one assist in 13 Premier League 2 appearances.

This wasn’t even his first hat-trick of the 2021/22 campaign, as the left winger netted three times in the U23’s 6-1 victory against Arsenal.

Okoflex has proved that he can perform at the senior level too, as he scored in West Ham U23’s EFL Trophy tie against Ipswich, which they won 2-1.

Fans erupt at Okoflex’s hat-trick

Fans have flocked to West Ham’s tweet, which announces the teenager’s third goal, with amazement. They even call for him to be promoted to the first-team, following his fine form.

West Ham table new Johnson deal offer

According to Calciomercato, there has been yet another contract development out of Rush Green as news emerges on West Ham starlet Ben Johnson.

The Lowdown: West Ham in new deal flurry…

Over these last few months, it appears West Ham officials have made tying down first team stars a major priority going by reports.

Firstly, the club attempted multiple new contract offers for star man Declan Rice, over for them to be rejected over the summer, while Czech Republic duo Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal have also been heavily linked with signing fresh terms.

Angelo Ogbonna is another name who could be handed a new deal at the London Stadium according to reports, especially considering his current contract runs out at the end of this season.

Sharing news on another West Ham first teamer who’s contract also runs out in 2022, Calciomercato have some big news on Johnson.

The Latest: West Ham table offer…

According to their sources, the Hammers 21-year-old has now been offered a new contract as West Ham put fresh terms on the table.

When it comes to specifics like the length, salary or any clauses, Calciomercato are pretty vague in their claim and simply state that an extension has indeed been put forward to Johnson.

The Verdict: Great move…

The Irons starlet has hugely impressed under Moyes this season, leading the Scotsman to call him a ‘really important player’ in the squad.

In Coufal’s brief injury absence before he returned to the side against Genk in midweek, Johnson filled the right-back’s boots impressively – holding his own in huge games against the likes of Manchester City and bitter London rivals Tottenham.

Statistically, you only have to look at the player’s impressive Premier League numbers when it comes to holding his own defensively.

According to WhoScored, no West Ham teammate has managed more tackles per 90 on average than Johnson so far this season and, if he can keep up this run of form, Moyes may be presented with a huge dilemma at right-back over this season.

The club certainly can’t afford to let his contract run down for a second longer and it is imperative the promising youngster is tied down as soon as possible.

Sanchez a beast in Spurs win vs Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur advanced into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening as they defeated Premier League rivals Burnley at Turf Moor.

A 68th-minute header from super-sub Lucas Moura was enough to separate the two sides in what was a pretty drab affair, though it would’ve been a welcome victory for everyone concerned with the club, having lost their last two games.

Spurs were largely dominant as they recorded 62% possession and three more shots on target but that didn’t stop the Clarets from being a major threat, particularly in being aggressive and dominant aerially.

But the Portuguese’s backline held firm to keep a much-needed clean sheet. And one player’s performance was standout as Davinson Sanchez dealt with Burnley’s physical nature impressively.

As per SofaScore, the £18m-rated Colombian registered a whopping 13 clearances in the match. For context, the home side managed only eight between them, so it goes to show just how influential Sanchez was in keeping the opposition at bay.

Elsewhere, he also chipped in with two tackles, further showing why Burnley’s attack struggled to find a way past the north Londoners, who will be aiming to go one better in this competition after last season’s final heartbreak.

Indeed, Sanchez won six aerial battles and only lost possession six times from a whopping 85 touches, thus proving his influence in Nuno’s defence.

The 25-year-old colossus, who cost Spurs a then club-record £42m in August 2017, was equally adept with the ball at his feet, as he managed to find 91% of his 67 passing attempts, via SofaScore.

Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard was left impressed by the defender, too.

‘In the right place to make a crucial intervention as Burnley rallied late, while he used his pace to mop up balls behind. A decent showing,’ he wrote in his post-match ratings column, where he graded the 6 foot 2 an 8/10.

After conceding two in the win over Newcastle, and goals against Vitesse and West Ham in recent weeks, Nuno is left with a massive selection dilemma as Sanchez may have just thrown his name into the hat to start against an out-of-sorts Manchester United this weekend.

The Portuguese head coach now has plenty to ponder before Saturday evening.
