Australia wary of Tahir spin threat

South Africa welcome Australia for three T20s looking to continue their run of good form ahead of the World T20

‘Our record hasn’t been great playing excellent spin’ – Maxwell

Ah, Australia. Just the team South Africa want to see.Never mind that the Australia Test side now holds the mace that was in South Africa’s cabinet little more than a month ago, that the Australia one-day side thrashed South Africa 4-1 the last time they met and that the T20 side beat them 2-1 on the same 2014 tour. For South Africa, there is no better yardstick to measure themselves against than the old enemy.”It’s good to judge yourself against some of the better sides and better players,” Russell Domingo, South Africa’s coach, said. Especially if you have the upper hand. While South Africa have won three of their last four T20 series, Australia are coming off a 3-0 home whitewash to India. While two of South Africa’s victories came in the subcontinent, the same place the World T20 will be played, the closest Australia have got to that region in the last year is in their opposition. They have not played in the subcontinent since 2014.Which means Australia are concerned with all things spin, something South Africa know about and now consider conquered. At both ends. Most of their batsmen, perhaps JP Duminy and David Miller excluded, are comfortable against turn and some of them – AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla – can dominate it. More importantly, though, South Africa have a genuine match-winning spinner in Imran Tahir who has shown an ability to control passages of play by taking wickets and limiting runs.In the recent series against England, Tahir’s five wickets was the join-highest haul along with Kyle Abbott and his economy rate of 5.75 was the lowest overall. Given their recent record against quality spinners, Australia are wary.”Imran is very experienced. He is an outstanding bowler. He has been very successful and he played really well in the IPL last year,” Glenn Maxwell, who played against Tahir while he was with Delhi Daredevils, said. “I think that was a big thing for him and for his confidence. I think he has been riding that since. He seems to grab the momentum back for South Africa every time he comes on.”Our record hasn’t been great in the subcontinent, especially playing excellent spin. You’ve only to look back at our last performance [at the World T20] in 2014 in Bangladesh: Ajmal, Afridi, Narine, we struggled against.”Even in the series against India at home, Australia were undone by spin. Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin shared nine wickets between them to finish behind Jasprit Bumrah on the wicket-takers’ list. But the Australia line-up that played in those matches is not the Australia line-up that will play in South Africa or at the World T20 and Maxwell has promised they will have more muscle.”If you look at our batting order, it’s suited to combat that,” he said. “We’ve got excellent players of spin in our team and guys that have got international experience in India. It’s going to be key for us to have those guys perform well for us. It felt like the Indian series we were trying a lot of players. We didn’t play our main team at any stage. It’s an exciting that we can get better from that. Hopefully when we hit Durban on Friday night we can show that with our No. 1 side.”Australia have dispensed with the likes of Travis Head and Chris Lynn for now and will rely on the experience of Aaron Finch, David Warner and Shane Watson. They have a settled on their Test wicketkeeper who was not part of the India series at all – Peter Nevill – instead of Matthew Wade or Cameron Bancroft and they have decided they can do without Shaun Marsh. Now, all they need is to find the consistency they have lacked in this format, which Maxwell thinks is because of the irregularity with which they play it.”We play a lot of one-day cricket and you get used to your role in that team but in T20s, we’ve played quite sparingly as a team at international level,” he said. “Between the World T20 in Bangladesh and now, we’ve played only a few games in a row where you can get a roll on.”Since that tournament, Australia have only played eight T20s and won three. South Africa have played 15 (with one abandonment) and won nine, which would explain why they are so happy to host Australia for the next ten days. But the results of this mini-series will determine how happy they will be when they head to the World T20.

A provável formação do Palmeiras nesta quarta-feira deve ter: Weverton; Marcos Rocha, Gustavo Gómez, Vitor Hugo e Diogo Barbosa; Felipe Melo, Bruno Henrique e Gustavo Scarpa; Dudu, Willian e Deyverson.

O Palmeiras chega a esta 26ª rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro na segunda posição, com 50 pontos acumulados, a oito do Flamengo, que lidera a competição. A Chapecoense, adversária do Verdão, protagoniza a pior campanha do torneio, somando apenas 16 pontos.

Andy Pick assists Afghanistan World Cup preparations

Former Nottinghamshire fast bowler Andy Pick has been appointed Afghanistan’s bowling coach

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jan-2015Former Nottinghamshire fast bowler Andy Pick has been appointed Afghanistan’s bowling consultant for a fortnight’s stint at a pre World Cup camp. He will join the team later this week in the UAE, where they are scheduled to play matches against Scotland and Ireland, with the possibility of continuing the links with the team leading into the World Cup.Afghanistan Cricket Board chairman Nasimullah Danish said Pick’s experience with other teams made him the right man for the job. “We hope to see his skills [being replicated by] our national team players. We have observed Andy’s career graph as a successful coach and then we came up with this decision collectively. The board is very thankful and fortunate to have him.”Pick, 51, had played 195 first-class matches, taking 495 wickets at 33.24, before taking to coaching. Apart from helping nurture Alastair Cook in school cricket, he had worked with the England Under-19s and the Canada national team and had a short stint working on cricket in the USA – he quit his post as high performance manager with the USA Cricket Association after two months, citing incidents which were not in line with how a professional organisation should operate. Later, he was appointed bowling coach with Nottinghamshire.

Ibexes get on board with one-run win

Group D

Seamer Atif Jabbar bowled three dot balls in the final over, as Dera Murad Jamali Ibexes held on for a one-run win against Bahawalpur Stags in Karachi.Chasing 142, Stags lost their opener Hamid Ali early, but were buoyed by a 48-run partnership between the captain Imranullah Aslam (25) and Naeemuddin (32). However, two quick blows from the legspinner Abid Ali (2 for 23) thwarted Stags’ momentum and reduced them to 71 for 4, with still 71 to get off 53 deliveries.Faisal Mubashir kept Stags hoping with an unbeaten 25-ball 36, but he could not find the desired acceleration from his partners, as Kamran Hussain and Taimur Khan together used 21 deliveries to make just 19. Mubashir eventually brought the equation down to nine needed off the last over, but he and Waqas Khan could only manage three runs from the first five balls, meaning that Waqas’ four off the final delivery was inconsequential – a six was what was needed.Opting to bat, Ibexes had made 141 for 7 from their 20 overs. Their innings was built around a 46-ball 50 from Najeebullah, and his 56-run stand with Asif Ali, after opener Imran Khan had thumped 22 off eight to give his team a bright start.

Group C

Faisalabad Wolves opener Farrukh Shehzad slammed an unbeaten 72 off just 38 balls to help the team gun down 136 against AJK Jaguars with five overs to spare. Farrukh thumped nine fours and two sixes during his knock, as he and his opening partner Ali Waqas (43) raced to 102 inside 12 overs, setting Wolves up for a comprehensive eight-wicket victory.Opting to bat, Jaguars began brightly themselves, with the captain Raheel Majeed scoring a 49-ball 60, with eight fours and a six. Majeed and Adil Gulbahar put up 90 for the first wicket, but three wickets in the space of 11 deliveries hampered Jaguars’ momentum. Ghulam Murtaza offered a late surge by hitting 24 off 15 balls, but four of Wolves’ bowlers went at under six an over, as Jaguars were kept to 135 for 4.A late flourish from Mohammad Fayyaz, who scored an unbeaten 39 off 22 balls, led Peshawar Panthers to a four-wicket victory with a ball to spare against Islamabad Leopards. Chasing 157, Panthers lost Rafatullah Mohamand for a duck in the first over but were steadied by useful contributions from Nos. 2, 3 and 4. Adil Amin blitzed 39 off 21 balls but he and the others did not kick on, leaving the finish to Fayyaz. The equation was 44 off 24 balls when Fayyaz began to turn it on and Panthers won off the penultimate ball.Leopards had built their total around Babar Azam’s 70 off 51 balls. Only one other batsman – Afaq Raheem – made more than 15 as the innings suffered from the frequent loss of wickets. They were 133 for 2 in the 17th over but slipped to 137 for 6. Taj Wali took 3 for 36 for Panthers as Leopards were restricted to 156 for 6.

Northern Districts booked their place in the final beating Canterbury by four wickets in the preliminary final thanks to a vital all-round effort from Scott Kuggeleijn. Canterbury were put on the backfoot right at the start as their top order was rocked by quick bowler Kuggeleijn, who is comfortably the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Canterbury were down to 82 for 5 before half-centuries from Peter Fulton and Andrew Ellis lifted them towards a competitive score.Northern Districts’ chase began solidly as their openers put on 63 before Brad Wilson fell for 33. His partner Daniel Flynn top scored with 73 and there were 30s from Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner as well, but two wickets in the space of four balls left Northern Districts needing 20 off 15 deliveries. It didn’t even go to the final over, though, as Kuggeleijn smashed a six and a four in an eight-ball 16.The defeat doesn’t knock out Canterbury, though, and leaves them facing Wellington in a battle for a place in the final against Northern Districts.
Scorecard
Wellington’s spin pair of Luke Woodcock and Jeetan Patel, and the medium-pace of Grant Elliott restricted Auckland to 220, setting the stage for a four-wicket victory.Fast bowler Brent Arnel leaked 60 runs off 7.3 overs, as Auckland openers hammered 74 in little over 10 overs, but the rest of the Wellington attacked combined to dampen the scoring rate. The run-out of opener Anaru Kitchen started the slide for Auckland, before Elliott struck twice. Auckland completely lost their way in the second half of the innings, slipping from 153 for 3 to 187 for 9.There was never any problem in the chase, especially after the Wellington openers, Michael Pollard and Michael Papps, put on 134 at quicker than a run a ball, setting up a clash with Canterbury for a place in the final.

Bangladesh, NZ in plate final

A round-up of the Under-19 World Cup playoff matches on February 25, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Feb-2014Ken McClure’s second consecutive fifty helped New Zealand Under-19s to a five-wicket win against UAE Under-19s in the Plate Semi-Final in Abu Dhabi. McClure hit seven fours and a six during his unbeaten 62 to help New Zealand chase down 141 in 30.2 overs.UAE, put in to bat, were unable to gather any momentum as their progress was halted by wickets at regular intervals. Kyle Jamieson provided the first breakthrough for New Zealand in the ninth over, with the total on 26. Jeremy Benton and Josh Finnie shared two wickets each as UAE stumbled to 85 for 7 and only a 36-run stand for the eighth wicket gave the UAE score some respectability. While most of their batsmen made starts, none could muster more than 21 as a result of which the team eventually folded for 140 in 49.2 overs.New Zealand lost Henry Collier early in the chase, but Raki Weerasundara chipped in with 30. The team lost five wickets by the 27th over, but UAE did not have enough runs to challenge the opposition. New Zealand will now play Bangladesh in the Plate Final.A quick half-century from Mosaddek Hossain paved the way for Bangladesh Under-19s’ 76-run win against Zimbabwe Under-19s in the other Plate Semi-Final. Mosaddek whipped six fours and a six during his unbeaten 66-ball 83, and forged a 64-run alliance for the fifth wicket with Yasir Ali to take the team to a competitive 265 for 6. The groundwork for Bangladesh’s innings had been laid by Joyraz Sheik (58) and Litton Das (47) who put up 77 for the second wicket to help the team towards the 150-run mark. The Bangladesh bowlers then ran through Zimbabwe’s top order to leave the team struggling at 65 for 5, but Luke Jongwe and the captain Malcolm Lake put up a brief resistance, with a 50-run partnership for the sixth wicket. However, two wickets in the 37th over from Mustafizur Rahman once again dented Zimbabwe’s hopes and despite a fighting 30 from Deven Bell at No. 9, the team were restricted to 193 for 9 from their 50 overs.West Indies Under-19s seamer Ray Jordan picked up three wickets to help the team edge Afghanistan Under-19s by nine runs in Dubai. Chasing 216, Afghanistan were inching towards a win at 204 for 7, but Jordan struck off successive deliveries in the 47th over before Gudakesh Motie’s strike in the next over dismissed Afghanistan for 206.Earlier, Fabian Allen’s 92 had helped West Indies recover after three of their top five batsmen were out for ducks. Allen hit eight fours and four sixes, and combined with Ramaal Lewis for a sixth-wicket partnership worth 52 runs, which eventually took the team to 215. Fareed Ahmad and Mohammad Mujtaba shared three scalps apiece for Afghanistan.Afghanistan were buoyed by a 51 from the opener Shahidullah, but the loss of wickets at regular intervals saw them precariously placed at 97 for 5. Hashmatullah Shaidi scored an unbeaten 52 and the captain Nasir Jamal chipped in with 30, but the team eventually fell just short.

Pappu, Tiwary fifties build Jharkhand lead

Odisha started the third day with intentions of building their lead, 24 overnight, to healthier proportions against Jharkhand. Resuming on 245 for 5, however, things did not fold out as per plan when in the eighth over of the day, Biplab Samantray was caught for 67 off the bowling of Varun Aaron. The rest of the batting folded limply as Odisha were all out for 307, their lead only 86 runs. Seamer Ajay Yadav was the pick of the bowlers as he finished with 5 for 61.Any confidence Jharkhand had was quickly taken away when Basant Mohanty single-handedly went after the top and middle-order, claiming all six wickets that fell. At 37 for 5, things looked rather bleak, but a 99-run partnership between wicketkeeper Pappu Singh and Saurabh Tiwary helped save some of Jharkhand’s blushes as they finished the day on 149 for 6, with a lead of 63 runs.
ScorecardGujarat were rocked early in their second innings by the efforts of seamers Sandeep Sharma and Siddharth Kaul as they finished the day on 33 for 3, requiring a further 322 for victory. Punjab began the day on 127 for 2, with Mandeep Singh and Taruwar Kohli resuming their overnight stand to put on 102 runs for the third wicket.Mandeep was the first to fall on 46 when he was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, who picked up three wickets. Taruwar followed him soon after as he was caught off the bowling of Mehul Patel for 50. Uday Kaul, the wicketkeeper, added 52 but the rest of the batting could not muster meaningful contributions. Mehul claimed the final wicket, to finish with 3 for 79 as Punjab were bowled out for 309.Gujarat started their second innings in the worst possible manner when opener Smit Patel was trapped in front by Sharma first ball. Manpreet Juneja didn’t last long either as he was snared in the seventh over. Siddharth had Bhargav Merai leg before to make it 14 for 3 putting Gujarat in a tricky situation going into the fourth day.
ScorecardHaving resumed on 457 for 6, Vidarbha looked good to add on as much as they could. But just three overs into the morning, Shalabh Shrivastava’s innings finally came to an end when he was caught behind on 193 off the bowling of medium-pacer HS Sharath. Sumit Ruikar, who was on 48 overnight, completed his maiden first-class half-century but he was bowled by Abhimanyu Mithun with the score on 490. Umesh Yadav struck a 39-ball 34 as Vidarbha posted 542. Sharath finished with best figures of 4 for 104.Facing a daunting total, Karnataka started promisingly with the openers putting on 124, with Robin Uthappa falling for 86 to the bowling of Akshay Wakhare. KL Rahul joined Mayank Agarwal, and continued the good work with the pair adding 79 for the second wicket. Once Agarwal fell for 71, Manish Pandey came in at No. 4 and batted with Rahul to see Karnataka to a strong position of 252 for 2 but they still trailed Vidarbha by 290 runs.
ScorecardGautam Gambhir showed a lot of intent during his knock of 153 while Virender Sehwag played a rank bad shot as Delhi closed in on their first outright win, against Haryana, in their fourth group league encounter.Read the full report here
