Mohammad Hafeez, Imam-ul-Haq grind Australia in the Dubai heat

The scorecard suggested nearly total domination from Pakistan. After all, they finished the day at 255 for 3, thanks to a 205-run opening stand from Mohammad Hafeez and Imam-ul-Haq. They made Australia wait for the opening wicket in the first innings of a Test longer than they’ve ever done – 63 overs, to be precise. And yet, anyone who tuned into the final session would have wondered how Pakistan had amassed those runs, so complete was the Australian bowlers’ command. Pakistan scored 56 runs in 29 overs for the loss of three wickets in that session on an attrition first day in Dubai.Test cricket in the UAE is a game of phases. In other parts of the world it might be harder for teams to get back into the game once they’ve fallen behind, but surfaces here give teams an opportunity to bounce back. And so, even as Hafeez, who scored a century in his first Test in two years, and Imam accumulated the fifth-highest opening stand batting first against Australia, the visitors’ bowlers came roaring back into the contest, with a chance of bowling Pakistan out under 350.It began with Nathan Lyon, expected to grow in importance as the game and the pitch wears on, tempting Imam to cut a ball that was a bit too full, drawing a faint edge through to Tim Paine. At the the other end, Peter Siddle bowled a scintillating spell, justifying his inclusion in the side. Vicious reverse swing combined with relentless accuracy slowed down Pakistan’s merry progress. Siddle finally got one to beat Hafeez’s defences, with a beauty that just kept coming in, hitting the opener halfway up his shin, right in front of middle. With both openers gone, Pakistan’s scoring rate almost ground to a halt altogether – at one stage, they managed 16 runs in 16 overs as Haris Sohail and Azhar Ali dug in, desperate to see it through to stumps. All that work, however, was undone by a moment of madness from Azhar. Having gutsed his way to 18 off 79, he lofted a drive off Jon Holland, nowhere near middling it as Mitchell Starc dived forward to complete the catch. Nightwatchman Mohammad Abbas and Haris took their side to stumps without any further damage.Pakistan had settled into a formidable position by the first evening on a flat Dubai surface, with both openers still around when tea was called. Hafeez, who scored his tenth Test century was instrumental in pushing the run rate up right from the outset, and ensuring the Australians were always on the back foot. He regularly forced the bowlers to adjust their lines and coaxed Tim Paine into introducing spin as early as the ninth over in the day. He wasn’t afraid to come down the track against spin, either, without losing control of his shots. The run rate picked up after lunch as the openers shook off any nerves or fears they might have had about the pitch or the Australian attack. Hafeez also went after Nathan Lyon, who was the most economical bowler for Australia in the first session. There was a period, midway through, when he lost his focus, playing a series of false shots, displaying the concentration lapses that have prevented him taking the next step in his career and becoming the batsman he could have become. While the sun beat down, lady luck, too, was smiling at him, as a lofted cover drive off Holland was put down at long-off.Imam’s innings, meanwhile, was almost chanceless. He appeared to be mentally ready for the grind of Test cricket in this inhospitable weather. His footwork against the spin, in particular, was excellent, moving back and forward to the rhythm of the pitch of the ball with the deft expertise of a tap dancer. However, It wasn’t just in service of defensive strokes, with a couple of charges down the pitch against Holland earning him two sixes.Australia bowled well despite the unhelpful conditions, with Starc the most menacing for much of the day, getting swing early on while regularly coming close to finding Hafeez’s outside edge. The odd yorker kept the batsmen on their toes, and on another day in another country he might have finished with a five-wicket haul. Here, he ended the day wicketless. But the day would end on a very different note. Life seemed to have crept back into this pitch, and, by extension, this Test match.

Hayes and Eidevall clash at full-timeArsenal beat Chelsea in Conti Cup finalEidevall explains reason for Hayes' responseWHAT HAPPENED?

The incident occurred after the Gunners' thrilling triumph over the Blues in extra time in the Conti Cup final on Sunday. After the full-time whistle, Eidevall appeared to be shoved by an irritated Hayes as he tried to shake hands, and the Swede left with a bewildered look on his face as the Chelsea boss gestured accusingly at him. After the game, Eidevall gave the media his version of the bizarre event.

AdvertisementWATCH THE CLIPWHAT EIDEVALL SAID

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, Eidevall said: "Very happy with the performance. The first half was for the coaches and the second half was for the fans and the audience. We fight hard and of course, I'm happy that we are on the better side of it today."

On the confrontation with Emma Hayes: "Not much. We had a discussion before the game if both teams are going to play with a multi-ball system and Chelsea said they wanted to play with one ball and we said we wanted to play with multi-ball then in the last few minutes, they took another ball and I only said 'Before the game, you wanted to play with one ball'.

"So, it's not my problem. It's all good I think, it's just in the heat of the moment."

Stina Blackstenius' extra-time goal in the 116th minute of play helped Arsenal defeat Chelsea 1-0 in the Conti Cup final for the second year in a row. As Hayes gets ready to join the USWNT at the conclusion of the season, the loss puts an end to Chelsea's ambitions of earning a quadruple in her final campaign as manager.

"Special" Crystal Palace target back on the market, he wanted to join

Crystal Palace have made a quietly impressive start to this term and could now have a second opportunity to bring in one of their key summer targets in the New Year, according to a new report.

Crystal Palace vs Everton

Roy Hodgson's men have quietly gone about their business this campaign and find themselves 11th in the Premier League standings with 15 points from their opening 11 fixtures.

Last weekend, a comfortable 2-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor was enough to bring a run of three games without victory to an end, with goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Tyrick Mitchell ensuring that the three points would be heading back to south London with the Eagles.

Looking ahead, Crystal Palace face Everton at home on Saturday and could potentially move into the top half of the English top flight should results fall their way elsewhere. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Eagles boss Hodgson has urged his side to generate some crucial momentum by recording back-to-back victories by defeating the Toffees.

Hodgson stated to the club's official website: "Back-to-back wins in this league are really good, especially if you're not one of the teams right at the very top who expect back-to-back wins. We, who are not in that privileged position, we know if we can get back-to-back wins, those six points that the two wins give you, it really does make life so much more tranquil for a period of time and also boost confidence."

Of course, the 76-year-old has been boosted by some exciting news at Selhurst Park as one of his key men, Eberechi Eze, has put pen to paper on a new three-and-a-half-year deal at the club, ending heavy speculation over his future for the time being.

According to reports, Crystal Palace could now be handed a second chance to acquire someone who was a target during the summer transfer window.

Hugo Ekitike set to be available in January

According to reports from France, via Sport Witness, Crystal Palace summer target Hugo Ekitike is biding his time as he seeks an exit from the Parc des Princes and is set to be on the market again in January following a series of failed moves during the last window.

The report states that the Eagles submitted a loan bid with an obligation to buy that was rejected by the Ligue 1 giants, despite the France Under-21 international being keen to move to Selhurst Park. Paris Saint-Germain then accepted offers from Adana Demirspor, Zenit St Petersburg and Eintracht Frankfurt for his services, with the former two being on a loan basis; however, Ekitike rebuffed their advances and remained in the French capital.

Enduring an underwhelming spell at Paris Saint-Germain, Ekitike, who has previously been labelled "special" by former boss Oscar Garcia, has made 33 appearances in all competitions for his current employers, registering four goals and four assists (Ekitike statistics – Transfermarkt).

Now, a move elsewhere could be in the offing for the striker and Crystal Palace may now look to bolster their forward ranks with the arrival of the former Reims loanee.

Liverpool: Reds were bled dry by "disgrace" who cost £5.3m per goal

Liverpool have had a strong start to the 2023/24 season, after falling short of the top four in what was a lacklustre campaign by Jurgen Klopp’s side’s standard last time out.

The Reds have seen the highest highs that domestic football has to offer over the past few years, claiming their sixth Champions League win and their first Premier League win as a new batch of heroes wrote their name into history.

Stars such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Andrew Robertson and Alisson were welcomed along the way during Klopp’s tenure, with all of the star names bringing quality that paved the way to the recent successes at Anfield.

Before Klopp’s reign, every manager had their crop of sensational talents that led the way for others to follow at Liverpool, however not every capture has been as successful as the other.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Brendan Rodgers suffered a spell of welcoming adequate acquisitions in the bid to replace sharpshooter Luis Suarez, after the Uruguayan was sold to Barcelona for £75m in 2014.

The summer of 2014 was a highly underwhelming one for the Reds, who saw Suarez replaced by the signings of forward players Rickie Lambert, Lazar Markovic, Divock Origi, and most controversially, Mario Balotelli.

While Origi left a hero for his goal in the Champions League final in 2019, others were remembered less fondly, most prominently Balotelli, who failed to live up to any expectations.

When did Liverpool sign Mario Balotelli?

Balotelli was signed from AC Milan in the summer of 2014 for a mere fee of £16m, just 17 months after he’d joined the Rossoneri from fellow Premier League side Manchester City.

At the point of his arrival, the Italian explained how he was thrilled to be back in England, describing his move away from the Premier League as “a mistake” after spending two-and-a-half years in Manchester.

Rodgers went as far as dubbing his new signing a “really smart piece of business”, explaining that his arrival was a representation of “outstanding value” for Liverpool, which was far from reinforced by the striker during his time at Anfield.

Why did Liverpool sign Mario Balotelli?

After losing Suarez, Rodgers had to find a fast solution for losing a source for goals as competent as the Uruguay international, who had netted 31 Premier League goals in 33 appearances the season prior.

Realistically, there was no striker fit to replace Suarez, yet someone had to fill the void left by the Reds’ superstar, and Balotelli was considered the right man for the job.

The striker had left the Etihad having scored 30 goals in 80 appearances for City, winning the Premier League title and making the headlines for both his performances on and off the pitch.

In the 2013/14 Serie A campaign, his first after leaving England, the 6 foot 2 forward scored 14 goals in 30 appearances in the league for Inter, which had caught Liverpool’s eye enough for them to capture his signature in the summer.

Suarez couldn’t be replaced, but it was pivotal that a goal-scoring presence was integrated into the squad to give Rodgers’ side a chance to replicate the highs of their second place finish in 2013/14, which couldn’t have been further from the case.

How much did Mario Balotelli earn at Liverpool?

Liverpool evidently thought very highly of Balotelli, as he arrived on Merseyside and was handed the fourth-highest earning contract in the squad, picking up a salary of £5.2m-per-year.

Such an amount equates to £100k-per-week, which only reinforced how Rodgers viewed the Italian with reference to how highly he could impact his squad going forward.

The resources were there for Balotelli to be Liverpool’s saviour after bidding farewell to Suarez, however the only thing missing was the most important element – his performances on the pitch.

How many goals did Mario Balotelli score at Liverpool?

Balotelli only lasted a year at Anfield, before being shipped on loan back to San Siro to become AC Milan’s problem.

During the summer of 2015, Rodgers decided that enough was enough of the £16m striker’s time at Anfield for a moment, as he sanctioned a loan move for him after failing to live up to the hype.

In 28 appearances in all competitions, the £100k-per-week dud scored just four goals, with only one coming in the Premier League, seeing him frozen out of the manager's plans as he was left behind during the club’s pre-season festivities.

It wasn’t just on the pitch that things weren’t working for Balotelli at Liverpool, as he was branded as a “disgrace” by former teammate, Lambert, who told the Bristol Post of his struggles to be around the Italian in training.

Lambert explained that the forward was “infectious” away from the pitch, but had a bad attitude when it came to training, which didn't sit right with the rest of the squad.

Four goals are what Rodgers had left to show for his efforts to sign Balotelli, and by leaving on loan, his time was subsequently up for good on Merseyside, as once he returned, Klopp was manager, and the German made it clear that he had no future at Anfield.

Balotelli departed Merseyside for good after a two-year association, leaving on a free transfer to OGC Nice to attempt to get his career back on track in France.

How much did he cost Liverpool in total?

From the £16m expenditure to bring him to Merseyside to the £5.2m he collected in wages, Liverpool spent an eye-watering total of £21.2m to maintain Balotelli during his single season playing for the club.

When you divide the total that the Reds threw away to accommodate the Italian by what he gave back in goals, it works out that the forward cost the club around £5.3m per goal.

What was most frustrating was that Balotelli went on to score 15 goals in only 23 appearances in the 2016/17 Ligue 1 season, followed by netting 18 in 28 appearances in the 2017/18 term, showing he was still capable of scoring freely.

The Reds were absolutely bled dry by the Italian, in truth, who failed to even closely live up to expectation on Merseyside, leaving Liverpool £21.2m worse off and left to eye another forward shortly after his highly-anticipated arrival.

Tottenham: Spurs eye new "main target" as they chase "bargain Bellingham"

Tottenham Hotspur have apparently set their sights on one club's "vital" Champions League star for manager Ange Postecoglou, and he's been likened to Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham.

Spurs form this season

On the field, Spurs are currently enjoying an unprecedented start to this new Premier League season. Their latest league win, a 2-1 away to Crystal Palace, makes it eight victories out of a possible 10 in the top flight alone. Postecoglou's side are still yet to taste defeat over what has been their most promising first few games since they won a double in 1961.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

"Top of the table is great and the results are great but it's more in the manner we're doing it," said Postecoglou on Spurs' form this season.

"Pretty much from the first game we've had all sorts of different challenges we've had to overcome. Every time there has been a real focus and clear-headedness about the group collectively to deal with that. That has been a really pleasing thing and because they're getting rewards from that then that gives us opportunity to accelerate the growth of giving them more tools out there to help them for whatever we need to overcome."

Despite their incredible run of form, though, it is still believed the Lilywhites could strengthen in January. The winter transfer window represents an opportunity to sign a centre-back alternative to both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. There is a serious lack of cover behind the star defensive duo, so Tottenham are interested in Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah among other options.

An injury to Manor Solomon also leaves Postecoglou short of players who can challenge Dejan Kulusevski out wide, so it has been rumoured that Spurs are keen on Al-Ittihad winger Jota. New names are emerging through sections of the press on a regular basis, and now Real Sociedad midfielder Brais Mendez is a name attracting Tottenham's attention.

Mendez emerges as "main target" for Spurs

Indeed, according to a report out of Spain this week, Mendez is a "main target" for Tottenham as Postecoglou and the club's chiefs plot to sign "high level" players mid-season.

Real Sociedad midfielder Brais Mendez

The attacking midfielder, who's been called a "vital asset" for Sociedad by this update, has enjoyed an exceptional start to the campaign and his Champions League performances have sparked interest from many top sides – including Tottenham.

Mendez has scored three goals already in Europe's most prestigious competition, making him a coveted player heading into January. Spurs apparently want to back Postecoglou with his signing, and it is believed he will cost around £26 million. While England may be a tempting destination for the 26-year-old, Sociedad will apparently fight tooth and nail to keep one of their star players from leaving so soon.

Mendez has been called a "bargain Bellingham" by journalist Tom Weber, who also wrote this about the Spaniard for Football Transfers:

"While the San Sebastian outfit have become one of Europe's most interesting and exciting teams since Imanol Alguacil was given the head coaching job, Mendez has quietly become the side's heartbeat – and he should be looked at by some of Europe's elite teams."

USMNT star Weston McKennie has reportedly turned down a contract offer from Juventus after the Italian giants proposed a reduced salary. According to the midfielder and his representatives swiftly rejected the proposal which would have extended his stay in Turin beyond the end of his current deal which expires in June 2025. Facing the prospect of losing the player for free, Juventus may be tempted to sell the player this summer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The news comes as blow in a season where McKennie has won over his doubters on his return to the club, establishing himself as a key piece of a team that briefly threatened to challenge runaway league leaders Inter. The Texan's consistent performances and driving runs from midfield have won over manager Max Allegri and a sceptical coaching staff.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

McKennie became the first American to play for Juventus when he made his debut for the Old Lady in September 2020. He has since been joined by Timothy Weah, who arrived from Lille last summer – although his future in Turin is also uncertain.

Juventus travel to Rome to face Lazio tomorrow evening but with Inter roaring clear at the top of Serie A and Champions League qualification looking assured, McKennie and company could not be blamed for having one eye on their upcoming Coppa Italia semi-final against the same opponents on Tuesday.

"Impressing" – Fabrizio Romano reacts as Leeds eye move for "good talent"

Leeds United have been linked with a move for an in-demand gem, and Fabrizio Romano has now described him as a “good talent” who is “impressing” for his current employers.

Leeds transfer news

The Whites, under new owners in the 49ers Enterprises and a new manager in Daniel Farke, appear to be doing a solid job in rebuilding things at Elland Road following a woeful 2022/23 campaign in the Premier League. Off the pitch, Leeds made a number of new signings, with the likes of Joe Rodon, Sam Byram, Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara and Joel Piroe all making the move to Yorkshire and becoming regulars under Farke.

Plenty of players headed the other way, and on the pitch, Leeds now seem to be finding their groove following a tricky start. Farke’s side currently sit third in the Championship beating top two Leicester City and Ipswich Town away from home already.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

One eye now seems to be on the January transfer window, with one player to be heavily linked with the short move across Yorkshire being Barnsley’s Fabio Jalo. Recent reports have claimed Leeds are expressing a real interest in securing the services of the 17-year-old, alongside the likes of Brighton, Everton and Fulham.

Writing in his Daily Briefing, relayed by Leeds All Over, Romano has now described the player as a “good talent” who is “impressing” this season and feels there could be clarity on his future in the coming months.

“A good talent, still only 17 years old, impressing at Barnsley this season. There have been links with Leeds United and some Premier League clubs, but honestly I’m not aware of any concrete or advanced negotiations so far – just normal scouting.

“I expect that to be decided in a more clear way between December and January.”

Fabio Jalo profiled

Jalo is only 17 years of age but has already been on the books at Oakwell for a number of years after moving to England from Benfica back in 2019. Since then, the winger, who can play on either side, has now made 16 senior appearances for Barnsley, scoring three goals including a wonder goal on the weekend in the FA Cup. (Fabio Jalo stats – Transfermarkt)

Last year, Jalo was named the club’s Academy Player of the Season and was hailed by academy manager Bobby Hassell, who said:

“Fabio has had an excellent season. He’s top scorer at under 16s and under 18s level and has also played and scored for our under 23s, too.”

Hassell then added:

“Fabio is fully deserving of this award. There were lots of players who stood out – as a collective, our under 18s have been magnificent – but the levels of consistency and maturity he has shown throughout the season have really caught the eye.”

Leeds have brought in the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto as teenagers and turned them into first-team stars in recent years, so Jalo could well be the next, making this one to watch.

Bayern Munich player ratings vs Arsenal: Harry Kane remains king of north London – but Jamal Musiala must do more in the second leg

The Gunners may have salvaged a draw, but they couldn't stop their former Spurs rival from making more history at the Emirates

Sorry, Arsenal, but Harry Kane remains the king of north London! The Gunners may be loving life at the moment, riding high at the top of the Premier League, but they were brought back down to earth by and old and formidable foe in Tuesday's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

In-form Arsenal had made a predictably confident start to this quarter-final first-leg encounter at the Emirates and were good value for the lead given to them by Bukayo Saka, who punished some weak defending from Alphonso Davies, Serge Gnabry and Eric Dier just 12 minutes in.

However, Gnabry sensationally levelled matters after a dreadful misplaced pass from Gabriel Magalhaes put his own team in trouble deep inside their own territory, before Kane inevitably and coolly converted from the penalty spot following William Saliba's clumsy foul on Leroy Sane.

Kane put on a masterclass in the art of hold-up play thereafter, and although Arsenal earned a draw thanks to Leandro Trossard's low finish, the former Spurs man will now be confident of dumping Mikel Arteta's men out of Europe in the return leg.

GOAL rates all of the Bayern players on show as Kane became the highest-scoring non-Arsenal player at the Emirates since it opened in 2006 (six goals)…

Getty Goalkeeper & Defence

Manuel Neuer (6/10):

Conceded twice but nothing he could have done about either goal and was actually rarely called upon until Saka tried to con the referee into giving him a penalty by kicking the goalkeeper in the dying seconds.

Joshua Kimmich (7/10):

Not playing in his preferred position but we know he's a damn fine right-back too, and he had no trouble dealing with Martinelli. Typically excellent on the ball.

Eric Dier (6/10):

The other former Spurs man wasn't always great with his distribution of the ball and he basically invited Saka to put the ball in the bottom left corner for the game's opening goal – but he can be proud of his defensive display in what were difficult circumstances.

Matthijs de Ligt (6/10):

Strong in the air all evening and did a lot of good things – but was sent for a hotdog by Jesus before Trossard equalised.

Alphonso Davies (7/10):

Recovered well from a seriously shaky start, in which he picked up a booking for a foul on Saka that rules him out of the second leg, and started to cause problems going forward in the second half.

Leon Goretzka (7/10):

Created Bayern's leveller with a wonderfully weighted through-ball for Gnabry and put himself about well thereafter. Won't be happy with the way he got beaten by Jesus on the Arsenal equaliser, though.

Konrad Laimer (7/10):

Passing let himself down at times, but worked tirelessly and won back plenty of possession for Bayern. Also made some clever tactical fouls.

Getty ImagesAttack

Leroy Sane (7/10):

Tormented Kiwior, who was hauled off at half-time, and involved in the build-up to the first goal before creating the second with an incisive surge into the Arsenal area that drew a foul from Saliba. Inexplicably replaced midway through the second half, just seconds after creating yet another chance.

Jamal Musiala (5/10):

A seriously underwhelming performance from the attacking midfielder, who was full of running but contributed little going forward and was caught in possession more than once. Bizarre that he stayed on while Sane went off.

Serge Gnabry (7/10):

The former Arsenal man took his chance to equalise after a brilliantly timed run in behind the Gunners backline and had a couple more sights of goal before being forced off through injury with just over 20 minutes to go.

Harry Kane (8/10):

More than held his own in a physical battle with Gabriel, proving a much-needed out-ball for Bayern. His penalty was coolness personified, and he even made one terrific tackle late on.

Kingsley Coman (7/10):

Came on for Sane midway through the second half and after one terribly tame effort, he almost won the game for Bayern with an instinctive near-post flick that came back off the post.

Raphael Guerreiro (5/10):

Replaced the injured Gnabry in the 70th minute but was unable to make much of an impact.

Thomas Tuchel (6/10):

The outgoing, under-fire coach will be thrilled with this result, which keeps Bayern's season alive. However, there's no hiding the fact that his team were gifted a way back into the game – and that he erred badly by taking off Sane.
