How ex-Forest and Man Utd star Jesse Lingard played on debut in South Korea

With the number of signings made by Nottingham Forest over the past two seasons, there are undoubtedly going to be a few players who fail to live up to expectations.

Emmanuel Dennis, who managed to bag ten goals and six assists in a relegated Watford side, joined the Reds in a deal worth around £20m including add-ons.

Remo Freuler joined the Reds in the summer of 2022, having gained a reputation as one of the most influential and efficient centre midfielders in Europe from his time at Atalanta in Serie A.

Nottingham Forest's Emmanuel Dennis

However, after promising starts to life at the City Ground, it quickly became apparent that both players weren't up to scratch for Forest's battle to stay in the Premier League.

Both players barely featured towards the back end of last season, with Dennis and Freuler only playing for 18 minutes combined throughout the remaining six games of the 2022/23 campaign.

Despite their poor performances at the City Ground, the pair were no way near as ineffective as one player who left the club during the summer of 2023.

Jesse Lingard's stats at Nottingham Forest

During the summer of 2022, Jesse Lingard was one of 23 new additions that arrived at the City Ground, with the former Manchester United man arguably the highest profile.

Lingard rejected a move to West Ham United, a club where he scored nine times during 16 appearances in the 2020/21 season, in favour of a move to the City Ground to play under then-boss Steve Cooper.

Upon his arrival in Nottingham, the winger signed a 12-month contract, with Lingard failing to make a real impression during his time in the East Midlands.

He only made 20 appearances in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign, becoming a bit-part player after poor form and multiple injury spells on the sideline.

The former Manchester United attacker failed to register a single goal or assist in the Premier League during his only season with the Reds, with Lingard scoring twice – both goals coming in the Carabao Cup against Blackburn Rovers and Tottenham Hotspur.

It was a far cry from his days in the England set-up and indeed at Old Trafford where he contributed 35 goals in 232 outings.

How Jesse Lingard's K-League debut played out

After being released by Forest in June 2023, Lingard failed to attract any interest from any other Premier League sides, with the 31-year-old without a club until last month when he remarkably joined South Korean side FC Seoul.

Lingard is said to be on just £17.5k-per-week in South Korea, a massive drop of £162k-p/w since his time at the City Ground, with the ex-United man looking to capture some sort of form once again.

A month after his move to Asia, the attacker made his debut a couple of days ago – coming on as a substitute in the 77th minute against Gwangju with the attacker booed as he was introduced to the fixture.

Lingard failed to make an impact during his 13 minutes on the pitch, winning 50% of the duels he contested and only averaging a touch a minute as he was brought on to salvage a point for Seoul.

The attacker also committed a rather cynical foul that saw him receive a yellow card before his side conceded once more, condemning them to a 2-0 defeat and rooting them to the bottom of the K-League 1 table. It's safe to say it was a 'nightmare debut' – as the Mirror put it – for the now 31-year-old.

He's endured a turbulent few years since his Old Trafford departure, with Forest making the right decision in letting the 31-year-old leave after his poor start to life at Seoul.

Edwards sends bid to sign Liverpool’s own Vinicius Jr. in £205k-p/w star

Liverpool supporters have been rocked by the recent revelations that Michael Edwards and co expect Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso to stay put this summer, though fears of disaster have been allayed by the club's anticipation of this, mapping out solid alternative plans.

The second-placed Premier League side will see Jurgen Klopp step down from his duties at the end of the campaign, and while Michael Edwards has returned as FSG's new CEO of Football and Richard Hughes has been appointed as Anfield's sporting director, there's much to sort out.

Chiefly, key trio Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are all out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, with the latter probably the most likely to depart.

Last summer, Salah was at the centre of a £150m proposal from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, rejected, and aged 31, he might feel that Klopp's exit signals the right time to try something new.

Liverpool's summer transfer targets

Should Salah depart, an eventuality inconceivable in itself, Liverpool would need to identify and secure a worthy successor, with Spanish sources – via Football365 – revealing that Real Madrid forward Rodrygo is on the list.

Actually, the versatile Brazilian has already been the subject of an incredible £68m bid from Liverpool, if the report is to be believed, having previously seen a £51m offer flat-out rejected.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

This might seem like an unlikely move on the surface but all the pointers suggest Los Blancos will finally land Kylian Mbappe this summer, with teenage prodigy Endrick also arriving.

Rodrygo, candidly, might not find a place in the project.

Rodrygo's season in numbers

Real Madrid signed Rodrygo when he was just 17 years old for €45m (£40m), the talented teenager joining from Brazilian side Santos, with legendary striker Cristiano Ronaldo leaving for Juventus in an £88m deal that same window.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

Now aged 23, he's amassed 206 appearances for the La Liga table-toppers, scoring 50 goals and supplying 40 assists, with his dynamic performances leading to praise concerning his striking ability, journalist Sam Tighe remarking earlier in the campaign: "Rodrygo’s finishing levels are straight up terrifyingly good."

He's certainly taken great strides in his development as the years have gone by, now combining his natural fleet-footedness and athleticism with polished and sharpened quality in the final third.

In the Spanish top-flight this season, as per Sofascore, Rodrygo has scored eight goals and added five assists across 24 starting appearances, completing 90% of his passes and averaging 1.3 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per game.

He might have suffered a slight regression in output from the dizzying heights of the 2022/23 term, but there's no question that Rodrygo has grown into his skin wonderfully and has everything he needs to succeed in the Premier League at an outfit like Liverpool.

Rodrygo's style of play

While Rodrygo has principally played as a centre-forward for Real Madrid this season, he has found success across both flanks throughout his Spanish career, namely the right.

As per FBref, Rodrygo ranks among the top 15% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 7% for shot-creating actions, the top 1% for pass completion, the top 11% for progressive passes, the top 1% for progressive carries, the top 3% for successful take-ons and the top 9% for interceptions per 90, with his qualities drawing comparisons to some top-class talents.

Veteran Real duo Dani Carvajal and Nacho Fernandez heralded Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo as the club's "magical" duo, and given the likeness between the pair it might be worth Liverpool investing in the latter, with Vinicius Jr. considered one of the world's foremost forwards.

Liverpool have actually been linked with Vinicius Jr. on several occasions in the past, with Spanish reports earlier this season suggesting that those aforementioned Salah and Mbappe transfer facets could have come into play, leaving Liverpool keen to swoop in for the Real Madrid maverick.

It didn't happen, of course, and it's unlikely that Madrid's number seven will be leaving the Santiago Bernabeu any time soon despite the incessant racial discrimination he has battled against, taking the bold and admirable stance to tackle it head-on, and not give in.

From a footballing standpoint, the 23-year-old is a revelation, having plundered 63 goals and 49 goals for Real Madrid since the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

Similarly versatile to Rodrygo, he ranks among the top 17% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 1% for assists, the top 3% for shot-creating actions and the top 1% for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90, praised as "the best player in the world" by his manager Carlo Ancelotti.

While the £205k-per-week Rodrygo has never been considered Real's main man, he is undoubtedly a top-class forward and would be a credit to Liverpool's attack, boasting pace and a protean skill set that would make him the perfect foil for a number of players.

Liverpool have their very own Endrick brewing in "special" teen talent

This rising star might even prove to be a bigger talent than Harvey Elliott.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 29, 2024

Of course, his arrival would likely mean a player has to leave, but if, for example, Salah has entered the final few months of a sensational career on Merseyside, Rodrygo might just be the perfect player to take the baton and spearhead a new era.

Newcastle made mistake signing flop who’s now worth 31x less than Miley

It's safe to say, that before the takeover by the Saudi PIF, Newcastle United made some bizarre signings, with many of the arrivals failing to make an impact at St James' Park.

Joselu, Jack Colback and Matz Sels all arrived on Tyneside during the darker years for the Magpies, with the trio failing to add anything to the squad – with Colback in particular subject to scrutiny after joining the club from arch-rivals Sunderland.

The midfielder went on to make over 100 appearances for the Magpies, with Joselu and Sels finding game time harder to come by. None of the aforementioned players remain at St James', with the club doing a good job of clearing the deadwood in recent years.

However, one signing made by Steve Bruce is somehow still on the books with the club needing to brutally part ways with him this summer after a horrid time in recent seasons.

Jeff Hendrick's stats at Newcastle United

After joining on a free transfer during the summer of 2020, midfielder Jeff Hendrick raised some eyebrows with the former Burnley man a surprise signing, to say the least.

The Republic of Ireland international penned a four-year deal on Tyneside, in a move that would be an absolute disaster for the player and the club.

However, he looked to be an astute piece of business after scoring and assisting on his debut in the 2-0 win against West Ham United, but that would be as good as it got for the former Derby County talent.

Hendrick would make 22 Premier League appearances in his first campaign for the Magpies, before rapidly falling down the pecking order after the takeover.

He would only make three league appearances during the first half of the 2021/22 season, before being shipped out on loan to Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.

West Brom target Jeff Hendrick in action for Reading.

After failing to make an impact at Loftus Road, he's rapidly declined, suffering relegation to League One with Reading last season, before being excluded from Sheffield Wednesday's 27-man squad and not featuring for the Owls since the 2nd of December, before being re-added ahead of their final eight Championship games.

Jeff Hendrick's market value in 2024

Although he joined Bruce's side as a free agent, the 32-year-old had a market value of around £7.6m when he arrived at St James', with his value significantly dropping over the past couple of years.

His rapid decline has seen his value drop 92% in just under four years, with Hendrick now worth 31x less than current Newcastle star Lewis Miley, with the 17-year-old currently worth £18.8m – as per Transfermarkt.

Hendrick also earns a staggering £40k-per-week, with the midfielder bleeding the club dry having earned over £4m since he last played a game for the Magpies.

With his contract expiring this summer, it's about time the club parted ways with the 32-year-old with both parties needing to forget about what has been a complete disaster.

Leeds have already submitted a bid to sign Connor Roberts upgrade

Leeds United could well already be casting an eye as to who they could bring in this summer to improve their already strong squad, with much of that dependant, obviously, on whether they win promotion or not.

The Championship automatic promotion candidates will know that they need to bring in reinforcements in the right-back area as a must, especially when Connor Roberts ups and leaves Elland Road after his short-term loan deal is over.

Connor Roberts

The Whites could potentially try and press on to land the Welshman on a permanent deal, but according to reports, Daniel Farke's men could well be after a £7m-rated talent playing out in Turkey instead to soften the blow of the 28-year-old loanee returning to Turf Moor.

Leeds in the hunt to sign new full-back this summer

Reports from Turkey indicate that Leeds are going back in for breakout Fenerbahce star Bright Osayi-Samuel when the campaign is over and done with, with the once expansive winger turned excellent full-back entering into the final 12 months of his contract when the season is over.

Leeds will, therefore, try and tempt the former Queens Park Rangers man into a return to English football, but he won't be a cheap player to get in through the door in West Yorkshire.

Fenerbahce ace Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Turkish outlet GazeteDamaga are stating that the Whites have already made a move to sign the player, lodging a £7m bid Fenerbahce's way, with a move dependant on whether or not Leeds break out of the Championship and return to the Premier League.

With Osayi-Samuel currently lighting up the Süper Lig it has attracted suitors to his services. Alongside prior fervent interest from other parties in the form of Crystal Palace having the potential to heat up again, this could make for an interesting transfer tussle in the off-season.

Leeds will hope they can come out on top in their pursuit of Osayi-Samuel, who would make Farke and Co forget all about Roberts exiting in the process if he was to sign on the dotted line in West Yorkshire.

Why Osayi-Samuel is an upgrade on Connor Roberts

As much as Roberts is a solid and competent defender, who also has an eye for creating opportunities from down the channels, Osayi-Samuel's raw pace and trickery when slaloming forward could catch so many teams cold if Farke's men return to the top flight at the first time of asking.

A winger by trade during his QPR days – which saw the now 26-year-old full-back pick up 13 goals and 13 assists across an impactful four-season at Loftus Road – Fenerbahce have pulled off a masterstroke morphing Osayi-Samuel into a gung-ho full-back that can devastate opposition defences himself whilst still remaining resolute at the back.

Bright Osayi-Samuel

This season in the Süper Lig, the tenacious 5 foot 9 talent has helped himself to three goals and one assist from just 15 games played from this spot.

A bright 45-minute display against fellow Turkish first-tier side Pendikspor last time out showcases why the Whites are so keen on landing the ex-QPR man, with the Nigerian right-back successfully completing 100% of his dribbles as a slick attacking force.

Yet, Osayi-Samuel didn't just stop there with his duties and ended up winning five of his seven duels and putting in two tackles to ensure his team romped home to a 4-1 victory.

With Leeds excelling this season by putting in electric attacking displays – courtesy of the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Daniel James toying with second-tier defences at points – Osayi-Samuel would slot straight into this attacking philosophy that could take teams by storm in the jump up a division.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke watches a Championship game.

Described as being a "dangerous" player by his former QPR manager Mark Warburton during his time in West London, it will be intriguing to see unfold whether or not Leeds do go all out to sign Osayi-Samuel in the next window and whether or not he flourishes back on English soil.

Arsenal have been linked with the Spain international for many weeks now but are yet to submit a transfer bid for the 28-year-old. Now, Spanish publication claims Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are keeping tabs on him, Sociedad has proposed a new, improved deal that hasn't been accepted, and Arsenal want to sign the midfielder.

Arsenal are looking to end Manchester City's Premier League dominance after a record fourth-straight title and signing a player such as Merino, along with Bologna's Calafiori, is likely to help them towards achieving that goal.

DID YOU KNOW?

Merino, whose contract runs until 2025 at Sociedad, began his career at Osasuna before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2016. That move failed to work out and in 2017 he joined Newcastle United on loan and then made a permanent switch to the Magpies for the next season. The midfielder struggled in the Premier League but has become a top-class player at Sociedad.

Can West Indies bowlers keep up the pressure in decider?

The visitors have most bases covered with their batting, but their bowling is need of a lift against a strong India line-up

The Preview by Saurabh Somani21-Dec-20194:40

The Shami factor and the holy trinity of the WI batting

Big pictureThis is the second successive bilateral series at home in which India have come to the deciding ODI with the series still even. The last time it happened, against Australia, India ended up losing. Is a repeat likely? Perhaps not, given India’s strength in the 50-overs format, but it’s not out of the question. West Indies showed in the first ODI that when their batting and bowling come together, they are a side hard to stop.India have had injury issues with their bowling attack, but the batting wears an extremely powerful look. Shreyas Iyer has settled in as a No. 4 who can explode if coming in late, or rebuild if early wickets have fallen. With Rishabh Pant and Kedar Jadhav to follow, Iyer has become the link between an irrepressible top three and a power-packed finish.Sheldon Cottrell leaps into his action•BCCIWest Indies also have most bases covered with their batting, but their bowling has the tendency to fall apart under pressure. To be fair, when a batting line-up like India’s gets going in familiar conditions, any attack will be under pressure. The best way to counter that for West Indies will be early wickets.Form guideIndia WLWWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
West Indies LWWWWIn the spotlightTwo matches, five balls, four runs, two dismissals. This is alien territory for Virat Kohli, especially in ODIs, and especially against West Indies. He set the scene on fire in the T20Is, but he has barely given spectators enough time to settle down from applauding him to the crease when he has been walking back. Cricket odds don’t work in this fashion but it will take a brave, possibly foolhardy, person to bet against Kohli making a big score in this match. Despite the two failures in this series, he is averaging 71.66 at a strike rate of 97.06 against West Indies. He’s coming into this match on the back of becoming an IPL millionaire, but Sheldon Cottrell had a below-par outing in the second ODI, though he was quite brilliant in the opening game. His first spell there read 5-3-12-2, the wickets being of KL Rahul and Kohli. His left-arm angle, changes of pace, and ability to move the ball off the pitch make him a consistent threat.Virat Kohli watches the ball intently•BCCITeam newsIndia lost Bhuvneshwar Kumar to injury earlier, and are now without Deepak Chahar too. Their replacements are Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini. India’s choice of playing XI will depend on whether they want to go with three seamers or three spinners. If they pick only two seamers, Saini will have to beat Thakur to make it to the XI. He was impressive for Delhi in the recent second round of the Ranji Trophy, while Thakur wasn’t particularly penetrative in the second ODI.India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 KL Rahul, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Navdeep Saini, 11 Shardul Thakur/Yuzvendra ChahalWest Indies need a lift in their bowling, but they might want to keep faith in the same attack that did duty in the second ODI. One of the swaps possible is bringing back legspinner Hayden Walsh Jr for left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, but Walsh Jr didn’t seem to have his captain’s confidence in the first ODI, when he bowled only five overs. And considering India plundered 387 in the second ODI, Pierre’s economy rate of 6.88 across nine overs was commendable.West Indies (probable) 1 Ewin Lewis, 2 Shai Hope (wk), 3 Shimron Hetmyer, 4 Roston Chase, 5 Nicholas Pooran, 6 Kieron Pollard (capt), 7 Jason Holder, 8 Keemo Paul, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Khary Pierre, 11 Sheldon CottrellPitch and conditionsThe last ODI at this ground was played nearly three years ago, and it was a very high-scoring one. India made 381 for 6 and England responded with 366 for 8. There haven’t been List A matches at the ground since March 2017, though in the domestic T20s earlier this year, the scoring rates, in general, were not high.Iyer said on the eve of the match that the pitch will be “really fast” in the second innings and the dew factor will play a “massive role”.Stats and trivia The last time India lost two consecutive multi-game bilateral series at home was back in April 2005, when Pakistan beat them 4-2, with West Indies having won 4-3 in November 2002 in the bilateral series before that. India haven’t played Chahal and Yadav together in a game in a while, but the stats when they do play together are pretty good, with India having a win-loss ratio of 2.66. They have won 24 games and lost just nine, with one no result.

A virada

Spurs messed up with £30m Poch signing who’s now worth less than £1m

Over the last few years, Tottenham Hotspur have been extremely successful in the transfer market, with the last summer window serving as evidence of that.

It seems that Daniel Levy will now only attempt to sign a player if they present good value for their quality and potential, with James Maddison setting them back £40m the perfect example.

James Maddison with Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League.

However, that hasn’t always been the case for the Lilywhites, with the club being forced to cut ties with expensive transfers, receiving very little in return.

There is one former Spurs player who particularly comes to mind here, well and truly never living up to his price tag.

Moussa Sissoko's time at Spurs in numbers

In 2016, Moussa Sissoko left Newcastle United after an impressive 37-game Premier League campaign where he scored once and provided eight assists.

Tottenham would be his next destination after Mauricio Pochettino agreed on a deal worth £30m for the signature of the powerful French midfielder.

However, during his first campaign at the club, Sissoko failed to have any real influence on the side, and even though he made 25 appearances, he only started eight times.

In the following season, the former Magpies ace featured much more frequently after discovering a new role as a right-sided central midfielder in a three-back variation, which saw the number 17 use his athleticism to provide support to the often on-rushing wingback.

After showcasing his versatility, Sissoko started 27 Premier League games in the 2018/19 term, and he started one more match in the next campaign, but his Spurs career declined from that point on.

Spurs star sold for £11m would be worth more than Van de Ven in 2024 money

This one-time Spurs player was “different class” back in the day…

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 26, 2024 What Moussa Sissoko is doing in 2024

After years of being a reliable member of the squad, Sissoko eventually left Tottenham in 2021, as he signed for Watford for a small fee of £2.5m.

This was obviously quite a low figure for a player who had been a constant in the Spurs side, but nevertheless, the midfielder went on to start 36 matches for the Hornets before leaving the recently relegated side.

In the summer of 2022, the former Tottenham ace returned to France to play for Ligue 1 side Nantes, which is where he still plays his football to this day.

However, his value has massively dropped since moving, and as a 34-year-old, he is now estimated to be worth as little as £771k, according to FootballTransfers.

Giovani Lo Celso

£9m

Ben Davies

£8.8m

Bryan Gil

£8m

Fraser Forster

£1.1m

Moussa Sissoko

£700k

As you can see, this would make Sissoko the least valuable player at Spurs if he were still at the club today, even below backup goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Unfortunately, it’s no surprise to see that the 6 foot 2 midfielder’s value has plummeted so much, especially when you consider his age, performances, and the fact that he’s playing for a relegation-threatened side.

Overall, despite being a solid player during his spell at Spurs, Sissoko never truly lived up to his £30m price tag, which seems like nothing today. In truth, it was a large sum eight years ago.
