Rodri was named the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner last month, pipping Madrid's Vinicius Jr to the coveted accolade. After the 28-year-old sent a warning of sorts to the winger, the Brazilian's compatriot Neymar has come to his aid with a dig at the Spaniard.

AdvertisementWHAT RODRI AND NEYMAR SAID

Rodri said this week: “I think he's [Vinicius Jr] an intelligent guy and he'll realise over time that the more he pays attention to the pitch, the better he'll be. Like everyone, he has areas for improvement both on and off the pitch. He's young, I'm sure that people will give him good advice and even more so when he's at Madrid. It's a club with values.”

Then, in an Instagram post, Al-Hilal's Neymar commented: "He [Rodri] became a talker now."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

There has seemingly been some bad blood over this Ballon d'Or award, which started with Madrid boycotting the Paris ceremony when they found out Vinicus wasn't going to win. And it seems these latest comments may just add fuel to the fire.

£200k-per-week star prepared to leave Chelsea after message from Maresca

A £200,000-per-week member of the Chelsea squad is prepared to leave amid interest from Premier League champions Man City, and coming after a message from new head coach Enzo Maresca recently.

Players who could be next to leave Chelsea this summer

Midfielder Conor Gallagher's move to Atletico Madrid is now on standby, coming after the Blues' move for their striker, Samu Omorodion, collapsed due to rumoured contractual issues (Sky Sports).

Chelsea could now offer £150k-per-week ace with Lukaku to seal Osimhen deal

The Nigerian is back on their radar after failing to sign Omorodion.

Omorodion was meant to join Chelsea on a seven-year contract in a transfer worth around £35 million (Fabrizio Romano), which would've paved the way for Gallagher to complete his move to Atletico, but the transfer domino has ceased for now thanks to a breakdown in terms regarding the former.

Chelsea's midfielder has now been forced to fly back to London, despite completing his Atletico medical, with all the necessary documentation also completed.

As Chelsea open talks to sign Joao Felix as an Atletico alternative to Omorodion, and one who could re-open the door for Gallagher to make his La Liga move, there are still a host of other players expected to depart Stamford Bridge before deadline day.

Wantaway striker Romelu Lukaku has agreed a three-year deal to join Napoli, a transfer which will have a profound effect on Chelsea's potential deal for Victor Osimhen, as it is believed the two clubs could strike a deal for the latter to join Maresca and the former to reunite with Antonio Conte.

Uncertainty also surrounds the futures of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, defender Trevoh Chalobah, midfielder Cesare Casadei and striker Armando Broja – who have all been linked with an exit in the past fortnight.

Romano has even claimed that £325,000-per-week winger Raheem Sterling will be allowed to leave Chelsea if Felix joins, despite the England winger knowing Maresca well from their time together at City.

Ben Chilwell prepared to leave Chelsea after Maresca message

According to TEAMtalk, another big-name Englishman who could opt to leave west London is left-back Ben Chilwell.

The £200,000-per-week defender was injured for large periods last season but did captain the club on many occasions. He unfortunately missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024 due to his lack of action, and Chilwell has been linked with a Chelsea exit previously this summer.

Now, TT say Chilwell is prepared to leave Chelsea and Man City are considering whether to move in, coming after a press conference message from Maresca left a bitter taste in the 27-year-old's mouth regarding his suitability.

“The Chilly situation is a bit delicate," said Maresca.

“We are trying to find a solution for him in terms of a position. He probably needs a bit of time. By delicate I mean in terms of finding his best position, not in terms of [his future at the club].

“We want players that can perform at 100 percent in their positions. I am sure, for instance, Malo [Gusto] and Reece [James] can both do the work required of them in the next two-three days and they can both finish with more assists, or be more dangerous, than they were in the past. In that position, they are good enough to make ‘last passes’ or get some assists because their quality is very good.”

Chilwell has apparently taken a 'dim view' towards this suggestion that he doesn't have enough quality to start in his usual position, and it is a situation which Pep Guardiola's side are open to pouncing on. It is believed Chelsea would demand a minimum of £40 million to consider selling before deadline day.

McCullum: Airport incident 'not ideal' but England handling scrutiny well

Trouble in paradise as Noosa tightens on England's Ashes hopes

It came after a member of England’s security staff made contact with a Seven Network cameraman on Saturday at Brisbane airport, trying to block him from filming the team.Cricket Australia (CA) media directives state that teams are not available for interview while in transit, but can be filmed “from a respectful distance”.England captain Ben Stokes was also unhappy with an Adelaide journalist who breached those guidelines on Saturday, annoyed he had been recorded from close distance. The tourists have been heavily scrutinised since touching down in Australia, at times becoming the butt of jokes while going 2-0 down in the series and with their aggressive style of play not working.Stokes went as far as to pose for a photo with a radio duo during the team’s highly-publicised break in Noosa, as they held up signs referencing “moral victories” and “Bazball”.”I didn’t see [the airport incident], but obviously it wasn’t ideal,” McCullum said on Sunday. “But hopefully it’s been dealt with and everyone’s able to move on.”Obviously, we know coming to Australia, there’s a lot of eyeballs, there’s a lot of intensity and scrutiny on everything we do. I feel like we’ve managed ourselves pretty well throughout this tour. I thought the boys were outstanding.”The last week we’ve had, they’re engaging with a lot of the locals and everyone was in good spirits. There was some good banter flying both ways and I think everyone treated it [well] and respected it.”McCullum also defended England’s decision to go to Noosa, with the trip having been booked well in advance given the gap between the Perth and Adelaide Tests.”It was quite an important period,” the beleaguered coach said. “We could give ourselves a chance to allow some of the lessons we’ve learnt over the last couple of weeks to settle and to recalibrate a little bit. I think now the freshness which we come into this Test match with will hopefully pay off.”McCullum’s comments came as Green admitted he felt sorry for the tourists, admitting he too battled to grow accustomed to the spotlight put on players.”You never like getting filmed, especially when you want to get away from it,” Green said.  “There’s always sympathy for anyone in life that’s getting filmed in public or in a private space. It’s never a nice feeling.”

21-year-old now very likely to join Man Utd after Arsenal exit decision

After highly-rated young forward Chido Obi-Martin, it appears another player could be about to swap Arsenal for Manchester United this summer.

Obi-Martin seals Man United switch from Arsenal

After scoring a hugely impressive 32 goals in just 18 league appearances for Arsenal's Under-18s, Obi-Martin decided not to remain at the Emirates Stadium past the expiry of his contract, despite the club's attempts to keep him for Mikel Arteta.

Before ultimately deciding to make the move to United, where he could work under Erik ten Hag in the first team sooner rather than later, going by his academy performances, the 16-year-old also attracted interest from Bayern Munich in Germany.

Arsenal were desperate to keep hold of Obi-Martin, according to reliable journalist Charles Watts, but their best efforts were not enough for the young attacker – who decided a switch to Old Trafford was best for his career.

“Arsenal are working hard to try and keep Chido Obi Martin at the club,” Watts said, before his exit.

“We’ve seen strong links to Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund this summer, and it’s no secret that both German clubs are pushing to lure Arsenal’s bright young talent away after his exceptionally prolific form at youth level.

“But Arsenal remain in talks with Obi Martin’s camp and as far as I’m aware nothing has been decided yet when it comes to the striker’s future. Arsenal do not want to lose him and they have made that clear during recent talks. A first professional contract is on the table that could be signed the moment he turns 17.

“But he is not 17 until December and so Arsenal remain vulnerable to the in-demand striker leaving before then. They are hoping, however, that all the groundwork that has been done over the last few months will prove successful and he will stay and continue his development in North London.”

While Obi-Martin is a free agent, United still had to pay a compensation fee to Arsenal, resulting in a delay in announcing the teenager's signing despite him already completing his medical.

Hubert Graczyk very likely to join Man Utd from Arsenal

According to Polish news outlet WP SportoweFakty, another player who could follow an identical path to Obi-Martin is 21-year-old goalkeeper Hubert Graczyk.

The shot-stopper, who was released upon the expiry of his Arsenal contract this summer, could join Obi-Martin in Manchester on a similar free deal to become Ten Hag's fourth-choice keeper.

The outlet claims Graczyk is very likely to join Man United after leaving Arsenal, with Carrington looking more and more like a potential landing spot for ex-Gunner academy players.

The Pole spent part of last season on loan at Slough Town in the National League South and made 31 appearances in total for Arsenal's Under-23s in total before leaving.

Timm van der Gugten muscles in to leave Yorkshire grateful for empty stands

There has surely never been a bleaker start to the Championship season than this, well, not since last year anyway. Cricket took place at Headingley, but it was cold comfort, staged stoically in front of empty stands in the hope of better times ahead.Perhaps Yorkshire can be grateful the stands were empty. As Glamorgan played with startling enterprise to turn 132 for 7 into 310 for 8 by the close, Headingley was not quite the same without a few derisive cries of “Rubbish, Yorkshire!” and “Call yourself Champions!” (They’re not but that’s just unnecessary detail). They’ll all be watching on in-house streaming services and can be trusted to store up resentment for when the crowds finally return.Timm van der Gugten was Glamorgan’s unlikely batting stalwart. His career-best 80 not out at No. 9, from 134 balls, was an innings of optimistic muscularity and only the fourth time he had passed 50. A rebellious stand of 122 in 33 overs with Dan Douthwaite was followed by some hearty wind-ups by Michael Hogan, who walked off with 40 and will have visions of his fourth first-class fifty in the morning.Batting mayhem from the lower orders is hard enough to bear on the hottest days when the pitch is flat and the sun beats down, but somehow it is crueller still when a fast bowler can’t feel his fingers and a pitch he imagined might be his friend has lost interest.Douthwaite produced the most considered resistance in that late spree. He failed to break through at Surrey and Warwickshire and was given his chance at Glamorgan during studies at Cardiff University. After a decent all-round season in 2019, he had a stint at No. 6 last summer, but he was back at eight, at least for now.Douthwaite was finally silenced with the second new ball five overs old when he allowed a delivery from Ben Coad to strike his off stump. He will relish memories of a hooked six against Duanne Olivier which was high enough to have required stepladders. Telling Olivier it’s not a pitch for bouncers is like advising Piers Morgan to avoid publicity.Even Douthwaite’s belligerence came with moments of fortune, most notably in a wild slog against Matthew Fisher which careered over slips. As the seamers flagged, he deposited the offspin of Joe Root over long-on for six in a manner that informed Root that part-time offspin might have its moments in international cricket, but it had no place on a freezing day of the Championship in April.Six years have now passed since Yorkshire’s back-to-back Championships under the stewardship of Jason Gillespie, and Mark Arthur, Yorkshire’s chief executive, has told the annual meeting on Zoom that the county can boast its strongest squad in his near-decade in charge. In these parts that represents title talk – and leaving out David Willey did suggest either strength in depth, misguided selection or a little bit of both. Willey appeared as 12th man at one point in a hi-vis jacket, Yorkshire woolly hat and face mask which was not how it used to be done in the days of Lord Hawke.Douthwaite’s misjudgement extended the disastrous leave-alones to three, one in each session. Without them, Glamorgan’s situation could have been even better. Fisher, who, at 23, needs to kick on this summer to justify the expectations of his teenaged years, tailed the ball in slightly to hit the off stumps of David Lloyd in the morning and Callum Taylor after lunch.Glamorgan’s gusto brought life to these strange, slightly artificial proceedings. Infection rates may be falling fast, but Yorkshire is now Covid Central according to figures from Centre for Cities, which suggests that seven of the top eight towns and cities for new infections are in the county. The storm is not yet weathered.Nevertheless, Championship cricket has withstood jokes for at least half-a-century about how nobody watches it, which suggests it is perfectly designed to play to quarter-full grounds from May 17. Even those who do turn up tend to prefer their own company so much that they inventing social distancing long before anybody had even heard of the phrase. Before van der Gugten and Douthwaite wrested attention, pre-match interest had centred upon only the second cricket meeting of the Root brothers, the previous being a Royal London Cup tie four years ago. “I’ve not seen him since September,” observed Billy, who has been locked down in Wales while Joe pushed his Test batting average towards 50 with impressive shows in Sri Lanka and India.Reintroductions were made from third slip as Billy reached the wicket at 29 for 3. He fashioned Glamorgan’s early resistance with a workmanlike 43, and narrowly survived being run out by Joe on 38 when he pushed Fisher into the off side, chanced a single and was short of his ground when the throw missed the stumps. Coad eventually dismissed him, from around the wicket, leaving him for Jonny Tattersall to hold a low catch to his left. There was a flirty half-century, too, for Kiran Carlson, who seems to like a square drive.Yorkshire will need to be more resourceful when they are up against it if their imagined title challenge is to materialise. The new-ball pair of Fisher and Coad can sustain them, but the captain, Steve Patterson, is 37 now, and Olivier must dream on days like this of the hot sun and fast, bouncy pitches of his native South Africa.

Brexit paperwork delay leaves Graeme van Buuren in Gloucestershire limbo

Allrounder left out of Championship clash with Hampshire after losing non-overseas status

Matt Roller22-Apr-2021Graeme van Buuren, the South African-born allrounder, has been ruled out of Gloucestershire’s County Championship fixture against Hampshire after the complications of Brexit lost him his status as a non-overseas player.Van Buuren, 30, was born in Pretoria and played for Northerns and Titans in South Africa early in his career. He has been playing for Gloucestershire as a local player since 2016 through his wife’s British passport, and has become a first-team regular in all formats. However, the UK’s departure from the European Union led to a change in the ECB’s eligibility and registration regulations on December 31, 2020. In September, Alan Fordham, the operations manager for first-class cricket, wrote to the counties outlining the changes, including the removal of “the rights of so-called ‘Kolpak’ players to be registered as a ‘qualified cricketer'” and the cancellation of the registrations of players qualifying as locals through EU passports or family or ancestral visas, unless they had evidence of having settled or pre-settled status under the government’s settlement scheme. In van Buuren’s case, he had applied for indefinite leave to remain in the UK as a pathway to British citizenship, but delays in processing his paperwork have left him in a state of limbo. As a result, he has only been able to play as an overseas player, and with Daniel Worrall and Kraigg Brathwaite filling Gloucestershire’s two permitted spots in their fixture against Hampshire this week, van Buuren has been left out of the side, two weeks after hitting a match-winning 110 not out off 98 balls against Surrey. It is understood that van Buuren would have been able to apply for indefinite leave to remain through a fast-tracked service, but the logistical complications caused by Covid-19 have taken that option away from him.Related

Gloucestershire do not know how long the delay will take, but do not anticipate it being a long-term issue. Van Buuren is still registered as a player – clubs are able to register three overseas players for the two spots in their side – and may be rotated into the side in later rounds of fixtures, given Gloucestershire have not fielded a frontline spinner in his absence.”Graeme van Buuren, having been a Gloucestershire player and Bristol resident for the last five years, has to date been playing cricket in the UK as a non-overseas player,” a club statement said. “He has built a life in the UK, is married to a British citizen, and is settled in Bristol with two young children born in the city during his time at the club.”Earlier in the year, having completed the requisite five years in the UK, Graeme started the process of applying for his “indefinite leave to remain” as a pathway to British Citizenship. This was anticipated to allow him to play, under recently changed regulations, as an England-qualified player from the early part of this season. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in delays in the UK government processing his paperwork and the impact of Brexit means that the rights previously afforded to him are no longer available in the UK.”Graeme has played a huge part in the two victories of the 2021 season so far and is an integral member of the Gloucestershire cricket family. The club, along with the Professional Cricketers Association (PCA), continue to support his application and the speedy resolution of what is a very difficult period for Graeme and his family.”

Arsenal struck gold on "wizard" worth more than Nelson & Nketiah combined

There are less than two weeks remaining of the summer transfer window and, as things stand, it feels like Arsenal still have a lot to do.

Mikel Arteta has only welcomed one new face to the first team in Riccardo Calafiori thus far, although recent reports indicate that Mikel Merino should be joining the team very soon.

It's not just incomings that need to be sorted out before the window closes, though, as both Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson continue to be touted for an exit, although the links for the former are far more robust at present.

Arsenal strikerEddie Nketiah

The two Hale Enders have been on the team's periphery for some time now, although it does look like the club could make a significant amount of money on their sales. However, even when combined, their fees won't even come close to the valuation of one of Arteta's best signings in North London.

The latest on Nketiah and Nelson

It's been a wild couple of weeks for Nketiah, as it looked like he would be joining Roberto de Zerbi at Marseille just a week ago, only for Arsenal to turn down their final offer, which amounted to around £25m.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Since that move fell apart, Nottingham Forest have emerged as the team that look most likely to sign the Englishman, with The Athletic's David Ornstein reporting on Monday that the Gunners had also turned down their offer of around £25m including add-ons.

However, Ornstein has claimed that negotiations are ongoing between the two sides, with the Gunners sticking to their valuation of between £30m and £35m for the striker.

Now, when it comes to Nelson, things are a little less clear beyond the fact that the North Londoners are looking to sell him this summer.

At the moment, it looks like Leicester City have maintained their interest in him, but according to the Telegraph, his wages are currently proving to be a stumbling block.

Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson

If he were to be sold, it would likely be for his £20m valuation, meaning that if the Gunners were able to get exactly what they wanted for the two attackers, they would earn a cool £55m, and while that's a lot of money, it pales in comparison to the valuation of one of Arteta's best signings to date.

Martin Odegaard's valuation in 2024

The signing in question is Martin Odegaard, who completed his £34m move to the club in the summer of 2021 after impressing on loan six months prior.

Since then, he has only gone from strength to strength and now, according to the CIES Football Observatory, is worth up to a staggering €117m, which converts to about £100m, or at least £45m more than the combined valuations of Nketiah and Nelson.

It's an entirely justified valuation as well because, alongside his incredible skill and ability, he's become a real leader on the pitch, earning the captain's armband just a year after signing.

Moreover, in his 154 appearances for the North Londoners, he's scored 35 goals and provided 25 assists, meaning he has averaged a goal involvement once every 2.56 games since making the move four years ago.

It's not just his output that is impressive either, as according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League, the Norwegian "wizard", as dubbed by footballer Babayele Sodade, sits in the top 1% of midfielders for shot-creating actions and touches in the opposition penalty area, the top 2% for progressive passes, the top 3% for non-penalty expected goals plus expected assists and the top 4% for actual assists and total shots, all per 90.

Ultimately, Arteta has made several brilliant signings during his time at Arsenal, but Odegaard might be his very best, and the fact that he is worth so much more than two other players combined helps prove that fact.

Arsenal now keen to sign £65m Premier League striker instead of Gyokeres

Arsenal are keen to sign a Premier League winner this summer as their hunt for attacking reinforcements heats up, according to one recent report.

Arsenal waiting on departures for statement signing

Like an overflowing nightclub, it seems clear that Mikel Arteta's side are now operating on a one-in, one-out policy ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Riccardo Calafiori's arrival has been the only major piece of business in north London so far this summer, with three other deals including two young goalkeepers and the anticipated permanent move for David Raya following his loan spell in the 2023-24 season.

Much of that has been down to sales; the Gunners parted ways with academy talent Emile Smith Rowe in a deal worth £34m last week, but that was their first sale of the summer with five more players leaving either on loan or for free.

As a consequence of Smith Rowe's exit, Mikel Merino's arrival from Real Sociedad, ostensibly to play in the same midfield role, has accelerated with personal terms having been agreed for the EURO 2024 winner.

The same is likely to happen in their frontline, with both Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson free to leave this summer should their valuations be met. Arsenal are believed to be holding out for £30m to part ways with Nketiah, while Nelson is attracting attention from across the Premier League as he seeks his own new challenge away from north London, just 12 months on from penning a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.

Should they depart, the Gunners are eyeing up a former Premier League winner to replace them.

Arsenal target Premier League striker

That comes as reports link Arsenal with a surprise move for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke, with the English striker having enjoyed an excellent 2023-24 season with the Cherries.

Solanke still has three years left to run on his £70,000 a week deal at the Vitality Stadium, but has also been linked with a move to north London rivals Tottenham as clubs look to prise him away from the south coast.

The 26-year-old was part of Chelsea's Premier League title-winning squad in 2016/17 and has since forged a career for himself at Bournemouth, and found the net on 19 occasions last season, his best-ever Premier League return.

Now, Caught offside claim that Arsenal "have turned their attention" to Solanke after refusing to pay the asking price for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, with a deal for the Swede now considered "very unlikely".

They add that Bournemouth do not want to sell the striker this summer, but that his contract on the south coast "contains a £65m release clause" which can be activated by any of the "big six" Premier League sides.

It means that Solanke could end up being a far cheaper option than the likes of Gyokeres or Victor Osimhen, who the Gunners have also been linked with, while Solanke is also "believed to be open" to the idea of leaving the Vitality Stadium this summer.

Is he the striker Arsenal should be looking to sign in the final weeks of the window?
