Bancroft's century sets early marker in Test opening race

Teague Wyllie fell just short of a ton as Western Australia ground down the visitors at two runs an over

Tristan Lavalette05-Oct-2023Former Test opener Cameron Bancroft made an early season statement with a disciplined century to frustrate Victoria’s attack on a sedate WACA pitch to put Western Australia in a strong position in the Sheffield Shield.WA trailed by 19 runs at stumps on day two after Bancroft and Teague Wyllie combined for a 193-run second-wicket partnership.Wyllie, 19, fell short of his second first-class century when he was bowled by quick Mitchell Perry, shouldering arms as the ball nipped back to hit the top of middle stump. It was the only wicket on an attritional day, where WA scored 208 runs off 96 overs.Related

After finishing unbeaten on 121 off 306 balls, Bancroft started his case to replace veteran opener David Warner, who is set to retire from Test cricket this summer. Bancroft has not played Tests since the Ashes in 2019.With fringe Test opener Marcus Harris not playing due to the birth of his first child, Bancroft seized his opportunity on the back of being the standout batter in the Shield last season.Even though he scored 289 more runs than second-placed South Australia batter Daniel Drew, Bancroft did not make the Ashes touring squad but issued a reminder of his indefatigable approach. It was a fitting performance for Bancroft with his mentor Justin Langer, who has acted as his private coach, at the ground.Resuming at 29 for 1, Bancroft and Wyllie dug in as WA scored just 46 runs in 30 overs during a slow first session.WA coach Adam Voges recently said domestic teams might consider adopting elements of Bazball, believing England’s aggressive approach would inevitably creep into the Shield, but Bancroft and Wyllie didn’t get the memo. The pair were forced to stonewall against typically accurate bowling from quick Scott Boland, who had clean bowled WA captain Sam Whiteman in the shadows late on day one.The first boundary was not struck until 45 minutes into the day’s play as Boland – armed with four slips – relentlessly probed outside the off-stump but without reward.WA did not cross 100 runs until midway through the day’s play, but Bancroft and Wyllie started to take advantage of a tiring Victoria in warm conditions.Though a green-tinge was still notable, the pitch flattened under the baking sun as WA eyes a big total with temperatures set to soar on day three.”I think we’re going to try to bat as long as we can…hopefully bat just once,” Wyllie said.Disciplined and playing straight, Bancroft and Wyllie batted in contrast to Victoria who were left to rue gifting several wickets late on on the opening day.Wyllie started last season spectacularly when he famously resisted celebrating his maiden first-class century in the Shield opener against New South Wales. But his form tailed off, perhaps unsurprisingly given his age, as teams exposed him outside the off stump. Wyllie only scored one half-century for the rest of the season, but WA stuck with him and he was at the crease when their title triumph was complete against Victoria.Much like at stages last season, Wyllie was similarly bogged down against Victoria’s accurate pace attack but he dug in alongside Bancroft. The smattering of fans did grow restless, but there were no bronx cheers echoing from the terraces like when Victoria batter Ashley Chandrasinghe produced a painstaking 46 off 280 balls in last season’s final. With solid defence and powers of endurance, like his idol Rahul Dravid, Wyllie kept his composure and made his move in the second session. As temperatures approached 30 degrees celsius, sensing Victoria’s attack was flagging, Wyllie put the foot down to reach his half-century amid three boundaries off Boland. While Wyllie was scoring mostly through boundaries, Bancroft calmly nudged the ball around to pick off the bowling. A rare moment of aggression was against Test offspinner Todd Murphy when Bancroft, an accomplished white-ball batter, hit a reverse sweep to the boundary.Wyllie also took a liking to Murphy, striking several lusty blows after advancing down the pitch. After another quiet patch following Bancroft’s century, Wyllie agonisingly fell short of a ton almost exactly a year since his maiden century earned him national prominence.

Harmanpreet, Webb and Hayward combine as Renegades thump Strikers

India’s captain made 43 not out in a decisive partnership with Webb and took two wickets to dismantle the defending champions for 86

A decisive 93-run stand between Courtney Webb and Harmanpreet Kaur followed by a crafty bowling display led by Ella Hayward and Hayley Matthews helped Melbourne Renegades to a thumping upset win over defending WBBL champions Adelaide Strikers at the Junction Oval.Webb made 49 not out and Harmanpreet remained unbeaten on 43 as the pair controlled the second half of Renegades’ innings against an impressive Strikers bowling unit to post a competitive 167 for 3 after being sent into bat.Related

Renegades spinners, led by Hayward and Matthews in the powerplay, as well as Sarah Coyte strangled Strikers in the chase. The trio picked up two wickets each and Coyte produced a stunning direct-hit run out off her own bowling to dismiss Bridget Patterson as Strikers’ chase never gained any momentum against the disciplined bowling performance.Renegades’ batting display was steady without being spectacular. They were aided by some shoddy Strikers fielding with Jemma Barsby spilling two catches.Strikers started well with Georgia Adams removing Matthews for 12, but she strangely only bowled one over for the innings. Tammy Beaumont and Josie Dooley both made starts and threatened to break free at times during a 51-run stand but neither were able to kick on. Both fell within an over of each other to leave Renegades precariously placed at 74 for 3 in the 10th over.Harmanpreet and Webb assessed the situation and did not panic despite both scoring at less than a run-a-ball through the first 40 runs of their partnership, including only taking 14 runs off the power surge. But they scored 39 runs off the last 14 balls of the innings finding the boundary eight times against Amanda-Jade Wellington, Danielle Gibson and Megan Schutt. Webb struck five of them and Harmanpreet three. The chase never got going as Hayward bowled four of the first nine overs of the innings and picked up the key wickets of Laura Wolvaardt and Katie Mack. Hayward’s lengths and lines were superb as she rarely gave the stumps away. Wolvaardt was stumped trying to launch over long-off but was completely deceived in flight. Mack was also beaten in flight as she miscued to mid-off.Coyte dropped an easy catch in the deep off Tahlia McGrath that threatened to be costly but she more than made up for it with a stunning run out. Patterson drove a ball towards long-on and took off for a single, Coyte dived full length to her right, gathered in the right hand and threw in the one motion while laying on her stomach and produced a direct hit as Patterson tried to scramble back at the striker’s end.McGrath holed out off Matthews and the chase fell apart from there. Strikers lost their last seven wickets for just 21 runs. Harmanpreet and Georgia Wareham chimed in with two wickets each as India’s captain was named player of the match.

Sri Lanka Cricket suspended by ICC board

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has been suspended by the ICC with immediate effect because of extensive government interference in the board’s administration.Though the ICC has termed the sanction a “suspension”, it is in reality a warning as the ICC seeks to prevent further government interference in the running of SLC. In fact, it is understood that SLC itself had requested the suspension, in order to illustrate to Sri Lanka’s government that the ICC will not tolerate further meddling on its part.”As a Full Member, it is our right to go to the ICC,” SLC vice-president Ravin Wickramaratne told ESPNcricinfo*. “The government will have to give 100% assurance that there will be no interference. Otherwise, the suspension will mean that Sri Lanka can’t play cricket. You saw what happened to Zimbabwe [in 2019, Zimbabwe Cricket had been suspended by the ICC over government interference].”The suspension will not have any immediate serious impact on Sri Lankan cricket. Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign ended on Thursday and there is no cricket happening in the country until December. No ICC funds are due to go to SLC until January.Related

While the ICC’s quarterly meetings are scheduled for November 18-21 in Ahmedabad, the ICC board met online on Friday to address the SLC situation – government interference in all spheres from administration to finance and even matters concerning the national team. The next course of action will be decided when the ICC Board meets on November 21.The ICC also continues to recognise SLC president Shammi Silva, who is likely to be present at the ICC meetings in Ahmedabad as the ICC Board has allowed SLC representatives to be present in an observer capacity. Silva is understood to be at the centre of the ICC’s move to suspend SLC.”The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka,” the ICC said in a statement. “The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course.”On Monday, Sri Lanka’s sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe had sacked the SLC board and installed an interim committee headed by Arjuna Ranatunga, but Sri Lanka’s courts essentially reinstated the board a day later by issuing a 14-day stay order on the gazette that dissolved the board.Since then, the affairs of Sri Lanka Cricket have been debated at length in the country’s parliament. But as of Friday, when the ICC suspension came, it was the elected SLC board headed by Silva that was running cricket in the country.Even if the interim committee was in power, the appointment of such committees by the government had not prompted suspension by the ICC before. The previous occasion when an interim committee was in place, from 2014 to 2015, resulted in the ICC putting the funds due to SLC in escrow, and demoted SLC to observer status at board meetings. But they remained a member of the ICC officially.Sri Lanka’s sports minister has also had the role of ratifying all Sri Lankan national teams, as per the nation’s sports law, which has been in place since 1973.SLC is the second Full Member to be suspended by ICC in the last four years after Zimbabwe Cricket was suspended in 2019 for similar reasons. However, unlike in Zimbabwe’s case, where all cricket activities in the country were abruptly shut down, in addition to a freeze on funding, the ICC will tread carefully in Sri Lanka’s case.

The top three totals at this World Cup belong to South Africa, including the only one over 400, which is also the highest tournament total ever. Six of the 19 hundreds scored so far come from South Africans. The leading run-scorer so far – Quinton de Kock – is South African and he also has the best individual score to date.In his 150th ODI, de Kock slammed 174 – 14 short of the South African record still held by Gary Kirsten – and 26 shy of a double-ton, which batting coach JP Duminy confirmed is on de Kock’s wishlist as something to achieve before he quits the format after this World Cup. That de Kock appears to have saved his best for last has been obvious since the Sri Lanka game in Delhi but to suggest he is simply throwing his bat in his last few innings and hoping for the best would be doing a disservice to a player in scintillating touch.Click here to read the full analysis from Firdose Moonda in MumbaiMust Watch: Shane Bond and Cheteshwar Pujara on South Africa’s success1:44

Elanga’s move follows a standout 2024-25 campaign in which he contributed 17 goal involvements and played every Premier League game for Forest.

Newcastle apologise to fans after potentially 'offensive' flag is spotted in third kit launch video ahead of 2025/26 season

Newcastle United have expressed regret after including an image in their latest promotional content that sparked concerns of cultural insensitivity. The issue arose from a video unveiling their new third kit, produced in collaboration with Adidas, which inadvertently featured a flag resembling a controversial historical symbol.

In one scene, supporters could be seen raising a stylised version of the Rising Sun Flag, an emblem tied to the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. While the flag holds cultural value in Japan, many neighbouring nations such as South Korea, China, Singapore, and Russia associate it with a painful past involving military aggression and wartime atrocities.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

International sporting organisations have also acknowledged the controversy surrounding the flag. FIFA currently prohibits its display during international fixtures. Additionally, during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, South Korea urged the IOC to ban the symbol entirely, though Olympic organisers defended its use, saying it was not intended as a political gesture.

  • WHAT NEWCASTLE SAID

In a statement addressing the matter, Newcastle United said, "We have been alerted to the appearance of a flag in our recent third kit launch video that could inadvertently cause offence. In response, we immediately removed the video from circulation and have taken steps to edit the visual from all future content. We sincerely apologise for any offence caused".

Adidas, the club’s kit supplier, echoed Newcastle’s actions by also removing the initial video from their platforms.

"The reaction to our new third kit with Adidas has been special, but the launch video contained a scene that could inadvertently cause offence," a statement read.

"We apologise for that. We’ve removed the scene from the film to make sure that as many fans as possible can enjoy it."

    WHAT NEXT FOR NEWCASTLE?

The controversy is especially delicate given Newcastle’s upcoming schedule. The club is set to embark on a pre-season tour that includes stops in both Singapore and South Korea, two nations that have historically objected to the use of the Rising Sun imagery. However, as Newcastle gear up for an ambitious 2025/26 campaign, they will hope the conversation shifts back to football and their performances on the pitch.

Teja Nidamanuru hopes World Cup success paves way for more bilaterals and Euro T20 league

Teja Nidamanuru, the Netherlands batter, has embraced the challenges that come with playing Associate cricket, but he hopes that Netherlands’ recent success at World Cups will earn them more bilateral fixtures against Full-Member nations. After toppling South Africa in the T20 World Cup in Adelaide last year, Netherlands completed the double over them with a win at this World Cup in Dharamsala. However, after the end of this tournament, their immediate ODI future is uncertain – their next international assignment will likely be the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean.”Yeah, look, I think as many of you that are sitting here are aware [about] the challenges of ‘Associate cricket’ – the word that we don’t like to use, actually – but the reality of it is that there is less funding and there is less sort of opportunity and there is less exposure,” Nidamanuru said on the eve of Netherlands’ day game against Sri Lanka in Lucknow.Related

“Look, we’re here to compete and we have an aim, we have an aspiration to try and play in the semi-finals and that could change stuff and we could get more bilateral series that way. So, the better we perform here and obviously showcase our skills, it will stand us in good stead going forward – that is our belief.”We’re not really thinking too far afterwards, but obviously everyone’s aware of the challenges in Associate cricket regarding the funding or the facilities or the lack of exposure in terms of playing the bigger teams. So, when you do come up against them, you’re like, okay, well, we’ve really got to rise to the occasion. But if we were playing [top teams as often as] the other teams do, I’m sure that [we] would be up to par in terms of how it goes. So, if you say, hey, we play someone like New Zealand 10 times, I’m sure we’d be able to win at least four or five games out of that.”Nidamanuru also believes that Netherlands’ players are also “not too far away” from featuring in a T20 league of their own and, he hopes, their performances in this tournament goes a way in helping that along. The inaugural Euro T20 Slam, which was supposed to take place in 2019, was cancelled after it ran into financial difficulties and then Covid-19 hit.Fast bowler Paul van Meekeren is one of the Netherlands players with some experience on the T20 circuit. In 2021, he had won the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with St Kitts & Nevis Patriots under Dwayne Bravo’s captaincy. He was the first-ever Dutch player to be picked in the CPL and has also featured in the Global T20 Canada. Roelof van der Merwe is a more familiar name on the franchise circuit, having also played in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Delhi franchise, but that was before he had represented Netherlands.”Look, I think we tried to get the Euro Slam off the ground a few years ago, but for Covid and some other challenges and I think, also funding or whatever it may be, it didn’t quite go through,” Nidamunnuru said. “But basically, that was encompassing Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands, and there were a few players, also marquee players, that were sort of advertised through there.”Look, I think it would be great for us and I don’t think we’re too far away. We’re hoping obviously being on the world stage and performing the way we are, we can attract leagues or people to start a franchise or do something in that sort of triangle over there, which would be really, really awesome.”Netherlands’ immediate focus will be on finding a way past Sri Lanka’s spin attack though they will be depleted by Wanindu Hasaranga’s injury-enforced absence this time. In the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe earlier this year, Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana had dominated Netherlands’ batting line-up with their bagful of variations. Netherlands’ batters have since worked on their game against spin during their pre-tournament camp in Alur in Karnataka.”Yeah, look, obviously, they’ve got quality spinners, Sri Lanka, they always have,” Nidamanuru said. “They’ve always produced great quality spin bowlers, so whoever they have in their team, they’ll still be a threat. I think it’s just about us being able to manage what is in our control really well and if we can do that, I’m sure we can execute and you know it’s a game that, yeah, we see as there’s an opportunity obviously for both teams. So yeah, we enter into it with a very positive frame of mind whether we’re playing spin or pace.”
