Bryce is right for Blaze as Sparks fall short

Allrounder Kathryn Bryce played the starring role as The Blaze maintained their 100% cent record with a fourth win from four in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, defeating Central Sparks by 10 runs at Trent Bridge.Bryce top-scored with 57 for out of 134 for 6 for The Blaze, sharing partnerships of 55 with sister Sarah and 40 with South African allrounder Nadine de Klerk, with Sparks seamer Emily Arlott taking 2 for 23.She then took 2 for 28 with her medium pace, with Blaze skipper Kirstie Gordon taking 2 for 22 as Sparks fell short despite the efforts of Katie George, captain Eve Jones and Courtney Webb in reply.Invited to bat on a cloudy afternoon, The Blaze lost both openers in the powerplay. England’s Tammy Beaumont, having helped Arlott’s loosener round the corner for a first-ball boundary, promptly miscued to midwicket. Teresa Graves hit Grace Potts to extra cover, where Eve Jones took a fine one-handed grab.Kathryn Bryce had an escape on 17 when she was put down at midwicket as she and Sarah plundered 55 in 44 deliveries before Sarah holed out to deep midwicket, leaving The Blaze 71 for 3 in the 11th.The Scotland skipper reached the half-century milestone for the second time in as many matches when she paddle-scooped George for her eighth boundary from 44 balls, following up by sweeping Baker for her ninth but was leg before trying to give the same treatment to the next delivery.De Klerk’s run-a-ball 19 ended with a second catch for Jones at extra cover. Arlott limited Marie Kelly’s contribution to a single but Ella Claridge and Josie Groves added potentially valuable late runs.Needing 6.75 per over, Sparks were behind the clock and three wickets down after their batting powerplay. They had lost Chloe Brewer to a fine catch by substitute fielder Michaela Kirk at deep midwicket, Davina Perrin to a tame return catch and Abbey Freeborn leg before to be 20 for 3.Jones, reprieved on 9 after walking on a caught-and-bowled by offspinner Lucy Higham that umpires Amy Clark and Anthony Harris ruled did not carry, was joined by Webb and by reaching the halfway point with no further losses the pair kept their side at least in contention. But that changed in the course of two tight overs as Sparks captain holed out to long-on off legspinner Josie Groves and Webb was caught by keeper Sarah Bryce off a steepling top edge off Higham, pushing the required rate up to nine, Pavely falling to a superb catch at midwicket by Ella Claridge as the last 30 deliveries began with 46 needed.Arlott hit two boundaries but was bowled by Bryce, leaving 20 needed off the last over, which despite the efforts of George proved too much.

Elwiss, Kemp provide fireworks as Vipers outgun Sunrisers

Record partnership helps reigning champions to comfortable victory

ECB Reporters Network24-May-2024England past Georgia Elwiss and future Freya Kemp recorded their highest Charlotte Edwards Cup scores as holders Southern Vipers comfortably beat Sunrisers by 19 runs.Elwiss and Kemp put on an unbroken 110-run stand – a Vipers record for any wicket – with 73 and 55 respectively to set Sunrisers an imposing target of 172. Mady Villiers and Jo Gardner – who bagged her maiden CEC half-century – put on 75 to give Sunrisers hope but Vipers’ attack squeezed and secured them their first victory of the campaign – as they aim for a three-peat.Charli Knott got Vipers off to a flier after they were stuck in, with three boundaries in the first over as she took the aggressor role in the early stages. It proved her downfall as with the penultimate ball of the powerplay she was sublimely caught by Cordelia Griffith at cover, with Vipers ending the first six overs on 47 for 1.Spin duo Jodi Grewcock and Mady Villiers stemmed the tide with their first four overs only conceding 17 runs. But it was Nicola Hancock who reaped the rewards of the pressure, as her reintroduction found Georgia Adams splicing to mid-off.Throughout the spells of profligacy and struggle, Elwiss had kept the scoreboard ticking along and was compensated with a 43-ball half-century – her first in the Charlotte Edwards Cup.With a platform of 105 for 2 and wickets in the shed, Elwiss and Kemp went ballistic to get Vipers above par – with 66 runs coming from the last five overs.Kemp scored all but two of her runs either on the leg side or straight, as she prioritised power – summed up by hitting all three sixes of the innings – to strike her second Vipers fifty, and first in T20s. She ended up with 55 off 35 balls, placing a full stop with a last-ball maximum, while the experienced Elwiss returned with a 57-ball 73, having gone at a run-a-ball for much of the innings.Their 110 beat Danni Wyatt and Maia Bouchier’s 108 in last year’s Eliminator as Vipers’ best alliance and slots in as the CEC’s all-time seventh-highest.In reply, it took just two balls for Freya Davies to breakthrough as Knott stuck out her right hand to catch high above her head at cover to dismiss Amara Carr. Griffith was bowled through the gate by Linsey Smith in the following over, but Gardner and Villiers countered against Adams and Smith to reach 46 for 2 by the end of the powerplay.Gardner play the role of anchor – albeit with a life on 25 – which allowed Villiers to free her arms, stride past her previous CEC best of 36 but fall six short of fifty as she was stumped off Knott. It ended a 75-run stand and swung the momentum to the visitors and while Gardner reached her first CEC fifty, in 47 deliveries, the run-rate was always slightly out of reach.Lissy Macleod and Hancock holed out in successive Mary Taylor balls before Davies and Adams saw out the last two overs, despite some late Gardner power-hitting after the game had gone.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has ruled out Lionel Messi for the team’s Florida Derby match against Orlando City SC, saying he doesn’t want to risk the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“Leo will not be available tomorrow. He’s fine, but obviously it would be crazy to risk taking him to Orlando with everything we have ahead of us,” he said.

The manager expressed optimism for a quick return.

“We’re optimistic he’ll be back with us soon.”

Messi was forced off just seven minutes into last Saturday’s Leagues Cup match against Necaxa after colliding with two players from the Mexican side, which left him unable to continue.

    WHAT JAVIER MASCHERANO SAID

Despite Messi's absence, Miami have had continued success due to the arrival of fellow Argentina international Rodrigo De Paul. Mascherano pointed to his impact as a difference maker.

“It’s important that he can contribute with goals. Both he, Tadeo, and Telasco have been putting up very good numbers," he said.

Regarding their upcoming Leagues Cup quarterfinal clash with Tigres, the Argentine coach noted, “Tigres is a great team. They showed it last night against Puebla [a 7–0 win]. They’re a team that always competes for big things.”

LSG's playoff hopes all but gone as Capitals sign off with win

Both teams will have to depend on other results to go their way if they hope to finish in the top four

Srinidhi Ramanujam14-May-20241:47

Jaffer: Disappointed with Rahul’s captaincy this season

Delhi Capitals signed off the league stage with a 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants in Delhi, and kept themselves in contention for a top-four finish, even if only mathematically. LSG, with one more game left against Mumbai Indians, aren’t out of the running either, but both teams will have to depend on other results to go their way if they are to make the top four. From 44 for 4 in a chase of 209, LSG took the contest to the last over thanks to Nicholas Pooran’s 61 and Arshad Khan’s unbeaten 58 from No.8 . However, Rasikh Salam defended 22 off the final over to hand DC their seventh victory of IPL 2024.On a high-scoring surface, DC had to post 200 or above to have a shot at collecting two points. After being asked to bat, Abishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs shone with fifties to power DC to 208 for 4. With the ball, Ishant Sharma ripped through LSG early on with three wickets and even though Pooran and Arshad tried their best, LSG kept losing wickets at the other end and eventually fell short.Hope and Porel’s powerplayDC lost their aggressive opener Jake Fraser-McGurk in the first over when he was caught at long-on off the left-arm quick Arshad. But Porel and Shai Hope didn’t let the wicket slow them down. After smashing six off Mohsin Khan, Porel pummeled three fours and a six in Arshad’s second over. In the following over, Hope targeted Yudhvir Singh and hit 4,4, and 6. By the end of four overs, DC had raced to 51 for 1. The duo didn’t spare Naveen-ul-Haq either as he ended up conceding 17 runs off his first over. DC ended the powerplay on 73 for 1, with Porel batting on 43 off 16.The middle-overs slowdownPorel raced to his fifty in 21 balls but hit only eight runs off his next 12 balls, thanks to LSG’s spinners who exerted pressure in the middle overs. Rahul brought in Ravi Bishnoi immediately after the powerplay and bowled Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda from the other end. Bishnoi broke the 92-run second-wicket stand between Porel and Hope in the ninth over, when Hope thrashed a full-length wide delivery straight to cover, where Rahul took a stunning low catch to dismiss him for a 27-ball 38. After only 17 came off the next 15 balls, Porel fell to Naveen’s slower ball, trying to go big. Bishnoi finished with 1 for 26 from his four overs, as DC accumulated just 42 runs from overs 7 to 12.The Delhi Capitals players make their feelings clear after getting Nicholas Pooran out•BCCI

Stubbs blitz lifts DCAfter 15 overs, DC were 136 for 3 and the 200 mark looked far away. But they still had Stubbs. After scoring seven off his first nine deliveries, he took off, first smashing Arshad for two fours and a six in the 16th over and then Naveen for two sixes and a four in the 19th to get to his fifty in 22 balls. His unbeaten 57 off 25, and a quickfire 33 from Rishabh Pant, lifted DC to 208 for 4, with 72 runs coming off the final five overs.Ishant rips through LSGIshant, the Impact Player, made an impact straightaway, removing three big guns – Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda – in his first three overs. Axar Patel’s dismissal of Marcus Stoinis – stumped by Pant – meant LSG were reeling at 44 for 4 in no time.Pooran’s counter-attacking fiftyDespite the early blows, LSG were still in the game thanks to Pooran’s big hitting. He hit Axar for 4, 6, 4, 6 just after the left-arm spinner had removed Stoinis off his first ball. He went on to smash four more fours and two more sixes after that over – this included a reverse-sweep over extra cover for a six off Kuldeep Yadav. At the halfway stage, LSG were 97 for 5. Pooran, however, fell to Mukesh Kumar’s slower short ball, angled away from his hitting arc, slicing it to Axar at extra cover to depart for a 27-ball 61. At 101 for 6, it seemed like LSG had lost control of the chase.Arshad goes bang, bangThere was more entertainment when Arshad came out all guns blazing. Striking at 175.5, the left-hand batter muscled five sixes and three fours to keep LSG in the game till the very end. His unbeaten knock brought down the equation to 29 off the last 12. But Mukesh and Rasikh finished with two excellent overs at the death, denying him any more boundaries, and LSG fell 19 short of DC’s total.

Hayley Matthews dominates with bat and ball as WI go 2-0 up

She took three wickets and scored 58 off 43 to quell Pakistan’s challenge in Karachi

Danyal Rasool28-Apr-2024

Hayley Matthews took three wickets and completed a run-out before scoring 58 in West Indies’ chase•PCB

Another dominant all-round performance from Hayley Matthews helped West Indies women take a 2-0 series lead against Pakistan in Karachi. Muneeba Ali had scored a half-century earlier in the evening, but Matthews registered figures of 3 for 25 to stall Pakistan’s innings and keep them to a below-par total. She then doubled as match-winner with the bat, too, her 58 off 43 all but ensuring the visitors’ chase would be a straightforward one, and that Pakistan would continue to remain winless.Related

1st T20I – Ramharack stars as West Indies clinch thriller

Having missed out on chasing a near-identical score in the first T20I, Pakistan opted to bat first this time, only to see their innings fall into early peril. Gull Feroza struggled to get the ball off the square in a tortuous 29-ball 14 with Chinelle Henry in particular causing her considerable trouble. She struck to remove Sidra Ameen early, with the pressure of run-scoring falling onto Muneeba, and as a result, Pakistan limped to a mere 33 in the powerplay.Muneeba injected some impetus into the innings, but her 47-ball 55 was the only Pakistan effort that went at better than a run a ball. An encouraging third-wicket partnership with Nida Dar was felled at a crucial moment in the 16th over, just as Pakistan may have felt they had the platform to launch at the death. A masterful final over by Matthews saw three wickets fall and just five runs scored as Pakistan’s effort ended tamely, the home side hobbling to 121 on a pitch that looked like it offered significantly more.Muneeba Ali was the only Pakistan batter to strike at better than a run a ball•PCB

Matthews aside, though, West Indies never really managed to get on top of the Pakistan bowlers either. The visitors did get off to a fast start, flying to 38 in the first five, but it was something of a one-woman show, with Matthews striking all five of West Indies’ boundaries in this time. When the spin trio of Nashra Sandhu, Tuba Hassan and Nida Dar came on, Pakistan briefly regained some control, with West Indies reduced to scoring at just over six an over for the next six overs. But it was wickets Pakistan needed, and West Indies were never required to take the risks that gave them a glimpse. By the time Sadia Iqbal prised Matthews out, West Indies needed just 34 to win, and had more than seven overs to do it in. When Shemaine Campbelle was cleaned up by Tuba, there may have been the faintest glimmer of hope for the home side, but the visitors were much too clinical, and had run Pakistan out of road by then. When Chedean Nation sealed the win with a boundary, both sides were going through the motions, and there was a sense of a formality being completed. The third of five T20Is is on 30 April in Karachi, with a win for West Indies guaranteeing a series victory.
