Ollie Robinson aiming to be 'worthy' successor to Broad and Anderson

On the day James Anderson and Stuart Broad took their tandem wicket tally to 1,001, level with the great Australia duo of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne, it was Ollie Robinson who ensured England retained their advantage in the first Test against New Zealand.Robinson is far from off-broadway, already on equal billing with two active legends as he showcased with 4 for 51 on day two at Bay Oval. It was a haul that takes him to 64 dismissals after just 28 innings, keeping his average under 20 (19.60) in his 16th Test. And more importantly, his efforts kept New Zealand behind after their first innings before England were able to extend their lead from 19 to 98 by stumps. It is clear Anderson and Broad see something special in Robinson. Beyond making their jobs a little easier, the speed with which he has become ingrained into their company and conversations speaks of a recognition that he is on their level. As such, Robinson carries the air of the anointed one, assume the roles of Anderson and Broad once they are done combining or adding to their individual tallies which sit at 679 and 567 wickets, respectively. And it speaks of his confidence in his ability that he is not daunted by the idea of inheriting their mantles.”They’ve been very open and honest with me since I’ve come into the environment, which has been amazing for me. Hopefully I can be a worthy bearer of the baton, if you like.”Robinson gets up close and personal with Daryl Mitchell•Phil Walter/Getty Images

The 29-year-old made inroads at crucial times: Tom Latham under lights on the first day after England declared on 325 for 9 before following up with Daryl Mitchell and lower-order hitters Scott Kuggeleijn and Tim Southee. Ever since his first cap at the start of the 2021 summer – against New Zealand, no less – he has earned a reputation of dismissing key batters, something which Brendon McCullum has urged him to carry forward.”Baz is always saying to me try and be that partnership-breaker,” he said. “When the game’s drifting along, try and be that guy to break the partnership so it was important for me to do that and kept the game in our favour.”The removal of Mitchell was the icing on the cake for a couple of reasons. Back in 2022, Mitchell averaged 107.60 in England thanks to hundreds in each of the three Tests. Here, he was sent on his way with a 10-ball duck – the first of his Test career – leaving a ball that jagged in and clipped him on the front pad. Mitchell opted against a review and replays showed a predicted impact right into the top of off stump. Since Robinson’s debut, he has dismissed seven batters through misjudged leaves on their part, more than any other bowler in the world.”It’s the one I’m trying to bowl, yeah,” he says of the ball that nips back into the right-hander off the straight. “It doesn’t always move. I learnt it off Jimmy a little bit, tilting the seam slightly differently to how you would hold a conventional outswinger. It’s a bit of luck though, really. I’m just trying to get any seam movement that I can, bowl some more wobbles and go from there really.”I’m trying to present it as an outswinger and get it to wobble back in or hold. I’ve naturally always brought the ball back in, I think I’ve just grown with it a little bit, got more accurate with it and more skilful with it.”Related

As he says, it is a trick he has had in his armoury for some time, undoing batters in the County Championship while playing for Sussex long before the high profile occurrences, notably castling Pakistan’s Babar Azam in Multan in December. That he was able to translate that from the red to a less willing pink ball is a testament to his talent. There is, however, a new edge to it which he credits to England’s new four-figure double act.”I think a big thing for me is use of the crease that I’ve learnt from Jimmy and Broady, probably more than anything coming to England,” Robinson said. “In county cricket you sort of run up and bowl from mid-crease – it’s quite generic – whereas in international cricket, the batters are that much better you have to be more on it and use the crease and use your skills to get more out of it.”

Dan Lawrence has been appointed captain of London Spirit men in the Hundred, replacing the retired Eoin Morgan in the role.Lawrence, 25, has never captained a team in a professional T20 fixture and his leadership experience extends to one Championship match for Essex and a warm-up match for England Lions in Abu Dhabi earlier this winter. He has played nine times for the Spirit across the first two seasons of the Hundred, scoring 135 runs and taking five wickets – four of them in a single fixture against Welsh Fire at Lord’s last summer.Related

He was retained for the 2023 season on a £75,000 contract, and will receive a £10,000 bonus as captain.”It’s a real honour to be asked to captain this side,” Lawrence said. “Following on from England’s greatest white-ball captain is a huge challenge, but one I’m really excited to be taking on.”Spirit’s men finished third in the Hundred last summer, losing the eliminator against Manchester Originals at the Ageas Bowl. They have retained most of their squad and will make three signings in Thursday evening’s draft, including one overseas player.”We’ve got a talented group of players coming back this season, and it’s a great chance to build on last year’s strong performance,” Lawrence added. “I can’t wait to lead the team out in front of a packed ground at Lord’s.”Dan Lawrence celebrates a wicket with Eoin Morgan•ECB/Getty Images

Fraser Stewart, Spirit’s general manager, said: “We are delighted that Dan has agreed to captain London Spirit’s men’s team this year. He is tactically astute and is a very popular and respected member of the dressing room.”It’s also pleasing that he’s a local player from one of our partner counties, Essex, whose fans we hope will come to Lord’s to support Dan and the London Spirit teams.”The Hundred runs from August 1-27 this summer, and has a standalone window which does not clash with any England international fixtures – men’s or women’s – for the first time.

Givairo Read salary: How much does Feyenoord wonderkid earn per week and annually in Eredivisie?

Everything you need to know about Givairo Read's salary details playing for Feyenoord

Dutch sensation Givairo Read has shown immense promise playing at right-back for Feyenoord, particularly during the 2024–25 season. An academy product of Volendam, Read joined Feyenoord in 2023, rejecting a contract extension with his former club.

He made an instant impression in Feyenoord’s youth setup, winning the Academy Player of the Month award in his very first month at the club.

Read made his official first-team debut for Feyenoord in 2024 and has since grown into an important figure at the right-back position. With injuries to Bart Nieuwkoop and Jordan Lotomba, Read has become Feyenoord’s first-choice right-back, logging significant minutes throughout the 2024–25 campaign.

His current contract with the club runs until 2029, and although his salary is modest compared to other senior players, his age and consistent performances suggest a pay raise is likely in the near future.

So, exactly how much does he earn right now?

Ben Stokes vows to leave IPL early in order to prepare for Ireland Test and Ashes

Captain hopeful of playing unchanged XI but Robinson reports soreness in knee

Vithushan Ehantharajah22-Feb-2023Ben Stokes has confirmed he will cut short his IPL commitments to ensure he is primed and ready for the 2023 Test summer.Stokes was picked up by Chennai Super Kings for £1.6m in December’s auction for the upcoming season, and spoke during England’s recent series with Pakistan of his desire to commit to the competition after missing last year’s edition. However the IPL schedule, announced last Friday, confirmed the final will take place on May 28, just four days before England’s first Test of the summer against Ireland at Lord’s (June 1) which leads into a five-match Ashes series. It is normal for players, particularly those with central contracts, to miss the latter stages of the IPL given the infringement on the start of the international summer in England. However, the more relaxed approach taken by director of men’s cricket Rob Key and Test coach Brendon McCullum has recently seen the ECB work with players when it comes to fixture clashes between international and T20 tournaments, most notably with a number of players turning down England’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh to fulfill their Pakistan Super League contracts. As Test captain, Stokes has led his side to 10 wins in 11 matches since taking over full-time, a record that might have earned him the right to play the whole competition and drop in for the first Test at Lord’s, as Trent Boult did for New Zealand last year. Instead, he has decided the best thing would be to return early.”Yes, I’ll play,” Stokes answered when asked if he will play the Ireland Test. “I’ll be making sure that I give myself enough time to get back and play that [Ireland] game.”How many follow his lead remains to be seen. There are currently eight other Test players – active or available – set to play in the IPL, of which six are on full-time contracts (Joe Root, Mark Wood, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Jofra Archer, Sam Curran), with Harry Brook on an incremental deal. While the ECB could enforce a date for them to return, Stokes says he will discuss what they need to be ready for the Ashes, leaving the door open for some to miss the Ireland Test if they’d prefer.Related

“I’ll probably get round the individuals and ask them what they want to be ready for for the Ashes, because those five games are obviously the big ones of the summer, and you’ve got to think about what lads want. But what if something was to happen in that game [Ireland] and we lose someone for the Ashes … It’s just one of those where you have to weigh up the options of what the individual person actually wants out of that week, versus do we really need to play that one. Because, obviously, I’m right in saying that series is bigger than that game against Ireland.”Speaking in Wellington ahead of the second Test at the Basin Reserve, Stokes confirmed he would ideally like to go in with an unchanged XI. However there are question marks over whether he will be able to do that with seamers James Anderson, Ollie Robinson and Stuart Broad being monitored after the 267-run win at Mount Maunganui.Robinson is the one most likely to rest after suffering discomfort below his left knee on day three. The options to replace him, if it is felt he cannot make it through the Test, are Matthew Potts, who offers a similar unerring accuracy, or the extra pace of Olly Stone.”If we have got a couple of people who are a bit sore, or bowlers who don’t feel like they are 100 percent right to go, then I will still be picking my best team because I will be picking the XI who are able to play,” Stokes said. “So it’s the beauty of the squad we’ve got at the moment – if someone doesn’t feel like they’re quite up to performing again after a close turnaround, we’ll still be able to pick the best team judging by the people we’ve got.”

Getty/GOALWHAT EFL PUNDIT SAID

Former EFL player turned pundit Lee Hendrie has told of the transfer gossip that Wrexham continue to generate: “I think Tom Cairney still offers an awful lot. I’ve always thought he's a fantastic player and still is a fantastic player. He probably hasn't had as much game time as he would have liked this season.

“I know Wrexham are certainly on the up and things are going well for them and there's a big platform for him to go and play at, but I still think that he can offer Premier League football, I really do, even if it's one of the teams that are coming up.

“Whether that sort of fee entices him, that’s probably down to Tom himself. But I still think that, personally, Tom's better than Wrexham, and that's no disrespect to Wrexham. I think that they'll be trying to entice players like that. But I still think Tom Cairney can still deliver, I still think he offers an awful lot.”

Nottinghamshire have signed Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi for their 2023 Vitality Blast campaign. Afridi will join Colin Munro as one of the club’s two T20 overseas players.Last season, Nottinghamshire missed out on qualification for the knockout stages of the Blast for the first time since 2015, and head coach, Peter Moores, hailed Afridi as a “box-office player” who could help reinvigorate the club, T20 champions in 2017 and 2020.”In Shaheen, we’ve got a world class player – which is really exciting – and a player with a point of difference with the ball, which is crucial when we are looking to recruit,” Moores said.”We are building from a strong platform, with a lot of very talented lads hungry to play T20, and Shaheen adds star quality and a different angle to that group. He has proven himself on big stages; he is fiercely passionate in the way he plays his cricket, and he’ll be hugely engaging for everyone to watch for that reason.Related

“We want to bounce back from last year’s campaign, and this signing invigorates the club; he makes impacts in big games, and is a box office player. Alongside Munro, who is one of the top run-scorers in the history of the format, we’ve got two very unique talents, both of whom will play a big role for us as we look to bring back silverware.”Afridi, 22, recently captained Lahore Qalandars to the second of back-to-back PSL titles. He has had previous spells in county cricket with Middlesex and Hampshire, and was signed last week by Welsh Fire to appear in the Hundred.”Notts play an aggressive brand of cricket, which suits me well,” Afridi said. “They’ve had great success in recent years and the likes of Alex Hales, Colin Munro and Joe Clarke are players I have faced up against in recent years and been impressed by.”The goal is obviously to influence games to make the team as successful as possible. Having played at Trent Bridge, I know it is a fast-scoring ground and as a bowler you need to get your line and lengths right, but you also get the rewards when you do that.”It’s definitely an exciting move for me, and one I’m looking forward to.”

Jaiswal 213, Abhimanyu 154 flatten Madhya Pradesh on first day

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Abhimanyu Easwaran put on a massive stand of 371 for the second wicket to flatten last season’s Ranji Trophy champions Madhya Pradesh on the first day of the Irani Cup in Gwalior. Jaiswal smashed his third first-class double-century studded with 30 fours and three sixes whereas Abhimanyu scored his fourth 150-plus knock of the season to punish MP on a pitch that had nothing for the bowlers once the ball got old.The early wicket of RoI captain Mayank Agarwal, who edged Avesh Khan behind for 2 in the third over, was the only moment to celebrate for MP. Once Jaiswal and Abhimanyu got together, they went after the bowlers as the day progressed to score at 3.84 an over in the first session, 4.25 in the second and 5.15 in the third.Jaiswal was uncharacteristically slower compared to Abhimanyu until the tea break as the Bengal batter turned his form around after low scores in the Ranji Trophy semi-finals and final. He started off by driving and flicking the quick bowlers whereas Jaiswal attacked offspinner Saransh Jain by coming down the pitch often to collect boundaries. In the same over as Abhimanyu got to his fifty, Jaiswal smashed Jain over wide long-on for a six in a 15-run over.Abhimanyu was the first to reach the century, with a heave over wide long-on for six off Jain and soon Jaiswal crunched Kumar Kartikeya for four through the covers for his own hundred. The two batters were on nearly identical scores at the tea break, and that’s when Jaiswal cut loose. He struck three consecutive boundaries off Ankit Kushwah by driving him down the ground twice and pulling him to the midwicket region with a crunching sound, that took him to 150 and the team past 300. Jaiswal was also blessed with two lives – on 176 and 181 – when he was dropped at first slip off Avesh and Shubham Sharma. He then ramped Avesh for four and late cut Shubham to let out a roar for his double-hundred, racing from 100 to 200 in 73 balls; Abhimanyu in the same time had only gone from 118 to 142. He reached 150 with a sweep but was troubled by cramps immediately.MP finally removed the set batters in consecutive balls when Avesh knocked over Jaiswal’s middle stump with the second new ball and Abhimanyu was run out when nightwatcher Saurabh Kumar called for a run on his first ball but Abhimanyu couldn’t make it at the keeper’s end despite a dive. The day ended three overs short of 90 despite taking the extra half hour.

PCB might postpone West Indies series in 2024 to avoid clash with PSL

The PCB is weighing up options to postpone the home series against West Indies, slated for February and March in 2024, which is clashing with the next edition of PSL. The PCB has also requested the Emirates Cricket Board to pull back their ILT20 league by ten days to avoid overlappingPakistan, according to ICC’s FTP, are scheduled to host West Indies for two Tests and three T20Is early next year, which has also been the window for conducting the PSL since 2016. In the last PSL governing council meeting, it was affirmed that the PCB can “sacrifice” the home series. The board has opened up discussions with several stakeholders now in a bid to have a clear window for the next PSL.If the PCB conducts the West Indies series after Ramzan, which is after the second week of April, they could face another challenge. With the IPL scheduled for April-May, several West Indies players might be unavailable for the bilateral series in Pakistan. The PCB hasn’t said anything on when the series could be rescheduled but there were discussions on the possibility of playing the home series during the month of Ramadan – March to April. However, playing Tests during that month will pose serious challenges with players observing fasting. That said, the PCB had conducted a limited-overs series against New Zealand during the month of Ramadan this year, where the five-match T20I series was played at night and the five ODIs were conducted post-Ramzan.Related

Somerset roar back through Henry six-for, Bartlett ton

Nottinghamshire let first-day dominance slip with collapse on second morning

George Bartlett roars in celebration as he brings up his hundred•Getty Images

Matt Henry’s six-wicket haul and an eighth first class century from George Bartlett saw Somerset storm back on the second day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Nottinghamshire at Taunton.New Zealand seamer Henry transformed the game with a superb seven-over spell from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End at the start of the morning session, which saw him take 4 for 26 as the visitors collapsed from an overnight 145 for 4 to 186 all out.Having taken two wickets on day one, Henry finished with 6 for 59 and Notts had to be settle for a first innings lead of just 23 runs, their last six wickets falling in the space of 14.4 overs. Craig Overton claimed 2 for 46.Somerset then gained further momentum with the bat, Bartlett (109 not out) and Tom Lammonby (73) sharing a third-wicket stand of 119 as they closed on 268 for four, 245 ahead. Bartlett’s chanceless ton, occupying 203 balls and including 11 fours and a six, was reward for four hours of sustained concentration. The day had begun with Notts just 18 runs behind Somerset’s first innings total with six wickets in hand and looking to build a substantial lead.It never looked like happening from the moment visiting skipper Steven Mullaney edged a low catch to Kasey Aldridge at second slip off Overton, having added only six to his overnight score of 23.The lively Henry had already struck Ben Slater, unbeaten on 67 at the start of play, a blow on the helmet with a short ball when dismissing him for 70, Overton accepting another chance to second slip.Soon the inspired Kiwi was uprooting Brett Hutton’s middle stump before also clean bowling Matt Carter between bat and pad and having Tom Moores caught at extra cover by Tom Kohler-Cadmore.Related

Moores had edged Notts in front with a four and a pulled six off Overton, who struck back by having last man Dane Paterson caught behind. Somerset could hardly have dared hope for better as only 41 runs were added to the visitors’ overnight score. It might have been an even better morning for Somerset as they moved to 41 without loss in their second innings before Sean Dickson was pinned lbw by Paterson for 26.But on the brink of lunch Tom Abell inexplicably ran himself out for a duck, attempting a third run after Lammonby had played a delivery from Jake Ball towards the third man boundary. Joe Clarke’s throw scored a direct hit at the wicketkeeper’s end, catching Somerset’s red-faced captain well out of his ground, with the scoreboard reading 43 for 2.If Notts thought they had wrestled back the initiative, Lammonby and Bartlett had other ideas, showing just the required degree of patience to bat through the afternoon session, which saw them add 112.Lammonby had been dropped on six by Hutton at third slip off Ball, who was unlucky enough to see the left-hander spilled again on 52, this time by Carter at second slip. They were rare blemishes as Lammonby reached fifty off 88 balls, with six fours, three of them the result of sumptuous on-drives. Bartlett also hit six boundaries in a 110-ball half-century, the hundred stand occupying 32.1 overs.Tom Lammonby helped lead a Somerset fightback with the bat•Getty Images

At tea, the score was 155 for 2. With only seven added, Lammonby was bowled by offspinner Carter aiming a back-foot forcing shot through the leg side.Somerset’s lead was 139 and they needed another partnership. Bartlett and Kohler-Cadmore provided it, adding 69 for the fourth wicket without undue risk against a Notts attack sticking to their task without any great penetration.Kohler-Cadmore reined himself in to begin with and was just starting to adopt his normal aggressive approach when, on 33, he launched Ball towards the mid-wicket boundary where Haseeb Hammed took a good juggling catch, narrowly avoiding stepping on the rope. All the while, Bartlett was steadily accumulating in exactly the manner his side required. He reached his second Championship ton of the season in style, dispatching Carter over long-on for six and immediately clenching his fists in celebration.James Rew provided typically solid support in the closing overs and, with two days to go, Somerset have plenty of time to build a winning lead.
