Tom Moores swings Outlaws to victory

Unbeaten 74 combined with Lyndon James fifty ends run of three defeats

Notts Outlaws ended a run of three successive Vitality Blast defeats with a scintillating six-wicket victory at Edgbaston. The Bears piled up 206 for 7, with Tom Latham striking 69 off 39 balls and Dan Mousley 53 off 40 before a spectacular late barrage from Moeen Ali and Ed Barnard brought 57 in 20 balls. Liam Patterson-White took 3 for 37.But the Outlaws, who chased down 226 to beat the Bears at Trent Bridge a month ago, powered to 212 for 7, clinching victory when Tom Moores hit the last ball of the match for six. Moores finished on 74 not out off just 33 balls after Lyndon James struck a vital 50 off 40 and Daniel Sams 16 not out from six balls, including two sixes in a final over from which they needed 16.The Outlaws chose to field and started solidly. They removed Alex Davies, bowled by Farhan Ahmed through an attempted cut in the second over, and restricted the home side to 37 for 1 in the powerplay.Latham and Mousley then sped through the gears, however, in a partnership of 116 in 70 balls. Mousley reverse-lapped, swept and straight-drove Ahmed for sixes while Latham reached his half-century, from 29 balls, by pulling a short ball from Calvin Harrison into the crowd.Latham’s demise, when he skied Patterson-White to square leg in pursuit of his fifth six, sparked a wobble of four wickets for 22 runs in nine balls. Patterson-White removed Sam Hain, lbw, and George Garton, caught at long on, and Mousley, his tenth T20 half-century banked, slapped Dillon Pennington to extra cover. It was a spirited fightback from The Outlaws but they then ran into a late storm of sixes and fours from Moeen (34, 12) and Barnard (23 not out, 8) which lifted the total over 200.Joe Clarke dominated the start of The Outlaws’ reply, hitting 30 of the first 34 but then missed a Mousley full toss and was lbw. The spinner struck again with his seventh ball which Jack Haynes was lbw to, one that pitched on his boot. A third lbw decision terminated Freddie McCann’s counter attack of 32 off 17 when he missed a reverse-sweep at Moeen.James, starved of the strike early on, and Moores hit freely to keep the Outlaws in contention, with 60 needed from the last five overs, but the first of those overs, from the excellent Barnard, cost just five runs.Moores lifted Hasan Ali mightily over extra cover for six and followed up with four to reach a 24-ball half-century. James followed to his half-century in 39 balls but was run out by quick-thinking Hasan Ali to leave the Outlaws needing 16 off the last over, from Barnard.Sams lifted the first and fifth balls for six leaving the scores level with one ball left – and Moores thumped that one over long off for another six to complete a remarkable Outlaws double over the Bears.

Essex overcome Kalis and showers to seal 14-over showdown

MacGregor stars again with the ball in tight victory over Bears at Chelmsford

ECB Reporters Network04-Jun-2025Essex’s batters came to the party as they overcame the weather and a late Sterre Kalis blitz to beat Warwickshire by 19 runs under the Duckworth Lewis Stern method at Chelmsford in the Vitality Blast women’s competition.Issy Macleod (44), Grace Scrivens (36) and an explosive 27 from Maddie Penna lifted the hosts to 154 for 4 in a game reduced to 14 overs-a-side by rain.Kalis plundered 52 in 23 balls in reply, but her pyrotechnics came too late as Esmae MacGregor (3 for 32) and Sophia Smale (2 for 13) helped restrict the visitors to 139 for 8.Scrivens survived a huge lbw shout first ball from Issy Wong, replays suggesting the England Lions’ captain from last winter was lucky to escape the dreaded umpire’s finger. The Essex skipper made good use of the reprieve, driving and sweeping forcefully to clock up eight boundaries in quick time, At the other end Lauren Winfield-Hill’s sumptuous straight drive helped raise the 50-partnerhip in 31 balls.Charis Pavely ended the fun, luring Scrivens down the pitch to be stumped by Abi Freeborn. The batter hadn’t reached the pavilion before a cloudburst drove the players from the field. When play resumed 80 minutes later, Winfield-Hill perished caught at square leg off Millie Taylor, but Penna caught the mood launching the night’s first six over the mid-wicket stand and adding four fours in a brutal 12-ball effort.Even when she fell to Katie George’s boundary catch, Macleod smote five fours as 57 came off the last four overs.Davina Perrin, fresh from her 87 against Durham on Sunday, set the tone for the chase, pulling the first ball for four, and plundering three more boundaries from the next over bowled by Scriven. One shot too many saw her hole out at mid-on off Kate Coppack, but Essex missed out on a second scalp in the powerplay when Wong, promoted up the order was reprieved on 11, a skier dropped at mid-off by Scrivens. The drop didn’t prove expensive with the England all-rounder caught soon afterwards from the bowling of the in-form MacGregor who scattered the stumps of the dangerous Laura Harris later in the same over.Sterre Kalis played the knock of the night, twice clearing the ropes as she raced to 50 with five fours and two sixes, but by the time she became one of two late wickets for Sophia Smale from the game’s penultimate ball, the cause was lost.

Dhoni's application to trademark 'Captain Cool' gets accepted

MS Dhoni’s application to trademark the phrase ‘Captain Cool’ – a moniker long associated with him because of his calm on-field demeanour – has been officially accepted and published by the Trademark Registry of India. The trademark will be granted if no objection or opposition is raised by any third party within 120 days of its acceptance, which was on June 16, 2025. The trademark was filed under categories related to sports training, coaching, and the provision of sports training facilities and services.Dhoni had filed the application in June 2023. He was informed at the time by the registry that another company, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited, had already registered the trademark ‘Captain Cool’. In response, Dhoni filed a rectification petition for the cited mark, alleging that the company was attempting to exploit his brand and the popularity of the term.In his application, Dhoni stated: “This is a case of bad faith registration on the part of the company, aimed at deceiving the public and unlawfully enriching themselves by trading on the name of a well-known individual.” Dhoni’s application was accepted after at least four hearings.Dhoni was last seen in action during IPL 2025, where he took over the Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy midway through the season after Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered an injury. CSK endured a disappointing campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table for the first time in 16 seasons.Earlier this month, Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. “It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world,” Dhoni said in a statement. “To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever.”Dhoni, who will turn 44 this July, has kept his options open with regard to returning for another IPL season.

Rounding the Bases: MLB Straight Up Picks for Every Game Today (Back the Twins Hot Offense)

We have a full slate of MLB games set to take place today to wrap up the week so as we always do on Rounding the Bases, I'm going to give you my pick for every single one.

Let's finish the week on a high note!

Dodgers vs. Tigers Prediction and PickPick: Dodgers +112

It's a bit shocking to see the Dodgers set as underdogs to the Tigers, but you can understand it when you realize Tarik Skubal (10-3, 2.37 ERA) gets the start for the Tigers. Still, I like Los Angeles as an underdog with James Paxton (7-2, 4.24 ERA) on the mound. The Dodgers have a significant offensive advantage in this battle of lefty starters. They rank second in the Majors in OPS vs. lefties at .801 while the Tigers rank 25th at .659.

Athletics vs. Phillies Prediction and PickPick: Athletics +235

I'm going to take a shot on the Athletics as significant underdogs in Philadelphia tonight. It seems crazy, but the A's offense has been respectable against left-handed pitchers this season, ranking 12th in OPS against lefties at .729. They also have Hogan Harris on the mound, who has a solid 3.22 ERA. The A's are more live in this game than the odds would seem to indicate.

Guardians vs. Rays Prediction and PickPick: Rays -144

As I've said for the past couple of days, it's time to buy low on the Rays. Their offense has been bad for the first half of the season, but they've finally started to turn things around and are now ninth in MLB in OPS over the past 30 days.

Yankees vs. Orioles Prediction and PickPick: Orioles +106

Gerrit Cole enters tonight with a 6.75 ERA through his first handful of starts this season and now he has to pitch against arguably the best offense in baseball in the Orioles. I won't hesitate to back the O's as home underdogs in this AL East battle.

Rockies vs. Mets Prediction and PickPick: Mets -240

Tanner Gordon of the Rockies allowed eight hits and five earned runs in his first start in the Majors. I won't consider betting on the Rockies when he starts for them until he proves he can succeed at the Major League level.

Marlins vs. Reds Prediction and PickPick: Reds -158

It's tough to find any reason to justify a bet on the Marlins. They're dead last in the Majors in OPS over the last 30 days at .623.

Royals vs. Red Sox Prediction and PickPick: Red Sox -102

The Royals offense got off to a hot start but has been struggling of late. They're now 26th in the Majors in OPS over the last 30 days while the Red Sox rank third over that stretch. I'll jump all over Boston in this one.

Rangers vs. Astros Prediction and PickPick: Rangers +136

Andrew Heaney is due to get a couple more wins on his record. He has a 3.80 ERA but a record of just 3-9. Keep an eye on the Rangers, they may start to get hot in the next few weeks.

Nationals vs. Brewers Prediction and PickPick: Brewers -220

In a pitching matchup between Jackson Rutledge (9.00 ERA) and Freddy Peralta (3.95 ERA), backing Peralta and the Brewers is an absolute no-brainer.

Pirates vs. White Sox Prediction and PickPick: White Sox -156

The White Sox offense may be bad, but they can win games with Garrett Crochet (3.08 ERA) on the mound. Let's also remember the Pirates are 25th in OPS over the last 30 days, only slightly better than the White Sox.

Cubs vs. Cardinals Prediction and PickPick: Cardinals -196

How is Kyle Hendricks still a part of this Cubs rotation? He has a 1-7 record and a 7.53 ERA. If you're brave enough to back him by betting on Chicago, best of luck to you. I refuse to go down that road. Give me the Cardinals as sizable home favorites.

Mariners vs. Angels Prediction and PickPick: Angels +124

My take that the Mariners are going to regress soon hasn't worked out the past few days, but I'm sticking to it. Despite scoring 11 runs last night, they're still batting just .211 over the past 30 days. I'm sticking to my guns and backing Los Angeles as a home underdog.

Blue Jays vs. Diamondbacks Prediction and PickPick: Diamondbacks -126

It's tough to back the Blue Jays with how they've found ways to lose games lately. The Diamondbacks offense has been significantly better this season and the Jays bullpen is always susceptible to blowing a lead.

Braves vs. Padres Prediction and PickPick: Padres +100

The Braves offense has been struggling of late, ranking 19th in OPS over the past 30 days. The fact Spencer Schwellenback and his 5.02 ERA gets the start for them tonight doesn't help their chances. I'll back the Padres as home underdogs.

Twins vs. Giants Prediction and PickPick: Twins -142

The Twins offense has been the best in baseball over the past month, leading the Majors in OPS over that time frame at .891. I see no reason to stop betting on them.

Premier League rule introduced in 2014 will force Sunderland star to miss Chelsea game

As they prepare to square off against Chelsea in search of a victory that could see them rise into the Premier League’s top four, Sunderland have been handed a major blow.

Le Bris delivers verdict on "really strong" Chelsea side

The Black Cats have been a joy to watch so far this season and last weekend featured yet another moment to remember for those in Wearside as they brushed past Wolverhampton Wanderers. In a game that many tipped to be a relegation six-pointer, Sunderland laid down a marker and now sit as high as seventh in the Premier League on 14 points.

One of their biggest tests now awaits, however. In search of back-to-back wins in the Premier League, Sunderland will travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea this Saturday.

The Blues just eased past Ajax in the Champions League and Regis Le Bris knows exactly how impressive Enzo Maresca’s side can be – telling reporters: It’s been a good start to the season. It shows we were consistent, flexible.

Chelsea are really strong, it’s a top four team in the Premier League. They can play 60 games, they have depth, young and dynamic. It’s a good example for us. They are well coached and have individuals who can win a game. A big test.”

Victory over one of the Premier League’s big six would be Sunderland’s biggest statement yet, especially on the road. So far this season, for all their impressive form, they’ve won just once on the road and that came against a Nottingham Forest side in crisis.

Le Bris has already found the formula to success at the Stadium of Light, but replicating that form without home comforts should see Sunderland survive with ease. If the Black Cats are looking to commence that away form this weekend, however, then they’ll have to do so without one of their key men.

Premier League rule forces Alderete out of Chelsea game

As reported by Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Sunderland will now be without Omar Alderete against Chelsea courtesy of the Premier League’s concussion protocols, which were introduced for the 2014-15 season. The rules state that once a concussion is diagnosed, players must follow a mandatory graduated return to play protocol, which is a staged program of activity that takes at least 14 days.

Saved by Mukiele: Sunderland star must be dropped after 5/10 Wolves display

Sunderland picked up another Premier League win, this time defeating Wolves.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 19, 2025

Le Bris admitted that this could also see Alderete miss the Everton game on Monday 3 November, telling reporters: “The only one [injury concern]. is Omar – he is under concussions protocols. He is having daily assessments – we’ll keep monitoring him. We will see if he can make Everton.

It’s frustrating news for Sunderland, who have quickly seen Alderete become an integral part of Le Bris’ backline since the start of the season. Without him, the Black Cats could turn towards the experienced and versatile Luke O’Nien, who’d be making his first Premier League appearance of the campaign.

The Euro XI: Man United make magic, Arsenal are still the set piece geniuses and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah scores again

GOAL US unpacks the main weekend storylines from the Premier League, La Liga and other top competitions in The Euro XI

Thanks for finally waking up, Premier League. In the takes economy of sports, it all seemed that this thing was rather boring. Arsenal, we were told, were strolling to the title. Man United are just plain bad. Liverpool are finished. All three of those things may yet be true, of course, but this weekend served up a little variety.

Arsenal are still very good, and have the upper hand early on. But United have some real fight and verve in them. Liverpool, meanwhile, remembered how to win a football match, which you'd imagine is fairly refreshing for those of a Liverpudlian persuasion.

Elsewhere on the continent, things are sort of cruising along. El Clasico last week suggested that there is a real gap between Real Madrid and Barcelona this year (Madrid issued a 2-1 battering). But the Blaugrana won this week, and got their season back on track before it could careen out of control.

And then, in Germany, there was simply some truly rude behavior from Bayern Munich, who are making a mockery of their league.

GOAL US presents The Euro XI, with 11 key observations from the weekend.AFP1Mo Salah is back

So much for being "washed." OK, Mo Salah hasn't been great for a while now. There have been some loose touches, some uncharacteristic misses, a bit of selfish play that was unlike the winger who was in with a shot of the Ballon d'Or last year.

Claiming he is "back!!!" in full might be a bit much, but he got himself on the scoresheet against Aston Villa, and looked a real menace for the first time in months, leading the way Liverpool's surprisingly comfortable 2-0 win.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport2Man United, comeback kings?

Do we exist in a universe in which Manchester United are good at football now? Ruben Amorim supposedly has three years to get it right, which is a long time in the Man United universe.

True or not, he's certainly showing that he can conjure a few performances out of this markedly imperfect team. The latest one? A 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest, complete with a cracking Amad Diallo equalizer. There might just be a team here.

Getty Images Sport3Chelsea win (very) ugly

Chelsea-Tottenham is meant to be chippy. It's one of those fixtures in the Premier League that doesn't necessarily have a geographical rivalry, nor a singular point of tension. Rather, it's just always angry. But it's usually also quite good, a truly high standard of football to match the vitriol.

Well, this one was just plain bad. Spurs and Chelsea played out a miserable contest over the weekend. Chelsea won it, and just about deserved to do so – with Moises Caicedo making a decent case for the arbitrary "best midfielder in the Premier League" title.

Getty Images Sport4Arsenal and set-piece goals strike again

How do you win if you don't have time to train? The answer, for Arsenal at least, is to squeeze every last drop of quality you can out of the controllable. Welcome to the world of set pieces, where the ugly becomes your biggest advantage. And the Gunners are the kings of it all, a nightmare to deal with from dead ball situations.

They delivered again against Burnley, scoring from one set piece and then strolling their way to a 2-0 win. Declan Rice was among the goals in a prancy midfield role – something that suits him wonderfully. But most impressive? They allowed just one shot on goal. If defense wins championships, then Arsenal have placed themself in a good spot.

Man Utd have a 17-year-old "machine" who's just as exciting as JJ Gabriel

The Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS era at Manchester United has been a rollercoaster of emotions to date.

The old regime were hardly ideal but trophies were a regular occurrence and under the new ownership, it has not been smooth sailing whatsoever.

Erik ten Hag has gone but perhaps they might have been better off sticking by the Dutchman. After all, Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford has been dire and that’s putting it politely in all honesty.

While United returned to winning ways on Saturday, defeating high-flying Sunderland 2-0, the Portuguese has not showcased the immense managerial potential that he did at Sporting CP in Lisbon.

Indeed, after 33 games, only five managers in Premier League history had achieved fewer points. This is Manchester United, not a relegation-threatened team; things need to improve.

Yet, there has been some good to come from the Amorim and Ratcliffe era. They’ve flushed out some bad eggs, put together a backroom team that looks far more organised and gone back to the days of Sir Alex Ferguson in recruiting Premier League-ready talents. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are a testament to that.

They’ve also done well to keep the current poster boy of the Carrington Academy at the club, JJ Gabriel.

How Manchester United convinced JJ Gabriel to stay

The Man United academy has been a sacred place for some time now. It might not be Barcelona’s La Masia but the Class of 92 is known the world over.

Remarkably, United have had someone from their academy in every first-team matchday squad since 1937, but that record is now in danger.

Amorim’s treatment of Kobbie Mainoo nearly saw him leave and he was the only outright Carrington graduate in the squad for the win over Sunderland. Ayden Heaven was on the bench but he is technically a graduate of Arsenal’s Hale End instead.

While it might be a few more years before we see 15-year-old JJ Gabriel making waves at first-team level, he certainly looks like the next big thing to come out of the club’s academy.

Hailed as “one of the most exciting talents in the world” by the Manchester Evening News’ Steven Railston, the teenager has been catching the eye for some time now and is already playing several years above his age group.

Perhaps the most sparkly jewel at Carrington right now, he has already found the net on seven occasions in six U18 Premier League matches this term. Yeah, he’s pretty special.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

As the MEN outline, some academy followers believe ‘he could be the best talent United’s academy has ever seen’ but there was a threat of him leaving.

Already sponsored by Nike and boasting over 200,000 followers on Instagram, Gabriel is all the hype at the moment and has subsequently attracted plenty of interest.

He was close to leaving in the summer, with talks reportedly at an advanced stage with one top European club. However, a meeting was held at Carrington in which Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, and CEO, Omar Barrada, were both present.

They told Gabriel that he could become the face of the club, a verdict that led to the youngster deciding to stay in the north west.

So, he’s got the backing of Wilcox and Barrada already but is there currently a bigger talent in the academy ranks? Quite possibly.

JJ Gabriel's biggest rival at Carrington

While Gabriel looks like one of the finest talents on the youth circuit at the moment, there is a lot of hard work to be undertaken before he gets his opportunity.

He will also need to find a way past not just Benjamin Sesko in the forthcoming years but another academy sensation by the name of Chido Obi Martin.

Obi Martin arrived from Arsenal this time last year and considering his record at youth level, it was a move that caused a bit of a stir.

After all, before Max Dowman came on the scene, he was arguably the finest talent at Hale End. He scored 32 goals in 21 official games for Arsenal’s U18s and once bagged ten goals in a 14-3 win over Liverpool U16s. It’s safe to say he knows where the net is.

Sadly for the Gunners, he didn’t see a pathway to the first-team and moved to United, where to his credit, he did receive game time last term, featuring eight times for thesenior side without scoring.

Yet, in 2025/26, Amorim hasn’t selected him in a senior matchday squad once. That’s despite scoring three goals in six Premier League 2 matches.

Chido Obi’s development may have slowed slightly throughout 2025 but this is still one of the finest strikers we’ve ever seen at youth level in this country.

In the words of scout Jacek Kulig, he’s a “goalscoring machine”. No player has scored at a quicker rate in U18 Premier League history (37 goals in 24 games) and only one player, Southampton’s Nicholas Oyekunle has scored more (38) at that level in the competition’s history.

There is a huge difference between youth and senior football. Many players have soared up through the academy and then failed to make the grade. For Obi, that will be the concern, but the fact he was playing games for United’s first team last season at the age of 17 speaks volumes.

Gabriel is attracting all of the attention right now but don’t forget about Obi Martin; he’s even more prolific than his teenage counterpart. Amorim must find space in his squad to unleash him this season.
