Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that a “crucial” Liverpool player is in discussions over a contract extension at Anfield, alongside another individual.

It is a busy and stressful situation when it comes to contracts at Liverpool currently, especially regarding the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

The legendary Reds trio appear to be three of the first names on Arne Slot’s team sheet, providing world-class quality on a weekly basis, but they are all out of contract at the end of this season.

Supporters are desperate to see all three superstars extend their stay at Anfield for many more years, even though Van Dijk and Salah are 33 and 32 respectively, and it would feel like a massive blow if even one of them left on a free transfer in the summer of 2025.

Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah aren’t the only areas of focus when it comes to new deals, however, with Jarell Quansah signing an extension on Monday. That is great news for Liverpool, with the 21-year-old a player with such a bright future in the game, and it now looks as though another player could be set to agree a new contract alongside him, too.

Taking to X, Romano reported that Ibrahima Konate is also in talks over signing a new deal at Liverpool, seen as a “crucial” part of the project under Slot.

Agreeing a contract extension for Konate is so vital, considering the 25-year-old looks like the heir to Van Dijk as the leader of the Reds’ defence, hopefully not for a few years yet, though.

While there have been some concerns over the £70,000-a-week France international’s injury-prone nature, he has looked back to his best and fittest this season, starting six of Liverpool’s seven Premier League matches, and replacing Quansah at half-time in the opening fixture away to Ipswich Town.

The fact that Konate is deemed “really appreciated” by Slot shows that he has made an instant impression on the new head coach, and staying fit could be vital to Liverpool’s chances of success this season.

At 25, the centre-back’s best years should still be ahead of him, and his combination of pace, power and character make him a player that the Reds cannot afford to lose at this point in his career.

There are less than two weeks remaining of the summer transfer window and, as things stand, it feels like Arsenal still have a lot to do.

It's not just incomings that need to be sorted out before the window closes, though, as both Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson continue to be touted for an exit, although the links for the former are far more robust at present.

The two Hale Enders have been on the team's periphery for some time now, although it does look like the club could make a significant amount of money on their sales. However, even when combined, their fees won't even come close to the valuation of one of Arteta's best signings in North London.

The latest on Nketiah and Nelson

It's been a wild couple of weeks for Nketiah, as it looked like he would be joining Roberto de Zerbi at Marseille just a week ago, only for Arsenal to turn down their final offer, which amounted to around £25m.

Since that move fell apart, Nottingham Forest have emerged as the team that look most likely to sign the Englishman, with The Athletic's David Ornstein reporting on Monday that the Gunners had also turned down their offer of around £25m including add-ons.

However, Ornstein has claimed that negotiations are ongoing between the two sides, with the Gunners sticking to their valuation of between £30m and £35m for the striker.

Now, when it comes to Nelson, things are a little less clear beyond the fact that the North Londoners are looking to sell him this summer.

At the moment, it looks like Leicester City have maintained their interest in him, but according to the Telegraph, his wages are currently proving to be a stumbling block.

If he were to be sold, it would likely be for his £20m valuation, meaning that if the Gunners were able to get exactly what they wanted for the two attackers, they would earn a cool £55m, and while that's a lot of money, it pales in comparison to the valuation of one of Arteta's best signings to date.

The signing in question is Martin Odegaard, who completed his £34m move to the club in the summer of 2021 after impressing on loan six months prior.

Since then, he has only gone from strength to strength and now, according to the CIES Football Observatory, is worth up to a staggering €117m, which converts to about £100m, or at least £45m more than the combined valuations of Nketiah and Nelson.

It's an entirely justified valuation as well because, alongside his incredible skill and ability, he's become a real leader on the pitch, earning the captain's armband just a year after signing.

Moreover, in his 154 appearances for the North Londoners, he's scored 35 goals and provided 25 assists, meaning he has averaged a goal involvement once every 2.56 games since making the move four years ago.

It's not just his output that is impressive either, as according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League, the Norwegian "wizard", as dubbed by footballer Babayele Sodade, sits in the top 1% of midfielders for shot-creating actions and touches in the opposition penalty area, the top 2% for progressive passes, the top 3% for non-penalty expected goals plus expected assists and the top 4% for actual assists and total shots, all per 90.

Ultimately, Arteta has made several brilliant signings during his time at Arsenal, but Odegaard might be his very best, and the fact that he is worth so much more than two other players combined helps prove that fact.

Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz scored a combined 51 goals between them in all competitions last season, but north London transfer chiefs want alternative options to the trio who can provide a similar injection of quality.

Arteta personally prefers Arsenal sign Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams as one option, while other star names like Wolves winger Pedro Neto have also been linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium.

There are problems in regards to a potential move for Williams as well, with reliable journalist Charles Watts saying his extortionate wage demands could prove to be a serious roadblock, despite Arsenal's admiration for him.

“Arsenal are admirers of the 21-year-old, but so are plenty of other of the top clubs across Europe and that interest is only going to increase as the tournament goes on,” Watts said.

“On paper, the release clause of around £50million for Williams looks a very appealing one, but as far as I’m aware it’s not as simple as that. You have to remember that release clauses in Spain have to be paid in full and that makes deals very expensive as clubs can’t spread the transfer fee out over the length of the contract like they usually do.

“But in Williams’ case, the wages are also understood to be a pretty significant issue. Athletic Club are big payers. They have to be to ensure they keep their team together given the unique way the club operates.

“So Williams is on good money and the word is that interested clubs have been surprised by the wages he would want to move this summer. Arsenal are good payers, but they have a wage bill that they have worked hard to get in check in recent years. So they won’t do anything stupid and undo that hard work."

Now, it appears another big-name winger, who could be an alternative to Williams and Neto, comes in the form of Barcelona star Raphinha.

The 20-year-old, who scored just eight goals across 37 appearances in all competitions for Villa last term, doesn't seem like the most obvious candidate to hand Enzo Maresca a prolific new front man to lead his Chelsea line.

Duran has also struggled with continuous injuries since arriving in the Premier League, so a move to sign the forward has been met with some criticism. TEAMtalk write that co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart appear set to take another unproven risk, and a real step backwards after previously targeting the likes of Sesko and Napoli star Victor Osimhen.

Nevertheless, talks are ongoing to bring the South American starlet to Stamford Bridge. There are even some reports from the player's homeland that Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Duran for £42 million, and are currently negotiating terms with Duran himself.

Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea remain in discussions over a deal for Duran, though, so it remains to be seen if the aforementioned bold claim gains any traction in the next few days.

Todd Boehly and the wider Chelsea recruitment team clearly see a special player in Duran, regardless of his meagre output over 2023/2024, but that isn't to say they have alternatives if a deal falls through.

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke would welcome a return to Chelsea, for instance. As well as the Englishman, Chelsea are believed to be eyeing Girona star Artem Dovbyk, who could leave for just £34 million due to the value of his release clause and finished last season as La Liga's top scorer.

There is also the possibility that Duran could make the move to west London with another attacker. That is according to journalist Graeme Bailey, who writes via X that Duran could join Chelsea as well as another forward.

Given the Villa ace is still yet to showcase real profiency and consistency in front of goal, supporters could be hoping that the Chelsea hierarchy have another ace up their sleeve in pursuit of more firepower.
