West Indies face mission impossible amid future of Test cricket debate

Big Picture

On paper this looks like the ultimate mismatch. A powerful and successful Australia side, against a West Indies team that will feature at least three debutants and only five players with previous experience in the country. It will probably play out that way, too, but that does not mean there won’t be intrigue along the way.For Australia, it’s the start of a new era following David Warner’s retirement. The solution to filling his spot took a somewhat unexpected twist when it was Steven Smith who was handed the role, having been the last person considered. He has never opened in first-class cricket, and the decision has prompted significant debate, but there would be little surprise if he makes a success of it.Related

  • After a tough year, Green returns to 'natural game' at No. 4 in Test side

  • Odds stacked against brave and talented West Indians in Australia

A byproduct is that Cameron Green is able to return to the fold at No. 4, but otherwise it’s a case of same again for the home side. The fast bowlers are all good to keep going, helped by the fact that the Pakistan Tests finished in four days although Australia were pushed harder than some expected. So to West Indies. For a myriad of reasons this is a vastly different squad to the one that toured Australia a little more than a year ago – one of the game’s many scheduling quirks meaning they are back for consecutive summers. They put up some stubborn resistance with the bat in Perth on the last trip, led by captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, but were overwhelmed in Adelaide and across the two games took just 19 of a possible 40 wickets.Kemar Roach, who famously roughed up Ricky Ponting in 2009, will need to make much more of an impact than an average of 90.62 shows he has managed in Australia before, with support from new vice-captain Alzarri Joseph. They do at least have an Australian top order to target that will be under a level of scrutiny given the changes. Most interest, and excitement, among the new names in the West Indies squad is around quick bowler Shamar Joseph, from the village of Baracara in Guyana which is only accessible by boat, who impressed on the A tour of South Africa last year and produced an encouraging performance in the warm-up match against the Cricket Australia XI. For him, and plenty of others, this tour is a chance to make a name for themselves.

In the spotlight: Cameron Green and Tagenarine Chanderpaul

Cameron Green has long been anointed Australia’s next superstar, and he showed glimpses in his first stint of Test cricket to suggest that tag was justified. But through a combination of factors, including adjusting to quickly changing between formats, a minor injury that ruled him out of the Headingley Test in the Ashes, and Mitchell Marsh’s subsequent outstanding form, he now needs to re-establish himself. No. 4 is viewed as his long-term home, although it was probably thought it would come through Smith’s retirement, not a batting order move. It will also be interesting how much Pat Cummins uses him with the ball.Tagenarine Chanderpaul made a promising start to his Test career on last season’s tour of Australia with a half-century on debut followed by a pair of 40s. The match after that he scored a double-century against Zimbabwe but things have been a bit tougher since then against South Africa and India. Alongside his captain, he will be key to blunting Australia’s strong attack and giving the inexperienced middle order a chance to bed in.

Team news: Steven Smith’s opening debut; three debuts likely for West Indies

Australia’s XI was locked in last week with the squad announcement when the new spots for Smith and Green were confirmed. Matt Renshaw and Scott Boland are the reserve players.Australia 1 Usman Khawaja, 2 Steven Smith, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Cameron Green, 5 Travis Head, 6 Mitchell Marsh 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins (capt), 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodKraigg Brathwaite confirmed that Kavem Hodge and Justin Greaves will debut in the middle order along with Shamar Joseph in the pace attack.West Indies 1 Kraigg Brathwaite, 2 Tagenarine Chanderpaul, 3 Kirk McKenzie, 4 Alick Athanaze, 5 Kavem Hodge, 6 Justin Greaves, 7 Joshua Da Silva (wk), 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Gudakesh Motie, 11 Shamar Joseph

Pitch and conditions

For the first time since 2018 it will be a day game in Adelaide. That has not changed things hugely for curator Damian Hough who is renowned for making excellent Test surfaces. He expects this one to have good pace. “We’ve had a really good lead-in with the weather being able to get some good moisture throughout the pitch,” he said. The forecast is settled throughout.

Stats and trivia

  • In the likely XIs, Australia have 689 Test caps compared to West Indies’ 235 (of which Brathwaite and Roach have 166) before the start of the game
  • Josh Hazlewood needs one wicket to reach 250 in Tests and Mitchell Starc needs five for 350
  • Marnus Labuschagne needs four runs for 4000 in Tests and Travis Head 15 for 3000

Quotes

“It’s always good here. I think it’s consistently a great balance, if you put in the right areas you feel like there’s enough there for the whole five days. But there’s also runs to be scored. It’s pretty bouncy and true so looks the same.”

Milan are willing to part ways with the youngster but seek an offer around €25m (£21m/$29m) with an obligation to buy inserted in his contract.

Madrid have a buy-back clause inserted in Jimenez's contract and could match Bournemouth's bid to prevent him escaping their grasp back this summer. Serie A clubs Roma and Como are also interested in the player but both the club's are sorting out other priorities. However, a move for Jimenez seems imminent this summer.

Giants seal first win after Mooney-Wolvaardt opening act

Openers’ 140-run stand helps Giants get off the mark after four straight defeats

Gujarat Giants 199 for 5 (Mooney 85*, Wolvaardt 76, Molineux 1-32) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 180 for 7 (Wareham 48, Gardner 2-23) by 19 runs It was fifth time lucky for Gujarat Giants who won their first match of this year’s WPL in Delhi, after four defeats in Bengaluru. The change of venue worked a charm for Giants who bucked the Chinnaswamy chasing trend by choosing to bat first and racked up the second-highest total in their WPL history thanks to their first century stand. Laura Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney put on 140 for the first wicket and though the middle order fell away, they asked Royal Challengers Bangalore to pull off the highest successful WPL chase of 200.If any team was up for the task, it was them. RCB chased down 189 against Giants last year, when Sophie Devine scored 99 from the opening berth and she looked in the mood for a repeat. Batting at No.4, Devine was at the crease two balls after the powerplay, with RCB on 42 for 2. She took them to halfway in a good position in 76 for 2 but then was bowled by left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwar to leave RCB’s middle order to finish the job.Richa Ghosh played a spirited hand with 30 off 20 balls and shared in a stand of 33 with Georgia Wareham, who scored 48 off 22, but skied an Ash Gardner full toss to Meghna Singh at cover and all but ended RCB’s hopes. The result means Giants have their first points and will enter the race for the knockouts, with three more league matches left to play.First fifties for Giants Lack of runs was the main problem for Giants after the Bengaluru leg of the competition, with no top-order partnerships of more than 50 runs (Ash Gardner and Phoebe Litchfield had a 52-run fourth-wicket stand against UP Warriorz) partnerships and no individual scores of fifty or more. They put both of those right in their first outing in Delhi. Mooney and Wolvaardt’s opening combination worked well for the second time in three matches. After posting 40 against Warriorz, they got to 50 off 27 balls in the fifth over with Wolvaardt the aggressor and Mooney the accumulator. Theirs is the only opening stand in Giants’ history that has gone past a half-century, with no fifty-plus opening stands in 2023 either. Wolvaardt went on to record the first fifty by a Giants batter this year and she did so off just 32 balls with a stunning straight drive past Ellyse Perry and their stand grew to 140 – Giants highest in their history.Laura Wolvaardt notched up 76 off just 45 balls•BCCI

Bisht – and RCB – vs Umpires Wolvaardt’s dismissal for 76 gave RCB an opportunity to get back into the innings and the two overs cost just 15 runs. But after Devine was brought back and her third over costing another 15 runs, the pressure was on the left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht. Mooney hit the first ball straight past her for four, then couldn’t get the second away. For the third, Mooney brought out a reverse-sweep and missed, prompting a loud appeal from Bisht for lbw, which was denied. RCB reviewed. Replays showed Mooney had inside-edged onto her front pad. Bisht kept the next ball full, Phoebe Litchfield tried to scoop and missed, RCB appealed again and were denied again. RCB reviewed again, only to see the ball pitching outside leg. Later, the same umpire gave Smriti Mandhana out in the chase when she missed a pull off Gardner and she reviewed the call. Replays showed the ball was hitting leg stump and Jayapal was right again. All RCB at the end Mooney’s onslaught didn’t blunt RCB’s fielding efforts and Mandhana was quick to respond when Mooney called Litchfield through for a non-existent single in the penultimate over. Her throw found Richa Ghosh in time to catch Litchfield out of her crease and run her out for 18. Giants promoted hard-hitting Gardner to No.4 and she sent the first ball she faced to Simran Bahadur at long-off to depart for a duck. Wareham conceded two wides and a single to close out the over. With Mooney off strike to start the last over, D Hemalatha stepped out of her crease to try and smack Sophie Molineux through the in-field but missed and was stumped. Four balls later, Mooney was facing again when she hit the ball to point and called Veda Krishnamurthy through for a single. Veda was never going to make her ground and became the third Giants batter to be run out. RCB closed out the innings with two overs that cost only 12 runs and brought them four wickets.Mooney gets her own back Mooney was on strike for all three Giants run-outs, and it was her calls that left her partners in tricky situations, but she made up for that when she completed a run-out in RCB’s innings. S Meghana was coming back for a second run off Meghna Singh but took on Wolvaardt’s arm and always looked in trouble. The throw came in and Mooney collected and whipped the bails off to give Giants a clear advantage just after the powerplay.Wareham mayhem at the death RCB’s hopes of a win were almost certainly out of mind when Wareham decided to have some fun. She’d just seen Ghosh dismissed, her team needed 71 off 24 balls and Tanuja Kanwar delivered a juicy full toss on offstump which she could not resist. Wareham cleared the front leg and boshed the ball over deep mid-wicket for her first six and RCB’s sixth. She hit one more, off Meghna over wide long-on, and RCB finished with eight sixes, an interesting statistic considering Giants only hit one six, but ended up on the losing side.

Wilson fifty hands Storm much-needed victory over Sunrisers

Fran Wilson scored a blistering 56 to propel Western Storm to a much-needed six-run victory over Sunrisers in a rain-shortened Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy contest at Cheltenham.Alex Griffiths made 46 and Niamh Holland a quickfire 28 as the home side ran up a useful total of 165 for 3 after being put into bat in a match reduced to 22 overs a side.Grace Scrivens and Dane van Niekerk did their best to make a game of it, scoring 39 and 26 respectively to give the chase early impetus. But off spinner Chloe Skelton removed both in the space of two overs to strike a double blow from which Sunrisers were unable to recover.Skelton finished with 3 for 36 and fellow spinner Sophia Smale took 4 for 34 as Sunrisers came up short on 159 for 8, Storm registering their first win in the 50-over format since May to move off the foot of the table.Storm openers Dani Gibson and Griffiths did their best to utilise a reduced four-over powerplay, adding 22 in 3.2 overs before the former was bowled playing across the line for 12 by Eva Gray.Momentum was maintained as new batter Wilson scored at a run-a-ball, driving Gray down the ground for four and then pulling spinner Mady Villiers for another boundary to keep the scoreboard moving. The former England World Cup winner greeted leg spinner Abtaha Maqsood with a swept four and then pulled her through midwicket as Storm passed 50 in the ninth over. Griffiths proved the perfect foil, finding the gaps and rotating the strike as the second-wicket alliance realised 50 from 45 balls.A slow outfield proved problematic for Storm and Amu Surenkumar bowled tidily to restrict scoring from the Chapel End, but Wilson swept Scrivens for four in the fourteenth over to regain the initiative for the hosts.Wilson’s aggressive approach paid dividends when she went to a 45-ball half-century in the grand manner, pulling Surenkumar for six over mid-wicket to register the first maximum of the innings.Surenkumar avenged herself in her next over, Wilson attempting to drive and edging a catch to short fine leg with the score on 113 for 2. Her forthright innings occupied 52 balls, included five fours and a six and served as a crucial mainstay in a progressive stand of 91 in 13.3 overs. In contrast, Griffiths found the boundary only once in compiling 46 from 47 balls before holing out to deep midwicket off the bowling of Surenkumar, who finished with 2 for 37 from five overs. Nevertheless, her innings proved every bit as important as that of Wilson in helping Storm achieve a competitive total.Promoted up the order, England Under-19 international Holland picked up the cudgels at the death, helping herself to four boundaries in a high-octane innings of 28 from 17 balls. Storm captain Sophie Luff weighed in with nine runs, playing her part in a lucrative unbroken stand of 32 for the third wicket.Needing to score at 7.50 an over, Sunrisers’ chase was undermined by the early loss of Cordelia Griffith, the opener smacking a short delivery from Gibson straight to backward point in the third over with the score on 10.Introduced at the Chapel End, slow left armer Smale struck with her first delivery, bowling Jodie Grewcock for one as the visitors slipped to 19-2 in the fifth. van Niekerk immediately demonstrated her attacking intent, hoisting Smale over midwicket for six and then hitting her for four through the same area, but the experienced Phoebe Graham sent down three overs with the new ball for just 10 runs to pile further pressure onto Sunrisers.Lauren Filer proved expensive, conceding 13 runs from the eighth over, to give the visitors encouragement, van Niekerk and Scrivens advancing the score to 66 for 2 at the halfway point of the innings.Chloe Skelton then struck a crucial blow, taking an instinctive return catch to dismiss the dangerous van Niekerk, at which point Sunrisers required a further 96 off 63 balls. Their task became still more difficult when Skelton had Scrivens caught at the wicket by Katie Jones in her next over.Storm missed an opportunity to further tighten the screw, Filer dropping Villers at mid-off on nine off the bowling of Skelton. Encouraged by that mishap, Gray went on the attack, raising 27 from 19 balls before hoisting Smale to deep midwicket. When Smale pinned Amara Carr lbw next ball, Sunrisers were 121 for 6 and needing to score at more than 11 an over.Villers scored 22 off 16 balls, only to hit Skelton to mid-on in the 20th over, after which Storm were able to relax.

Spurs submit £38m bid for "wonderful" Real Madrid target; now leading race

Tottenham Hotspur have now submitted an opening bid of £38m for a “wonderful” player, who is also being targeted by Real Madrid, according to reports.

Tottenham keen on midfielder with Bissouma departure expected

It appears as though Yves’ Bissouma’s time in north London could be coming to an end, with Tottenham reportedly approving plans to sell the midfielder this summer, which means Ange Postecoglou may be tasked with bringing in a replacement.

Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney has been earmarked as a potential replacement for the Mali international, with the 22-year-old valued at £20m by the Championship club, which would make him an affordable option.

Hackney is not the only relatively cheap English midfielder on the shortlist, however, with Postecoglou eager to convince Lille’s Angel Gomes to make the move to N17 on a free transfer this summer, at which point his contract with the French club expires.

There are also alternative options from within the Championship, and a report from Spain has revealed Spurs have now made the first move to sign Sunderland’s Chris Rigg by submitting a €45m (£38m) offer for the midfielder.

The Lilywhites are determined to get a deal for Rigg over the line, thus submitting a bid way over his market value, and they are now leading the race, but there is set to be stiff competition for his signature, as a number of other Premier League clubs are keen along with Real Madrid, hence the interest from the Spanish press.

The Black Cats will find it difficult to turn down such a huge offer for the 17-year-old, who is one of the most sought-after players outside the top flight, but they could also wait to see if Madrid make an approach. President Florentino Perez would love to sign the teenager, having scouted the youngster on a number of occasions this season.

"Wonderful" Rigg impressing in the Championship

Despite his age, the central midfielder has already managed to establish himself as a key player for the Black Cats, who are on course to compete for promotion to the Premier League this season.

The starlet has made 34 appearances in the second tier, during which time he’s picked up four goals and one assist, and he won the Goal of the Month award for a well-taken effort against Middlesbrough back in September.

In truth, the idea that Tottenham have submitted a £38m bid should be treated with skepticism, given that previous reports have detailed that Sunderland would be willing to sanction his departure for just £25m this summer.

However, having been lauded as “wonderful” by former manager Tony Mowbray, it is clear Rigg is a very talented young player, and it would be fantastic if Tottenham were able to win the race for his signature.

Last month, it was revealed Osimhen has a release clause of around £62m in his Napoli contract, which is set to become active in the summer, and the race for the Nigerian’s signature is now hotting up.

The Red Devils clearly hold an interest in the Galatasaray loanee, having submitted a verbal contract offer, but it appears they could be lagging behind in the transfer race, given that Premier League rivals Arsenal are said to have overtaken them.

In fact, it seems like the Gunners are making good progress in their pursuit of the 26-year-old, with a report claiming they have now agreed a £62m deal ahead of the summer, having informed Napoli they are willing to stump up the release clause.

As such, United may have to turn their attention to alternative targets, and a report from GiveMeSport has revealed they could instead pursue a move for FC Porto’s Samu Aghehowa, who may be more attainable.

Ruben Amorim is determined to sign a striker this summer, and the manager is scouring the market for potential targets, but a deal for the Porto star could prove to be very expensive.

Aghehowa has a release clause of £84m in his Porto contract, which could make it difficult for United to get a deal done, should the Portuguese side insist on receiving the full amount.

Osimhen remains Amorim’s dream target, but a move for the 20-year-old could be one to watch, should Porto be willing to accept a lower fee.

"Outstanding" Aghehowa "has everything" to become a top striker

The Spaniard is still very young, but he could be capable of going on to establish himself as a top striker, if the high praise he has received from journalist Josh Bunting is anything to go by.

The starlet has been prolific in Portugal this season, scoring 14 league goals, while also bagging six goals in nine Europa League games, which could indicate he is ready for a big move to the Premier League.

That said, it may be very difficult for United to get a deal done this summer, should Porto insist on the release clause being paid in full, considering their financial problems, which were recently outlined by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Perhaps if United manage to offload some high-earning players this summer, they may be able to dip into the transfer market, but given the severity of their financial issues, it is difficult to see them shelling out £84m on Aghehowa.
