£200k-p/w Man United Ace Slammed Amid Viral Image

A number of fans online have slammed Manchester United winger Antony after he failed to set up a teammate with a simple pass on the weekend.

What did Antony do wrong against Wolves?

The Red Devils gave their hopes of securing Champions League football a major boost on the weekend as they beat Wolves at home 2-0.

Indeed, Anthony Martial opened the scoring in the first half but it then took until the fourth minute of injury time for Alejandro Garnacho to seal the win with a second.

Wolves didn’t manage to have a single shot on target, while Man Utd had nine on target and 27 in total, showing just how dominant they were (via BBC Sport).

Speaking to the press after the game, manager Erik ten Hag seemed annoyed by his team’s inability to kill off the game sooner, saying: “We are very good in making the [opposition] goalkeeper man of the match!

“It happened today and at Brighton. We need better conversion, definitely.

“We have to match the highest standards – winning games. But I heard United don’t do it the easy way, that is in the DNA.”

And it seems Antony was perhaps the most guilty of all his players (via SofaScore) as he finished with an xG 0f 0.75, hit the woodwork and missed one big chance, all without getting his name on the scoresheet.

On top of that, he also could have helped set up Martial but unselfishly, failed to attempt the pass – as the image shared on Twitter below shows.

Although he did eventually end up getting an assist for his teammate to net the opener, supporters apparently didn’t haven’t forgiven the £200k-per-week winger for his earlier mistake.

Indeed, here are some of the more brutal comments on Twitter.

Some at least found the humour in it all…

Race in Visakhapatnam to not finish last

Match facts

Saturday, May 21, 2016
Start time 1600 local (1030 GMT)

Big Picture

As the race for the playoffs intensifies, there’s going to be a race at the bottom of the table too – for who will not finish last. Kings XI Punjab and Rising Pune Supergaints will kick off the weekend double-bonanza with their last games of the season. Both sides’ journeys have had several similarities, but there was contrast in their respective previous matches.Supergiants created a cavity in Delhi Daredevils’ chances of qualifying with a 19-run win in a rain-hit match. Ashok Dinda’s swing fetched him three wickets in a frugal spell, Adam Zampa and R Ashwin found substantial turn, and Ajinkya Rahane scored at the top, as usual. Supergiants handed an IPL debut to Deepak Chahar, and might consider giving chances to their other unused players – Ishwar Pandey, B Aparajith and Ankush Bains.Going by form, Kings XI appear weaker, and their confidence would have been dented further after being pummelled by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kings XI’s batsmen were never the incisors of their jaw and they were blunted further by almost being bowled out in a 15-over match. Bowling had been their core competence and that too took a beating in their previous two matches. Kings XI will now need more than a root canal to rise from the bottom.Apart from pride and the two points to play for, both teams can bring out their fearless and unrestrained games to ensure they don’t finish last.

Form guide

Rising Pune Supergiants WLLLW (last five matches, most recent first)
Kings XI Punjab LLWLW

In the spotlight

Adam Zampa, in his first IPL season, has chewed his way to the top 15 wicket-takers’ list despite having played just four matches. He has extracted turn, flighted the ball and hasn’t given batsmen much room. He also has the only five-for of the season; his best of 6 for 19 coming against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Zampa has 11 wickets in all at an economy rate of 6.38, and has struck every seven balls. He could prove to be dangerous against Kings XI too, who have only one frontline left-handed batsman – David Miller.Hashim Amla has batted five times in IPL 2016, but has only one substantial score. Even that 56-ball 96 was eclipsed by a solid show by the Sunrisers Hyderabad batsmen in Mohali, only five days ago. With an in-form M Vijay as his opening partner, Amla would want to end his first IPL sojourn with another strong show before heading to the West Indies for a tri-series.

Team news

After giving Chahar a chance in their previous match, Supergiants could draft in a few more of their inexperienced players, or even consider bringing back Peter Handscomb or Albie Morkel.Rising Pune Supergiants (probable): 1 Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Usman Khawaja, 3 Saurabh Tiwary/B Aparajith, 4 George Bailey, 5 Thisara Perera, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Irfan Pathan/Rajat Bhatia, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Adam Zampa, 10 Ashok Dinda 11 RP Singh/Ishant Sharma/Ishwar PandeyAs if to give competition to Supergiants’ injury list, Kings XI recently bid goodbye to Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, who are back in Australia. They could bring back Anureet Singh after KC Cariappa leaked 55 in three overs against Royal Challengers.Kings XI Punjab (probable): 1 M Vijay (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 4 Farhaan Behardien, 5 Gurkeerat Singh, 6 David Miller, 7 Kyle Abbott, 8 Axar Patel, 9 Mohit Sharma 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 Anureet Singh/KC Cariappa

Pitch and conditions

Cyclone Roanu, which is causing devastation in Sri Lanka, is hovering around the Bay of Bengal, not far from Visakhapatnam. Even though the sun is expected to come out on Saturday, rain interruptions cannot be ruled out.

Stats and trivia

  • M Vijay is only the second Kings XI captain to hit three 50-plus scores in a season after Adam Gilchrist in 2011
  • Adam Zampa’s bowling average of 7.54 is the best for any bowler to take at least 10 wickets in an IPL season

Man City: Cancelo ‘definitely’ set to leave

Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo is ‘definitely’ set to leave the club permanently, according to journalist Steve Bates.

The Lowdown: Loaned out

Cancelo made 17 appearances for Man City in the Premier League this season but was loaned out to Bayern Munich for the remainder of the season in a surprise deadline-day move.

When asked whether the full-back has a future at the club, Pep Guardiola recently claimed that a decision will be taken at the end of the season, however, one journalist believes that the manager has already made his choice.

The Latest: Set to leave?

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Bates indicated that Guardiola’s history of being ruthless with key players means that he will also allow the Portugal international to leave the club this summer. The journalist said:

“I think it’s very difficult once Guardiola lets you go out on loan. I think he’s probably made up his mind already.

“Guardiola sold Sterling, Jesus and Zinchenko last summer. They were really top, top players and doing well for him, but he let them go.

“Cancelo has obviously had disagreements with him and his form has gone. It has not been what it was, so I would suspect that Cancelo’s days at City are definitely over.”

The Verdict: Right call?

The 28-year-old was a key performer for the Sky Blues in the 2021/22 campaign, weighing in with seven assists in the Premier League, however, his form took a downward turn this season, making a very poor mistake in the loss against Liverpool at Anfield.

Since arriving at Bayern, the right-back has been lauded ‘fantastic’ by members of the media, helping himself to a goal and two assists in five Bundesliga appearances up to this point.

Given that Guardiola now has 18-year-old Rico Lewis at his disposal to provide cover for Kyle Walker, allowing Cancelo to leave may be the best option for all parties in the summer, especially considering Man City could receive £61.5m if Bayern decide to make his stay permanent.

Milner may leave with possible Liverpool Jude Bellingham transfer

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool midfielder James Milner may leave this summer amid transfer interest in Jude Bellingham.

What’s the latest on Milner, Bellingham and Liverpool? The Reds have been said to be in the market for a new midfielder for some time now and the Borussia Dortmund star is understood to be one of the club’s biggest priorities this summer. However, manager Jurgen Klopp made it clear in January that the club don’t have the resources to just go out and sign expensive new players. With that in mind, it seems a few midfielders could be leaving Liverpool this summer to make way for Bellingham.Indeed, while talking on his YouTube channel, Romano noted that loanee Arthur Melo won’t be joining the club on a permanent basis, while Milner’s future is yet to be decided. He said (3:40): “Let’s see what happens with James Milner. This will be decided in the final months of the season.”But also Arthur Melo. Arthur will not stay at Liverpool next season. The idea is clear, he is expected to return to Juventus and then Juventus will discuss with other clubs to find a solution for Arthur.”But Liverpool will cut many players from that position because Jude Bellingham is the big target. Of course with Man City and Real Madrid also involved in the race.”What could Milner’s contract situation mean for Liverpool transfers?Milner has been a great servant for the Premier League club since arriving from Manchester City for free back in 2015. The Englishman has played over 300 games for the Reds, winning essentially every major trophy available. However, at 37 years of age now, it might be time for him to retire soon or at least bring his time with Liverpool to an end. With his contract set to expire this summer, this could be the right moment for the two to part ways.Saying all that, Milner has still played in 28 games across all competitions this season for Klopp (albeit mostly as a sub), so it’s not as if he’s an unused squad member,But with a fee in the region of £130m being quoted for Bellingham, Liverpool may have to cut costs in other areas to fund a move and so perhaps the club will decide against renewing the contract of their veteran midfielder this summer.

Arsenal vs Villa team news: Partey out

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey ‘won’t be involved’ in the Premier League game vs Aston Villa, according to journalist Chris Wheatley.

The Lowdown: Arteta’s update

The Ghanaian international sustained a muscular injury during training ahead of the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in midweek which saw him absent from the squad at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Mikel Arteta admitted that he would have to make a late call on the 29-year-old’s fitness for today’s trip to the Midlands, and it sounds like a decision has now been made.

The Latest: Partey ‘won’t be involved’

Taking to Twitter on Friday evening, Wheatley confirmed that Arsenal have decided not to risk Partey for the clash against Unai Emery’s side this afternoon. He wrote:

“Thomas Partey won’t be involved for Arsenal against Aston Villa tomorrow.

“Precautionary measure due to a muscular injury.”

The Verdict: Blow for Arteta

Partey has been a regular feature for Arsenal this season making 23 appearances across all competitions so it’ll be a blow for Arteta to be without his services for the second game running.

The Gunners star was averaging 2.3 tackles and 1.5 clearances per league game prior to his absence, earning him an impressive match rating of 7.25, highlighting the positive impact he has on the side (WhoScored).

Partey stands out as a crucial defensive player, having made more challenges per 90 than any Gunners star, whilst also ranking in their top five best-performers overall (WhoScored).

The Nike-sponsored player has also shown he can be a threat in the final third having netted two goals this term, so the boss will no doubt be hoping to have him back at his disposal as soon as possible.

Spurs could save millions with Udogie

Tottenham Hotspur had a relatively quiet January transfer window as their only signings were Arnaut Danjuma and Pedro Porro on loan from Villarreal and Sporting Lisbon respectively.

However, Football Insider have claimed that Spurs attempted to snap up young left-back Thierry Small from Premier League rivals Southampton on the final day of the window

The report claims that the north London club believe the youngster has the potential to make the breakthrough at first-team level in the top flight in the future, but pulled out of a deal after their offer fell short of the Saints’ asking price.

Fabio Paratici must now forget about a swoop for the 18-year-old, though, as Antonio Conte could save his compatriot millions by bringing Destiny Udogie back into the fold next season.

Speaking to Tottenham’s website, Paratici hailed the gem’s talent by saying: “He is a wing-back, he has a really, really, really good left foot, offensive phases are really good, he creates a lot of opportunities to score, make assists so he’s a complete player.”

The young left-back is currently out on loan after joining Spurs on a permanent deal last summer, and his form in 2022/23 so far suggests that he could be an excellent option for Conte next term.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed the dynamo as being “on fire” earlier this season, and the 20-year-old’s statistics in Serie A for Udinese back that up.

The Italian full-back has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.89 across 16 appearances and chipped in with two goals and two assists, whilst creating 1.4 chances per game for his team-mates, which would place him in the top five creators at Tottenham.

Along with his attacking contributions, Udogie has also made a whopping 3.8 tackles and interceptions per match – 1.2 more per outing than any Spurs full-back has managed in the Premier League this season.

This is not a flash in the pan for the youngster, either, as he scored five goals and set up four in 29 Serie A starts for Udinese last term. This shows that the gem has proven himself to be an attacking talent from a full-back position, suiting Conte’s wing-back system.

He still has the next four months or so to continue playing in Italy, but his current statistics suggest that Conte should be looking forward to welcoming him back to Spurs next season.

If the head coach can bring Udogie back to N17 and get him performing to those levels in the Premier League, then there would be no need for another young player in that position to come in, which would save Paratici from needing to spend millions on a new signing such as Small.

Leeds: Brereton Diaz set to join Villarreal

Leeds United have been dealt a transfer setback after learning that forward target Ben Brereton Diaz is closing in on a move to Villarreal, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Scouting mission

The Blackburn Rovers striker will be out of contract at Ewood Park at the end of the season, and over the past few months, this has alerted several potential suitors that a deal could be struck.

The Chile international has been the subject of strong interest from the Whites for some time, with Leeds chiefs having watched him in action on numerous occasions this term and reports confirming he’s a ‘long time target’.

Following a fresh update however, it sounds like he won’t be making his way to Elland Road.

The Latest: Brereton Diaz to Villarreal?

According to Football Insider, Brereton-Diaz is now in ‘advanced talks’ to join Villarreal in a ‘blow’ to both Leeds and West Ham, his other Premier League admirer.

The La Liga giants are ‘confident of finalising terms’ following a positive round of negotiations on Wednesday, despite Leeds and the Hammers ‘trailing’ the player.

The 23-year-old could sign a pre-contract agreement ahead of a free transfer in the summer, though a move this month has also been mentioned for a fee in the region of £8m.

The Verdict: Setback for Marsch?

Brereton Diaz has been hailed as a ‘phenomenal’ player by R.D football scout so it’s a definite setback for Jesse Marsch to learn that he looks likely to miss out on securing one of his long-term transfer targets.

The Stoke On Trent-born talent has already posted 13 goal contributions in 26 Championship appearances this term, averaging 2.7 shots per 90 minutes (WhoScored).

The Rovers talisman would have been the ideal attacking reinforcement to come in and try to steer the Whites to safety, but they will have to hope that new arrival Georginio Rutter is able to have the same desired effect.

Sunderland in talks to sign Isaac Lihadji

An update has emerged on Sunderland and their attempts to add a winger to their squad during the January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

French outlet Le Petit Lillois has reported that the Black Cats are in talks to sign Lille forward Isaac Lihadji in the final week and a half of the month.

They Tweeted: “As announced by@Treize013and which we can confirm, Isaac Lihadji is in very advanced contact with Sunderland AFC (D2). The player even visited the facilities of the English club. The Hamburg club (D2) also approached the player, to no avail.”

The attacker is expected to secure a permanent transfer to the Stadium of Light if all goes to plan but it remains to be seen whether he will be a signing for the first team immediately or for the future.

Imagine him & Edouard Michut

Sunderland dipped into the French market last summer to sign Edouard Michut from Paris Saint-Germain and could now find an exciting partner for him in attack by landing Lihadji.

The current Black Cats midfielder has only started twice in the Championship this season but is a long-term asset for the club, at the age of 19, and showed promise in Ligue 1 last season by assisting one goal in five appearances for PSG.

Lihadji, meanwhile, racked up 13 appearances, starting twice, in Ligue 1 for Lille last season and chipped in with an eye-catching one goal and three assists – creating 13 chances in total – despite his limited involvement.

French reporter @treize013 spoke to the Roker Report to provide insight on the winger and said:

“He is fast and explosive. He enjoys taking defenders on in 1v1 situations. He is very comfortable at dribbling, and has good ball control. He also has a good quality through the centre. His strengths are speed, and decision-making with good technical quality.

“He can ignite the stadium, and can also become one of the darlings of Sunderland supporters if things go well.”

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig also once described the attacker as being “explosive” and this indicates, along with the creativity that he displayed in the French top-flight last term, that the gem could be an exciting player for the fans to watch.

The 20-year-old is a promising young talent, who has already shown flashes of his quality in a major European league, and could be the future of Sunderland’s attack alongside his fellow countryman Michut, 19.

Just imagine the pair developing alongside each other and eventually making themselves mainstays in the Black Cats team in the Championship, or even in the Premier League, for years to come…
