Usman Khawaja condemns 'disrespectful' behaviour from MCC members

MCC has issued an unreserved apology to Australia after some of their players were abused when walking through the Long Room on day five of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, following the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow, with Usman Khawaja describing what was said as “pretty disrespectful”.Khawaja and David Warner were shown on TV footage getting into a heated exchange with MCC members as the Australians went to their dressing room at lunch, with the stewards having to intervene. MCC said on Sunday evening that three members had been suspended pending investigation.”MCC can confirm it has suspended three Members identified from earlier today,” a spokesperson said. “They will not be permitted back to Lord’s whilst the investigation takes place and were informed of this by MCC Chief Executive, Guy Lavender, this evening.”We maintain that the behaviour of a small number of Members was completely unacceptable and whilst there was no suggestion by Pat Cummins in the post-match press conference that there was any physical altercation, it remains wholly unacceptable to behave in such a way, which goes against the values of the Club. MCC condemns the behaviour witnessed and once again we re-iterate our apology to Cricket Australia.Speaking afterwards to Channel Nine, Khawaja said that it was “really disappointing” and that he “wasn’t just going to stand by and cop” abuse. “It was really disappointing,” he said. “Lord’s is one of my favourite places to come. There’s always respect shown at Lord’s, particularly in the Members Pavilion in the Long Room, but there wasn’t today. It was very disappointing.Related

“If anyone asked me where the best place is to play I always say Lord’s,” Khawaja added. “The crowd is great, particularly the members are great, and some of the stuff that was coming out of the members’ mouths is really disappointing and I wasn’t just going stand by and cop it. So I just talked to a few of them.”A few of them were throwing out some pretty big allegations and I just called them up on it and they kept going, and I was like, well, this is your membership here. So I’m just pointing them out. But it’s pretty disrespectful, to be honest. I just expect a lot better from the members.”Tempers flared at Lord’s after Bairstow was given out when Alex Carey threw down the stumps with the batter having left his crease for the end of the over – but without the ball having been called dead. Loud booing was heard around the ground, and continued for the rest of the game, though Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, said afterwards that the dismissal was within the laws and “totally fair play”.”MCC came and apologised for the behaviour of some of the members,” Cummins added in his post-match press conference. “I think some of them might lose their memberships over the way they behaved. Other than that one time, they were fantastic all week. I think they were just quite aggressive and abusive towards some of our players, which I know the MCC weren’t too happy with.”Tempers ran high at Lord’s as Australia went 2-0 up in the series•Getty Images

Asked about the Bairstow dismissal, Khawaja said: “It’s is what it is. We copped the same thing at Edgbaston. Obviously, it’s a little different here. It’s disappointing, to say the least. You know, we always try to play the cricket, in our best spirits, and we’ve said since Patty has taken over, since Andrew McDonald has taken over, winning is as important as how we win.”The decision again was in the umpire’s hands. If the umpire deemed it a dead ball today, it was a dead ball. Just like yesterday’s catch [by Mitchell Starc, which was ruled not out]. We don’t fully agree with it, but you have to accept the umpire’s decision.”That’s why the umpires are there. So I mean, there’s always grey areas in cricket. And the way it played out I guess in some respects, is kind of disappointing. I love Stuey [Stuart] Broad. I think he’s one of my favourite cricketers. The way he plays, the way he’s always got a smile on his face and he was pretty riled up out there, which you don’t want to see. But yeah, it is what it is.”Both Cricket Australia and MCC released statements in response to events in the Long Room. A Cricket Australia spokesperson said: “Australian management has requested the Marylebone Cricket Club [MCC] investigate several incidents involving spectators in the members area during lunch on day five of the Lord’s Test.”It is alleged players and staff from the Australian team were verbally abused, with some being physically contacted, as they made their way to lunch through the members area.” Cummins clarified in his press conference that he was not aware of any physical altercations.MCC’s initial statement said: “The Long Room is unique in world cricket and the great privilege of players passing through the pavilion is very special. After this morning’s play, emotions were running high, and words were unfortunately exchanged with some of the Australian team, by a small number of members.”We have unreservedly apologised to the Australian team and will deal with any member who has not maintained the standard we expect through our disciplinary processes. It was not necessary to eject anyone from the ground and I am pleased to say that there was no repeat of this as the players resumed the field for this afternoon’s session.”

£38m price cut: Man Utd given big opportunity to sign "world-class" striker

Manchester United have been given a big opportunity to sign a “world-class” striker, as his price tag is set to drop by around £38m in the summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd in need of a striker

It would be fair to say very few players have impressed in a Man United shirt this season, considering Ruben Amorim’s side have picked up just 30 points in 26 Premier League games, and their strikers are no exception, having consistently struggled to find the back of the net.

Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have scored a combined five goals in the Premier League this term, with neither striker netting in 2025, so it is clear that Amorim will need to upgrade his forward line when summer comes around.

Several top strikers have been linked with moves to Old Trafford, and there is a belief United could trigger Matheus Cunha’s £62.5m release clause if Alejandro Garnacho leaves, following interest from Napoli and Chelsea in January.

Man Utd "hopeful" about signing "astonishing" £50m forward; talks advancing

The Red Devils are now negotiating a summer move for an exciting young forward.

ByDominic Lund Feb 25, 2025

Now, Romano has dropped an update on the Red Devils’ pursuit of Victor Osimhen, with the transfer expert revealing United will have a big opportunity to sign the forward for a cut-price fee this summer.

Osimhen has a €120m (£100m) release clause in his current contract, but if Napoli are unable to get him off the books before the end of June, it will fall to €75m – €80m (£62m – £66m), meaning a £38m price drop could be on the cards.

Romano states that nothing is concrete or advanced between United and the Nigerian, contrary to some reports from elsewhere, as he is focussed on winning the league with Galatasaray, but meetings to discuss his future are set to continue in April or May.

Osimhen's insane goal record

It is clear to see why a number of top clubs are interested in the 26-year-old, given his exceptional goal record across spells with Charleroi, Lille, Napoli and Galatasaray.

The Nigeria international has hit the ground running since moving to Turkey, with his side in a strong position to win the league title, and he has been lauded as “world-class” by football writer Matt Barlow, while also receiving praise from analyst Statman Dave.

United can’t afford to pass up the opportunity to sign Osimhen for a reduced fee, given their struggles in front of goal this season, so they should go all out to sign the prolific striker this summer, should he still remain keen on the move.

Man Utd plotting swoop for "complete" player who has £55m release clause

Manchester United are plotting a move to sign a “complete” player who has a £55 million release clause in the summer, according to a recent report.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils still have lots to play for in the FA Cup and Europa League, but given how the Premier League season has gone, Ruben Amorim will be keen to get this campaign finished, so the club can then turn their focus to the summer and make the changes he thinks are required.

Amorim could now sell "superb" Man Utd player to fund move for £46m star

The United boss may have to raise some cash if he is going to sign the players he wants this summer.

ByDominic Lund Feb 13, 2025

It’s been reported this week that Amorim is keen for Man United to sign both Viktor Gyokeres and Geovany Quenda from Sporting. The duo are players Amorim knows very well and are seen as two who can instantly fit into the Portuguese’s system at Old Trafford. It is believed the opportunity to be a part of their former manager’s project could help lure the duo to Old Trafford.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokeres

As well as looking at the pair from Sporting, it’s been reported from Spain that Amorim is looking to sign Joao Cancelo from Al-Hilal, which would be a controversial signing, as he played for neighbours Manchester City.

The Portuguese is seen as the ideal player to strengthen United’s options at right-back, but he is under contract in Saudi until 2027, meaning Al-Hilal are in a strong negotiation position.

Man Utd plotting transfer swoop for Dean Huijsen

The potential arrivals do not stop there, as according to The Sun, Manchester United are interested in signing Dean Huijsen from AFC Bournemouth in the summer.

Bournemouth's DeanHuijsencelebrates after the match

The 19-year-old joined the Cherries in the summer transfer window from Juventus and has impressed enormously since, putting him on United’s radar. The report states that his performances have caught the attention of Amorim, who is starting to put his summer transfer plans into place. However, they are not alone in their pursuit, as Real Madrid are also interested in signing the centre-back as well as teams from Germany.

Huijsen, who has been described as a “complete package” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, is under contract with Bournemouth until 2030, but it is being reported that he has a £55 million release clause that comes into effect in July. The Spain under-21 international has started the last 11 Premier League games, during which he scored against the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

Signing a centre-back in the summer may have just become even more of a priority for United given the injury to Lisandro Martínez. The Argentine is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury, and with Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans coming to the end of their contracts, a new centre-back may be needed to provide cover and competition for Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire.

Huijsen fits into what United are looking for, a young player who has lots of time to develop into an even better one and the added bonus that he has already played in England and the Premier League.

Ireland to tour Zimbabwe for T20Is and ODIs in January 2023

The ODI series will not be part of the World Cup Super League

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Dec-2022The Ireland men’s team is set to tour Zimbabwe for three T20Is and three ODIs in January. All six matches will be played at the Harare Sports Club. The tour will start with the T20Is on January 12, 14 and 15, followed by the ODIs on January 18, 20 and 23.The ODI series will not be part of the World Cup Super League. For both teams, the series will be the first international action since the T20 World Cup, and provide valuable game time leading into the ODI World Cup Qualifier, which is scheduled to take place in Zimbabwe in June-July 2023. As things stand, Zimbabwe are out of the running to qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup, which is scheduled for October-November in India, while Ireland are in a four-way tussle to secure the eighth and final automatic-qualification slot.Ireland are currently in 10th place on the 13-team league table, with one series remaining, at home against Bangladesh in the summer of 2023. They will need to win all three matches in that series to have a chance of finishing in eighth place, while also hoping that Sri Lanka and South Africa don’t win all their respective remaining games.Zimbabwe, meanwhile, are in 12th place. Their last Super League series is at home against 13th-placed Netherlands in March 2023.

Their own Watkins: Spurs make contact for one of "the best CFs in the PL"

The transfer window slams shut in less than a week, and as things stand, Tottenham Hotspur have not done enough business.

The only player Ange Postecoglou’s side have signed so far is Czech shot-stopper Antonín Kinský, who completed his £12.5m move from Slavia Prague all the way back on January 5th.

What makes this situation worse is that it looks like fierce rivals Arsenal are now looking to do some business of their own, as it was revealed on Wednesday night that they had seen an audacious £60m bid for Aston Villa and England star Ollie Watkins rejected.

However, there might still be cause for optimism on the white side of North London, as recent reports have now linked Spurs with another brilliant Premier League striker who has won comparisons to the Villa ace.

Tottenham target Premier League striker

According to a recent report from Foot Mercato, Tottenham are incredibly interested in Brentford star Yoane Wissa.

Transfer Focus

In fact, the report goes one step further, revealing that the Lilywhites have now initiated contact with the West Londoners and the player himself over the potential transfer.

A price is not mentioned in the story, but as reports from earlier this month claimed that Nottingham Forest had a £20m offer rejected for the Frenchman, we can only assume the Bees are holding out for something in excess of that.

It could be a complicated and somewhat costly transfer to get over the line for Spurs, but given Wissa’s ability and form, it’s one worth fighting for, especially as he’s been compared to the sublime Watkins.

How Wissa compares to Watkins and why Spurs should sign him

So, before we look at some of the other reasons Spurs should sign Wissa this month, let’s examine this comparison to Watkins and where it comess from.

Well, in this instance, it has stemmed from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in the Premier League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the Englishman is the fourth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Cameroonian superstar.

The best way to see how this conclusion has been reached is by looking at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, actual and expected non-penalty goals plus assists, progressive carries, shots on target, goal and shot-creating actions, tackles won, successful take-ons and more, all per 90.

On top of sharing quite a significant number of statistical similarities with the Villa ace, the former FC Lorient star also shares his positional versatility, having made 106 appearances at left-wing and 23 on the opposite flank across his career to date.

However, while an undeniable positive, the fact he is so similar to the Arsenal target is not the sole reason why Levy and Co should splash the cash on bringing him to N17 this month.

Another, arguably far more significant reason why the club should sign the Bees ace is his impressive output for a team outside the traditional ‘big six’.

For example, in 36 appearances for the West Londoners last season, totalling 2626 minutes, the underrated forward, whom Sky Sports News editor Lyall Thomas dubbed one of “the best strikers in the Premier League,” scored 12 goals and provided three assists, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every 2.4 games, or every 175.06 minutes.

This year, he looks set to do even better and has already amassed a haul of 12 goals and two assists in 24 appearances, totalling just 1729 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.71 games, or every 123.5 minutes.

Ultimately, Spurs need attacking reinforcements this month, and while he might not be the biggest name around, Wissa has more than proven his ability as a top-class Premier League goalscorer.

Therefore, Levy and Co must do what they can to bring him to N17, as he could well be their answer to Watkins should those in red get their man.

The hottest property in Scotland: Celtic could sign their next Christie

Celtic’s excellent season continues. On Saturday evening, the Hoops battled through to the Scottish Cup fifth round, overcoming Kilmarnock 2-1 at Parkhead, with Callum McGregor’s long-range strike breaking the deadlock, before Daizen Maeda stroked home the winner for the Parkhead side later on.

Meantime, Brendan Rodgers’ side are 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership, have already hoisted aloft the League Cup and are on course to reach the Champions League knockout stages, ahead of Wednesday’s crucial clash with the competition’s bottom side BSC Young Boys in Glasgow. What could go wrong?

Meantime, off the park, the Hoops are yet to make a January signing, but are chasing the hottest prospect in Scottish football right now.

Celtic could sign teenaged Premiership star

As reported by Steve Scott of Sky Sports, Motherwell have rejected a £2.5m bid from Serie A outfit Udinese for star midfielder Lennon Miller.

Back in November, John McGarry of the Daily Mail claimed that Celtic, as well as Rangers, are interested in Miller, a player he described as the “hottest property in Scottish football”, with Dominic McColgan adding that Motherwell are steadfast in their belief that their star man is worth £4m.

After joining Motherwell as an eight-year-old, Miller made his debut against Inverness Caley Thistle in August 2022, coming less than a week after his 16th birthday, making a total of 63 appearances for the Steelmen to date, scoring five goals and providing nine assists.

Back in November, with neither Paul McGinn nor Stephen O’Donnell available, he became the youngest captain in the Well’s 138-year history, leading the team out at Hampden no less for a League Cup semi-final against Rangers.

His father Lee is a well-known figure within Scottish football, having played for Falkirk, Hearts, Dundee United, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and others, winning three international caps, a tally the as-yet uncapped Lennon will surely surpass soon.

What Lennon Miller would bring to Celtic

As an 18-year-old scorer of two goals and supplier of six assists in just 19 SPFL games this term, the teenager would bring quality in abundance, notably in forward areas.

Such eye-catching form has led journalist Kenny Millar to describe the midfield maestro as “brilliant”, while former Birmingham, Everton and Motherwell midfielder James McFadden said on Sky Sports that he has “no doubt he’ll make the club a lot of money eventually”.

So, could Celtic be the club who pay big cash to secure his services?

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Indeed, should this move go through, it would not be the first time Celtic have snapped up the most highly-rated young Scottish talent, and it certainly won’t be the last.

As noted in the table, Celtic paid £3.25m for David Turnbull’s services five seasons ago, a club-record sale for Motherwell, who are seeking an even higher fee to sell Miller.

Despite the obvious club comparison to Turnbull, Miller is more stylistically similar to Ryan Christie, given that both are goal-scoring midfielders who are capable of arriving late into the box and scoring goals, while the pair also have a long-range strike on them.

Christie won nine major trophies during his time in Glasgow, scoring 42 goals and accumulating 44 assists in 151 appearances before being sold to Bournemouth in 2021.

Miller is even more highly-rated than Christie ever was at Caley Thistle, and could take his game to the next level, should he choose to join the Premiership champions.
