Mumbai beset with problems; squad depth gives Super Giants most solutions

Big picture

Miracles do happen in sport. In cricket too. Pakistan took home the 1992 World Cup after only one win in their first five matches, and closer home, Kolkata Knight Riders won nine games in a row on their way to a second IPL title in 2014.Why talk about that now? Well, Mumbai Indians must win eight of their remaining nine league matches to have a fair chance of making the playoffs, after losing five in a row to begin with. One of Mumbai’s problems is that their senior core of Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard and Jasprit Bumrah have not contributed a lot. But count the positives, and you will note Bumrah’s yorker-laden spell against Punjab Kings, which could be a sign of things to come, Suryakumar Yadav has continued to deliver runs, and youngsters Tilak Varma and Dewald Brevis have shone on the big stage.

Live in the USA

Watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

Mumbai have begun their race against time already, but must start running faster, and fast.On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants have such luxury in their ranks that they could afford to not bowl any of Krunal Pandya, Marcus Stoinis and Deepak Hooda against Rajasthan Royals. Such is the richness of their batting order that they could send Stoinis in at No. 8, allowing themselves to have two left-handers at the crease against spin, while keeping their batting order flexible in strategic battle against Royals. It didn’t work out on that occasion, but three wins in five games isn’t too shabby. In a reality that may pinch their opponents, it is Mumbai’s ex-enforcer Quinton de Kock who has been leading the way for Super Giants with the bat, especially in quick knocks of 61 and 80 set the tone for his side’s successful run chases against Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. There have been many other significant contributions. With the bat from Hooda, KL Rahul and the impressive Ayush Badoni, and with the ball from Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, K Gowtham and Pandya. They would back themselves to put the narrow loss against Royals behind quickly.

In the news

This tournament has been a lot about the new and young faces, three of whom feature in this contest: Badoni, Tilak and Brevis. Who knows if one of them will spur their team on to a win – Mumbai, especially, would hope that happens.5:05

Should Stoinis have come in earlier against Rajasthan Royals?

Likely XIs

Super Giants are unlikely to tweak with their side despite coming off a loss, since that XI provides batting depth as well as multiple allrounders. But Stoinis’ batting position could be rejigged.Lucknow Super Giants: 1 KL Rahul (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Marcus Stoinis, 4 Deepak Hooda, 5 Ayush Badoni, 6 Jason Holder, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 K Gowtham, 9 Dushmantha Chameera, 10 Avesh Khan, 11 Ravi BishnoiShould Mumbai bring Tim David back? Should they give Fabian Allen a chance? Should they stick with Basil Thampi and M Ashwin? Something. Anything.Mumbai Indians: 1 Ishan Kishan (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Dewald Brevis, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Tymal Mills/Tim David, 8 Jaydev Unadkat, 9 Mayank Markande/M Ashwin, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Basil Thampi/Fabian Allen

Strategy punt

  • Bishnoi has been Super Giants’ trump card this season, bowling quicker and with more googlies than legspin. Across all T20s, the highest strike rate that any of Rohit, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar and Pollard have against him is Kishan’s 118. Bishnoi has also dismissed Rohit and Kishan once each, and Suryakumar twice, with the in-form batter striking at just 89 against the legspinner. And although Bishnoi is yet to get Pollard, the explosive batter goes even quieter against him with a strike rate of 79. Thus, with Rohit, Kishan and Suryakumar forming Mumbai’s top three, Super Giants can employ Bishnoi in the powerplay, aside from using him against Pollard at the death.
  • None of Thampi, Ashwin and Jaydev Unadkat has ever dismissed de Kock in a T20. Moreover, his strike rate against them reads 173, 153 and 145, respectively. Bumrah, too, has never got the Super Giants opener, although he has bowled only six deliveries to him, being Mumbai team-mates for the longest time. And against Pollard, de Kock has fallen only once while going at a strike rate of 122. With that record and with his recent form, de Kock might just end all hopes of Mumbai’s revival if he gets going in the powerplay.

Stats that matter

  • Since 2018, Rahul has the most runs in the IPL – 2680 at an average of 53.6.
  • Just like this year, Mumbai had also lost five matches to start the 2014 IPL. But they won seven out of the next nine and made the playoffs, where they lost the Eliminator to Super Kings. However, IPL was an eight-team tournament at the time.
  • Dushmantha Chameera has dismissed Rohit six times in T20Is, the most times the India and Mumbai captain has fallen to an individual.
  • The No. 3 position hasn’t yielded Super Giants the results yet. In five innings this season, that spot has given them only 21 runs at a strike rate of 62, both by far the lowest among all sides.

Mohammad Haris, Asif Afridi in Pakistan white-ball squads for Australia series

Pakistan have called up uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris and allrounder Asif Afridi to their white-ball squads for the upcoming home series against Australia. The selectors have largely retained the squad that faced West Indies at home last December. Fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain, whose bowling action was recently found to be illegal, makes way for Hasan Ali, who has played just one white-ball international for Pakistan since he went for 0 for 44 in his four overs during the T20 World Cup semi-final against Australia last year in Dubai.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Haris, 20, was among the breakout stars of PSL 2022, hitting 166 runs in five innings at an average of 33.20 and strike rate of nearly 187 for Peshawar Zalmi. Haris’ strike rate was the highest by any top-order batter in PSL 2022. He had made an immediate impact on PSL debut, slamming a match-winning 49 off 27 balls, against Karachi Kings.Haris also displayed strong form in the 50-over Pakistan Cup last year, scoring 289 runs in eight innings at an average of 41.28 and strike rate of over 100, during Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s run to the title. This is Haris’ second call-up to the Pakistan squad after having made the cut for the New Zealand series, which was eventually postponed last year.Haris’ selection effectively shuts the door on Sarfaraz Ahmed who has been part of the larger squad over the past two years as a back-up for Mohammad Rizwan. Rohail Nazir was also on the selectors’ radar previously, but Haris has now got the nod.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Asif Afridi, too, has been rewarded for impressing in the PSL. The 35-year-old took eight wickets in five matches for Multan Sultans at an economy rate of 6.52. He has been picked as a cover for the first-choice Mohammad Nawaz who missed a part of the PSL with a foot injury. Nawaz had also missed the ongoing Benaud-Qadir Trophy and his participation in the following white-ball series is subject to clearing a fitness test.Related

  • Political situation could force PCB to shift white-ball series out of Rawalpindi

  • Breakout stars of PSL 2022: Zaman Khan, Mohammad Haris

The selectors have put faith in Haider Ali despite his poor returns in PSL 2022: 152 runs in nine innings at an average of 21.71 and strike rate of 116.03.Pakistan have named a 20-man squad for the ODI leg and a 17-man squad for the T20Is, with Abdullah Shafique, Saud Shakeel and Imam-ul-Haq being excluded for the shortest format. The white-ball players will assemble in Lahore on March 22 and will undergo a three-day in-room isolation before linking up with the squad. The tense political climate in Pakistan’s capital could cause the PCB to relocate the white-ball series against Australia out of Rawalpindi, with Lahore likely to be the new venue. With Prime Minister Imran Khan set to face a no-confidence vote, Rawalpindi and its twin city Islamabad are gearing up to become the focal point of political gatherings led by both the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the opposition-formed Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).As of now, Rawalpindi is scheduled to host three ODIs on March 29, March 31 and April 2, and a one-off T20I on April 5. The PCB has confirmed it is monitoring the situation and that it has “a contingency plan in place”, which will only be applied if advised by experts.

Clarke blitz, Maxwell all-round assault help Stars stay alive and eliminate Heat

Ben Duckett’s 51 was in vain at the MCG as Melbourne Stars continued to go from strength to strength

AAP16-Jan-2022Glenn Maxwell’s all-round genius and Joe Clarke’s outstanding strokemaking powered Melbourne Stars to a comprehensive eight-wicket BBL dismantling of the Brisbane Heat at the MCG.Keeping their finals hopes alive, the sixth-placed Stars blasted past the Heat’s modest 6 for 149 with 37 balls to spare on Sunday night. The win moved them to within two points of Adelaide Strikers (fourth) and Hobart Hurricanes (fifth).Clarke and Maxwell crunched 104 for the first wicket before Marcus Stoinis and Hilton Cartwright went on a power-hitting spree at the finish to consign the embattled Heat to their fourth successive defeat.Maxwell predominantly played second fiddle with the bat as Englishman Clarke dominated the powerplay and became the first player to notch five half-centuries this season. They succumbed in quick succession as the Stars took an early Power Surge in a bid to improve their net run rate but Stoinis and Cartwright kept the Stars’ foot on the Heat’s throat. The pair thumped five sixes between them from the combined 17 deliveries they faced.Earlier, Maxwell snared 2 for 19 from four overs before taking a candidate for catch of the summer. The Stars captain backpedalled from within the fielding circle, leapt high and snaffled Sam Heazlett’s attempted shovel of Nathan Coulter-Nile with a magnificent left-handed catch at full extension. After completing the catch, Maxwell put his hand over his mouth in disbelief.Maxwell introduced himself into the attack after Heat bossed the powerplay and struck immediate gold, when Chris Lynn, in his 100th match, tried to take him down but only succeeded in miscuing a high catch to Coulter-Nile.Ben Duckett was watchful early before teeing off during the power surge after Heat had stalled mid-innings. Duckett was bowled by legspinner Adam Zampa when he missed a reverse sweep as the Stars continued to go from strength to strength.

The England international playmaker became the most expensive player in the history of British football when moving to the Etihad Stadium for £100 million ($124m) in the summer of 2021. He has won Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles with City.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Grealish has, however, faced questions of his output throughout a trophy-laden spell in Manchester, with only two goals being registered this season. He stands accused of no longer drifting past players as he once did, with a starting berth proving difficult to nail down under Pep Guardiola.

  • WHAT STAN COLLYMORE SAID

Grealish is now 29 years of age and has seen a move elsewhere speculated on. Quizzed by GOAL on whether he could return to his roots in the West Midlands, ex-Villa striker Stan Collymore – speaking in association with – said: “No. I sincerely hope not. I think Jack’s output is nowhere near the required level.

“If you look at the two players that have been brought in, [Marco] Asensio and [Marcus] Rashford, they can play either side of Ollie Watkins. There is a question mark over both – can they do it, will they do it? They have got pedigree.

“Jack, really, going to Manchester City and being a part of the treble-winning team – even then he wasn’t the main man, that was Kevin De Bruyne. He was good but not great. Last season, a stat of scoring one goal in just over a year… I don’t think he goes past people any more. [Jeremy] Doku when he first came into the team did that, [Omar] Marmoush you imagine will do that.”

Collymore added on what the future could hold for Grealish: “Jack might end up going somewhere like Saudi because I’m struggling to see a top four, five or six team that would take him. The traditional top four or five, wages and fee would be a problem.

“If you are an aspiring club, Newcastle could go and buy anybody that’s young and hungry and fresh, likewise Villa. If you are one of the clubs like Bournemouth and Brighton, you probably couldn’t afford him. You could probably see him at a club like West Ham, bizarrely, because they have got the money and London as clout.

“I’m absolutely sure that Unai Emery won’t be going anywhere near Jack Grealish. Great emotional story, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Craig Williams savouring decision to return for Namibia

Cricketer by day, quality surveyor by night – Williams enjoying life after overturning 2018 retirement

Deivarayan Muthu30-Oct-2021Craig Williams bats in the top order for Namibia in the afternoon or evening. At night, the 37-year-old returns to his hotel room to write reports for insurance companies back home in Namibia. He wasn’t even supposed to be part of this Namibia team that is featuring in its first ever T20 World Cup. Williams had retired from the game in 2018 to shift his focus on his business and family, but head coach Pierre de Bryun valued his experience so much that he talked Williams out of retirement. Williams, ultimately, made a U-turn on his decision and is now relishing being part of Namibia’s incredible run in the UAE.Related

Albie Morkel: 'Cricket was a dying sport in Namibia, but people have started watching again'

“See, I retired for personal reasons. Basically, just business, work, family, kids and there was a lot more responsibility,” Wiliams recalled. “So, it was personal reasons to retire. I’ve said it in previous interviews that when you retire it’s like a dark place and you always have a feeling in your heart that there’s more to offer and when Pierre de Bryun became head coach, we had a meeting in January 2019 and he asked me: ‘Craig, is there a possibility of coming back, returning to assist a very young squad?’ So, I was more than happy to come back.”I just felt that there was more I could offer. At that stage, I wasn’t sure how much I could play. I really wanted to try and help the youngsters. But I obviously haven’t had injuries and my form has been okay, so it has allowed me to contribute on the field as well. So, reflecting… [it’s] probably the best decision I’ve ever made. It was a tough decision at the time; I had to leave my work, unfortunately the guys…there was no space to play cricket at that level and give that much commitment to cricket and work, so it was very difficult decision to come back. It wasn’t easy. But, in hindsight I’m really glad that myself and my family made that decision to commit again and play.”Williams was particularly thrilled at the global exposure that Namibia’s players have got at this World Cup. He cited the example of how allrounder David Wiese is now nurturing Namibia youngsters by sharing his experiences of featuring in various T20 tournaments around the world.”Playing a tournament like this, especially playing in the last 12…the exposure for our guys has been fantastic,” Williams said. “At the end of the day, we want to see our youngsters and our best players playing around the world because then they will bring that exposure and experience that they’ve gained back into our squad and teach our youngsters. So, for example, just having David Wiese – he’s played around the world. The amount of experience he’s brought back into our change room and the lessons that he’s teaching us about how to handle pressure and how to handle playing against the best – it has been fantastic.”So, we’re hoping that with the last few games some of our guys can show themselves in the world stage and hopefully pick up some deals around the world and then it will be fantastic if we can get the likes of Gerhard Erasmus and JJ and Ruben Trumpelmanns, Bernard Scholtzs – all these guys playing around the world. Still looking for the first Namibian to play in the IPL (laughs). So, hopefully after this tournament, we can get one of those deals on the table.”Afghanistan vs Nambia will make for a clash of contrasts, especially on the bowling front. Namibia have packed their attack with left-arm seam (because they don’t have as many right-armers ) while Afghanistan’s strength is right-arm spin. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman, in particular, have been lethal at different points during Afghanistan’s three matches in the Super 12s. Williams reckoned that Namibia’s familiarity with Afghanistan, however, would help his side in countering the opposition spinners.”Our conditions back home in Windhoek aren’t flat, quick wickets; they are quite low and slow,” Williams said. “So, we’ve done really well in the five series back home before coming to the World Cup against good spin attacks on low, slow wickets. So, we’ve put in really good preparation and we’ve put in extreme amount of analysis into the opposition and we’ve worked on individual game-plans for each batsman, so I think sitting where we are tonight, we’re in a very good place. Anything can happen in T20 cricket and we’ve played Afghanistan many, many times in the past. We know what they can do – so it’s just about on the day being able to handle the nerves and execute plans put in place.”So, in terms of playing spin, we’re extremely confident against spin. It’s just a matter of being able to execute your plan on that day against the best in the world because you know that’s who we are playing against.”Cricketer by day. Quality surveyor by night. Williams says that juggling between the two jobs can be challenging, but he’s prepared for greater responsibility as Namibia plan to go deep in the tournament.

Williamson grew up in London supporting Arsenal through her childhood before joining the Gunners' youth system in 2006. The Lionesses captain has stayed with the North London side growing into the player she is now. She keeps up her Gunner spirit still and even makes trips to the Emirates Stadium for the men's team's matches, where she talked to TNT Sports about the men's team and the famed North London derby.

Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of Arsenal's Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur, Williamson said: "Watching the North London Derby. I've got a split household Spurs and Arsenal. So it was quite feisty when I was younger but I just remember coming with my grandma, my mum to the Emirates every chance and obviously this fixture was one that we'd always want."

When asked how optimistic she is for the rest of the season: "You know what's happened here over the last couple of years? The whole club? It's been great. It's been great to be a part of as a player and a member of staff but also as a fan as well. And I think that this year it's not been the easiest but I hope there is silverware for Arsenal. I think we need that."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

When asked if the men's team's lack of form affected her and the women's team. She answered: "Yeah, I mean it doesn't affect us on the pitch. We got our own job to do. But I think as an Arsenal fan and a lot of the girls and you know what it's like, you play for a club and you adopt the role of a fan anyway.

"So I think that everybody's, everybody wants it to turn around and a lot of the girls are here tonight to support the boys as well. So yeah, as a whole club we want to turn it around. Yeah."

The 23-year-old striker has endured a challenging spell since his £36 million ($42m) summer transfer from Bologna, managing just four goals in 27 appearances for the Red Devils. His struggles to adapt have been compounded by his inability to secure a consistent spot in Ruben Amorim’s lineup.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to a return to Serie A, where Zirkzee thrived with Bologna last season under coach Thiago Motta, appears to be on the horizon. Juventus are reportedly eager to reunite the striker with his former mentor, who helped him flourish during his breakout campaign in Italy. The ongoing injury struggles of Juventus striker Arek Milik have left Dusan Vlahovic carrying the load in attack. Zirkzee’s arrival would provide much-needed depth and a player tailored to Motta’s tactical style. Juventus’ sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has reportedly been in discussions with Zirkzee’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, who facilitated Douglas Luiz’s transfer to Juventus earlier this year. While a basic agreement between Zirkzee’s representatives and Juventus appears to be in place, a deal has not yet been finalised.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

After his most recent substitution which saw the Dutchman leave the pitch in tears, Zirkzee is said to be eager to leave Old Trafford just a few months after his arrival. However, the decision may ultimately rest with new United boss Amorim, who has already excluded Marcus Rashford from his squad in recent weeks, and Zirkzee’s first-half withdrawal against Newcastle only added to the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.

    WHAT NEXT?

Financial constraints have left United with limited room for manoeuvring, making player sales essential for securing the funds needed to pursue reinforcements. Zirkzee’s potential departure could help ease those pressures, but the club faces a balancing act in finding a suitor willing to meet their demands. Juventus’ hesitance to commit to a permanent transfer leaves the situation in limbo, with the Bianconeri instead pushing for a January loan until the end of the season.

Cole Palmer ‘can’t stop players copying his celebration’ as Chelsea star tries to trademark iconic shivering move

Chelsea star Cole Palmer is trying to trademark his iconic celebration – but he might not be able to stop other players copying it.

Palmer trying to trademark iconic celebrationMight not be able to stop others from mimicking himChelsea take on Everton on SundayFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The England international might not be able to stop other players from copying the celebration on a football pitch, but he can protect it from being used in the commercial sphere outside of the ground through his attempts to trademark the shivering move.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Palmer performed the celebration for the first time in December 2023 in Chelsea's 3-2 win at Luton Town in the Premier League. He reportedly got the idea from former Manchester City academy team-mate Morgan Rogers, who performed it after scoring for Middlesbrough. Indeed, Rogers performed the celebration after scoring for Aston Villa in their 2-1 win against Manchester City on Saturday.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Speaking on talkSPORT, intellectual property, data and contract lawyer Ben Milloy said: "We're probably used to sports stars protecting their names and their logos and that kind of thing. But it is possible to protect what's called a non-traditional trademark. And that's what Cole Palmer has done. He's sought to protect a gesture or a technical emotion mark.

"But instead of filing a name or a logo, he's uploaded a short video of him performing the shiver celebration. And he has sought to protect it for a range of goods and services. And they are the typical merchandise that you'd expect. But as you say, it is quite wide-ranging. You've actually got baking powder in there as one of them. And underwater vehicles. So it's an indication of what Cole Palmer might have in store."

He added: "I mean, I don't really see it as a complication. I had to think about this. I suppose it's possible because we're just talking about intellectual property rights and there are various intellectual property rights and they all have quite a sort of confined scope.

"So I suppose it's possible for Morgan Rogers to say that he has some kind of copyright. If he treats his goal celebration as a form of performance art as a sort of dramatic work then it may qualify for copyright protection. And that might give him some theoretical claim. But it seems there would be lots and lots of hurdles and it seems basically it would not be successful."

DID YOU KNOW?

When asked if Palmer can stop other players from mimicking the celebration on the pitch, Milloy added: "What we're focused on really is Cole Palmer being able to stop people from using it off the football pitch in the commercial sphere, as it were.

"So he wouldn't be able to stop another player on the football pitch from mimicking the celebration or paying homage to it, whatever because that's not in the commercial sphere. So trademarks are designed to protect their kind of outside interests, their merchandising, their licensing deals and that kind of thing."
