Tottenham In Talks To Land £26m Maddison Partner

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be closing in on a potential replacement for in-demand striker, Harry Kane, amid reports that negotiations have been held regarding a move for Porto talisman, Mehdi Taremi.

What's the latest on Taremi to Tottenham?

According to Portuguese newspaper, Record, the 31-year-old is potentially set to play his 'last game' for the Primeira Liga side against rivals Benfica in the super cup later this week, with the north Londoners continuing their contact with the Iranian international.

Amid those talks, the piece suggests that an agreement has not yet been reached between the two clubs as the Lilywhites have yet to meet Porto's €30m (£26m) asking price, having thus far promised to cough up in the region of €24m (£21m).

This follows a report from transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio who revealed last week that Spurs are interested in signing the former Rio Ave man, with the experienced marksman seemingly up for grabs with just a year left to run on his current deal.

How good is Mehdi Taremi?

Not that Ange Postecoglou would have needed reminding of the importance of Kane to his side, although the free-scoring Englishman further rubberstamped his quality with a clinical display in the recent pre-season friendly clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, having hit four goals against the Ukranian outfit.

With the club's record scorer potentially on his way to Bayern Munich, those at N17 will have to seek out a suitable replacement who can be the new attacking figurehead moving forward, with Taremi perhaps an ideal fit due to his stellar record in Portugal in recent seasons.

The 6 foot 1 menace notably scored 31 goals and chipped in with 14 assists in 51 games in all competitions last term – totalling more goal involvements than any Tottenham player achieved – while having also netted 26 times and registered 17 assists the year prior.

James Maddison

While replicating such form in the Premier League will pose a different challenge, the 66-cap sensation could find that task far easier due to the presence of recent summer signing, James Maddison, with the ex-Leicester City magician likely to help Taremi prove rather unplayable in the final third.

As Maddison proved against Shakhtar – after providing an assist for Kane's second goal with a stunning, whipped cross – he can be a real creative weapon for Postecoglou's side next season, with 90min's Sean Walsh writing that the 26-year-old 'loves to get on the ball and play it forward'.

That quality was also evident last season as the Coventry-born maestro finished tenth in the division with regard to chances created, while also ranking in the top 15% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for progressive passes as a marker of that forward-thinking approach.

Having also created 12 'big chances' and averaged 2.3 key passes per game in 2022/23, Maddison has proven that he can provide the goods on a plate for those ahead of him in the forward line, thus ensuring that Taremi could flourish amid that constant, elite service.

With the Porto goal machine a true poacher by trade – as he ranks in the top 3% among his European peers for touches in the attacking penalty area – he could allow Maddison the space and freedom to operate in an advanced midfield role behind him.

As such, the signing of Taremi – who was branded "ridiculous" by pundit Rio Ferdinand for his overhead kick against Chelsea in the Champions League a few years ago – could prove to be a particularly astute, albeit rather left-field Kane replacement for Postecoglou and co.

Liverpool Agree Personal Terms With £50m Midfielder

Liverpool have reportedly agreed on personal terms with Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

Are Liverpool signing Romeo Lavia?

The Reds and Jurgen Klopp have already splashed the cash on two new midfielders so far this summer, with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai arriving from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively. Mac Allister was the first through the door at an initial cost of £35m, whereas Szoboszlai was more expensive at £60m.

It doesn’t look as if the club plan on stopping there when it comes to midfield additions, though, especially as James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all departed on free transfers over the summer, whereas Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are poised to move to Saudi Arabia.

Lavia, who made the move to Southampton from Manchester City last summer, has emerged as a real target in recent weeks, however, they could be rivalled by Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri on Tuesday, the Reds have now agreed on personal terms with Lavia, who was actually getting “annoyed” with those at Anfield as he felt a potential deal was “dragging”.

“Liverpool FC finally starts the talks with Southampton for Romeo Lavia! Belgian midfielder’s side just agreed on personal terms. These days, Romeo Lavia was waiting for the green light of LFC Board and was a little annoyed that it was dragging… It moved now!

“First official bid to be send soon by the Reds. I understand Reds wants to start with an offer close to £35M… Wait & See.”

Since then, it has been reported that Liverpool have made an opening offer of £40m for the Belgian, however, the Saints have turned that down and are holding out for a fee closer to £50m, with the Reds expected to make an improved bid.

romeo-lavia-transfer-gossip-arsenal-southampton-edu-arteta-jurrien-timber

Who is Romeo Lavia?

Lavia, labelled as a "10/10 talent" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, is 19 years of age and is primarily a defensive midfielder who can also play slightly further forward in a central midfield role. His Transfermarkt valuation has rocketed from €2m to a career-high €32m over the past 12 months following an impressive first season on the south coast where he made 34 appearances in all competitions.

Journalist Jacob Tanswell certainly feels Lavia is worth a £50m fee after watching him during his first Premier League season, saying:

“Regarding Romeo Lavia. Watched every minute of him last season and heard a lot about him. If LFC really want him, they should absolutely pay the £50 million. He is that good. Saints can wait as he's one of the few – if not only – player who has retained their market PL value.”

As per FBref over the past 12 months, Lavia has ranked highly in the defensive side of the game and is in the top 4% of midfielders for blocks, top 9% for passes blocked.

He averages 7.58 ball recoveries per 90, with all three attributes named considerably higher than Fabinho. Therefore, you could argue that the Saints man could be a shrewd addition both in the short and long run in the No.6 role, but Liverpool may need to up their offer to Southampton despite personal terms already being agreed.

Rowe and Devine mow down Pakistan

Sophie Devine pummeled a record nine sixes during her 41-ball 93 as New Zealand knocked Pakistan out of contention for the semi-finals

New Zealand have thrived on a set template this World Cup: rout the opposition for a low score and mow down the target. That template fetched New Zealand their third win and took them a step closer to the semi-finals. The result also meant Pakistan were the first team to be dumped out of the tournament after five defeats in as many matches.Offspinner Leigh Kasperek and seamer Hannah Rowe, who was on the verge of a hat-trick at one point, claimed combined figures of 19-2-57-5 to bundle Pakistan out for 144 – their fourth successive sub-150 score in the World Cup. Sophie Devine then made a mockery of the target, narrowly missing out on the fastest century in Women’s ODIs during her 41-ball 93. She, however, did break the record for the most sixes in an innings – hitting nine, including eight in the arc between midwicket and long-on. New Zealand sealed victory with eight wickets and 210 balls to spare and sounded out a stern warning to the other sides.Only hours after South Africa’s Lizelle Lee had smote seven sixes in Leicester to equal the record, Devine rewrote it. The carnage began when Devine clubbed seamer Kainat Imtiaz for three successive boundaries in the fourth over, after previous match-winner Rachel Priest had been dismissed. Devine meted out the same treatment to Diana Baig as New Zealand spliced 43 runs off the target in five overs. Devine continued on her merry way, reaching fifty off 27 balls. A hundred seemed a possibility before she checked a slog-sweep and top-edged a return catch to left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu with New Zealand two away from the win.Amy Satterthwaite, who proved the ideal foil for the rampaging Devine, laid out the finishing touches with a slapped four. The mammoth win propelled New Zealand’s net-run rate from 1.520 to 2.301.Pakistan, though, had started positively with the openers Ayesha Zafar and Nahida Khan putting on 35 for the first wicket. They showed urgency and dispatched the bad balls before Kasperek broke through. She got one to drift away and had Zafar dragging a catch to mid-on. She did not turn the ball much, like Thursday, but kept drifting it sharply, making you wonder if batsmen would be better off treating her like a legspinner. In her next over, Kasperek bowled Marina Iqbal for a duck. The spotlight then turned to Rowe, who was making her World Cup bow. She looked anxious in her first over, erring in lines and lengths, but proved her worth in her second. She trapped Javeria Khan and Nain Abidi off successive deliveries that pitched on an in-between length and nipped back in. When 16-year-old Amelia Kerr bowled Nahida around her legs with a dipping legbreak, Pakistan were 56 for 5 in 16 overs.A full-blown collapse loomed, but Sana Mir, featuring in her 100th ODI, made a measured fifty to save Pakistan the blushes. She first added 28 with Iram Javed, the injured Bismah Maroof’s replacement, then 35 with wicketkeeper Sidra Nawaz.Mir had dug in before scoring her first boundary off her 32nd ball when she manufactured room and drilled seamer Lea Tahuhu past mid-off. She opened up further and brought up her third ODI fifty off 83 balls in the 42nd over. However, she departed in the next over when she flapped a pull back to Tahuhu, the bowler. Pakistan were eventually bowled out in 46.5 overs. The nightmare, though, wasn’t over for them. They woke up to Devine.

Man United Make Contact With £100m "Crown Jewel"

Manchester United have made contact with Brighton & Hove Albion over the potential signing of midfielder Moises Caicedo this summer.

What’s the latest on Moises Caicedo to Manchester United?

According to 90min, United have made contact with the south coast side regarding a move for their prized asset, with a potential move likely to cost £100m, although the report states this is an overall figure and not just a one-off upfront payment.

United could face stiff competition from Chelsea for his signature, with the Stamford Bridge outfit set to open talks to sign the 21-year-old according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils had a chance to sign the talented midfielder back in January 2021 for a fee of just £4m as per the report, and they will obviously be regretting that now.

Could Manchester United sign Moises Caicedo this summer?

A move to United rather than Chelsea surely has a lot more incentives for the Ecuadorian, especially with Erik ten Hag’s men playing in the Champions League, giving him a taste of Europe’s premier club competition for the first time.

A move for Mason Mount has finally been agreed and signing Caicedo would signal a major statement of intent that the club are heading in the right trajectory.

Not only has Caicedo made the second-most tackles out of any player in the Premier League with 100 last season, displaying a dogged nature which could benefit Ten Hag's midfield, but he also ranks seventh for passes, with 2,209 throughout the whole season and this ability to circulate the ball effectively is key to the Dutchman’s philosophy.

His passing ability is one of the finest on the continent, with the Brighton star ranking in the top 6% across Europe’s top five leagues for pass completion percentage per 90 (88.5%) while also ranking in the top 13% for both tackles per 90 (2.87) and interceptions per 90 (1.61) and this could improve should he jump ship to United.

Ten Hag won't only be getting a player who has clearly enjoyed success in the top flight already, but one that could still significantly improve over the coming years, which suggests a fee of £100m may turn into a fine investment.

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.

Lauded as a “crown jewel of a new generation” by historian Enrico Castro-Montes, the ceiling is limitless for the youngster, as he could become one of the finest Ecuadorian players of all time, and with experience at the World Cup already under his belt, the pressure of playing for United shouldn’t faze him.

He could be a dream signing for Ten Hag and everything must be done in order to fend off Chelsea and get a move sealed as swiftly as possible.

Fabrizio Romano Issues Big Zaha Update At Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace need the "best proposal in their history" to keep Wilfried Zaha at Selhurst Park next season, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Is Zaha leaving Palace?

As things stand, Zaha will be leaving Crystal Palace on June 30th following the expiration of his contract. The 30-year-old has amassed 458 appearances over several spells with the Eagles, but could be bringing his most recent stint with the club to an end.

The winger has attempted to leave Selhurst Park in the past, but has never managed to force a move away from the club, normally due to the large transfer fee that would have been required to prise him away from Palace.

While there is still a chance he opts to stay with Roy Hodgson's side, Fabrizio Romano believes that the Eagles would need to offer a colossal proposal to the former Manchester United man.

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano said: "I can guarantee Lazio had a meeting and a contact with people close to Wilfried Zaha. So, there is a conversation, but, first of all it is not a done deal, and second I posted it is a complicated deal for Lazio because of the salary."

The Italian continued: "Zaha has some possibility in Saudi [Arabia], but at the moment he is not that keen on that kind of move. Zaha has some possibility in Europe in terms of other clubs, especially in France. So, he wants to take his time."

"For sure, Crystal Palace need the best proposal in their history to the player because the contract proposal is really huge, is really important, and they still hope he will say 'Okay, I'm staying here'"

According to the Guardian, Zaha was already offered a £200,000-a-week deal to stay at Palace in April, which would make him "by far" the highest paid player in the club's history and would offer him a £70,000-a-week pay rise.

Given that Zaha is yet to accept that lucrative deal, it suggests maybe he feels his future lies away from Selhurst Park.

Who will sign Zaha?

As Romano states, Lazio are very interested in Zaha. Maurizio Sarri is seemingly keen to add him to an attack that already contains former Premier League wingers Pedro and Felipe Anderson, although the former runs out of contract this summer.

However, as Romano adds, Lazio will struggle to compete with the financial proposals of the other clubs vying for Zaha's signature, despite not even needing to cough up a transfer fee for the 30-cap Ivory Coast international.

Zaha has reportedly rejected a £30m-a-year deal to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in favour of staying in Europe, perhaps reassuringly showing that money is not the biggest influence in his decision-making process.

Paris Saint-Germain, who are not shy of splashing the cash themselves, are also keeping an eye on the Palace attacker, as well as fellow Ligue 1 side Marseille.

West Ham Set To Sell £30m Forward, He’s Agreed Terms

West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca has already accepted a proposal to return to Italy, just a year after his £30m move to London.

How many goals has Scamacca scored?

Scamacca was an incredibly exciting prospect before making his move to West Ham last year. The Italian striker scored 16 goals in Serie A last year for Sassuolo, earning himself an expensive move to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has struggled however since his move, failing to replicate his success with just three goals in 16 Premier League appearances last season. The forward performed to a higher level in West Ham's Conference League triumph, scoring three in seven.

Scamacca began life at the London Stadium in a promising way, scoring four in his first 13 games. This early season form prompted captain Declan Rice to laud the striker with praise.

“I can tell you now he’s going to be unbelievable,” Rice told talkSPORT. “He‘s going to be really, really special." West Ham's captain passionately exclaimed "he’s just on another level".

The Italian has made 11 national team appearances so far, with zero goals there to his name, showing the forward could struggle to perform under major pressure.

Due to his poor season, Scamacca now appears set on a return to Serie A, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness. The report adds that AS Roma are the club most interested in the forward, due to Tammy Abraham being injured for the foreseeable future.

Scamacca is also reportedly extremely keen on the move with it being stated that he ‘has already accepted the proposal to return’ to his home country.

It is believed the Hammers aren't interested in a loan move and would prefer a clean break, but if no sale transpires a loan could indeed happen. It is believed a positve season on-loan could benefit West Ham too.

Will West Ham replace Scamacca?

West Ham would likely need to replace Scamacca if they lose him. His departure would leave them short up front with just an ageing Michail Antonio and injury prone Danny Ings in the ranks.

According to The Daily Mail, West Ham have identified Coventry City's Viktor Gyokeres as their primary striking target.

The Swedish striker is valued at £25m, and it is thought there are at least four Premier League sides in the hunt. The 25-year-old scored 21 Championship goals last season while also contributing ten assists as he fired Coventry to the play-off final.

Gyokeres is an incredibly exciting talent and could be a huge upgrade for West Ham on the current options available to David Moyes.

Bangladesh defend a proud home record

Bangladesh are chasing their seventh successive bilateral series win at home, this time against England, with heavy security evident

The Preview Mohammad Isam06-Oct-2016Match factsFriday, October 7, Dhaka
Start time 1430 local (0830 GMT)
Big PictureThe three-match ODI series against England will be Bangladesh’s quest for a seventh successive bilateral series win at home where they have been unbeaten for two years. Their latest success came against Afghanistan at the start of this week, which was Bangladesh’s first ODI series of 2016.Bangladesh have lost only three matches out of 20 encounters at home since November 2014. Tamim Iqbal has been their highest scorer during this period while Mushfiqur Rahim and Soumya Sarkar aren’t too far behind. Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza have been Bangladesh’s best bowlers but they will be missing Mustafizur Rahman who is recovering from shoulder surgery.England have so far been as respectful as a visiting team should be against such opponents but it would be hard to ignore their sparkle since the 2015 World Cup. They have displayed this summer how different an ODI unit they have developed themselves into. They might lack Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales, but the likes of James Vince and Ben Duckett give hope that the back-up will come good. There is also a lot of faith placed on Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler, who now have senior roles in the side for at least these three matches.Moeen Ali can provide in-depth knowledge on Bangladeshi cricketers and conditions having played here in two domestic tournaments. His friendship with Tamim could also come in handy for Moeen’s bowling as well as for injecting some bonhomie between the two sides.Bangladesh and England have only played two ODIs, in the 2011 and 2015 World Cups, after their last ODI series in 2010, but this is the meeting of two teams on the rise over the last 18 months. Ben Duckett is England’s fourth choice as a wicketkeeper after captain Buttler, Bairstow and Billings. If he does play on Friday, he will become England’s second ODI debutant in 2016. West Ham eye "superb" £150k-p/w misfit

West Ham United are debating whether to make a move for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.

What’s the latest on Kalvin Phillips to West Ham United?

According to the Evening Standard, the Irons are “monitoring” the 27-year-old outcast, who is viewed as a possible replacement for Declan Rice, should he expectedly leave this summer.

This outlet has revealed that the Hammers are hoping to recoup around £100m for the club captain and that money could be immediately reinvested in Phillips.

David Moyes has reportedly outlined that he wishes to target players with 'proven Premier League experience' and this is an attribute that the £150k-per-week man possesses in abundance.

Would Kalvin Phillips be a good signing for West Ham United?

The Englishman’s £45m move to the Etihad Stadium has thus far unravelled into a disappointment.

In a campaign ravaged by injury and inconsistency, the 5 foot 10 anchorman has only racked up 290 minutes of Premier League football, with just four starts in all competitions.

Surprisingly, Phillips was still called up for the 2022 World Cup, but Pep Guardiola complained that he was “overweight” and that he “didn’t arrive in the condition to do training sessions and to play” when he returned.

Kalvin-Phillips-and-Pep-Guardiola

However, one troubled year doesn’t detract from the sublime form that he displayed during a phenomenal eight-year stint with Leeds United.

After gaining promotion in 2020, the regista was an indispensable component of a Marcelo Bielsa outfit that secured a wondrous ninth-place finish in its first season back in the top flight.

He was central to the defensive effort, as he ranked within the top 12% in Europe’s top five leagues within his positional peers for tackles, interceptions, blocks, and clearances per 90, according to FBref.

The Yorkshireman was also a key figure in England’s Euro 2020 campaign, as he appeared in every game as Gareth Southgate’s side heartbreakingly lost the final to Italy.

His string of impressive performances at the tournament led Barcelona legend Xavi to describe the 26-cap international as “superb” and he was named as England’s 2021 Player of the Year.

Phillips has been lauded as an “idol” by Bielsa and despite an anonymous season in the north-west, he still has plenty to offer any Premier League outfit.

The Leeds-born titan has developed a formidable reputation for his ball-carrying, athleticism, pinpoint passing and stamina, so he could that energetic injection that Moyes is craving.

He can emulate Rice’s role in the squad as a ball-winning, ball-spraying protector that acts as the link between the defence and the attack.

With the east Londoners potentially playing Europa League football next term and Phillips being seemingly unable to displace the impenetrable Rodri, this transfer makes complete sense for both parties.

Rice’s exit is a daunting prospect for everyone at West Ham, but the signing of a player who already has demonstrated his quality at the top level with 61 Premier League appearances to his name would be an excellent way to soften the blow.
